Levon Helm, Jefferson Starship, Country Joe to Play Woodstock 40th Anniversary Show

5/4/09, 5:37 pm EST

Levon Helm Band, Jefferson Starship and Country Joe McDonald are among the acts that will descend on Bethel, New York, on August 15th to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival, Billboard.biz reports. Mountain, Ten Years After, Canned Heat and Big Brother and the Holding Co. will also play the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a venue built on the site of the original Woodstock, which ran from August 15th-17th, 1969.

Helm appeared at the 1969 fest with the Band, while Jefferson Starship took the Woodstock stage as Jefferson Airplane. With the exception of Big Brother & the Holding Co. — Janis Joplin performed at the ‘69 concert with the Kozmic Blues Band — the rest of the acts performing on August 15th all had a set at the original Woodstock festival. As Rock Daily previously reported, Richie Havens will also play a Woodstock-related event on August 14th, returning to Bethel to perform “Freedom,” the song that opened up the ‘69 festival, at a media-only event.

Four decades after it drew hundreds of thousands to upstate New York, Woodstock promises to be everywhere this summer. Taking Woodstock, an Ang Lee-directed comedy about the behind-the-scenes story of the fest, is due to hit movie theaters on August 14th. Plus, Woodstock.com plans to relaunch itself as a social networking site and the festival’s original promoters and organizers are scrambling to hammer down plans to commemorate the original festival by 2010.

Yeah is this yes to this whole 4th woodstock?

Ryan | 5/5/2009, 11:05 am EST

Sounds kinda weak….they should have a Phish festival there

Harm410city | 5/5/2009, 11:56 am EST

I agree, Melanie needs to be there as well as The Who, and Santana…and they should all do the same set that they originally did at the 69 Woodstock..how cool would that be!?

… these bands sound great and it is also great that they are all willing to play. This will be a huge success!!!

Black Hole Sun | 5/5/2009, 1:57 pm EST

I hope Jefferson Starship comes back with Grace Slick, even if it’s just for one performance.

Wutang | 5/5/2009, 2:57 pm EST

So who is this going to be geared for? Only teens and early 20 somethings will be willing to camp out for days at a festival and they are not going care/know who half of these bands are. And anyone who went to the original or is in that age range are sure to be turned off already over the disaster that was Pepsis Woodstock 99

And I’ll be there again
I’m 75 years old and ready
to tune in turn on and drop out.

Hippies now rule the world :)

angelo grippo | 5/5/2009, 7:26 pm EST

how about HOT TUNA and the DEAD

Bob | 5/5/2009, 8:52 pm EST

I really hope that this edition of Woodstock goes back to the spirit of the original festival. I think the spirit of Max Yasgar might show up, introduced by Wavy Gravy. We are stardust indeed.

auramac | 5/6/2009, 12:39 am EST

They’ve gotta stop doing this- it’s a joke. Everybody’s dead, including Garcia. Stop calling it Woodstock, and these old-timers should get another gig.

Willie | 5/6/2009, 1:03 am EST

Rolling Stone Magazine was based on this music. Ain’t it a shame their subscriber base don’t know the bands, the players, or the tunes. I say long live rock.

Les | 5/6/2009, 2:22 am EST

Jefferson Starship……that about says it all.

Jon G. | 5/6/2009, 2:47 am EST

Odds are that this edition of Starship will NOT be the `80s-Mickey-Thomas-led pop band; rather, the original offshoot of the Airplane, with Balin, et al. Unfortunately, that could mean “Miracles,” which is no less irritating to me that “We Built This City” is to others.

petey | 5/6/2009, 3:18 am EST

Ain’t these fu ckers allowed to retire?

Anonymous | 5/6/2009, 9:09 am EST

I feel like the festival will not be anything close to what it was in ‘69. Just look at what happened last time they tried to do Woodstock again, it was terrible. I wish that they could recreate what they had before, but times have certainly changed, and people do not believe in Peace, Love, and Music anymore, they believe in making money. I hope that it will be fun for everone that goes, but I would not expect it to be like the original Woodstock.

Anonymous | 5/6/2009, 10:39 am EST

People its Bethal Woods! its not supposed to be some huge festival geared towards twenty year olds. ITs on the ground of the originally Woodstock in a small ampitheater. nothing to do with Woodstock 94 or 99!

Ger | 5/6/2009, 11:20 am EST

The event needs to capture the innocence of the time/era. It’s neat they have some of the original acts, but I don’t think solely it should rest with them. there are new bands carrying on the spirit of brotherhood. those bands should get the invite to play. As for Jefferson starship, I’m sure it will be with Balin, but I prefer the 1979-84 version myself.

