Slash Guides Lambert, Iraheta to Rock Glory on “American Idol”

How bone-shatteringly rock & roll was American Idol’s Rock Week episode last night? So rockin’ part of the chintzy Idol set collapsed — or maybe that was an act of God, who didn’t approve of Danny Gokey murdering a cat at the end of his cover of Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” “I can not believe I’m sitting 1st row at American Idol,” Twittered Slash as the show began (and we cannot believe you’re “following” Sara Bareilles and Diddy, Mr. Hudson!). But it was all, for better or for worse, true. Mentor Slash took the final four to the Roxy on the Sunset Strip to rehearse and everyone got their leather on, as Karen O would say, for six rock songs that were all released before 1979, because according to Idol, that’s when rock & roll ended. The night ended up hosting six performances — four individual tunes and two duets — that would fit nicely into Broadway’s Tony-nominated Rock of Ages musical, which stars onetime Idol hopeful Constantine Maroulis. Coincidence! Here’s how they all stacked up (and check out Matt Giraud, Anoop Desai and Lil Rounds’ Final Four assessments):

(Follow all the Idol action in photos, in American Idol 2009: Season Eight, From the Top Eight to the End of the Line.)

We called this one last week: Adam Lambert, Led Zeppelin, no brainer. Lambert snarled and stared his way through 1969’s “Whole Lotta Love,” nailing those piercing high notes. If Slash doesn’t pick him up as Velvet Revolver’s new frontman, maybe Jimmy Page wants to give him a ring. OK, neither of those thing will (or should) happen, but per Paula Abdul, it was indeed a “whole lotta perfect.”

• Allison Iraheta covered Janis Joplin’s 1971 “Cry Baby,” a gut-wrenching but sort of tuneless song that went over better than the judges would have you believe. “If they ever do a biopic on Janis Joplin, you’ve got the role,” Abdul said, forgetting about the two competing Joplin biopics starring Pink and Renee Zellweger that have been in the works for years (not to mention Jenna Maroney’s highly anticipated Janet Jopler picture).

• Kris Allen jammed with Slash on the Beatles‘ 1969 track “Come Together” and “almost wanted to pee my pants.” Allen injected some air and bounce into the track, but didn’t have enough grit to impress the judges. It wasn’t wild but it was fiery and far better than …

• Danny Gokey’s “Dream On,” whose most rockin’ moment came when Gokey lobbed some major (and inadvertent) spit. Rock is clearly not his thing, but Gokey could have picked something more befitting his voice (Rod Stewart?) and spared us the sound of animal sacrifice that ended his performance. Lucky for him, Kara DioGuardi embarrassed herself worse, suggesting “Crazy” and “Cryin’ ” came out before “Dream On” (they were released in the 1990s).

And the duets:

• Natural duo Allison and Adam grinned their way through Foghat’s “Slow Ride.” These two may be the most entertaining Idol contestants the show has ever seen, and a compelling reason for otherwise uninterested rock fans to tune in.

• Kris and Danny did a meh job on an awesome tune, “Renegade” by Styx. Kris looked and sounded more like a more natural rocker and thought the harmonies were sweet, the duel riffing at end of the song was a bit irritating. One of these guys will likely exit the show tonight.

Did the final four pick the right songs? What might have worked better? We’ll take your playlists in the comments.

Plus, look back at Season Eight, in photos.

Adam is just fabulous. Why hasn’t someone picked him up. He’s got the whole package. Come on people wake up!!!!!!! HE’S FANTASTIC

VA Joe | 5/6/2009, 8:53 am EST

Adam and Allison are the best rockers since the “D” man. Rockers usually never make it this far but Adam is most likely the idol even though he has been in the game. Allison is the true idol, unfounded to date but the key is MARKETING. She looked fab last night!!!!!!!!!!

Stevie | 5/6/2009, 8:56 am EST

Hokey Gokey is copying Adam! It doesn’t work.

That last note heard in the intro was as bad as
the performance. Go home Gokey.

Anonymous | 5/6/2009, 8:57 am EST

time for kris to hit the road

THE WHOLE PACKAGE | 5/6/2009, 9:00 am EST

Adam being referred to as “the whole package” is too funny. He is the whole package, just look at the photos on the web. His package seems to be everywhere. American Idol? I don’t think so.

jase | 5/6/2009, 9:01 am EST

ADAM IS NOT EVERYBODY’S IDEA OF AN AMERICAN IDOL. HE’S GOT THE BLACK NAIL POLISH, THE EYELINER, AND IT’S JUST TOO MUCH. COME ON, THIS IS NOT AND SHOULD NOT BE AN AMERICAN IDOL.

Sheilah | 5/6/2009, 9:02 am EST

LOVE YOU ADAM!!!!

Jeremy | 5/6/2009, 9:04 am EST

Allison did amazing last night! The duet was great! Vote for Allison

Justine | 5/6/2009, 9:06 am EST

I think Adam Lambert is a true rocker, and he delivered big last night. Love him!

Anonymous | 5/6/2009, 9:07 am EST

Kris Allen is the winner of the whole show hands down. Adam is too theatrical and allison is one dimensional. Danny Gokey can take a respectful 2nd place. i don’t think the voters who are mostly young teens will keep Adam in to fight another day. He is out there and his performace was way self indulgent. Broadway, here he comes. He will be successful no matter what happens, but IDOL come on!!!!

micky | 5/6/2009, 9:11 am EST

I love how Adam switches from rock, to theatrical, to tender and back to rock. Very exciting. The Adam and Allison duet was great, but Adam is always my favorite.

George | 5/6/2009, 9:11 am EST

Adam is clearly the best. I have to wonder though, when it gets down to the final, if he will simply be too gay to win?

MaryKS | 5/6/2009, 9:13 am EST

I thought Allison did great, but I would have liked to hear her sing some Joan Jett – I think that would have been even better.

Kdub | 5/6/2009, 9:15 am EST

Adam doesn’t need the “American Idol” title, but he is the reason I’m watching this season. It is still great watching him freak people out! Best yet.

R T Johnson | 5/6/2009, 9:15 am EST

I agree w/your assessment more than the judges’ assessment. Allison did better than the judges gave her credit for. SP seemed to suggest that it was her night to go home until the kick-a duet w/Adam. I also agree that Kris was better than Gokey, although the judges’ comments seemed to indicate that they opined otherwise.

ATL Carol | 5/6/2009, 9:17 am EST

Wow, not my favorite genre for AI but…WOW. Adam continues to astonish me. Amazing pipes and tremendous versatility make him the best Idol of all seasons. Allison should cruise to the finals with him if her followers work hard. Chris and Danny?? They can both sing but marketability? Chris all the way. Danny is a one-dimensional performer.

Lori | 5/6/2009, 9:17 am EST

I’m so glad someone finally touched on Kara’s idiocracy. If you don’t know what you are talking about you probably shouldn’t comment. I think someone should vote HER off!!

MisterHate | 5/6/2009, 9:19 am EST

Slash on Ameerican Idol. Sheesh. I wonder if he took off that overplayed tophat. What a jacka$$.

Brittany | 5/6/2009, 9:19 am EST

Kris Allen bit the dust last night. He was so out of hid element it was sad. He and Danny are definitely in the bottom two tonight. I’m not sure who will go home though. Here’s hoping for a Kris Allene farewell.

Ashley | 5/6/2009, 9:19 am EST

Ok people. Let’s be honest- last night’s show just…hurt. Adam may have been amazing, but for non-rockers, it was just weird. I’ll have to take the judges’ word on this one whether or not it was good. Allison is incredible, but again, I’m not a rocker so I don’t know if it was good compared to the original or not. Still love her though. The judges did Kris too dirty though!! Can we talk about that? It was so ugly and he didn’t deserve that. Gokey on the other hand was terrible. Let’s just admit that. Great guy, great voice, awful performance both times. I love american idol and I was so confused and uncomfortable with last night’s show I didn’t even vote.

Kerry Kolsch | 5/6/2009, 9:23 am EST

Adam should win because he is the most talented. This is a singing contest, not a sex contest. Win or lose, he will be the superstar of his generation.

Anna | 5/6/2009, 9:23 am EST

Adam and Allison fantastic. they both should be in finals.

Kris and Gokey | 5/6/2009, 9:23 am EST

This was an incredible fiasco for Kris and Gokey! They completely failed last night. THis only proves that they can ONLY do that one karaoke trick and that’s where they end. Kris was clearly boring, plane, with no vocals, he sounds like he is reciting songs, .. I have nothing against less vocals, but there has to be come charisma , something interesting. Kris has NOTHING to offer – Simond had it right last night. “like eating ice for lunch” you do not remember any of it, it does not move you in any way….music for depressed people. Gokey just pathetically ridiculled himself by trying to “once again” copy Adam- GOKEY WAKE UP !!!! YOU will NOT EVER reach brilliancy of Adam Lambert. Adam is just simply NATURAL. Itis a gif from God!!! You are karaoke mediocre singer, one of so many there, and you will be lost among them ….you have nothing UNIQUE or SPECIAL to offer.
ADAM WAS FANTASTIC!!!! He completely stole the entire show (once again)!!! Allison was OK too…. Those two should be in finals. ADAM HAS WON THIS COMPETITION A LOOOOONG TIME AGO!!

Anna | 5/6/2009, 9:24 am EST

Adam and Allison fantastic. they both should be in finals.

AdamLover | 5/6/2009, 9:25 am EST

Adam’s sexuality does not seem to be an issue to his younger fans. He is clearly so far above all of the others. The duet with Allison was amazing. They should be the top 2, Adam in at # 1 of course!!

kasha | 5/6/2009, 9:25 am EST

why do people think Allison is “unfounded”? Do your research! They all have a “professional” backgroud, as does most everyone who hits the IDOL stage.

Adam is the best singer to ever hit the IDOL stage. His vocal range is unbelievable and for those who think he can’t sing – check out what professional musicians have to say about him.

should only be 3 judges | 5/6/2009, 9:26 am EST

Kara DioGuardi has little to add.
See U

aguy7 | 5/6/2009, 9:27 am EST

“Come Together” is not the right choice when you only get to sing one song. It doesn’t have enough stand-alone appeal and doesn’t rock enough. It’s a lyrics-dominant song rather than tune-dominant. It makes you think but not rock.

J Man | 5/6/2009, 9:28 am EST

AI can try as hard as they want to force a winner in Adam (and the judges ARE!!), but real Rock fans will never truly accept a winner of a Pop talent show as one of their own. Don’t believe me? Read this article again, the SHOW has no credibility with Rock critics…and it probably shouldn’t.

