Bono Expresses Love of Elvis Presley Via Poem on the BBC

Bono has never kept his admiration of Elvis Presley a secret. U2’s frontman wrote about the King for Rolling Stone’s Immortals issue, calling Elvis “the blueprint for rock & roll.” And U2 even recorded tracks for 1987’s Rattle and Hum at Sun Studios in Memphis, where Elvis first put his silky pipes to tape.

On May 13th, BBC Radio 4 will broadcast a poem Bono has written about the King of Rock & Roll, and according to the Associated Press, the sonnet is a sentimental ode to Presley’s inspirational career, from his small-town Mississippi roots ultimately to his influence on culture the world over. It will be the first time the poem will be heard by a mass audience, after being shelved for 10 years.

While the poem had been published previously, it has never been publicly aired. The BBC is running it as part of its poetry season, and Bono’s heartfelt words — intertwined with Presley’s song “Mystery Train” — will serve as the center piece for a 15-minute broadcast, featuring snippets of Elvis’ music and other material. Throughout the poem, Bono claims, among other things, that “Elvis invented the Beatles,” that “Elvis woke up my heart” and that “Elvis was made by America so America could remake itself.”

“Elvis has millions of fans around the world, and Bono is one of them,” Des Shaw, who recorded the poem at Ten Alps Radio, told the AP, before stating the obvious. “It lay around for a long time with a lot of producers and editors trying to turn it into a soundscape. It couldn’t be a cold reading, so producer Chris O’Shaughnessy put it together. It seems the more you look into Elvis the more you realize exactly what a groundbreaker he was. He was breaking down boundaries.”

You have nothing in common with elvis, bono, stop dreamin

Mr Soia | 5/6/2009, 9:38 pm EST

Bono strikes again…

1. The Beatles were inspired by Buddy Holly & The Crickets, hence the name.

2. Elvis hated The Beatles.
Example: The U.S. vs John Lennon

Me | 5/6/2009, 10:34 pm EST

And who came first Buddy Holly and the Crickets or Elvis? I think Bono is simply and truthfully stating that Elvis layed the groundwork for the Beatles and Rock n Roll. This is not someone’s popular opinion. Whether you like Elvis or his music is irrelevant here.

3 Elvis’s best years were behind him when the Beatles popped up and cleaned the floor with him. As much as they loved him, he returned that love with hatred.

4 After that Patti Smith rejection a few years ago, Bono’s playing it safe and praising the dead.

Elvis’ impact in the music world is undeniable. I grew up listening to him with my parents and bought so many “Best Of” albums for their bday/Christmas presents and it’s always been a dream of mine to visit Graceland. Thanks for posting this. Can’t wait to hear the poem!

Get Over Yourselves | 5/7/2009, 2:41 pm EST

Where does it say that Bono believes he has something in common with Elvis??? He is just showing his admiration in a poem, it is as simple as that. Jeez, so much hatred people…..

BDylan | 5/8/2009, 12:56 am EST

Elvis did not hate the Beatles. He covered many of their songs in the 70’s. He was a bit jealous of them. Jealousy is part of human nature. His best days weren’t behind him when they arrived on the scene. Some of his work in the 1970’s (especially live) is as good if not better than some of his recordings from the 50’s. But, people don’t take Elvis too seriously after 1956. Quite a shame. Just pick up the 68 Comeback Special DVD and That’s The Way It Is concert film to see just how great Elvis was. The Beatles were beyond great too. But, there can be only one King of Rock N Roll and that is Elvis.

weegie | 5/8/2009, 2:46 am EST

Bono is a collosal boob….

Mr. Poopie Pants | 5/8/2009, 7:37 pm EST

What would Bono have to do to be MORE like Elvis? Be a rock star in a world famous band and write hundreds of hit rock songs? And he’s not saying that he’s like Elvis, even though he’s sure as hell a lot more like Elvis than YOU are.

Pooo.

some of you guys are so dumb | 5/8/2009, 8:44 pm EST

wow Mr Soia, you are an idiot. You obviously know nothing about the Beatles if your trying to imply that the beatles didn’t have a huge Elvis influence. Just watch some interviews of Paul and John, or all of them. They all glorified him, dispite his eventual jealousy over them.

GINGER | 5/8/2009, 10:24 pm EST

BONO AND ELVIS ARE TWO SPECIAL SOULS IN DIFFERENT TIME . JEALOUSY IS PART OF HUMAN BEING . WHO I AM TO JUDGE OR CRITIZE ANYONE. AND IF ELVIS DIDN’T LIKE THE BEATLES HE HAD HIS RIGHT TO DO IT .{ALL OF US IN A DETERMINE MOMENTS WE ALSO HATE OR HATED SOMEONE{SO IT ISN’T A BIG DEAL}.ELVIS GOT HIS INSPIRATION BY LISTENING ALLTYPE OF MUSIC. AND HE HAD A POTENT VOICE NOT EVEN THIS FOUR BEATLES HAS THE VOICE THAT ELVIS HAD. JOHN LENNON SAID,” BEFORE ELVIS THERE WAS NOTHING.” { NOT EVEN FRANK SINATRA}.ELVIS REVOLUTIONED AMERICA WITH HIS STYLE ,TALENT, AND VOICE WHICH MADE HIM UNIQUE UNTIL TODAY AS WELL AS BONO{EVEN IF BONO HASN’T HAVE THIS VOICE}. BOTH ON THEIR OWN TIME ARE EXCELLENT ARTIST.SO, PLEASE DON’T BE TALKING STUPIDNESS YOU DON’T KNOW. ELVIS 1954{SUN RECORDS } WHERE WERE THE BEATLES.NOWHERE. BONOP IS A KIND LOVING PERSON AND A BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING .

