“American Idol” ’s Matt Giraud on Winning Over Lady Gaga, Dancing With Paula Abdul

Ousted American Idol hopeful Matt Giraud stopped by the Rolling Stone offices yesterday to chat about the big Save, finding a fan in Lady Gaga and convincing people he’s not in fact Justin Timberlake. Before we learn who the next eliminated singer will be later tonight, here’s Giraud, in his own words:

What would you have sung for Rock Week?
“Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne [laughs]. It would have been funny if I had done that, but I think that I would have done a bluesy version of Lynryd Skynrd’s “Simple Man.”

How did getting saved change your performance in the weeks following?
I was going to do the Bird and the Bee version of “How Deep is Your Love,” which is really slow and really pretty. After, I got saved I was like, “I need to step it up and rock it out.” So I did a little wink wink humor and did “Stayin’ Alive.”

Do you have plans to go back to the piano bar?
Maybe I’ll just slip in there one night, like “Mind if I play one?” I’m excited to go back and see the people that gave me my first real musical job.

How invested in the show before you were on it?
I watched last year and I voted for David Cook 10 times. I thought I was really helping him with those 10 votes. [Laughs].

There were a lot of different things thrown into the mix this year: the Top 36, the Top 13, the Save and the four judges.
With the Top 36, I think it made better TV to see us all duke it out 12 at a time for three spots, but I didn’t like it at all. I loved the new save rule, though. I think they should bring it back every year — it gives a kid another chance and it makes the show more interesting. Having four judges did help me, unless you did badly and had to be told so four times in a row.

What do you think you’re going to sing on tour?
I’m really excited to get up there and own it and to talk to the people that put me through. I’ve tossed around a lot of ideas. I’m definitely thinking about doing “Georgia on My Mind” because a lot of my fans like that from Hollywood Week. I’m thinking about “So Small,” “Part-Time Lover,” and “Stayin’ Alive.”

What was working with Paula like?
You practice your song for the show for two hours, but we rehearsed for 10 with her. She was tough. She was like [Impersonating Paula's voice], “Hey guys, I’m really nice behind the judges table but at dance rehearsal I’m a different person. So, FROM THE TOP!’ ” She kicked my butt.

With people comparing you to Justin Timberlake, do you feel pressure to step up your dancing?
I knew that as soon as I put a hat on and started dancing, everyone would be like “Justin!” It’s white guy with soul, I understand, but don’t really want to do that kind of music at all. If you were to come to my concert in a couple of years, I want to have me on a piano with a band around me. On Idol, I learned what I’m best at. I would love to make a soulful-rock type album — the Fray, Gavin DeGraw, maybe some Alicia Keys; that’s what I want to go for. I want to sit down and write with some people.

Who would you want to work with?
Kara DioGuardi would be cool. I’d love to write with Colbie Caillat or Gavin DeGraw or Ben Folds. Lady Gaga told me she was sad I didn’t make it through and that she couldn’t wait to hear my first album.

What’s on your iPod?
I have everything on there. One Republic, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, a lot of gospel music. I have a lot of Disney music on my iPod; I think I have the Pinocchio soundtrack on there. I actually used to do a Disney bit at the piano bar. In a room full of drunken people, I’d just bust out the Lion King.

Matt’s Who’s Lovin You and Part Time Lover were some of the best Idol performances ever. Also,Hollywood Week’s “White Chocolate” version of I Want You Back (with Kris Allen) was great! Matt would win “American Entertainer” hands down.

SimonCowbell | 5/6/2009, 8:31 pm EST

The only thing Matt was rockin’ was a face full of zits!

tessa | 5/6/2009, 8:34 pm EST

The show wasn’t the same last night without Matt. He would have done a great job with Simple man. I’m looking forward to his own album and solo tour!

Jen | 5/6/2009, 8:42 pm EST

There has been no greater musician on AI than Matt Giraud through all 8 seasons. He is simply amazing and IMO too good for that karaoke show. Can’t wait to see him live and to buy his CD!

I like that this dude has “everything” on his iPod… “One Republic, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, a lot of gospel music. I have a lot of Disney music on my iPod”

Yep, guess that covers the canon of hundreds of years of popular music.

See, Rolling Stone? Articles on people like this are why I stopped subscribing to your magazine.

I love you Matt!
I hope he gets signed.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being one of the top sellers this season.

Annie Reuter | 5/7/2009, 1:16 am EST

Great interview! Definitely never read an article where the artist admitted to having the Pinocchio soundtrack on their iPod — interesting!

Tie | 5/7/2009, 6:23 am EST

Hey Simoncowbell,
I didn’t happen to notice any zits on Matt, but did you happen to notice the size of those craters on Adam’s face? Wow! As long as he keeps the plaster and trowel handy, he should be able to avoid being mistaken by satellites again, as part of the earths terrain.

Louise | 5/7/2009, 9:41 am EST

Matt has amazing musical talent and just lays out who he is. He’s not a rocker, but he’s going to be at the top of the charts in his genre — soulful pop and blues.
About the alleged zits– is Slash so beautiful?? Making great music is not beauty contest.

what was that? | 5/7/2009, 9:50 am EST

what was that big thing growing on his forehead? it wasn’t there at the beginning of the season. that’s why he started wearing hats.

seriously though, this guy wasn’t that great. he’s good just sitting at a piano and singing, but not once he gets out from behind the piano.

does he really think people compare him to justin timberlake becuase he has “soul”? umm, no.. maybe it’s because you dress exactly like him every single week.

ANNE | 5/7/2009, 10:09 am EST

Matt was a true artist. It appears that he had a great personality with a great sense of humor. I am not interested in the show without him in it.

michigan girl | 5/7/2009, 1:20 pm EST

Can’t wait for the tour and see him perform and his CD! I’m anxious to see who he ends up recording with – he has a lot of musicians who like him!

pabby | 5/7/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Matt has serious talent, and I wish him the best. I have no doubt he’ll be successful. I’ve seen and read other interviews with him, as well, and he seems like a fun guy to be around. Oh, and liking a variety of artists and music? That’s a sign of someone who has a passion for music, and is talented enough to appreciate it!

Kathy | 5/7/2009, 10:01 pm EST

I’ve watched every Idol season and haven’t bought a single album from any of ‘em.

I WILL buy Matt’s album.

I love Matt. Can’t wait for his album. I will still watch the show, but my interest in it now that Matt is gone is minimal. I love Matt more than a friend. He is so handsome, cool and modest, etc. Great role model.

He is the man! Yeah Matt! Break up with your girlfriend?

amykd | 5/9/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Simon cowbell is either a male or dumb, or both, becuase no normal, red blooded female is immune to Matt Giraud’s irresistable charm. Judging from his name, he’s obviously a dumb male. Matt Giraud is adorable, sexy, talented and sweet. You name it, he’s got it! The world is his oyster.

Shiloh | 5/10/2009, 3:31 am EST

Glad to hear the style that Matt is planning for his album. I was kind of hoping for that style from Eliot Yamin, but can;t wait for Matt’s cd for sure. I think he would definitely fit into todays pop music.

Martin Scorsese and you need to talk…SOON! I see you as the young Frank Sinatra in the movie about to be produced. Have “your people call his people” or just have Ryan Seacrest connect you!!!
Check out the photos of young Frank! And wear your hat!
