News Ticker: Christina Aguilera, Wilco, Clutch and Iron Maiden

  • Christina Aguilera has signed on to make her big screen debut in the upcoming film Burlesque. According to Variety, the singer “will play an ambitious small-town girl with a big voice who finds love, family and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club.” The film will begin shooting later this year. While Xtina has never appeared in a film, she did lend her voice to the animated Shark Tale.

  • Former Wilco member Jay Bennett is suing his old bandmate Jeff Tweedy, claiming Tweedy owes him royalties from Bennett’s seven year tenure in the group plus money from their 2002 documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, the Chicago Tribune reports. Bennett is seeking at least $50,000.
  • Groove-heavy stoner rock mainstays Clutch are wrapping up work on their ninth album, Strange Cousins From the West. The album, produced by the band with the aid of J. Robbins, will arrive on July 7th. The first single and video, “50,000 Unstoppable Watts,” should surface before Memorial Day. The band hits the road with Wino and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster on May 6th.
  • Iron Maiden is suing the comic book Iron and the Maiden because the names are “confusing similar.” According to TMZ, the band wants the comic to stop using the name on all merchandising, plus some cash.

I have been waiting for the official word on this since last month. Finally more to follow since SNL. Wishing Christina all the best.

Tweety | 5/5/2009, 12:47 pm EST

I’d wish RS would stop using TMZ as a source for their crap. Harvey Levin is not Walter Cronkite reliable, y’know.

dude | 5/5/2009, 2:16 pm EST

Jay Bennett needs to fuck off.

Dude Man | 5/5/2009, 9:32 pm EST

Why has the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame not inducted Iron Maiden. Are not half you Rolling Stone idiots running the Hall. Iron Maiden have influenced so many bands and you deny them thier place. Rolling Stone and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can you guys actually listen every once and a while.

TobyTyler | 5/6/2009, 2:29 pm EST

Jay Bennett = Pete Best

Perky | 5/7/2009, 11:39 am EST

If it weren’t for Led Zeppelin…….Clutch would be the greatest hard rock band of all-time.

Clutch | 5/7/2009, 1:02 pm EST

While I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the old-school Transnational Speedway League style of Clutch, I always look forward to their next album. I haven’t had a chance to hear any of the songs yet, but I’m sure it will be a masterpiece!

Jeremy | 5/7/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Clutch deserves a Rolling Stone cover. Best live band out there today, period.

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 11:51 pm EST

Clutch is, by far, the best band RS has mentioned in years. But they do a disservice to the music by labeling it “stoner rock”. What rock isn’t “stoner rock”? Music sounds better when you’re high. They are an unbelievably talented group of musicians who probably have smoked weed, and play to a group of people that have probably, and may still, smoke weed. Music is music. “Stoner rock” is the worst label ever invented.

ninj4 | 5/8/2009, 12:53 am EST

Clutch is an amazing band that surprisingly hasn’t had its big break yet. I’m a nonStoner with military aspirations and I love their music. Further proof “stoner rock” isn’t an accurate discription. A great band, and I’m eagerly awaiting their next album.

Support piratebay | 5/8/2009, 8:32 am EST

I’d first have to say that Stoner Rock is it’s own genre and there are certain bands that pride themselves on being part of that little musical niche. That said, Clutch is a band that not only fits in and is king in that genre but is also much more mainstream that others may know. Their music hs been in commercials and tv shows recently (ask Fox network or watch Sons of Anarchy). Clutch has been rocking for nearly 20 years but I doubt they are not mainstream enough to make the Hall of Fame.

Chuck | 5/8/2009, 11:34 am EST

I certainly don’t include Clutch in the “Stoner Rock” genre. I think it cheapens the genius behind their music. Just plain old Groovy Rock and Roll.

Pro Rock | 5/8/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Clutch made it in a Rolling Stone article? The end of the world must is near! These guys absolutely ROCK and deserve a lot more recognition than they get. It’s got to be a conspiracy that these guys have been kept out of mainstream news for so long. A feature article on this group is long overdue. A cover with them would be framed and hung immediately.

Shmack | 5/8/2009, 3:30 pm EST

I like very, very few mainstream bands. To me they all have the same or similar (way too similar) sounds. To see Clutch (my favorite band ever) go mainstream would be a disaster to me. Sure they deserve it but in order for them to go mainstream they would have to sound mainstream and I dont like most mainstream sounds.

will | 5/9/2009, 6:21 pm EST

clutch is rock and roll period.

adam | 5/10/2009, 8:42 am EST

I agree that “Stoner rock” is a lame name for a genre.

clutch | 5/10/2009, 12:48 pm EST

CLUTCH!- NUFF SAID

Scotty | 5/10/2009, 1:18 pm EST

I have been a faithful Clutch follower since I first heard them back in ‘95. I have seen them over 20 times, in 4 different states, and they still get the shaft. I think people are afraid of Neil’s growl and his honesty, that is why they are not more well known. These guys tour non-stop, meet with their fans after shows, and offer good quality, intelligent music. They are totally down to earth and deserve way more recognition.