Elvis had an outstanding voice. He was able to sing very rhythmically and in the quiet songs we can hear that great warmth and emotion. He succeeded to bring the spirit, soul and sex appeal of black music into white rock´n´roll. His huge influence on music history is undeniable and without him all followers including U2 wouldn´t have been possible. If it´s true that Elvis was jealous of The Beatles it´s an understandable human reaction because there´s always a certain competition between artists. Of course everybody wants to be the nr.1.

I´m looking forward to Bono´s poem. His words always express respect and deep admiration of other great artists whether he talks about Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan or Frank Sinatra.

Elvis rules

canigetahellyaa | 5/9/2009, 7:23 pm EST

All the greatest singers and musicians come from america, starting with hank williams, chuck berry and elvis. The soul of america’s music is simple and uncontrived, doesnt need the right haircut, shoes, political affiliation, etc. It all started here no one can deny it.Savvy, eurotrash?

bonojovi | 5/9/2009, 7:27 pm EST

Wow bono looks alot like bernie madoof

Morning in America | 5/11/2009, 10:28 am EST

Bono and U2 had a great song on The Unforgettable Fire album called Elvis Presley and America.
Elvis was great in his heyday. But in the 60’s and 70’s, he became irrelevant. I’d rather listen to Elvis Costello than Elvis Presley.

Jeff | 5/11/2009, 11:14 am EST

Sun Studio is still alive and well, including a new series of live performances airing this fall on PBS affiliates called “Sun Studio Sessions.” Rising stars like Grace Potter and the Nocturnals perform in the historical room on the very floor Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee and others made so much unprecedented music history.

Looking at music from a historical view point. The Greatest Tenor in history was the late John McCormack of Scottish parents born in Ireland. It is very interesting to see the striking similarities between The late Elvis Presley and John McCormack. From Physical appearance, dress sence, stage appearance, presence, traveling America performing on a vast level. Both were with RCA at different times, this i believe in my firm opinion played a major part in the development of Elvis. The managers of RCA records in the time of John McCormack would have been still their in the time of Elvis Presley. And so having the knowledge and successful Music history, travel, performance, sta ge,perfection, attitude to music.95 performances in one year across America. This information would have been introduced to the King.Elvis Presley standing on stage once recited-Without a Song. This was once sung by a great tenor by the name of Richard Crooks. From historical point of viev the late and great Elvis Aaron Presley was influenced by great tenors(masters)such as John McCormack and Richard Crooks.I do hope this information meets with your approval, and i assure you of my best intentions.Kindest regards and much spiritual love from
Michael Terry.- Australia.

To Elvis Presley who ate my heart XOXO. Elvis Presley deserved the best poem.

bryan | 5/22/2009, 11:31 am EST

Elvis changed music, but he didn’t try to. The criticism of his music of the 60’s and 70’s is warranted. However, I believe Elvis took the commercial route during those years, expeciallly the 60’s to expand his audience and prolong his career. I don’t believe he saw himself as a rebel, protester, or revollutionary. He wanted to be an entertainer and he succeeded at it so well his popularity spanned age and ethnic groups. When he sange the music he loved he was at his best. So don’t criticize him for his lapses.
He never knew if rock and roll would last and he wanted to be sure his career would. Elvis was the greatest.

EE090 | 5/28/2009, 5:46 am EST

Well it’s wrong, About Elvis, He never been jealous of beatles or he hated them, and no body can prove it too, both had met with each other.

hadziq | 6/12/2009, 6:18 am EST

Wow Good. thanks

Tania | 8/11/2009, 11:27 am EST

The Beatles themselves rave about Elvis while you suffer a terrible complex about yourself using the beatles as a shield! the beatles were they sqeaky voices sang some until Elvis came back and took his crown since he was in the army not like the Beatles or should I say 4 queens against one King who won hands down ?? Grown up and stop getting your wires crossed the Beatles are still where they are nowhere close to Elvis even dead!!

Eva | 8/11/2009, 11:31 am EST

Elvis hated no one he was a man who loved everyone and respected everyone until they showed themmselves to be dirt. Comparing the Beatles to Elvis is more than a damn joke. A joke that only the British seem to enjoy in fact pure jealousy since in your hearts you always longed for Elvis whom sadly couldnt visit you all due to the colonel. Elvis was and still is way to big for any Beatles who are just that….Beatles!
Stop pickin on Elvis he was worth a million like anyone who will come and who have gone.
Why as Tania says the Beatles were certainly in awe of Elvis ….!

Ginger | 8/11/2009, 11:36 am EST

Elvis will be bigger and was bigger than anyone alive even when dead for so long dont ever forget that!
the Beatles were alive when Elvis was dead and still stood no where close to Elvis. You must be nuts to compare them both. Elvis will outshine anyone even MJ and that speaks for what the beatles were to the world. No One in their right mind gives a freakin damn about the Beatles! Elvis was and always always be the more superior of the whole lot put together.
