Bob Dylan’s “Together Through Life” On Pace for Number One

4/30/09, 11:46 am EST

After just two days on sale, Rolling Stone cover artist Bob Dylan’s latest album Together Through Life is already on pace to top next week’s sales charts, Billboard reports. Together Through Life will likely finish the week with sales upward of 100,000, but will be hard-pressed to match the 192,000 copies Modern Times sold in its debut week in 2006. The LP would mark the fifth time Dylan has landed a Number One album.

According to Billboard, Dylan’s first chart-topper in America was 1974’s collaboration with the Band, Planet Waves. Number Ones for 1975’s Blood on the Tracks and 1976’s Desire quickly followed, and 30 years later Dylan accomplished the feat again with Modern Times. Dylan’s last official non-album release, Tell Tale Signs, debuted at Number Six in October 2008.

Douglas Brinkley followed Dylan to Europe for the new issue of RS, on sale now, speaking to the songwriter about American icons like Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry, George Bush, finding the ideal guitarist and collaborating with Robert Hunter on the lyrics for his new LP. Take a look back at his previous appearances in RS in a gallery of Dylan’s Rolling Stone covers, and experience his paintings in a collection of Dylan’s artwork. Tomorrow, we’ll have a guide to Dylan’s greatest collaborations.

He’s done it again! Even if he’s mainly just using old blues melodies, it works. And Bob can really sing the blues at this tage of his career with those shredded vocal chords. Long live the maestro!

Brilliant… And oh poor me for not being able to go past the first song… “beyond here lies nothing”…how appropriate…

It’s so refreshing to hear skilled world-wise musicians belting out tunes. In this era of Pro Tools and Auto Tune, I can only mourn what we’ve all lost – the collective joy of hearing fellow humans making music and creating in real time.

Impressions of Dylan’s Together Through Life

The air is stuffy in here, slide guitar slipping down from upstairs, the light heavy with the sticky dust and the bubbling conversation. The thin figure on the red sofa in the white hat raises an eyebrow. The guitar is joined by Texan accordian. And it’s all good. The afternoon swings on, the hot breath of the day coming in sideways. And it’s all good. The door opens, the accordian rustles up a storm and the guitar goes quietly blue. Content to let the days go by. In the doorway the hot street peeks in and we step to the threshold take a look. The thin man tips his hat over his eyes and lets out a sigh but we hardly catch his words. Walking out the guitar is steely ice on the backs of our necks out into the Texas heat. And turning, the door is gone. And it’s all good.
