“Fix My Hat” Off Lil Wayne’s “Rebirth” Hits the Web

“Fix My Hat,” another track from Lil Wayne’s Rebirth, has hit the Web. Described as “an homage to vintage Beastie Boys” in our Spring Music Preview, the 808-soaked song is devoid of the nu-metal guitars and Auto-Tune we’ve come to expect from Rebirth’s previous singles “Prom Queen” and “Hot Revolver.” In fact, “Fix My Hat” sounds like it would fit more comfortably on Run-DMC’s beat-heavy Raising Hell than their own heavy metal-tinged LP King of Rock. Get the goods over at Nah Right.

As Rock Daily reported earlier this week, Rebirth producer Dre of Cool & Dre told MTV, “There’s some rock records on there, but there’s also some records where he’s rapping. It’s a Lil Wayne album. It’s what you expect from Lil Wayne, where he’s at creatively.” “Fix My Hat” fits into the “where he’s rapping” category, with Weezy spitting straight rhymes before launching into a chorus that alternates between “Let me fix my hat” and “Let me fix my gat.” According to Nah Right, the track was produced by Spliffington Management’s Drew Money, a.k.a. Pro V, who previously served as engineer on songs like Jay-Z’s “Hello Brooklyn 2.0″ and Chris Brown & Kanye West’s “Down.”

Rebirth, originally targeted for release this month, has been pushed back to June 23rd. “Wayne knows some people aren’t gonna feel this,” manager Cortez Bryant told Rolling Stone for our Spring Music Preview. “He don’t care.” Dre compared Rebirth to OutKast’s Aquemini, saying, “It’s still a rap album, but was it really a rap album compared to all the other rap albums at that time? André Benjamin was evolving artistically to where he’s at now — Wayne is doing the same thing, and he’s not afraid to show you his growth.”

being a fan of bands such as the aforementioned Nirvana, Zepplin, The Cure, Oasis, Radiohead, Thin Lizzy I feel that I may be ‘educated’ enough to reply to seem of Lil Wayne’s detractors.
Firstly I like a wide range of music and currently own up to 500 CDs ranging from the likes of Nirvana through to lesser known bands such as Spineshank and The Datsuns. However people whose sole purpose is to undermine the creativity of another person; without the ability to offer the world anything creatively themselvesthemselves, because he is a ‘Rapper’ who shouldn’t cross genres or simply beacuse you disagree with his ethos is slightly ridiculous.

Music is Art. You cannot tell another person that their art doesn’t matter. In fact next time you want to complain; think of all the artists who have been slaughtered (and there have been many) by critics and music lovers fo not being creative enough to do someting ‘diffrent’ and just RESPECT the fact that Lil Wayne has taken a chance. Whether he’s damned by the critics or not; least he’s taken a shot.

p.s. if im considered part of the ‘uneducated brigade’ of Lil Wayne fans then consider that I currently study Law at University; negating any suspicion that I may be either unintelligent. Thanks.

I respect your comment. But what you forget is that Lil Wayne doesn’t have to release everything he writes. He has proved that he can’t do rock not because he is a rapper, but because the tracks off of rebirth he released suck. Before he tries rock maybe he should learn about rock, learn how to play guitar, and realize that his shit doesn’t smell like roses. Then maybe after hard work and practice he can start trying to tackle a new genre of music. But if his job is to make good music that will not only be in music stores, but constantly aired on TV and radio, he should probably put in more effort.

firstly METLWILLCONQUERALL thats a better shaped pinion than many on here; and Prom Queen is a love it or hate it song, its a piece that divides rather than unites.

However if you listen to Hot Revolver, a track that is not quite Rap/Rock but a clever mix (some dislike the Green Gay quote) of R&B/Electro-Synth then you would have to concede that (for a rapper) it is the most orignal piece of work to come from any artist predominantely associated with the Rap genre since Aerosmith & Run DMC; and in fact any genre for a long time.

Also if he wants to ply his trade in two genres he may have to fail before eventually succeeding; if not then I have nothing but respect for a man who was not going t keep churning out the same album over and over again but changing a few lyrics and beats, something Eminem does year after year; commercial first single (with refrence to celebrity headlines) – earning praise for the same old sh*t.

The best thing to do in order to really appreciate not just one type of music genre but music all together is to broaden your horizon; its impossible to experience the variations of something as broad as music by listening to the same thing agan and again and again.

Of course unless its talentless co-orparte gimicks like Miley Cyrus, Jonas Bors, Mcfly etc.

I like Wayne, I don’t like this. He’s got the ability to tear shit up, but he didn’t bring it this time. I’m not necessarily opposed to him stepping into the rock genre, but this is a step backwards in my opinion. He needs to lay off the promethazine. I also feel like we’ve all been a little overexposed, I can’t tell where his talent stops and my own personal preferences come into play.
