Ida Maria: Live at Rolling Stone

4/29/09, 5:56 pm EST

Norway’s hottest punk-rock export and Breaking artist Ida Maria recently popped by the Rolling Stone studios to perform four songs and tell Rock Daily about the stories behind a handful of tracks off her acclaimed debut, Fortress Round My Heart. In our first installment of Ida, she presents stripped-down, acoustic versions of two of her biggest singles, “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked” (above) and “Keep Me Warm” (after the jump).

” ‘Keep Me Warm’ and ‘Naked’ are both about love,” Maria tells Rolling Stone. “But ‘Keep Me Warm’ is more about friendship.” But even love songs sound tough in Maria’s Nico-meets-Chrissie Hynde voice, and tales of drunken nights and one-night stands pepper her lyrics. “I had been writing songs for three days and I didn’t bother to get dressed or shower, I was just sitting there in my underwear with a guitar. That was how I came up with it,” she says of writing “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked. (Watch the song’s official video here.)

Now that she’s found success in Europe and is cracking the States, Maria finds it difficult to pen songs in her native tongue. “I’ve been writing a couple songs in Norwegian, but I’ve been writing in English most of the time, so it’s very hard. I have English rhymes in my head but not rhymes in Norwegian,” Maria says.

I saw the music video for “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked”, and she sucks. It makes “I Kissed a Girl” sound like a Whitney Houston song. The song sucks, she sucks, it’s horrible. People are giving Katy Perry lots of hate, but Ida Maria is no different than her, and she’s getting praise. I don’t get it. This chick is NOT the next Debbie Harry. If this is what Rolling Stone considers to be “Norway’s hottest punk-rock export”, then ABBA is still the most bad-ass Scandinavian export.

Why was my comment removed? It wasn’t “off-topic”, it was right on point. Oh I get it, I’m entitled to an opinion so long is it’s not against what Rolling Stone thinks, right? Well I’ll say it again: Ida Maria SUCKS, and I find it funny that you guys talk down Katy Perry, but you hail Ida as “Norway’s hottest punk-rock export” when she is HARDLY any better than Katy. “I like you so much better when you’re naked” is no more inspiring than “I kissed a girl and I liked it”. It’s the same B.S., except with a punkier sound.

i think shes awesome.

I won’t be as angry as Black Hole Sun, but I do think that here song writing needs some vast improvement. So far what I got from her two songs is that the most important thing in her life is being naked and smoking.

alright “Black Hole Sun.” I happened to see this talented singer songwriter live and i was blown away.very raw emotional and clever songwriting. comparing her to kate perry?! thats the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard and you obviously dont know much about music or songcraft. The lyric is “I like you so much better when you’re naked, I like ME so much better when your naked!’ A little more going on in there than “I kissed a girl and I liked it”. She’s a got a good thing going on and reminds me of that seminal band The Pretenders. Oh but wait you’ re to much of a douchebag to even know who they are. And another thing, ABBA fucking rules! Any great songwriter will tell that.

“I like you so much better when you’re naked, I like ME so much better when your naked!’

Oh yeah, such a BIG difference! I’m so sorry for not getting it right! Yeah, you’re right, she’s not kissing girls, she’s getting naked,! Such a vast difference from Katy Perry! I think Bob Dylan better watch his back. If that’s what you consider to be great songwriting, then I shudder to think what kind of you crap you would ever come up with.

You are the one who is a completely closed minden being. Even if I don’t mind I Kissed A Girl, this songs is in a completely different place. I don’t think this is the best song either, bit hey! It’s fun, it’s clever. Yes, it is.

And hey, okay, it’s you’re opinion if she sucks, fine! but you don’t have to convince people that she sucks.

Ramones were great rock. Most of they’re songs weren’t very philosophical but they were fun! So stop complaining.

LOL. You really are a dumbass. She never directly says she’s getting naked in the song. That’s the whole point. She’s using the dude to make herself feel better you nonce. Secondly I never compared Ida Marya to Dylan you fuckhead. Nor did I insinuate she was on his level, even though she still is fantastic. I compared her sound and attitude to the Pretenders (who you obviously don’t know shit about otherwise you would have said something about it) And yes, any good songwriter, music critic, or anyone who simply has good taste in music will tell you that Ida Maria is vastly different and has way more depth than ur douchebag of a guilty pleasure, Kate Perry. Go jerk off to your poster of Chris Cornell asshole.

If you knew anything about that band or music in general, you would understand my point. Wow, so much hate over two very mediocre artists. Let’s be honest, both will be forgotten in three years.

Guro | 5/9/2009, 12:14 pm EST

The hardest thing there is, is to wright a good song, that sounds easy. I think Ida Maria is great at that.

And, I also saw her live, and I loved her at once. It totally changed my view at her. To bad everyone cant see her live. Ida Maria rocks!!!

Black Hole Sun: it is not nice to say those ting, even if you dont like her. You should threet people with respect, and tolerate different types of music, artists, songwrighting and so on.. Why would you use your energy writing that people suck, when you could do so much else.

Stå på Ida Maria! :o )

i think it’s time for a little snack of lighten-the-f@@k-up. There’s plenty of change-the-world-music out there, or wanna-be. Rock out, get naked. Sometimes it’s enough to just want to crank it in the car and laugh along, whether it’s derivative, shallow or any other less-holy-than-thou standard. Who cares if you forget it in a week or not? Rock on!

Hawk | 6/11/2009, 5:23 am EST

WOW…Chill…she has a good voice and catchy lyrics, a pretty face and lots of good rock energy. I am a 62 year old ‘ol rocker and I think she is fresh and really cool. Not everybody has to like her. But I do and I think she has something special and I wish her the best!