Iowaclutchfan | 5/10/2009, 3:36 pm EST

Clutch is way to talented to be called stoner rock. It’s just great groovy rock and roll. I’m seeing them play live in 3 days. I CAN’T WAIT! CLUTCH IS THE BEST MUSICAL ACT IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW.

Crook | 5/10/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Clutch rules!

Nini | 5/10/2009, 6:45 pm EST

Who gives a shit if they are “stoners”. They fuckin’ rock and thats that!!!!

ghettosleds | 5/11/2009, 1:51 am EST

STONER ROCK???? have you ever tried to smoke a doobie at one of their shows? impossable. best live ROCK band ever !!!!!!!!!!!

El Jefe | 5/11/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Lou | 5/11/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Nice to see so many posts about the mighty Clutch. It’s amazing how under-rated they are, given their greatness. Neil Fallon is the Tom Waits (or Captain Beefheart) of riff-rock!

Soapmaker | 5/11/2009, 3:33 pm EST

Sheeple are scared of anything that is real and unfiltered…that’s why Clutch has never been accepted by the “mainstream”. But to those who never compromise…Clutch sets the bar.

Swollen Goat | 5/11/2009, 4:10 pm EST

CLUTCH has been my favorite listen since ‘94 and I agree that they get the shaft from every major music news source. That said, I do still love the small (and cheap) shows and their relentless touring scheduling means you are always only a few weeks away from a CLUTCH show somewhere near you.

The Kraken | 5/11/2009, 8:53 pm EST

I played “Electric Worry” on WPTQ 103-7 The Point here in Bowling Green, KY market. People who had never even heard of them called to request it…they thought it was ZZ Top!!!! They’d call and say, “What’s that new song? It goes ‘bang bang dominoes!’ Is that new ZZ Top?”! I’ve been a fan since ‘94 or ‘5, seen em like 15 times…excellent live show, and excellent dudes!

rabbi | 5/11/2009, 9:19 pm EST

Clutch-buzz on Rolling Stone’s website!? I’m beside myself with glee, yet still shaking my head wondering why it’s taken so effin’ long.

bacon | 5/12/2009, 12:14 am EST

Clutch is in a league all their own, hearing that they are coming out with a new album is badass!!

homer | 5/12/2009, 11:40 am EST

I love Clutch and don’t care if they get press. Some people only know whats on the radio. Some would dis Clutch if they got air time. Don’t matter to me, they rock no matter what. But if rolling stone turned you on to them, enjoy. And see ‘em live!

curious | 5/12/2009, 2:43 pm EST

Are the Beatles “Stoner Rock” too? I mean, they were pretty stoned.

Can we drop the drug reference to great bands like Clutch, Monster Magnet, Fu Man Chu and Kyuss? There has to be a better name the media clowns can come up with than “Stoner Rock”.

Captain Red Beard | 5/13/2009, 1:34 am EST

I don’t think stoner rock means the band or the fans get high all the time. I’m pretty sure it was a tag given to new bands with a 70’s rock style. Britney Spears was bitching about pot smoke clouds at her Vancouver concert…..Is she stoner rock? Will people look back at the new bands coming out now and call it shit rock? All good questions and there is only one answer…..CLUTCH

red horse rainbow | 5/13/2009, 9:31 pm EST

I like the tag stoner rock, when ya see Clutch live, (I have about 15 times)they tend to go off on improv jams, like the Grateful Dead did. Definitely sweet when you’re stoned. Can’t wait for the new album!!! and yes I love the Dead too.

Stone Rocker | 5/14/2009, 10:41 pm EST

The genre of “Stoner Rock” is not so named because of smoking pot, well not directly. It is a reference to the song “Sweet Leaf” by Black Sabbath. And of course that song was about pot. Stoner Rock is a 90s-modern style that is based on the type of rock that the song “Sweet Leaf” exemplifies from the early 70’s. Black Sabbath was the father of heavy metal and the grandfather of Stoner Rock. So Stoner Rock is a reference to the musical style of that song, not a reference to what that song is actually about. Clutch has long since surpassed their days as Black Sabbath wanna-be’s. Now Clutch are the gods of rock and Back Sabbath wishes they were ever as awesome as Cutch!

waychild | 5/19/2009, 11:48 pm EST

Clutch f****n ROCKS!!!!! The combination of from-the-bones rock, and deep, meaningful, intelligent lyrics, proves to me that Clutch is a powerhouse to be reckoned with. In my opinion they are a severely underrated band. Which is why i’m SHOUTING OUT TO ALL OF YOU WHO HASN’T GIVEN THESE GUYS A LISTEN!!!! YOU WONT REGRET IT! 100% GUARANTEED, ROCK SATISFACTION!!!!
I admit, I’m a new fan (2 yrs), but im a hardcore fan. Lets give these guys the credit they deserve.
I personally am exited, and chomping at the bit to hear their new album.
LET THERE BE ROCK!!!!!!!!

puffdannyp | 5/21/2009, 3:43 am EST

I’ve been a fan of clutch ever since ‘93 when I first heard them in high school and have’nt missed a show in Oregon since! Also, everyone I’ve introduced to Clutch has gotten Clutchified just like me! They are the greatest band, that no one has heard of, of all time, which is the way they want to be! Korn was like that, then they got big, and then they got too pop! Rock On! Clutch!