LuLu | 5/7/2009, 4:29 am EST

Obviously it won’t be the same feel of the first and the 94 & 99 festivals. It just a show to remember the 40th anniversary. So soome of same guys are going to be there, the bands that were there have memembers who have since passed away and the ones who are left hav a right to play and have a rememberence. As for the last two, I think those were about greed and alcohol and drugs. Not that the 69 Woodstock certainly wasn’t. But it is what it is. If someone can bankroll it as apposed to another one, then wonderful, it can be a small venue, for some good times and music.

thedetoxg | 5/7/2009, 9:53 am EST

hope it was like woodstock 99

Titus77 | 5/8/2009, 1:21 pm EST

Listen, young’uns, Woodstock set the standard. It’s part of our national zeitgeist. There hasn’t been an event like it since, except maybe the ‘82 US Festival, and the Live Aid/Live 8 shows. And while Grace Slick is unlikely to show up (she’s long since retired from performing), Darby Gould, who has been singing with JS for over 15 years, is incredible.

wheeler98 | 5/8/2009, 5:15 pm EST

Canned Heat-Al Wilson\Bob Hite dead
Jefferson Airplane-Kantner only
Big Brother-Janis Joplin dead
10 years after-no Alvin Lee
Jimi Hendrix dead
Levon Helm without the Band
Mountain-Felix Pappalardi dead

What’s the point? The magic of the festival was new and exciting bands of the day…not washed up fake tribute bands that are ot relevant or revolutionary.

Go to Coachella or Lollapalooza instead…or just buy the dvd..it’ll be much better than this farce..

StevenX | 5/9/2009, 10:32 am EST

Shouldn’t they be called “Jefferson Wheelchair” by now?

bd | 5/10/2009, 12:03 pm EST

Levon Helm’s current Band is a killer 21/2 hours of true Rock & Roll,, he is the class of this pathetic event,,

He & his world class musicians will kick major butt,,,

the rest – FEH !!!

Woodstock 2009
Forget about it,Woodstock 94
Corporate Bullshit,Woodstock 99 in my mind never existed.
There was only one Woodstock Festival and that was 1969.
And Woodstock 69 still rules the world.

It is an effort to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of an amazing event that helped change many lives and certainly an attiude in this country. Canned Heat may have lost the Bear and the Owl, but Harvey “The Snake” Mandel, Larry “The Mole” Taylor and Fito de la Parra are still ready to boogie and play some great music for all who would like to remember, reminisce and hear some great musicians and music!

Roger Floyd | 6/2/2009, 7:15 pm EST

Forget Melanie at Woodstock 2009.If the event does take place, we hardly need the aging hippie chick, who now resembles an old woman. Time hasn’t been kind to her. What happened?

Roger Floyd | 6/2/2009, 7:17 pm EST

Who needs an aging hippie like Melanie?

Gus | 6/8/2009, 8:25 pm EST

I was one of the youngest in attendance at Woodstock in 1969. From my perspective, no event since has captured the soul of a generation as Woodstock did. I attended a multitude of festivals, etc., after Woodstock and as great as some of them were, nothing has ever matched the experience of Woodstock for me. If there is another Woodstock affair in 2010 to acknowledge the original, cancel the original acts that one might be tempted to invite and let the sound of the day prevail instead, let the affair find its own life and let people who attend walk away with their own special memories.

Jimi Yaro | 7/24/2009, 2:24 pm EST

The 40th anniversary should be celebrated with any of the original performers still alive and kickin’, including Johnny Winter, Arlo, Joan Baez, CSNY, John Sebastian, Santana, and everyone esle willin’ to make it. Would also like to see Steve Earle, Tom Rush, Emmylou Harris, Collective Soul, Ringo Starr added to the list of performers, along with John Prine, Michael Nesmith, and Diana Krall.

Tom | 8/3/2009, 1:56 pm EST

The original Woodstock was a marquis to our generation. The philosophies practiced there (Peace, Love and Brotherhood) are still a way of life for many brothers and sisters of our generation today. It’s becoming clear that our “philosophy”, plus the ecology movement are going to be our generation’s contribution to the evolution of American Society.
Sooooooo!!! Bring on the music that reminds us why we’re here. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t even mention Hip Hop, Rap or Metal. Do them another time.

psbwreckingball | 8/7/2009, 2:27 pm EST

40 years ago Woodstock 69 was an Ascending Spiritual Event in the history of mankind. It shaped the history and future of modern music. It also brought about a revolution of Mind! It doesn’t matter who is dead or still playing or how old they are. There were many different styles of music just as there are today! The Source energy that was then is Now!The angst, the peace is with us all!I am sure that “Rise Against” or “Flobots” would love to be a part of “WoodstockNation”if they are not already! I am absolutly sure of that. Young or old it doen’t matter. We are leaving the Piscean Age in the dust. 40 years ago we felt this. We knew this in the heat and the rain and the mud.If dont agree” Sit and Spin” It’s totally your choice to decend or ascend! I want to make it again but you see I never left. We Are ONE!

Marcia | 8/16/2009, 11:07 am EST

They have PAVED PARADISE AND PUT UP A PARKING LOT! What a huge disappointment. Missed ‘69, made ‘94 (with Melanie “free” bless her heart) and was not sorry to drive away on all the new concrete in 2009!

Pat 10/20/2009 | 10/20/2009, 8:05 pm EST

Was the ‘BAND” at the Anniversary
Have heard that they held out and never appeared.

JormpJomp | 10/21/2009, 7:34 pm EST

Won’t be the same without Janis Joplin, of course! There are some incredible live videos of her at Woodstock 69 and other live performances on YouTube.

Erin | 11/23/2009, 6:48 pm EST

Speaking of Janis Joplin, you should check out Nina Simone’s original version of “Little Girl Blue” and compare to Janis version!