BMan | 5/6/2009, 9:29 am EST

Kris has the most “All Around” versitile style. I think that he has the population appeal that SHOULD take get him the votes!!

CrystalSpyder4 | 5/6/2009, 9:31 am EST

Major kudos to Allison for her song choice. First, thank goodness she had the good taste to pay tribute to the greatest female rock vocalist ever, Janis Joplin. Given Allison’s style, it was inevitable and very appropriate to attempt one of her songs. Granted, NO ONE can do Janis but Janis, but Allison as always, delivered one of the best performances. Importantly, she also stayed clear of a predictable song choice. “Cry Baby” is another great hit by Janis (it does appear on all her hits compilations, so it’s definitely not obscure); thank goodness Allison avoided the overdone “Piece Of My Heart”. Kara suggested she do this, but that get very annoying…all too often on AI, the singers go with the most overexposed songs. Allison will have considerably more rock cred for going with a less overplayed number. The judges deride the contestants for their “safe” song choices; maybe they need to have the finger pointed at themselves on occasion. Also…WTG Allison for correcting Simon on the whole Jefferson Airplane “Somebody To Love” issue (No disrespect to Queen, of course). Simon once again proves he needs to brush up on his rock classics if he is to be judging a music show.

Danny Gokey is a fine singer, but he’s proving further and further how “safe” his style is. He’s a little too adult contemporary for this genre. Sadly, if he wins, it’s further proof that AI is all too often a popularity contest. Chris…nice talented guy…but he’s going home this week, or next.

Adam…what more needs to be said. Thanks for getting the Led out on AI, amazing work!

salotur | 5/6/2009, 9:36 am EST

Adam is the most talented by far and amazing to watch every week. Chris and Danny are starting to bore me – if they win they’ll end up like Taylor Hicks. Nice guy, wouldn’t pay a dime to see him

Lisa | 5/6/2009, 9:36 am EST

I can’t believe some of you come to rollingstone.com and complain about rockers wearing eyeliner and black nail polish. Perhaps you would fit in better over at betterhomesandgardens.com.

Adam brings the pipes and stage presence that has been missing in rock music for decades. I believe we live in very exciting times to be able to witness the rebirth of 70’s & 80’s style glam rock, and I for one think it’s long overdue.

ROK | 5/6/2009, 9:38 am EST

Hey..last night’s show was interesting to say the least and I could have predicted how the top 4 would have done. You do not become the A. Idol based on one or 2 week’s ‘genre’ being performed. That is what frustrates me..base it on talent. I doubt most of our best vocalists/bands could play well in every genre. Do they have talent or not? My take…they all have talent. Gokey is Gokey..you always get a “Gokey” performance. He can sing..I like his sound. He has a story..America loves a story and he is sweet. Last night was a bit dreadful! Allison can sing..but I do not believe has all it takes…she is young and for me is not the best of the 4! Kris has a beautiful style and does have great ability when it comes to working with the musical score. He has been consistently good. He will record very soon even if not voted this year’s Idol! Adam always knocks me out of my seat…he has what it takes all the way around. That’s what is important!! Honestly..I think they will all make out okay!

DH | 5/6/2009, 9:40 am EST

First of all, Adam is the best technical singer, no doubt. BUT….I can only stand that high pitch tone for so long before he drives me up the wall. I loved him in the slow, tender ballads, but once the screaming and high pitch starts, I’m done. His facial expressions and the habit of sticking his tongue out is a total turn off as well. Alison is way TOO under-rated. That girl is awesome. Kris & Danny both bombed, Danny especially on the awful note at the end, but they both have much more “listenable” voices in the long run, especially to non-rockers. It’s unfortunate they picked Rock week to be so close to the end – hmm….wonder if that was to ensure their favored Adam would make it all the way.

All in all, I think Kris will be sent packing. But should he? I don’t know….after Rock week, yes, but OVERALL, no.

Tom | 5/6/2009, 9:41 am EST

Adam was the best last night for sure I think he will be a sucess regardless, Kris was week but has been my favorite to win. I feel he would do the best with the Idol material. Allison sang the wrong song i would like to hear her sing janice Ians 17 i think she would be able to connect with the lyrics for once. Danney may be in trouble. i would like to hear the contestants sing their own material and hope they can write.

Jenny | 5/6/2009, 9:43 am EST

Adam has been put down for being too “showy” but, he proved that he embodies rock and roll with his eerily similar Robert Plant homage, and accomplished it without sounding copycat. He’s the real thing. Slash is ridiculous to put down American Idol. He’s kind of a big has been and should be honored to have been a guest mentor, not sitting there tweeting how gay he was for being seated there. In your article, you muse that he should sing for Slash or Page, and then chuffed, but it shouldn’t happen. Why the heck now? Page was looking for a lead singer to go on tour with Bonham and Jonesy, and with a little imagination any Zep fan could see how this would WORK! Pagey should pay attention. Adam is going to be a superstar. They couldn’t do better.

Would someone please play these judges an album by Nine Inch Nails?

Mpls Fan | 5/6/2009, 9:46 am EST

Adam is hands down one of the best in the history of AI. Forget his back ground – the man’s range is off the charts. Allison should compete in the final but Danny has many older fans – which will make next week interesting if he survives. Kris has a place in music and will do well on the radio but I don’t know if he can survive tonight.

Adam Fan | 5/6/2009, 9:48 am EST

Adam keeps getting better and better and better!!! I agree that Allison and Adam would be a dynamic final two, but, as good as she is, Allison doesn’t move me, maybe because no one can come close to Adam this year. I agree that both of them were sensational last night, in their own ways.

Allison really is like a little Janis Joplin, and Adam is like a new Elvis/Robert Plant. It’s neat to see two viable new performers emerge.

My only complaints with Adam and Allison are his hair stylist, lol. The hair for both of them detracts more than attracts, but, rock is about bad hair, so it’s all good.

Paula was right about Allison playing a young Janis. Much closer than Pink. Allison has that flat face and is ugly/cute like Janis, and possesses the same kind of raspy whiskey voice with perfect pitch.

Aubry | 5/6/2009, 9:54 am EST

Adam is amazing. He can and does sing everything exceptionally but ROCK IS HIS THING. I have been waiting for someone on Idol to attempt Zep on the show. Adam killed it. Win or not Adam is a star. I can’t wait to see him live in his own show on tour.

Please let tonight be the night America puts the GO in Gokey. His Dream on was WRETCHED. He tried to out sing Kris in the duet.

Hopefully Allison is safe. Only an Adam-Allison finale holds any interest for me.

Kris is good but BORING.

Liked that Castro kid better.

L Chop | 5/6/2009, 9:54 am EST

Adam IS being followed my music industry A&R friends of mine. He will have a great career. He is so far beyond the others, it is a joke. He probably won’t win American Idol because the sheeple like watered down mediocre trash. Adam is in a Rock Star league. Too theatrical?…how about Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, Jim Morrison, Steven Tyler, Bono, David Bowie…etc…It’s called being a star!

judges confused | 5/6/2009, 9:55 am EST

I think the judges are someone what confused and don’t know what they are talking about. Adam and Allison were amazing. To say Allison didn’t nail her song is crazy. That was the best rendition of that song I have heard in years. Kris was on point and to say otherwise is crazy. I like Danny, but last night was painful. The judges giving props to Danny over Kris was so off base. Maybe they need to watch the show back and get there comments together. Usually the judges have been right on, but this year not so much.

Lito S. | 5/6/2009, 10:01 am EST

Personally, I think Adam has pipes but no rock and roll edge. Yes, he hit the high notes but they lacked both soul and mad desire. a Deep Purple song woulda been more apt: Highway Star.

Allison has a soulful edge and rock and roll grit. Of the solo performances, I felt her vocals conveyed the emotion of the song.

Kris did a decent job. It wasn’t bad, but it diod sound like he started the vocals a beat too early.

Danny Cockey er Gokey was out of his element. And the judges called him on it, but his lens-crafter promoting ego wouldn’t listen.

T.M. | 5/6/2009, 10:01 am EST

Ok. I agree Adam nailed it as usual. No big surprise there. He was genetically engineered for this genre. But Siman having a screaming ‘O’ about it all night was a bit much. Calling him original was a bit of a stretch. There are a couple of reason why people don’t do Zeppelin in public. Either you sound just like Plant or you suck. Adam sounded just like Plant. He knocked it out of the park. But he WAS NOT ORIGINAL.

Craig | 5/6/2009, 10:02 am EST

Adam takes a lot of heat for his banshee notes, but, he’s proven how he can take it down to a breathtaking whisper and move the listener to tears. People get so bent out of shape when he goes into orbit with his impossible range. If he only did ballads, he would be dismissed as dull.

i think homophobia and antisemitism are the main and only reasons people may have for dismissing him, because he is probably the best singer ever on American Idol. He has risen to the challenge of every genre, well, except country, but, he was spectacular by turning “Ring of Fire” into a modern goth anthem.

Allison is fabulous, truly, but, here’s the thing. She’s nothing different than literally thousands of chick singers, at least to me. I enjoy watching her on American Idol, and i love her voice, but, I wouldn’t buy her records, and I think if people would be honest, they would realize they wouldn’t download her, or buy her songs. Despite a wonderful voice and great pitch, she doesn’t add anything new or different. In fact, she picks dull songs, in my opinion, and that’s always disappointing to me, because, I would love to hear her give me chills the way Adam does.

Another thing about Allison is that she doesn’t have a good look. She’s only 16/17 but has a very hardened look. If someone told me she was 45 I would believe them. I know that seems petty, but, this industry is about image as much as about sound.

Now, she could be another Janis, who was not conventionally pretty, but, Janis Joplin had more than a great voice, but, a truly unique take on classic blues songs and added something different. Allison doesn’t add anything new that I can see, but, I think she’ll have a decent career. But, even that’s not a given.

She won the telemundo version of Idol, with a recording contract that never came to fruition for legal reasons, but, she has had the exposure that everyone balks Adam has and should be disqualified. She actually has more experience, and yet, hasn’t attracted the fan base, despite her talent.

Sometimes it is more than talent alone, but, a kind of alchemy and chemistry that combines sex appeal, personality and talent. Maybe it’s because she’s young, but, she doesn’t convey any personality that connects people to her. Last night, she was snotty with Simon, and that didn’t help.
She seems a little empty-headed, to be honest.

I don’t mean to cut her down, without considering her poise for a kid, and talent, which is definitely there. I just don’t see how anyone can compare her to someone like Adam, who is flaming hot, and whose only down side is his sexual orientation and being Jewish. It’s a shame we live in a world where that is enough to turn people against him, when he has a once in a lifetime kind of talent and appeal.

