Morello’s Street Sweeper Social Club Get Their Rage On at NY Gig

With Rage Against the Machine back on ice for the time being, it was only a matter of time before Tom Morello would have to plug back in and, well, rage a little. As the Nightwatchman, he gets to dabble in Woody Guthrie-inspired acoustic tunes, but the siren song of electric guitars and big riffs must be too strong to avoid.

As a warm-up for their opening slot on the impending Jane’s Addiction/Nine Inch Nails tour — which kicks off Friday in Florida (Rolling Stone will have a full report) — Morello’s new band, Street Sweeper Social Club, played a surprise gig opening for the Roots last night at New York’s Highline Ballroom, engaging a sold-out crowd that was there more to dance than to mosh. Morello and crew — featuring frontman Boots Riley of Oakland hip-hop act the Coup — took the stage in matching black coats with red trim and shades and kicked into the staccato, guitar-heavy “Fight! Smash! Win!,” complete with some shredding from Morello without his trademark effects array.

But he still had plenty of tricks up his sleeve, including a guitar solo on “Somewhere in the World It’s Midnight” that consisted of him rapid-fire strumming his guitar’s G string while de-tuning it to change notes instead of by fretting. He also pulled out the technique that might be as synonymous with his name as finger-tapping is with Eddie Van Halen, going into a carefully-orchestrated toggle-switch frenzy to open “100 Little Curses.” The biggest gasp of recognition came when the band hit the chorus on its cover of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” substituting massive power chords and crashing drums instead of the original track’s gunshots, making the song as hard-edged as its lyrics.

Street Sweeper Social Club might finally answer the question, “What if you actually had a really good rapper in a hard rock band?” instead of merely a capable one, as Riley’s smooth delivery keeps things from being meatheaded, but he can still use it to build the energy in the room when he needs to; multiple songs ended with vocal crescendos not dissimilar from Rage’s “Killing in the Name” before blowing up into power-riffing fury. In fact, the overall Rage-ness of some of the tunes is maybe enough to make one wonder if these songs were originally bound for the RATM reunion album that was rumored last year and never emerged, but Riley is no Zack de la Rocha imitator, and the band is its own foot-stomping, teeth-gnashing beast.

Set list:

“Fight! Smash! Win!”
“Somewhere in the World It’s Midnight”
“Paper Planes”
“100 Little Curses”
“Promenade”
“The Squeeze”
“Nobody Moves (Til We Say Go)”

I really have a problem with this statement (maybe someone can clarify if I misread it): “Street Sweeper Social Club might finally answer the question, “What if you actually had a really good rapper in a hard rock band?” instead of merely a capable one.”

As much as I know Boots is a great rapper, I think the author of this piece is undervaluing the skill of Zack de la Rocha by only calling him a mere capable rapper. I think many rappers including Boots (and Tom Morello for that matter) would severely disagree with the author. I have not seen a rapper who really crafts his lyrics like Zack does. He crafts the words like a poet who works for days perfecting their work. I know plenty of rappers in mainstream who write poorly because they write them in the matter of minutes only focusing on baby rhymes as opposed to content.

What Eon said.

I don’t see any members of this band – powerful and innovative on its own – eager to compare themselves with any other band, past or present. Why dredge up rapper comparisons, Chris?

The gig last night was sublime (and the between-sets Tom/Roots jam boosted the night into local legend).

Also, wondering if the “meatheaded” he’s referring to are Zack’s lyrics?

dude | 5/6/2009, 8:44 pm EST

yeah, I don’t think the author has ever even gotten past Rage’s singles

Neon | 5/6/2009, 9:18 pm EST

That’s what Rage fans do: they cling on to the glory days, even though they’re long gone. Get over it dude!

I like Tom Morellos Acoustic stuff but Im not too big on his voice.
For RATM type music I’ve been listening to bands like Fist of Soul.

Street Sweeper features multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and screenwriter of the forthcoming Freeloaders, Dave Gibbs, on bass. Did that make sense?

Tom Morello jumped the shark when he went glam with Chris Cornhole. Who in their right mind would take any of his “serious” projects seriously. He has two career options at this point. A.) Play guitar for Bret Micheals. B.) Kiss Zack’s ass. The author of this article is trying to score some points at RS by trying to come off hip and with it. Tom Morello’s protest gig sounds like demos posted by kids on YouTube. Morello is going to spend the rest of his life trying to recover from the cougar band Audioslave. You can tell the name was probably his idea… wow what a rad name man… Audioslave… then he thinks to himself… what should we write? I know songs for Milfs and Cougars! Perfect.

Did anyone hear the Band Mad Orchid?
They were the first band of the night that opened for Street Sweeper Social Club at Kenny’s

Controversial statements aside about RATM, I saw the Street Sweeper Social Club last night during the NIN/JA tour in ATL. In my opinion SSSC stole the show for me. NIN and JA came out and played their songs, but the SSSC came out with something to prove and prove they did. It was a high energy show and Morello was at his best. Honestly I have no idea of who Boots Riley is or his past but he put on a hell of a show as well. Needless to say they sold me their new album after last night’s performance. It is unfair to compare RATM with the SSSC, yet the comparison is inevitable, as you can see. Rather than comparing the strengths and weaknesses of the bands, give SSSC a listen and see for yourself that this is a stand-alone band. And for the record, they blow One Day as a Lion out of the water.

Thank you.

How about Zebrahead? Ali Tabatabaee is a great rapper and I think Zebrahead is way underrated. They are an excellent band.

I saw Street Sweeper last night in Atlanta. They rocked. They had a good message and delivered it well. The front man was a good blend of the “rap” style and Morello’s more “traditional” RATM. It was a good blend. They didn’t steal the show as someone suggested, but they were a good additon. It was painfully obvious however, that the members of Jane’s Addiciton are getting old! Trent Reznor (NIN) is also getting old but had indicated that he will be moving on to other projects and therefore played many things you don’t normally hear at a NIN show.

So Tommy and anyone else…what in the world are you doing to contribute to society? When you reach the golden years what are you going to be able to say about the difference you made in anyone’s life?

Alan | 5/12/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Really, you are only as good as your last record…what has RAtm done lately….Nothing.

i was there | 5/13/2009, 4:42 pm EST

Rage comparisons are pointless, and Audioslave is over.

SSSC kicked ass in Atlanta on the NINJA2009 tour last Sunday. I was in the pit, and it was a privilege to see and hear Morello and the guys tear it up. I’ll be checking out that album for sure.

raag | 5/25/2009, 11:28 pm EST

zack’s not the best lyricist [qwellll motherfucker] but his delivery and presence are fucking awesome.

Paul | 6/1/2009, 1:20 am EST

Terrific band!!!!. Opened for NIN and Janes Addiction last night in Detroit. I thoroughly enjoyed them, bought their tee-shirt and am awating their debut album in a couple weeks. Great mix of hip hop and metal. Tight playing as well. Great job guys…keep it up!!!

walkman666 | 6/10/2009, 6:32 pm EST

I saw SSSC at jones beach opening for NINJA Sunday night, and they rocked so hard. Morello is just a very, very strong guitarist, and this band has rhythm, serious rhythm. Just a very cool RATM type sound, loved it, and will buy the CD when it comes out.

Rage against the machine
Chill Against the machine

Flip sides of the same coin, but each valuable musically.

David G | 11/24/2009, 1:58 am EST

As an mc Zack can’t even swing on a dingleberry off Boot’s nuts. Y’all better check the Coup catalog. I’m saying this appreciating Rage for all they stand/stood for. But this group here…
