In February 2008, Paula Abdul told Rolling Stone she was working on her first album since 1995’s Head Over Heels when she premiered the video for “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow,” and promised a second new track would drop in June. Nearly a year later, that second single has finally arrived: Abdul appeared on fellow American Idol personality Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS FM radio show in Los Angeles this morning to debut “Here for the Music” and talk about performing the song on tomorrow’s Idol.

“Here for the Music” (check out the track at the Kiis site), a bass-heavy dance track reminiscent of “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow,” was produced by Oliver Lieber, who worked on “Dance” as well as Abdul hits like “Forever Your Girl” and “Opposites Attract.” According to a press release, the song will appear on Abdul’s new album, which is now slated for release on Filament Entertainment Group in the Fall. The single will be up for sale on paulaabdul.com later this month.

Abdul told Seacrest Idol producers invited her to perform on the show, but she was unsure about committing “because timing was of the essence.” “I literally put everything together on Saturday, rehearsed Sunday and press came in to see a rehearsal yesterday,” Abdul said. When pushed by Seacrest to share details about her performance — her first on Idol in her eight years judging the competition — all Abdul would reveal is, “There’s a lot to see in less than three minutes. You’ll see a whole bunch.”

Abdul also remained cryptic on whether or not she’ll return to the show for its ninth season, telling Seacrest, “Ryan, all I can tell you is, ‘Do I ever know what’s going to happen?’ ” while citing “wonderful opportunities” that have come her way. But with less than a month until this season’s winner is crowned, Abdul added she’ll be making her decision in a couple of weeks — meaning viewers should find out at the finale whether the judge lineup will remain the same next year.

She’s a wingnut, but I’d still put it in.

I hope she finally releases a new full album, I have been waiting for one since Head Over Heels and I really hope not all her songs are vocoded. I hope she has a kick ass performance tomorrow,I have a feeling that she knows she is leaving Idol so she´s milking the last episodes in hope of a musical comeback, but Im afraid I think the show producers want her to fail tomorrow night, hence the rushed last minute performance, in sake of press to close the Idol finale with better ratings. I hope Im wrong and that she proves her critics wrong.

Paula has proven once again why she is a judge on the show. It was spectacular. I predict her song to be top of the charts for dance songs this summer. AMAZING. She has won me over as a fan 2 times now!!!! Why did she wait so long????

Confused | 5/6/2009, 10:09 pm EST

Ryan Seacrest kept going on about this being the “first time ever” that Paula took the stage and performed on Idol. But I would swear she did a dance routine (and song?) last season. Am I going crazy — or are they?

whatever | 5/7/2009, 12:26 am EST

If anyone thinks she was singing well you’ve been fooled and the exact audience that they want watching this show, That was a joke! Doesn’t anyone remember when Paula was actually singing she never performed live because she couldn’t SING!!! They even tried to pull her on stage one in season 2 or 3 and she gracefully declined GEE I wonder why? Has Been Go Away, Take Your Meds and Get Off This Show!!!!

Paula is an incredible talented artist. Last year she debut a video in Idol, she did not performed the song so in fact this is the first time she perform on Idol stage. As Britney, the majority of her choreography are so complex that it make it very difficult for the artist to sing life. On the other half, as Britney or Madonna her particular voice timber is what set her apart as an interesting vocalist. She did sing life many songs on her spellbound concert in NJ 1991, after Millie Vanellys’ controversy. So yes, she can sing but she does many more than that. She does not have to be an Alicia Keys or a Byonce to be a great artist, cause many other artist does not dance or choreograph and direct their own routines and we do not evaluate them negatively for that. Let be fair and give the woman her place. She was absolutely stoning on Idol stage Almost as when she started 20 years ago. And the song, wao!! that will definitely be a dance club smash hit. I wanted to dance. Undeniably stellar. Go Paula!!!

The show is a SINGING competition, not a dance competition. Paula’s a dancer. She cannot sing. Gwen showed her how to sing live….no lip syncing there!

bilzbub | 5/7/2009, 1:10 pm EST

i think knowing paula too well from her judging makes it hard to accept her on stage “edgy” persona. i really love paula’s personality and ability to be the wear it on your sleeve emoticon, however because of that i had a hard time with her performance. paula’s message was clear and simple though, here for the music shows what kind of person paula strives to be, and it was good to see her taking advantage of the show like so many countless others have and have a little fun for a change. good for you, paula!