T.M. | 5/6/2009, 10:05 am EST

Although I did laugh out loud when Kara said Danny should have chosen an “earlier” Aerosmith song like “Cryin” or “Crazy”

CT | 5/6/2009, 10:06 am EST

Does anyone else think Kris looked really pissed off last night? I think something else was up…maybe the dress rehearsal mishap??? Didn’t like the duet thing??

Kazenmax | 5/6/2009, 10:07 am EST

Adam is gross…. Can’t take the squealing high notes in EVERY song… makes all his songs sound the same.

Gokey has too much soul for silly rock songs.

Allison is the only true rocker. She’s cute and can sing. She should be the next idol!

CT | 5/6/2009, 10:08 am EST

I want to like Adam Lambert and buy into the hype.

I’m sorry though – WAY too polished and clean sounding. Totally suspicious. Not just of him. I feel like 90% of each performance is pre-recorded.

Samantha | 5/6/2009, 10:12 am EST

I had to add my 2 cents after reading someone state that Adam wasn’t rock and roll? Huh?!!!! WTH? He outsang Robert Plant, the previous reigning voice of classic rock, and he blew Slash to bits! I bet Jimmy Page had a heart attack, or will have one when he views his performance. That was the best rock performances ever on American Idol, anyway, eclipsing Dougherty’s great performances on the show.

The great thing about Adam is that he has all components of the great rock singers, and can sing sweetly, like Paul McCartney, or strut and snarl like Mick Jagger. His rendition of “Mad World” was probably the most amazing performance I have ever seen on American Idol.

Rock is all about showmanship. Kara may have misstated some rock facts, but, she accurately summarized his strengths as being the combinations of classic rock of the seventies, glam rock of the eighties, and the goth metal spookiness of the 90s and 2000s.

He is not only rock, he is literally the resurrection of rock at a time when rock has been poisoned by rap, crap and boredom.
He is the resurrection of the rock god, looking like Elvis, sounding like Plant and Mercury, strutting like Jagger and Bowie, and he’s the most exciting singer to emerge from American Idol, leaving every last past and present contestant in the dust.

I think people who like to put him down are anti-gay, period.

Anonymous | 5/6/2009, 10:15 am EST

I am of this era. Adam gave me goosebumps! He nailed it! Allison was a close second, but I also think she should have chosen another song. Joplin? Yes. “Cry Baby”? No. I think Gokey is good, but he was like a fish out of water last night. Terrible. And, Kris is cute, but mediocre at best. Kris is going home. Unless we have some of the drama like Sanjaya did.

kate | 5/6/2009, 10:17 am EST

Adam once again amazed me. He really can sing and when he performs I can not take my eyes off of him. I love his take on the songs. His mad world was the best ever. I am never bored and if he wasn’t on american idol … I would have pulled the plug along time ago and stopped watching. The others basically all sound alike. Out of those three I would say that Allison was very good as well. Myself, I enjoyed Adam and Allison’s duet but Kris and Danny’s was terrible and I couldn’t wait for it to be over.
I really like that Adam toned down his performance last nite and just rocked. He was by far the best one of the nite. For all you non Adam fans who keep going on about Adam being to theatrical … you are probably the ones who voted Taylor Hicks as your idol … which I never did understand … he may not have been theatrical but which is better … theatrics or watching someone who looks like they have turrets while trying to preform the song. Maybe Adam should take stage and wail around some and then maybe he would get your vote. So in my opinion Kris should go tonight … then Danny or lastly Allison.

scott l. | 5/6/2009, 10:20 am EST

Adam is the only reason to watch Idol this season. I can see why he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but, it’s absurd to put down his singing.

Kris has been my second favorite, by far. I didn’t think he was fairly criticized last night, because, he did a better job than Gokey, yet, was put down by all four judges. I really like his style and probably was not alone in liking how he did a great John Lennon song, without copycatting it.

Danny was not very good last night. I can’t understand this guy. He’s a big disappointment. I thought he would be fantastic this season, but, he’s chosen terrible songs that don’t suit him all season. He should be wowwing us, but, some weeks, he’s dreadful.
If I had to pick someone to leave tonight, it would be Danny, but, I have a feeling it will be Kris by the way he was knocked down by the judges.

Allison has the talent to succeed, but, she doesn’t really pick good songs either, or doesn’t reach through to me. She should be safe tonight, though, because she was certainly better than Danny, but, you never know. She lacks something, not quite sure what. Maybe it’s because we forget how young she is. I am constantly distracted by her hair. For some reason, it annoys me, and makes her look weird. It’s a shame she isn’t prettier. Maybe we’re that shallow as a society, but, I can’t see her having a huge career or following, even though for Idol, she’s worthy of being a finalist.

kate | 5/6/2009, 10:21 am EST

I apologize for the turrets comment … just not a fan of Taylor Hicks
American Idol is a singing show and well if you are being honest Adam has the best voice

Michelle | 5/6/2009, 10:21 am EST

While some will say that Danny didn’t do GREAT at least he stuck with the genre of the week. He is not a Rock singer. He went for it though! He is amazing! Last night was all about the judges being pissed cause Adam was in the bottom three last week. Get him of the bottom three for ratings. It mad me so incredibly sick that I don’t think I will ever watch AI again! I can’t stand to hear Adam sing!! He makes my skin crawl! At least there was no sickening renditions of ROCK songs like the one Lambert did for Ring of Fire on COUNTRY night!!

BMan | 5/6/2009, 10:22 am EST

I didn’t see last nights show, but will view it tonight. My overall view at this point has been that Adam (probably the most talented)has the type of voice caliber of a Freddy Mercury, but his appeal is more Broadway style. I don’t think that it is contemporary and it is what Simon describes as SELF INDULGENT. Allison is beyond her age of 16 and is tremendously talented. With a little more maturity she has a lot of potential. Danny Kokey is really good too, but I think that he is the least of the 4 left. Apparently, last nights performance (based on the comments that I heard) was probably Kris’ worse night, but he wasn’t terrible from what I’ve gathered. Kris’ other performaces FOR ME, have spoke to my opinion that he SHOULD win this competition.

Dalton | 5/6/2009, 10:23 am EST

So I hate Adam, I really really do.
But the fact that he sung a duet with Allison…
It was brilliant.

The judges say Adam saved Allison, but I believe Allison might have helped Adam.

Vote for Allison, she deserves to win this so bad!!!

Patti | 5/6/2009, 10:24 am EST

adam is simpley the best performer AI ever had.His versitility and his range and how he transforms h imself every week is amazing!!!!I love him. make a record go on tour I am there. great job Adam!!!!

I think Gokey should be in big trouble after last night. He really picked the wrong song.

However, he at least stayed within the genre. Adam, on the other hand, has rearely done this and received praise by the judges. What a crock. Why even give genres if he is allowed to to some weird Indian-screechy thingy when it was supposed to be country? He always sounds the same to me.

Kris is amazingly boring. I doubt Alison will win, but I feel ultimately she will have the most successful carreer.

Kate from Cal. | 5/6/2009, 10:26 am EST

ADAM ROCKS! He blew my MIND last night!!!! I can’t wait for each week to see what Adam will do. He scores home runs every week. I love his soft side, his bluesy and jazzy side, and even his broadway side. But, he is the definition of rock god, and probably the best thing to happen to rock and roll since Elvis, who he looks so much like.

What was neat was how he sounded like Plant from Zeppelin, yet, it didn’t sound like he was imitating him. It blew my mind.

I was looking forward to him singing a Plant song all season, and was more than rewarded for my desire. He satisfied the need.

OUTSTANDING performer. I have downloaded everything of his on ITunes and will be in line to buy tickets to see him perform.

In fact, I’ve never gone to an Idol concert, but, have seriously considered going for Adam. I wasn’t going to watch Idol this season, in fact, and a friend turned me on to Adam like the third week of the final 13 and I’m back each week for more.

Adam is the ONLY American idol!

Debbie | 5/6/2009, 10:27 am EST

Adam was awesome last night! Very few professional singers could touch a Zepplin song and make it work. Adam killed it! The duet with Allison was great as well. Adam just proved again WHY he should be the winner of this season’s Idol. With or without “The Idol Title” he will be laughing all the way to the bank!!! His music will sell out in the stores!

GGB | 5/6/2009, 10:33 am EST

Have to add my kudos to Adam Lambert, GLAMBERT! He’s the man. Awesome singer. I was really annoyed by the guy-liner and makeup originally but was converted by his amazing talent. To be honest, I’ve never seen or heard anything like him. He inspires each week, and has been the only contestant to do justice to each different genre, while maintaining his signature sound. He certainly is a rocker, in addition to a whole lotta perfect in every genre so far this season. I loved some of his softer songs, like “Tears of a Clown” and “Mad World.” But, I was watching some of the videos of him this season, like “Satisfaction”, “Black and White”, and “Play that funky music” and it is truly amazing how diverse he is, and his range, not only vocally, but, in performance art, is different from any other rock singer alive today, or from long ago. The truth is that he’s actually a better singer than Elvis and Robert Plant, and these two men helped define rock and roll from beginning to end. Adam is like a breath of fresh air from all the other karaoke sounding sound-a-likes and amateurs.

I do enjoy the others, but, it’s hard to maintain any enthusiasm for anyone but Adam this season. The others are unfortunately overshadowed by his beauty, talent and powerful charism.

A rock Fan | 5/6/2009, 10:35 am EST

Adam has lead the way in this competion by the way he dresses up and delivers his songs the others just follow him. I am a Led Zeplin Fan from when they first started and believe me Adam did them proud.Adan was great, Allison sang it like Jaz not Rock and Kris sang like he was drowning (since when was the Beatles Rock they were POP)Danny was doing great until the end when he SCREAMED the last notes.By the way to all who say that Adam screams what Danny did is called SCREAMING what Adam does is sings very high notes not scream.

Val | 5/6/2009, 10:36 am EST

Adam is the most controversial of the contestants and may not win AI because of it, but he is in a class by himself. None of the others have his voice, range, stage presence, or artistry. He will sell a lot of records and will sell a lot of concert tickets. Maybe Allison gets there in a few others. None of the others will have huge commercial appeal. And the music industry already knows this … trust me

Rockr | 5/6/2009, 10:37 am EST

I cannot even guess who the American public will choose to win Season 8. However, I personally would never buy Chris’ or Danny’s music or ever see them perform. I would totally buy Adam’s and Allison’s music & would love to see them perform. 17 year old Allison will only get better. She’s come a long way on this show already. Adam knows how to work a crowd, he’s a blast to watch. Chris & Danny are nice guys, but they do not draw me in.

jcc | 5/6/2009, 10:37 am EST

Gokey was terrible – I voted hundreds of times for Kris! He deserves to make it to next week. DANNY GOKEY MUST GO HOME!