WhatTheFock | 5/22/2009, 1:41 pm EST

I think Kings of Arizona would have been the first release off the album….that was like in Feb. Clutch has played it live the times I’ve seen them till now. As for needing new clutch fans….stay home smoke pot and dont come. I have seen to many half azzed attemps at mosh pits by the newbies lately. pro-rock check it out

Marcus | 5/24/2009, 7:19 am EST

clutch clutch clutch Rollins Stone have taken over 15 years to see the light. Call them Stoner, call them whatever, just go to a gig and see the light. you won’t care what they’re called.

I have been a fan of tha might CLUTCH since my ol buddy introduced me to Transnational Speedway League back in ‘97…these guys met up not far from where I’m from, and I think they are the greatest from MD bsides Chesapeake Bay Crabs (food, people, NOT VD)…nehoo, hope they keep up the good work on this one and get my way soon!!!

Getting into CLutch the past few months, they kick hoop! It takes a bit of time for some songs to click but when they do! And I still have to buy their stuff from Blast Tyrant onwards and also Jam Room.

Come to Ireland! Pleeeeasseee!

David rose | 5/30/2009, 3:36 am EST

CLUTCH has been my favorite band for more than ten years. have turned many people into Clutch fans also.
great live, great lyrics, great music, and every album is different, but still CLUTCH.
rock on

theprofitofdoom | 5/31/2009, 11:13 pm EST

CLUTCH is by far the greatest band ever!!! i have been a fan since 98′ and i have been to 18 shows, there is NOTHING better than a live CLUTCH show!! the rush from watching the great Neil Fallon perform is unexplainable!! they definitely deserve more recognition than they’ve been given and their music goes alot deeper than the stoner rock label they’ve been given!!

First… Clutch is just a next level band, even more so live. They don’t need a stage show or gimmicks. What you hear is also what you get! And you also get The Bakerton Group (Clutch with no singing). 9 Albums of consistent gold!
Second. Giddy up the Clutch love. Other than the first 4 posts here everyone is all about Clutch.

Mo Elliot | 6/1/2009, 2:56 pm EST

Oh and check ok their myspace!
3 of the new songs are up there!

CLUTCH!!!!!!!!!!!! | 6/2/2009, 4:37 pm EST

You cannot categorize the mighty Clutch. They defy it. They defy every stereotype, political agenda, and rock n’ roll cliche’ ever imagined on planet earth. I’m glad they aren’t bigger or more recognizable. The majority of idiots out there don’t deserve ‘em.

subtlhustle | 6/2/2009, 11:48 pm EST

Clutch IS music, exclamation.

biocon | 6/4/2009, 3:08 am EST

Oh man- Clutch is one of my favorites, too. I just moved to Germany and they love Clutch here, too. We started listening to them and going to see them in Raleigh NC around 1994. Great to see so many others into them here.

NastyBedazzler | 6/5/2009, 4:25 pm EST

I haven’t really gotten into the newer Clutch material (although the song, “Burning Beard” is a classic), but loved all their old stuff. They really are under rated but have quite the cult following.

AreWeThereYeti? | 6/11/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Labels are for lazy writers. “Is it metal? Is it hard rock? Is it pop-rock-fusion? Is it yabba-dabba-doo-doo with a side of progressive jazz noodles? WHO CARES?
I’ve been a MUSIC fan for 40 years, and there is no band or songwriter on the planet who brings the craft to the same height that CLUTCH does.
Every member brings their best; they know how to write a hook that stays in your gills for days; they know how to bring the Heavy; melodies are never sacrificed for the sake of badassness; and of course, Neil Fallon is the MAN. No one, and I mean NO ONE, writes like he does. It’s whip-smart, often-humorous, imaginative story-telling at its finest.
Mr. Fallon has made me reach for a dictionary more often than David Foster Wallace. That’s saying something.
Rolling Stone editors: I’ve subscribed to your mag for many years – until now. I didn’t renew my subscription for the first time in a long time. I resolve no remain mag-less until you feature this incredible band. Get Fricke on it, right now. Surely he knows of them…

A Dragonfly | 6/15/2009, 6:57 pm EST

Can’t wait for the Starland Ballroom shows. Go check out the footage from ther Full Fatho Five DVD from those shows. Unreal…