Wow. What would compel Paula to embarrass herself in such a way, and in front of millions? That whole cheerleading/dance routine crap is about as stale as Simon’s old man-bras.

Paula can not sing, even when lipsyncing to a computerized enhancement of her thin, shrill voice. The woman can not sing – period.

I remember the first time I heard her. I had just returned from London and was in the car with a friend. Paula was on the radio and I made a crack about the chipmunks or something, not knowing who she was — I actually thought it was some kind of joke. I’d never heard anything so bad on the radio and hear she was a star. MTV killed the radio star for sure.

I’ve always found it amusing that considering her utter lack of ability she is a judge on a singing show. I wonder how many talented people passed on being a judge before they got to her. Her comments, though usually nice, are rarely insightful or helpful to the contestants. She’s not doing them any favors by gushing over their monumental mediocrity. They must suffer huge disappointment after they’ve been voted off and real life returns.

As for Allison – it’s unbelievable that she got voted off while Gokey and the other completely nondescript, somewhat insipid dude what’s-his-name, survived.

God, I hate myself for watching this crap!

dmac73 | 5/7/2009, 2:03 pm EST

Was like watching a car wreck. You want to look away from the horror but just can’t. Reminiscent of someone’s crazy aunt getting up to sing with the band at a family wedding.

Was she smoking again? | 5/7/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Paula WAS talented wayyyy baccckkk in the day! A) She can’t sing to save her life! B) Worse than her techno amped music was her lip synching skills. She couldn’t even match the beat and words of her own song. I saw her mouthing words when there was only music being played.

The lady is as old as yesterday’s news. She needs to move on and not do anything this foolish that makes her previous talent worthless.

Lip-Syncing | 5/7/2009, 2:16 pm EST

Lip-Syncing at the Super Bowl is one thing.

Lip-Syncing on the set of a live vocal talent competition is another.

Lip-Syncing on the set of a live vocal talent competition WHERE YOU ARE ONE OF THE JUDGES….is so far out of line…it’s despicable!

eekkkkggghhh

jakeinlove | 5/7/2009, 2:30 pm EST

Most of you talking about people who can’t sing wouldn’t know a singer if it slapped you in the face. Paula still has talent.

GadhafyX | 5/7/2009, 2:30 pm EST

C’mon U haters, even I think very little of paula, but she did amazingly yesterday.

amazing | 5/8/2009, 7:01 pm EST

all of you haters make me sick, shes so talented , u cant stand but to diss her! she is like 50 sumthin yrs old and she rocked out! she did flips , kicks , they tossed her around and she danced like crazy.. i was a cheerleader myself and its not easy doin that! shes very talented and when u haters get off ur lazy ass and do what she did, then we’ll have sumthin to talk about!!

John Freida | 5/13/2009, 3:06 am EST

If I was asked to sum up this Paula Abdul release in 2 words, it would be Oh. . dear!

There’s a line in it that say ‘I really didn’t mean to turn you on’ Oh, how I wish I hadn’t turned THAT on! I have tissue stuffed in my ears right now, not to block out the sound, it’s too late for that, the damage has been done. The tissue is to mop up the blood!
I’ve heard wailing cats create better harmonies than she did, they looked a lot more natural too.

Shocking. . chilling. . and what makes it worse is that she’s one quarter of the judging panel on the world’s biggest singing competition. Heaven help us! Why would she do that to us? She doesn’t even know us, why does she hate us that much???

This isn’t a rump shaker, it’s a fist shaker!!! as in “Why??? Why have you forsaken us with this tragedy of a pop record?”

What next? Simon Cowell releasing a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Earthsong”? This really is a very sad time for music.

Ears | 5/16/2009, 10:04 am EST

Never mind the lyrics. In school I was ribbed by a bunch of tone deafs who couldn’t hear what I did in a variety of compositions and judged a musical work on its lyrics alone. Yeah, some have it in that dept. and some don’t. This song grabs me in the same _musical_ way that other (often one-offs) did and still do, again never mind the lyrics. This is very musically pleasing to my ears. Nice one Paula.

Paulafan | 7/9/2009, 1:00 am EST

All you haters suck. Paula is 47 years old and was tossed around and done flips and jumps that none of you could proably think about doing. Also, she did tour. Her tour back in the 90’s was Under My Spell. So, she can sing live. You all just need to back off and get a life.