Gabriel – Adam was the clear standout performer last night, he will win AI this year. Danny tried, rock isn’t his thing but I like his rich voice. Kris tries so hard but runs out of air, I like him but he has a specific thing he’s good at. Allison did pretty good last night.

adam is just so out in front it isnt worth arguing over. allison ia also awesome and should come 2nd!! adam has the whole package to make it world wide. i dont understand why some of you american’s (im from england) cant accept if adam is gay!!!why the hell does it matter!!!! forget his sexuality and concentrate on his amazing music abilities!!

Kinkster | 5/6/2009, 10:47 am EST

@ Lisa, I know right?

People compalining about Adam’s OTT style, guyliner etc obviously clicked on he wrong web page, they should be at gardensfrous or The Kris Allen website!

Aam and Allison rocked last night

Kris Allen put me to sleep as usual ad Danny Gokey killed my cat’s ears!

Indie | 5/6/2009, 10:53 am EST

I will cry if Kris goes home, but, anyone who made it to the top four has had great exposure and will have the opportunity to record. So congrats to all four, no matter who goes home.

Adam will most likely win, and that’s the way it should be, because, he has a voice that has never been heard on American Idol. Whether he goes on to Broadway, movies, or rock bands with Slash and Jimmy Page, he will have a huge following. I was a reluctant convert along with others, won over by weeks of demonstrating consistently powerful style and perfect vocals.

But, as talented as he is, there are people who are turned off by his flamboyance and glamor puss personality.

I just liked Kris because he’s been overlooked by the judges all season, it seems… It’s the fans who’ve kept him alive, but, that may be waning.

THe judges definitely prefer Gokey and Adam, with Allison getting good grades, but, not always home runs.

I hate to say it but Allison’s looks go against her, but, she has great potential, and maybe with time, she’ll lose that trashy neon hair. On some rock chicks, it’s part of the attitude to have funny hair, but, on her, it makes her look like a hard crack ho, to be honest. Too bad. She has a great voice, but, bad look and no personality to speak of.

SMZ | 5/6/2009, 10:57 am EST

Slash on Idol? What has happend to the music industry? This is all your fault Axl! I am now glad Cobain and Staley have left us. I couldn’t handle seeing them on this garbage show!

Ryan James | 5/6/2009, 10:59 am EST

Gokey should’ve done some Doobie Bros, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Allman Bros… maybe even [dare I say it] Springstein… BUT definitely not anything by Aerosmith

Kris Allen should’ve gone with Eagles, Joe Walsh

MOE | 5/6/2009, 11:00 am EST

It is clearly obvious the show is manipulated. Adam has been last on what? – the last 2 or 3 shows and on Rock Night he goes first. PLEASE no one was going to sound good after he performed. Since Danny and Kris are clearly not rockers wouldn’t it have been fair to pair each up with someone who was – HELLO! I for one will not be watching the show next year. It is clear who the station has picked and if Adam doesn’t win I will be shocked. Not that Adam couldn’t win on his own accord, but the bottom line is producing a good show no matter how America votes.

Zepfan | 5/6/2009, 11:01 am EST

You know when Adam channelled his inner Zep, and stood there on stage thrilling the world with his beguiling Elvis-ness and rock godlike stance, I thought of the original Zep with blond god Plant and the black haired magical Jimmy Page and realized if Adam paired with Jimmy Page, as the article mused, it would look so cool with Page now this snow-white haired legend and Lambert, who could be the reincarnation of some fallen rock god like Elvis or John Lennon. Lambert’s got more than mad talent. He’s got this supernatural aura that surrounded Led Zeppelin.

I know the writer of the article was joking, but, I can totally see Page and Lambert, the eighth and best American idol!

It’s funny because 27 is the superstitious year when so many other rockstars die, but, with Adam, at 27, it’s when he was born.

adam lame-bert | 5/6/2009, 11:07 am EST

why can’t everyone notice he sings every song the exact same? You know exactly when he’s going to do the weird scream thing which always seems to end around thew same note. The dude can sing, but take away the theatrics and he’s not as original as everyone gives him credit for.

BTW, Gokey was BAD last night. What was he thinking with that last yell? That may have been the worst thing I’ve ever seen on American Idol past the final 16 contestants.

NY Dee | 5/6/2009, 11:07 am EST

I am blown away week after week by Adam Lambert. I felt sorry for the others last night because they were overshadowed by a unique and powerful star on the rise. Someone with Adam’s talent is once in a lifetime. The other singers seem oddly karaoke when contrasted with Adam.

I enjoy Allison, and thought she was so good last night, but, she doesn’t have anything I haven’t heard before. However, she was good last night with Adam. I think she’ll be safe, and could possibly make the final two, but, she doesn’t hold a candle to Adam, in terms of winning. However, many a runner up has gone on to have careers, so, she’s already secured the same kind of opportunity as Adam. Whether she will fizzle out is up to the fans. For some reason, she reminds me of Jordin Sparks who had a big following during the show, but, couldn’t maintain the fan base on her own. Same with the grey haired guy who won a few years ago.

Mom of four girls | 5/6/2009, 11:07 am EST

After all these weeks people are finally getting Adam…he’s getting annoying!!He is above trying other gneres. All the other contestants TRY, but Adam NOOO,all his songs sound the same. All the comments above about his tongue and screaming that one note in every song is right on the money. I have been watching Idol since season 2 and I have never sean such disrespect toward that contestants as I have seen toward Kris and Danny las night. What is right, they are not in Adam’s league…they don’t make me want to
take a shower after I see them. Adam is kind of sleezy. I am an educated, married woman with children, who enjoys all types of music, and Adam is no “rocker” I have 4 daughters, ranging in age from 19 to 13 and not one of them Adam to be the “whole package”. He is a great performer and would have a great career on Broadway or Vegas, but he is too sleezey for Idol. Allison has a great voice and is far more of a “rocker” tthan Adam could ever be, because it comes more natural to her, Adam is trying WAY to hard. Kris will have a great career in the Pop industry and Danny can sing most anything and will do very well also. He is a likable guy. They are all deserving of being in the top 4, but 3 out of the 4 know who and what they are…the 4th is kind of a mess, toooo much of everything, tooo over the top, trying toooo hard.

CJ | 5/6/2009, 11:10 am EST

What’s this Adam bashing about? It’s all about gay-bashing because this guy is the most talented contestant ever, EVER on Idol, and everyone is watching this year for him.

The others are good singers, no question about it, but, none of them have the x factor.

Hoss | 5/6/2009, 11:13 am EST

Well I think Adam entertained as usually and was the best..but a close second even though she did not really pick the right song but did a great job with it…is Allison and with the right song….watch out for allison….such a voice for a young lady….

RJ | 5/6/2009, 11:13 am EST

Let’s stay focused people… Adam is good, but he’s no Robert Plant. He’s more of a Sebastian Bach. He could kill “I Remember You” but doesn’t have the grit for “When the Levee Breaks”

Observer | 5/6/2009, 11:13 am EST

Adam is in a class by himself, but he’s like Carly Smithson, and others who have already tried their luck in the pro world and then resorted to Idol. I am not sure after last week that Adam will make the final cut. Idol is about people who never had a break finally getting one. Adam came FROM Broadway, having already done Wicked. It’s kind of like pitting a pro athlete against the amateurs-which isn’t fair.

josh | 5/6/2009, 11:21 am EST

adam cant sing, every song he sings sounds the same but if you listen to his voice you dont hear anything special about it. danny kris and allison have all the talent. matt can out sing all of them but hey who am i. anyways the point is adam has this hold on everyone and he really has no business being in the top 4. america sucked at voted and everyone knows it… adam should be gone already

Miguel | 5/6/2009, 11:21 am EST

I’m reading people’s comments about Adam and Allison. And I gotta remind you all that Allison is only 16 years old — with a voice like that, she’s got a huge future.

Adam clearly remains the fave to win Idol ‘09. But this has got to be the strongest Top 4 of any season.

I’m continually impressed week after week.

AI FAN | 5/6/2009, 11:23 am EST

Danny and Kris are AWESOME.

Mississippi K | 5/6/2009, 11:30 am EST

I don’t understand what the people who “hate” Adam are so afraid of: that he’s gay, his nail polish and guyliner are weird, his high voice/screaming is hard to listen to, etc. Are you all really afraid that if you like his singing that you are somehow approving of alternative lifestyles? Or is it that you can’t get past the fact that he is different.

As far as I can tell, Adam is a talented, well-mannered, and good-hearted person. He is amazingly talented and yet is usually humble. And I never recall another AI finalist helping competitors before.

I have a suggestion: play an audio track by Adam and listen to it. You may not like him, but you can’t deny that he has a pitch-perfect 3+ octave range and an amazingly broad portfolio of work.

Even if you don’t like his music, can you please leave the hate behind.

Note to Danny detractors: Danny doesn’t deserve to get “hate” comments either.

Hoss | 5/6/2009, 11:30 am EST

What is a idol??….someone who will stand the test of time…who has the time?? …well Allison could be groomed to being that …what a voice…and I think she has lots of personality…for someone so young and under all that pressure week after week…America will judge and hopefully judge to singing ability..Allison is finally impressing …keep it UP>>>you may have the best shot at becoming a TRUE AMERICAN IDOL

Linda | 5/6/2009, 11:30 am EST

I agree that Aliison is a great singer, especially for 16. She has tremendous potential, and shouldn’t be put down. It takes courage to do what she’s doing, performing week after week.

However, when it comes to sheer talent, charisma, and star quality, the prize this year is Adam Lambert’s. Many people may be turned off because he’s gay, Jewish, or too showy, but, he’s by far head and shoulders the most talented singer I’ve ever heard, on or off American Idol. I see him having a huge career, but, there are opportunities after Idol for all four remaining contestants. They’re all good.

These Adam bashers have an agenda of hate, and it really shows how small-minded they are that they would judge him based on his sexual orientation over talent, but, homophobia is alive and well in America. Too bad because there’s no other singer this year who came close to his talent.

