Anvil Exposed: Canadian Metal Vets Rock With Slash, Talk Doc

5/1/09, 2:53 pm EST

Anvil! The True Story of Anvil is the year’s most praised rock doc, a film that follows Canadian heavy-metal outfit Anvil on their 30-year-plus quest for rock stardom and respect. The Smoking Section’s Austin Scaggs recently hung out with Anvil guitarist and singer Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner, who founded the band in 1977, and chatted about how the movie has become “the best opening act we’ve ever had.”

Go behind the scenes at the band’s RS photo shoot, where the band get the butler treatment, in our exclusive video, above (the best pic appears in our current issue). “People go, ‘Wow, man, 30 years. You guys didn’t make millions of dollars, why did you just stay together?’ ” Lips says. “What, you have to make millions of dollars to have an enjoyment in your life? What’s wrong with people?’ It’s not that I’m crazy, I think the rest of the world is crazy. If everything was motivated strictly by cash, we would have never gone to the moon. We’d still be living in caves!”

After the jump, an Anvil bonus: footage of the band jamming with Slash and Anthrax’s Scott Ian. When Rock Daily first encountered Anvil at 2008’s Sundance Film Festival, the band rocked a party and jammed with the pair on “Cat Scratch Fever.” And now, thanks to the success of the Anvil doc, the band is back in business with a manager and booking agent, and plans to record its 15th album, Juggernaut of Justice this year. “This movie has opened doors, but we would have kept rocking anyway,” Reiner says. “Especially when you have the goods, like we do.”

Great band. Anvil was one of the original speed and thrash metal pioneers. I didn’t know about them until thier movie was advertised on That Metal Show on VH1 Classic( awesome show, I highly recommend it). They have some fantastic songs that really should have become heavy metal anthems by now like “Metal on Metal”, “Mothra”, “Tag Team”, “Forged in Fire”, “Jackhammer”, “School Love” and whole load of other good songs. They have an album out right now called This is Thirteen that was released in 2007, so it’s a must buy for a die hard metal fan. I hope they can get some success from this movie and I want to thank Eddie Trunk for giving these guys some radio play.

Great band and a great movie!
Now if someone would just do the same for other bands that have been labeled as ground breakers bu have not gotten their due (TROUBLE) things would be great!

Now we need to get documentaries about other underrecognized bands that have been around for over thirty years. Namely, Wire and Mekons.

Didn’t know much about the band prior to the film, but after watching the movie I’m interested in checking their material out.

I saw Anvil when they were called “LIPS” in 1980 in QC City, then I saw them when they became Anvil. I saw them performing in 2002 in Montreal and they still had that magical energy. When I saw the movie at the BAM in Brooklyn in 2008, I was moved and happy to really get to know them through this great documentary. It’s not only about music but also about dreams, friendship and tenacity. It’s a unique movie as well as Anvil is a unique band.

Anvil’s the best.
Robb Reiner is one of the world’s best drummers ever.
He will double stroke you to death.

It’s an interesting fact of humanity that people will want to like something if other people do. So now we have people jumping on the Anvil bandwaggon. But good for them I guess ! If only we could listen to what we liked and ignore peer pressure and the media.

Dude Man | 5/2/2009, 5:20 pm EST

Hey Bernito I like Anvil because they’re a great band not because of the media.

I grew up listening to this band while living in the Greater Toronto Area. They were a well liked band in the 80’s but after their first few albums I never heard of any new stuff. Even in Toronto until now!

I was introduced Anvil! soon after the release there 2nd disk and I remember that it was the fastest and heaviest music that I had ever heard, although I never knew that they put out anything after that.
It’s really sad that such a great band has been swept under the rug until now. I am glad that you guys are finally getting the recognition that you deserve.
I cant wait to see you (finally) in Dallas tomorrow night!

best rock-doc ever…and rocking band…Anvil forever….just bought 20 cds and gave them away to friends…they all love it

Stevie P in B.C. | 11/8/2009, 12:40 am EST

I just watched the documentary and suddenly had deja vu….. I remembered the Muchmusic interviews and a young long-haired John (J.D.) Roberts….. anyways, I thought the movie was outstanding. It did a fantastic job of portraying the undying optimism and dignity of these guys. This is music for the love of music, not commercial gain. Best of luck and look forward to the next 30……