Angela | 5/6/2009, 11:30 am EST

If this is truly a SINGING competition, Danny, Adam and Allison are the best. I could care less if you like Danny or Adam or not – they are amazing vocalists. Allison is amazing as well – especially given her age! The judges and the network appear to have their minds made up. Adam will be in the finals. Although I do agree, all of Adam’s song sound just alike. I could not understand 90% of the lyrics last night. If that makes a great Rocker – that he is!! Acid rock is not for me! That appears to be where he shines. Tracks of Tears his best performance by far! Ring of Fire was sickening. At least all the contestants stayed in the genre last night!!

The reason people are putting Allison down is that there are those who are unfairly putting Adam down while trying to build up Allison when she is ordinary in comparison. Let’s face it, she’s a one-trick pony with a very hoarse and raspy voice which is not everyone’s favorite style. I don’t think she’s been that good, although last night she was outstanding. However, she is very unattractive and hard looking and has no charisma for me personally. While she has a good voice i don’t think it’s anything that different from thousands of other rock chicks i’ve heard. I don’t see her even having a career after idol. Sorry to bash a youngster, but, she puts herself out in public to be judged, not babied.

Lori Allen | 5/6/2009, 11:34 am EST

To you people who think Adam sings everything the same, did you not hear him sing Mad World?! I’ve never missed an idol show since the very beginning of season 1 and I’ve never heard any performance as incredible as that. The only one that came close was David Cooks rendition of Billy Jean last year.

t(ruth) | 5/6/2009, 11:35 am EST

It was hard to watch Danny scream at the end of that Aerosmith song. It was terrible!
I thought Alison rocked. She should be the one to compete with Adam for the top prize. Her voice is so beautiful.Adam of course is awesome as usual. Go for it Adam and Alison. May the best man/woman wins.

Merri | 5/6/2009, 11:38 am EST

I’m sooo sick of Adam Lambert, Adam Lambert… boy/girl wonder! It’s the same ol’, same ol’ every week! Scream, scream scream..
If you really notice in the close up shots of his face, he actually has girlish features. (I’m sure that comment will be a compliment to him/her). He’s being pimped to death by the judges so I’m sure that’s who they’ll decide on in the end. You think your votes count, think again. As for “Idol” is Adam really what you would like to emulate? Ugg.

Jason | 5/6/2009, 11:39 am EST

Adam will win this year, no contest. Kris and Dnany were awful last night. Allison was good when she sang with Adam and that may save her for another week, but, mabe not. I don’t care for her voice but last night she was great. She was made to sing rock but Adam is a rock god. Danny was by far the worst last night. He’s so overhyped. I don’t know why the judge seem to favor him other than his backstory of his wife dying seems to go well with their shmaltzy image.

Adam is amazing. He won me over relatively late in the show but now I look foward to him singing where the others are kind of boring.

Andre | 5/6/2009, 11:41 am EST

I agree that the final two should be allison and adam. I think they’re the best by far but adam is this year’s american idol.

Mississippi K | 5/6/2009, 11:45 am EST

Observer – please get your facts straight. Adam was never on Broadway, he was an understudy in the touring company. Kris has a CD, and Alison won the Telemundo signing competition (record contract and $50K prize at 15). Danny has been a professional musician (self-description) for several years. None of the Final 4 is without some experience. It’s not new to Idol to have experienced contestants: David A. won Star Search in 2004, David C. was a professional performer with a band, etc.

Cal | 5/6/2009, 11:47 am EST

Allison has it hard this season I think. I think her performance was a lot better than what the judges thought about it! Allison needs to be in the final 2! She’s great and it would be nice to see a girl take back the idol win!

Kathy64 | 5/6/2009, 11:48 am EST

This is MY era (R&R)!!! Loved every minute of Adam’s solo – the duet with Allison was the icing on the cake. Adam ROCKS – in every sense of the word and it’s been fun watching his personality emerge over the past weeks from dark and guarded to the open and genuinely “glad to be here” person he is now.

As to the comments that he always sounds the same – well, DUH! He sticks to who he is whether it’s country or rock. The fact that he has such command of his voice – not to mention the fact that he can channel Plant and Elvis at will – is phenomenal – the point is that he can sing without hitting an off note or losing steam at any point in the performance.

And – yup – that’s what he does – PERFORM. He’s a born entertainer and this is just the beginning of a stellar career.

As to the others? Beginning to warm up to Allison – a kid who has talent that may or may not last, but Danny blew it last night.

Thought the judges were off base with Kris – liked his rendition of “Come Together” and have also enjoyed watching him grow over the past weeks.

All in all – one heck of a final four – the best in seasons and with more energy than we’ve seen in a long time!

reg324 | 5/6/2009, 11:52 am EST

Adam has not been on Broadway – Ten Commandments and Wicked (in which he was an UNDERSTUDY btw) were both in LA, so tired of hearing “Broadway” about him. And “screaming” – it’s not screaming when it’s pitch perfect – it’s unbelievable talent and training.

michelle | 5/6/2009, 11:54 am EST

It is really unfortunate people can’t just appreciate someone for thier talent versus picking on them about thier lifestyle. Adam is awesome, hands down, if he does not win, something is wrong with our society. I wished Allison would have chosen a different song. I like Danny but this was obviously not his genre, hopefully he gets another chance next week to show us his skills. Kris is cute and has the boy next door look. But my vote is for Adam, he has a true talent.

JJo2 | 5/6/2009, 11:56 am EST

My wife and I ar 63 and 67. We listen to Country Music most of the time. Adam is about the most incredible artist that I have had the pleasure to watch and listen to. He has the ability to do any style he desires. This young man is the ultimate entertainer. Music, Movies, TV, Broadway, he will do it all and succeed.

Over The Top? AI is not just about singing, it’s about trying to pick someone who will succeed in the industry. I would buy his CD today, and go to his concert tonight. He’s an entertainer. He’s out there putting on a show.

Screeching? Does an Opera Star hitting the high notes qualify as a Screech? I think not. His notes are precise and right on target.

I have a DVD made of his last 7 performances, and wish I had them all. At every viewing, I still am amazed.

I wish him all the luck.

QueenChiro | 5/6/2009, 11:56 am EST

Hey CT…I thought Kris looked mad too…I think at Danny. Danny was trying to outsing Kris on the duet, maybe that was it. I noticed they wouldn’t stand very close to each other at the end. Adam was perfect as usual, I thought Allison was good. I actually really liked Kris’s song and thought Gokey was awful and have liked other things he’s done. If the vote goes the way last night’s performances went, Danny should go. Like him or hate him, Adam couldn’t have been bad on Rock night. His rendition of the National Anthem on youtube was horrifically offensive though, and he lost me after seeing that.

Jod | 5/6/2009, 12:05 pm EST

If all 4 made a cd i would b one from Kris and Adam. Some people say Kris is boring, well I think he’s just a quite person, he’s very artistic, and talented, he reminds me of John Mayer or James Blunt. Adam is very inertaning. Allison is sweet, but if she does make it I don’t think it will be anylonger then 8 years. Like most rock female artist. Danny has a cute smile, but i don’t really care for him much. Good luck to all, I’ve enjoyed this season :)

idol fan | 5/6/2009, 12:07 pm EST

I think Adam is great, but am getting a little tired of all the theatrics. It’s getting a little old. The judges definitely want Adam to win and I think votes are swayed by how they judge the contestants. I think Allison did great, after all she has the Joplin kind of voice. Danny’s screamin was a bit much, but they sure love it when Adam screams. Adam will make the Idol a ton of money and that’s why they want him to win. Give someone else a chance.

AIFAN | 5/6/2009, 12:08 pm EST

I thought Danny’s song was a joke since he seems to be the comedian of the group, I thought that AI producers decided to bring in some comic relief, but one look at Kara’s wince convinced me that it wasn’t. And he actually thought he pulled it off. It was the worst performance in idol history reminiscent of some of the early week auditions. If this truly is a singing competition, his performance wouldn’t rate a middle school talent show win. It’s Danny’s turn to go.

almasu | 5/6/2009, 12:10 pm EST

Craig can insist that the only reason to dislike Adam lies in homophobia and antisemitism AND at the very same time criticize Allison’s look and imply that not being pretty will effect her career?!?!?!?!? WTF?!?!
I am neither homophobic or antisemitic and I don’t care for Adam. Yes, people… I support gay marriage and adoption and don’t like Adam. It IS possible!!! This is ridiculous and equivalent to insisting that if you don’t like Obama you are racist! I campaigned for the guy and yet can allow people the opportunity to disagree with his politics outside of race!
How is it okay to judge a 17 year old girl on how pretty she is or is not and at the very same time express outrage at people judging Adam? It is not okay ever, be it on American Idol or on the street, to judge anyone’s character or talent by their sexual orientation, skin color, age or ATTRACTIVENESS. I am talking to you, Bill O!
The thing is… Allison would not go the way of shallow pop stars exisiting only on a personal trainer shaped shell and studio mixed voice. She is not going to pursue a carreer in a genre of music than values make up and commercialized beats over substance and vocals. Who cares how pretty she is? You know who? The same peopel who care how gay Adam is. If you are going to argue for open minded tolerance, then be consistent because right now Craig, you and all the other people insisting the ONLY reason to dislike Adam is based on homophobia, sound just as narrow and close minded as the people who DO dislike him for those reasons.
I don’t like the way every single song is a performance is that he has no identitiy. The judges are always telling constestants to be true to themselves and wanting to know what kind of record they would make yet making this HUGE exception for Adam. There is never any criticism of him by the panel. It is almost like the judges are afraid of being labeled homophobic! He has had great nights, just like all four contestants left, but he has also had awful nights. How can they tell some contestants not to touch a classic like Beat It, but be open to Adam SLAUGHTERING Walk The Line? Are you kidding me? Giving credit for making it his own when it was a remake of Buckley’s rendition? What is going on!?!?!?! Adam is not a true rocker. He is a true chameleon. That is great! Fantastic! It will be a super asset back on Broadway, but for all the people who give him rocker cred…. what band did he leave behind for Idol? He slows it down for motown, he picks it up for rock night. That is great and he is talented, but let me ask you… what kind of record would he make, Randy? What is his identity? Howis he true to himself? I half expect dancers in cat costumes to creep out every time he takes the stage. That is a strength. Go with it, but don’t disparage the other contestants and their supporters because they disagree. I think last night’s performance was choppy and awful. Too over the top for me. Just my opinion. I wouldn’t buy his record, but I owuld support his right to marry. Stop JUDGING us, Craig.

WFH | 5/6/2009, 12:10 pm EST

This style of rock and role is not American Idol. It is a genre that appeals to only a relatively small segment the listening public. Not that it is “bad”, it is just not mass market and idol is all about mass market. It was an inappropriate choice as a genre, just as opera arias would be. Adam excells in this style and I can’t but wonder whether it was chosen because he has been preordained by the judges to win. I am gay, so I am not homophobic. But Adam, who is already a seasoned broadway performer should not be in this competition, or win it. He is on a league all to himself. No can deny his talent, although it is not as perfect as the judges would have us believe. He does seem to screech at some time in any style he is singing whether appropriate to the style or not. I just resent that it is preordained that he will win, just as any other professional artist with stage experience would have the advantage to win.

grammy | 5/6/2009, 12:18 pm EST

as a gramy and child of the 70s adam was soo much better. this guy is a star. I cannot wait to buy his 1st recordings. I cant wait every week to see what he does, who cares about the masacara, he is true to himself not a poser. I truly hope he wins, for he is the best singer on the show this year.

rockell | 5/6/2009, 12:19 pm EST

Come on… Who would actually go out and buy a cd by Adam and listen to it? That high pitch crap is annoying and it’s the same every song. Not to mention he’s hard to look at too. I think Kris and Allison are the most talented of the last 4.

Hoss | 5/6/2009, 12:19 pm EST

wow…I can not believe in some of the comments putting down a person on how they LOOK…This is a talent competion for singing …NOT A MISS AMERICA CONTEST…wake up..get a life…Judge on talent..everyone is unique NO matter how they look..right??? …so..wake UP>>>vote on the best voice…best potential…..vote wise…with heart….

Lizz, Clearwater, FL | 5/6/2009, 12:19 pm EST

While Adam sings his heart out every week, everything he sings sounds the same. He will go far in the business whether he wins Idol or not. My personal pick for this year is Danny. Singing ability is what this show is supposed to be about. Singing talet is what this guy has. He should be the next American Idol, lets not let him fall by the wayside because of one bad song. This guy has NEVER been in the bottom three, and should not be there this week either. Allison was good last night and i agree with Simon, the duet with Adam probally pushed her into next week. Kris I beleive was the weakest link last night and will probally go home. Allison will exit next week leaving Danny and Adam in the final week. MY VOTE IS FOR DANNY!!!!!

Migraine | 5/6/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Can you imagine watching Adam in a concert for 2 hours? You’ll definitely get a migraine!

Stop shrieking .. its so annoying! I feel like I’m watching Phantom of the Opera everytime he’d sing .. and Phantom is already sooo PASSE!

Allison on the other hand has the voice .. and the soul .. given the proper encouragement (and minus the negative opinions of Simon, which is obviously affecting her Spirit) she’ll go a long way.

Chris and Gokey .. too amateur ..

amber | 5/6/2009, 12:25 pm EST

i’m a huge fan of queen, and at times i think adam has a little freddie going for him. that doesn’t make up for the dramatics and faces and tongue. it doesn’t make up for the screeching and sounding the EXACT SAME IN EVERY SONG.

i love me some danny. i can’t help it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that’s mine. i also love allison. i like kris okay, too, but think that he’s run his course.

for those of you that state that anyone that doesn’t like adam is a homophobe, all i have to say is…really? pretty sure i’m not. and i still don’t like hearing him. it is possible, you know.

rob | 5/6/2009, 12:29 pm EST

You are a complete chump if you think Danny Hokey will actually outsell Adam Lambert..would anyone actually pay any money to see Hokey sing? He really did a number on “Dream On”..Im just shocked one of the judges actually had the NERVE to say something bad about it! Hokey has been getting praise every week no matter how stinky and totally b-o-r-i-n-g he has been
I believe Fox being the Christian network has had something to do with the constant praise being heaped on Hokey.

Michelle | 5/6/2009, 12:30 pm EST

Last night for Adam was awesome .Adam
Rock the house last night with led zepplin whole lotta love and duet with Allison.he is the best singer out there .no one cannot top Adams talent.

Christiano | 5/6/2009, 12:30 pm EST

You can’t be effeminate and sing “Whole Lotta Love.” Plant made that song so awesome because he sounded like he could and would fuck you. He also sounded, somewhat legitimately, like he was in the throes of passion. You believed Plant. I don’t know or care if Adam is gay, but do know that you need balls, before a great range, to do justice to that tune. The key to Whole Lotta Love’s greatness is the raw grit…it’s not about flashy runs and high notes. It’s not even a hard song to sing, speaking of notes and range, but if you don’t have the sexuality and spirit…it’s just as well a muzak version.

Someone said Adam might do better with Skid Row…yeah, but even that might have too much heart for his style. I’m thinking more along the lines of Poison or maybe Bang Tango.

Dan the Man | 5/6/2009, 12:32 pm EST

I love Danny Gokey! I think he’s fantastic and would actually buy his cd. Can’t wait for the tour to come here!

Mr. Bill | 5/6/2009, 12:41 pm EST

First, I’m an older guy who grew up on Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and early R&R of the 50’s and 60’s. Couldn’t really get into the heavy metal Woodstock stuff of the 70’s and 80’s.
With that as background you’d think that Adam and Allison would be anything but great for me. However, like many other posters have mentioned, they simply “ROCK!!!”

Adam has such a range in his vocals that it is amazing. OK, he’s gay and wears make-up. BFD!!
Get over it. I (personally) don’t care about that because if he (Adam) makes it (and he will…), how will you ever know on a CD? And, if you buy a DVD of his, you’ll already know what you’re getting, right?? The voice is the only issue for vocals.

Ditto, Allison. To those who don’t like the red hair, again I say BFD. Most rock chicks (or big-time stars) have a “trademark look” as in Elvis’ pompadour hair and hip wiggle (really hot “in the day”)or Kiss’ face make-up.

Allison’s hair IS her trademark look and BTW, she is HOT!! A one trick pony, as some have said??? Not at all. That lady has a style; all her own and with a voice that rocks!!

Maybe a two-way tie: Allison and Adam??? What a way to end the season.

BTW – my take on Kris and Danny? Very bland and as Simon would say, “forgettable,” especially after last night’s performances.

Just my 2 cents worth. Bye 4 now!

Lo Butler | 5/6/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Adam is phenominal, and easily the best contestant American Idol has ever had. Not only is he vocally talented, but he is an entertainer. I would be so bored this year with out him. At least he brings something new to the table each week. I enjoy watching him sing and he is beyond all of the contestants by a mile!

Anonymous | 5/6/2009, 12:51 pm EST

Are you kidding about Adam??? That was so incredibly predictacle (Zeppelin) and we already know he can do that…he does it every week!!!

gb | 5/6/2009, 12:55 pm EST

What an incredible group of idols this year! I think they are all very talented and entertaining in their own way…Time will tell how their futures play out and no matter who wins they all have the chance for incredible careers…it now will come down to how hard they want to work and for how long. We have all seen great performers flame up and fizzle out. Hope they all give us many years of future entertainment!

MES | 5/6/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Allison is the real deal, soulful voice with an underground persona. Adam may be musically gifted but he is painfully karaoke to watch!! His moves are spam–straight from a can.

pleazurs | 5/6/2009, 12:58 pm EST

If people would just watch these performances and look away, you would see these contestants, except for Adam, will not sell records. Ive downloaded from itunes all of Adams stuff and it is unbelievable! This competition is a joke! Its a singing talent competition and the true talent is too obvious, so they have had to drama this crap up! Adam may not be everyones taste, but he will be the one to make the charts! Period!

Connecticut | 5/6/2009, 1:00 pm EST

Talent has nothing to do with a person’s sexuality. I don’t believe the public gives a damn about his sexual preference. Adam is very talented, but very predictable. Throughout the show all the contestants try other gneres, Adam simply can’t sing anything else. Regardless of what your feelings are for the other contestants, they step up to the plate and deliver, Adam is stuck in a rut. The judges are afraid to offend Adam lest they come off homophobic. The top 4 are all great, give them their due, Adam shouldn’t overshadow them,so stop putting down such great talent… in the long run…the other 3 will have better and more successful careers
because they are more diverse.

Kassilda | 5/6/2009, 1:01 pm EST

Adam, Adam, Adam!!!He reminds of Elvis before his weight gain, Elvis had a perfect profile (face),those eyes, he looks like Elvis, although diferent style of singing…My vote is for Adam…

ktb | 5/6/2009, 1:03 pm EST

I think that Adam does have basically the same note in every song he does. He’s not as original as people think. So he’s good at Rock, but did he so great thruout this competition? I don’t think so. The only thing he gets right every time is that stupid note he sings with his mouth wide open and his tongue hanging out. I haven’t liked Adam from the start. Not because of anything he does or wears I just don’t like his voice.
I think he should be kicked out of the show but the judges will never let that happen. The will make sure Adam wins.

I love Gokey. He has done great with all the different genres but we all know he not a rock star.

I think the judges are too hard on Chris. He has heart and he puts it into his music.

You don’t have to agree with me, this is just my opion.

AlAd | 5/6/2009, 1:13 pm EST

Just wanted to say that A and A did a fantastic job, individually and together. They have been consistenly good, and exude natural talent.

Danny Donkey was terrible, he murdered a cat while murdering an amazing song. Thats two life sentences right there.
He just has a compelling back story, a likeable (but smug) look and an interesting rasp. Still, I have actually found myself moving from a Danny supporter at the start to a Donkey disliker by now. Its time for him to go.

Kris is the only one I dont really have an opinion on eitherway. He is a cool likeable dude with some talent, very middle of the road imo.

Hope the public makes the right choice and sends Danny home.

emmygirl | 5/6/2009, 1:15 pm EST

american idol is a singing competition. who has the best singing voice? adam. he is a performer and a major talent. he is confident and performs with style and ease. this is what being a performer is about. the high notes are effortless and only add to his style. anyone who feels the need to judge him on his lifestyle, wardrobe or whatever is being ignorant and isn’t looking at the talent itself. i adore the other contestants for different reasons but this is a competition. adam is there to win and will.

gb | 5/6/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Gokey did NOT hit it out of the park last nite, but I think that when he gets it right…like when he did Raschal Flatts…he was just as good as Adam…and I grew up on Zepplin..saw them in concert 3 times…now those were the DAYS!

Clone | 5/6/2009, 1:17 pm EST

Adam Lambert from my TV sang as though the treble was on high and no bass was present. He did not sing a Zep song, he sang just like he always does… Screaming, high pitched, and without respect. He has too go!!!

Alison is the only talent left!!!

Betsy | 5/6/2009, 1:21 pm EST

It seems some folks here who call Adam screechy have forgotten his performances of “Mad World,” “Tracks of My Tears” and “If I Can’t Have You.” And yes, he might be overly expressive, but he (as well they all) has to perform for a big live audience. My guess is, being a theatre guy, he performs to even the back row.

VT--JERSEY GIRL | 5/6/2009, 1:26 pm EST

It’s awsome to have some one like Adam who is by far the most talented performer this season. WAY to go with Whole Lotta Love, don’t think I ever could hear it any better than with Adam. Ya gotta just come down to this, HE IS IN A LEAGUE ALL HIS OWN! As for the talent this season, I beleive that it has been one of the best as a whole. Adam is hey just tooo cool, hot ahh whatever!

DiverdownJohnny | 5/6/2009, 1:32 pm EST

I was pulling for Allison to take the show. Joplin was a good choice. However, the song was a bit on the old side. How bout Pat Benatar? “You better run”. This song she would have stole the show. Adam was the best, but he sang whole lotta love like a wuss, and that is a man swagger song. Kris did better than I thought he would. Where was Slash when Danny was rehearsing? It was obvious in the rehearsal clip that Danny should not do “Dream on”. Way to go Slash! Steve Perry or even David lee Roth would have provided better advice.

realeyes | 5/6/2009, 1:33 pm EST

I am glued when Adam takes the stage, can’t even help myself! He’s so entertaining, and that is what a star is. I bet all of you can’t help but stare when he takes the stage, even if ya hate him. He’s drop dead gorgeous, the camera loves his face and his voice is so original and raw. He oozes sexual confidence on stage and this is what really does it for so many of us, it’s very Elvis. Say what you want, but you can’t deny his star power, nor his affect on the audience and that is why he will win, and continue on to a very successful career. God Adam, you rock my world. Love your pants…;P

Lucy James | 5/6/2009, 1:33 pm EST

I think we all learned a big lesson last night: NEVER let Adam sing first!

OMG, he simply blew the competition AWAY last night! None of the others (even Allison) even came close, IMHO.

Kris and Danny were both TERRIBLE – in their duet and solo performances.

Kris should DEFINITELY go home – he has always been hugely overrated by the judges and fans, IMO. Sure, he’s cute and has a boy-next-door appeal but, he has as much personality and charisma as my toenail.

BTW, is it just me or was Slash a TERRIBLE mentor choice?? He did not give ONE piece of good or constructive advice to any of the contestants, IMO.

Teresa | 5/6/2009, 1:43 pm EST

Adam brings the house down EVERY single performance! America has tuned into AI because of Adam Lambert. He WILL be a superstar! About that there is no doubt.

gb | 5/6/2009, 1:47 pm EST

I must agree that Adam has star power…can’t imagine the show without him …and for that alone he should win….take any of the others away and it doesn’t really matter, but take Adam out of the mix and it would be ho hum, over and out….but for me the raw talent award should go to Allison, but the star power isn’t there for her yet…also I like watching the judges run for their seats after their smoke breaks!…what a great job!

Elle | 5/6/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Most original, versatile, memorable performances – Adam

Most accolades from judges, resident and guest – Adam

Greatest vocal range – Adam

NO DOUBT IN MY MIND…ADAM SHOULD WIN, EVEN MY 76 YEAR MOM IS A BIG ADAM FAN…

rjs | 5/6/2009, 1:58 pm EST

WHen Adam hit the bottom three, I thought the judges were going to puke on the desk!!! I didn’t know if the save would have still been available had it not already been used but even Randy turned Green!

Mississippi K | 5/6/2009, 1:58 pm EST

I absolutely love just about everything Adam sings, but I have been puzzled by how polarized people are about him. It is certainly love or hate.

I am starting to think that maybe people actually hear Adam differently. He has a high voice for a male vocalist (contratenor) and his upper range appears to be close to the amazing Freddie Mercury. Perhaps there are some people who just can’t hear it properly.

Question to the Adam detractors: Do you also think that Freddie Mercury screamed, was shrill, induced migraines, etc.?

music worker | 5/6/2009, 2:04 pm EST

I have to say danny is very poor and foolish last night and shows his musical talent is nearly zero. For me a music worker,I feel very horrible to appear this type singer.Danny needs go home, he has no true heart for art.

artfan | 5/6/2009, 2:14 pm EST

Music is not a box. Open your eyes and arms to the whole musical sky.Adam is unique and is himself. He can intrepidly create new different original music without compromise, which is true musician.

In addition to the talent, Adam is a truly nice young man. (and his sexual orientation is his business) He listens to the judges comments with humilty when criticized and is thanks them for their comments. As much as he obviously wants to win, he appears to really care about the other contestants and always acknowledges the fans…he was so sweet with Allison last night!

I’m a 43 year-old Rock drummer, and though you can lambast my comment, I don’t give a care. Adam is a total poser, not a “rock god”. He lacks authenticity. He’s a made-up theater singer. Before you invoke Kiss, or hair bands such as Cinderella, let me remind you, they are not in rock’s pantheon of real rockers. Allison and Kris have authenticity… Allison for rock, and Kris for singer/songwriter style folk/pop.

kat | 5/6/2009, 3:13 pm EST

Slash KNEW that Gokey was going down. He had that smirk on his face when he said that the song could go either way. Gokey was so smug and sure that he could do an Adam that he fell flat on his face. Good for Slash for letting him :-)

JumpStartMyHeart | 5/6/2009, 3:31 pm EST

I don’t know if anyone knows who Michael Sweet is, but I often imagine Adam doing a rendition of “The Writing’s on the Wall” by Stryper. I know is not everyone’s “cup-of-tea” but it would be amazing to hear him sing that song!! Last night made it clear that Adam has got what it takes!!
I completely disagree with some of the statements that suggest that each song that Adam has done has sounded the same!! Totally not true!! He has done quite a few ballads that did not include any of his high notes that he has done in some of his faster and harder songs!!
I have been very impressed with what everything he has peformed!!
If I was in America, I would vote for Adam at least 1000 times!! haha Go Adam!!!!!!! You have this Canadian’s undivided support! All the way to finish babe!! mmmmuuuuaaahhhh :)

RealRockGuitarist | 5/6/2009, 3:31 pm EST

In reply to KMoon’s comment (5/6/2009, 2:54 pm EST) about Adam being a poser and you being a a 43 year-old Rock drummer, so what? Does that make you the leading rock expert? No it does not! Adam’s genuine which is why he’ll win, you on the other hand have no originality of your own much less to spot real talent if you think as you do.

The big Dipper | 5/6/2009, 3:31 pm EST

Bring back Jorge Nunez! Now that boy rocked!

Laura | 5/6/2009, 3:54 pm EST

Allison – we wanna hear you sing “Somebody to Love” (Jefferson Airplane) in the finals!

Allison was hot hot hot last night – great vocals, strong stage presence and she ROCKED that duet with Adam – loved it baby!!!

KMoon | 5/6/2009, 4:03 pm EST

With regard to “RealRockGuitarist’s” comment, I just indicated my age and profession to indicate that I’ve had a lifelong association with rock, and indicated my opinion (if that holds any credence). If you disagree, fine. He’s still a poser, and I almost puked when Kara called him a “rock god”. He’s irritating in my not so humble opinion.

Ok here goes.... | 5/6/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Can Adam Lambert write song lyrics? We may never know, but I’m willing to bet that he’s gonna get one of those mp3’s and a writing assignment from Slash. For Velvet Revolver, they need a guy who can write song lyrics, sing his ass off, not be a junkie or a dick and know who’s band it is. We know he has 3 out of the 4. I’m pretty sure American Idol drug tests now, especially after a couple of alums have ended up with Dr. Drew. From all accounts, he seems to be a pretty good guy. But can he write lyrics? Because the other 4 can’t, which is why Bach didn’t get hired 7 years ago.

Oh, and kmoon? | 5/6/2009, 4:21 pm EST

Just tell me why Adam is a poser? Is it because he tried out for American idol after struggling in Hollywood for several years? Kind of tough to make it as an unknown these days when record companies aren’t giving singers like him a shot. Do you really blame him for doing what it takes to get noticed?

Is he a poser because he may be gay? Well, that would make Rob Halford a poser too.

Is he a poser because he’s done theater? Well, what about Joann Jett? Are you gonna call ANY member of the Runaways a poser?

Idiot.

MakeMyDay | 5/6/2009, 4:33 pm EST

Adam sounded terrible. Allison rocks and has a killer voice. Kris is muti talented but… Danny go blues but stay away from harder music please.

Note: While the AI judges already have decided who they love, THIS IS A MUSIC COMPETITION not an EMO GLAM FEST

The big Dipper | 5/6/2009, 4:35 pm EST

KMoon, Adam is not a poser as you insist, he pulls the audience in by giving the song a visual interpretation. And lets be honest, the so called rock gods of the 70’s and 80’s had horrible stage presence. Even Robert Plant looked uncomfortable on stage. The exceptions, Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, and Tom Jones. Everbody else, a deer in the headlights.

JR | 5/6/2009, 4:46 pm EST

Yeah Adam is definitely not in NIN league. He is about 7 levels higher than those deadbeats.

eldora | 5/6/2009, 5:27 pm EST

No one will be as great as the charismatic Taylor Hicks. What an artist and performer. He has a very successful career since winnig : a mostly sold out tour of his own, a Broadway show and now touring the country with Grease. Love Taylor – best idol yet!

SlashnIdol | 5/6/2009, 6:04 pm EST

I was really surprised that Slash was on American Idol. He had a nice run in GNR. It’s time to let the past be the past.

VR was his last chance for people to take him seriously, and that is over. It ended in the same way as GNR with the band and the singer having totally different stories as to why it did not work out.

He seems like a cool guy, but he was just not able to adapt in the slightest way toward a newer sound. Maybe he can work with different artists or do studio work. He could definitely contribute to music in that way.

Marie | 5/6/2009, 6:05 pm EST

Allison Iraheta rocked the house last night with Cry Baby. She looked beauuuuuuutiful and she killed the stage. I want to see more!!! I want to see more!!!! I want to see more!!! Allison in the final. You go girlfriend with your raspy, sexy, killer voice.

devil | 5/6/2009, 6:14 pm EST

I saw American Ido last night. I think Adam and Allison should be the top 2. Danny screamed his head off last night. I think he should leave.

ScottHiLand | 5/6/2009, 8:28 pm EST

The only reason Slash was there was to nail Allison and beg Adam to be VR’s new singer…

ameliekat | 5/6/2009, 8:28 pm EST

i don’t understand how people can say that adam sounds the same every week. okay, so his main genre of choice is rock. but what about tracks of my tears? mad world? they sounded nothing like last night’s performance. neither did born to be wild. i just don’t get it.

i also don’t understand how people turn around and say the other 3 are way more diverse. out of those, allison can sing more very different songs, as evidenced by last week’s performance.

kris allen has the same sound every week. i love this guy. i really like him, and i hope he gets thru this week, but he does kinda have the same sound. i loved his “come together”, and i understand to some extent what the judges are talking about. he’s not the most marketable contestant they’ve had. he’s just kinda mellow (and really good).

danny: this guy sounds exactly the same except for this week and last week. i liked him at first, but then he got boring. last week was pretty good, sounded more like a real singer. this week, i can’t say it was a complete abomination, but he should NOT have chosen that song unless he knew full well he could do it. massive failure. the part that actually made me cringe and want to vomit was not the feline sacrifice at the end. and wth is he doing trying to eye-rape the camera?? stop trying to copy the other contestants. it just doesn’t work for him.

so, in conclusion, adam can sing (well) more genres than any other contestant left

alce dodson | 5/6/2009, 9:44 pm EST

Adam is perfect. If he doesn’t win this something is wrong. Gokey sounds like a screaming cat. Allison needs to go with her egotistic attitude and Kris, oh well.

pretty in pink | 5/6/2009, 10:27 pm EST

Please vote for adam coz he’s really a great singer and also has the charisma! Let he and kris allen be in the finale because kris can also sing and also has the charisma…
Go go go for both of them but hopefuly adam will win! pls vote for adam pleeeeaaasssee!!!!! he is really desrving! i cnt wait for rock week’s results!

MR | 5/6/2009, 10:36 pm EST

I did what someone else did, which is burn all of Lambert’s songs onto a DVD so I could watch them all in sequence. Amazing. The variety of performances is truly amazing. I think he peaked with Mad World. I didn’t like the last two weeks as much.

What I have noticed the last couple of weeks is Adam’s smile after finishing the song isn’t as natural as before. It is kind of Stepford Wife. I think he is either feeling the pressure, either from the adulation or possibly hate, that it is getting to him a little bit. Remember what happened to David Cook last year, where he was hospitalized toward the end of the season with a racing heart.

I want to see him looking like he did after singing Mad World. Once he gets beyond the AI microscope, I think he will really relax and grow.

kimberly sue | 5/6/2009, 11:17 pm EST

was allison desrving to be booted out for this wik? well, i can say danny should have been the out voted out because he showed that he cant sing that good..but hey look at the brightside, adam n allison are from LA..so without allison people from LA will be voting for adam! hope adam n kris for the finale coz danny really has to go!

asdf | 5/7/2009, 1:59 am EST

why do people hate on danny so much?!
it was just one friggin performance, im such a gokey fan but yeah i can still admit that scream last night was hell.
but i hope danny wins because idk, when adam sings he doesnt really seem to have a connection with anyone. sure he can hit really high and whatever, but idkk..

hunter | 5/7/2009, 5:46 am EST

adam has pre-idol songs that i think he wrote himself

he has this roc song called crawl thru the fire which he collaborated with madonna’s guitarist

rockell | 5/7/2009, 8:49 am EST

Did anyone else puke when that Kara douchbag made claim that Adam Lambert’s Led Zeppelin performance puts him into the same league as NIN? Anybody or was it just me…
_______________

Yes, I about did!

Alex | 5/7/2009, 9:43 am EST

People are so damn stupid. Adam is horrendous!!! He sounds the same every week, he cant sing for his life and the judges have lost all credibility. I honestly cannot understand why ANYBODY likes Adam. He murdered Whole Lotta Love. It was so effing painful to watch!

Swine flu | 5/7/2009, 10:20 am EST

Lets talk about No Doubt. I have no doubt that was a horrible performance last night. Gwen looked horrible, out of shape, and couldn’t sing a note. The AI contestants are far superior in singing and performing. A total flop, she needs to retire. You would be foolish to pay $50 to $100 to see that crappy performing. P.S.- Gwen if you are going to do pushups on stage, dont do 4 struggling pushup, do 10 and be done with it.

Country | 5/7/2009, 11:29 am EST

Even Trent can’t sing NIN anymore. They should NOT make that comparison with Adam. I think they are confusing Adams looks (old NIN) to Reznor more then the vocals. Adam has a much higher range and it would be easy for him to sing NIN but I don’t think that is what he is after!

CA | 5/7/2009, 1:26 pm EST

I’m actually old enough to have heard Led Zeppelin play. Adam did more than fine, in my opinion. Slash gave him props and more importantly Led Zeppelin gave Idol permission for that boy to do the song. Speaks volumes to me. Love him or hate him, folks Adam Lambert is on his way.

Emily | 5/7/2009, 2:28 pm EST

Adam can certainly write songs. He has several originals on youtube, right now. I have all of them downloaded onto my computer and listen to them every day. Not all are rock… But check him out in his band “citizen vein”, also really good.

Adam originals on the pop/dance side:

Glamorize
Pop Goes the Camera
Kiss and Tell
Oh My Ra
Gigalo

Rock:

Crawl through Fire
The Circle
Rough Trade
Turning On

Britidol | 5/8/2009, 8:12 pm EST

Adam has sung and entertained with more variety and belief every single week, which is more than can be said of Danny, of whom I cannot recall any of his performances. Danny’s ‘Dream on’ ending made my friend think her hearing aids were about to blow up! He should have gone and not Allison.

Lesleigh | 5/9/2009, 10:35 pm EST

Hey, Caryn/Rolling Stone…I wanna call you on something, here. Just like another commenter stated – WhoTF are you (or I) to dictate to Slash, Jimmy Page or any other musician who THEY want to collaborate with, on their own music?
If Robert Plant wants to remain in that wondrous new re-created life in American “Root” music (with Alison Kraus)..and not go back to touring under the Led Zep banner – that’s HIS choice!
If Page wants to invite other vocalists to perform in Plant’s stead…that is up to THEM.
Same with Slash and Velvet Revolver…or any other band.
We all can be stuck-up RocknRoll purists (meaning our know-it-all noses stuck UP our proverbial asses)…but what it comes down to is TALENT.
In the free world: Talent=Art and Art=Truth.
Every artist is free to choose what paint/palette he or she wants to paint their canvas with.
That is THEIR Truth.
Musicians have the right to choose what/who represents their envisioned artistic endeavors…and, then, it is up to us as to buy or not buy their artwork/product.
But for Rolling Stone – or any other publication to issue an opinionated “edict” as to what “Should” or “Should NOT” be done by an artist is just plain wrong.

Obviously, Plant & Page decided that this incredibly talented-guy (Lambert) had the requisite vocal chops…and deserved to perform one of their all-time great songs on AI.
He pulled it off in an amazing fashion (which, btw, didn’t even come CLOSE, vocally, to the version Lambert recorded in a studio for iTunes – which is OFF THE SCALE SCORCHING HOT!)…and, literally, blew the door off of Primetime Broadcast Television.
(Daughtry,Bice stuck their RocknRoll toes into that same AI door, David Cook nimbly slipped through sideways through it)…and Adam Lambert has, now, simply placed a wired pile of dynamite & is about to put a HOLE in the side of the commercial mega-structure that is AI !
So, again…when he wins American Idol (and he WILL win it, there is no doubt)- he should be able to ascend to whatever gig is offered to him or create music of his own choosing – without us pre-judging the “correctness” of his perceived art pairings. So when he breaks free, someday, of Fremantle/19 Entertainment’s vice-like legal/creative grip – WHO has the right to say who he should or should not perform with? Certainly NOT me, you..or ANYONE but the artists, themselves.

LeChatz | 5/10/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Kris did a great job on Tuesday night and definitely deserved to make the Top 3. All the media seems to forget him because of Allison’s elimination and Danny’s bad ending note. It’s interesting how they only see Adam.

The Beatles were considered rock. Kris covered Come Together extraordinarily well. But more than that, Kris has been stepping up each week, has been consistently great each week and NEVER had one performance than can be deemed bad or horrific. He’s had weeks that were better than others (who hasn’t).

I love Allison. I think she should have won the whole thing. I would have loved a Kris/Allison finale. However, I am so sick of not hearing kudos for Kris Allen, who absolutely, without a doubt, deserves to be where he is on this manipulated contrived show.

Allison is gone. It’s a shame. She is fabulous. But get over it already and give the other underdog, the other singer who was thrown under the bus, the kudos he deserves.

I agree!! From the start of this season’s AI, I’ve been doing double-takes every time Adam performs because there are moments when I could swear I’m looking at Elvis up there. I haven’t seen anyone else make the comparison, but it’s so obvious to me.

Maybe Elvis decided to come back and give us what we want, like he did before. I love Adam, and to compare him with Elvis is not to in any way detract from his unique style as a performer or to suggest that his artistic style isn’t HIS. It is to say he’s got the same kind of talent, stage presence, charisma, and electricity that Elvis had. He channels the same gestalt.

It’s just as Randy J. said, he’s “in the star zone”.

I love forward to much more from him in the years ahead.

Well, the comments here are all over the place. Adam was the best, Adam sucks. Allison was too ugly, Allison has no personality. Wrong song choice, great song choice. And for cryin’ out loud, their hair looked bad. Guess that’s why there are comment sections, so I’m gonna give mine.
Adam has a great sense of the art of entertainment. He has a great set of pipes, and knows how to use them. He is multifaceted, as well as original….and a great personality!
Allison is devine! She has the quirky enthusiasm of a normal teenager, but has a mature understanding of music. She can connect with any artist, at any time, and the artist is better for it. She has a musician’s soul and grit, and will only become more endowed with knowledge as she ages. She is a good kid from a good background, who actually knows what she wants to accomplish in life. She’s not a beautiful pre-packaged fembot (I believe we’ve got enuff of those empty-headed wanna-be’s). She is cute to the millionth degree, with the happy, funny personality to match! Allison is someone who people want to be around. We all know people like that, that we want good things to happen to. Personally, I couldn’t take my eyes off of her!
Her and Adam will both achieve just what they want to achieve. They are both blessed with talent beyond compare, and know just what they want to do with it. They are the two that will be remembered for the most significant performances this year. Can you imagine AI8 without either one?

dixie13 | 5/31/2009, 2:19 pm EST

Allison’s hair does look cheap.
change it please its’ all you notice when she is singing and my brain keeps saying what is she thinking?

terie D. | 6/27/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Just a comment………if ADAM LAMBERT was so unnecessary to AI & should have been voted off as some of you “experts” said, then WHY do you think AI always seemed to put his performance at the END of the show? RATINGS, that’s WHY!!! After HE performed there was NOONE ELSE to watch…….IMO, that is.
