Wilco Keep It Simple, Name New LP “Wilco (The Album)”

You have to give it up for Wilco for making things so simple. The group’s seventh album — due out in late June — will be titled Wilco (The Album). Even cooler: there’s a cut on the disc titled “Wilco, The Song,” which Glenn Kotche describes to Rock Daily as “a great, upbeat song professing our love for our fans.”

There’s a little something for everyone on the group’s new disc, which they recorded in their loft space in Chicago. “One Wing” and “Sunny Feeling” are breezy, pop-friendly tunes; “Deeper Down” is a mellow ballad spiked with atmospherics and chamber strings; the nearly-six-minute jam “Bull Black Nova” starts with rollicking drums, stacatto keys and guitars before exploding into a killer solo from guitarist Nels Cline. Think of the it as a sonic follow-up to the kraut-rockin’ “Spiders (Kidsmoke).” “That one’s a really intense, powerful song,” says Kotche of “Nova.” “It’s got a static groove that’s really insistent. There’s a lot of great guitar moments on that song.”

This June, Wilco will hit the road for a summer tour of festivals (Bonnaroo, 10,000 Lakes), minor league ball parks (Keyspan Park in Brooklyn, NY) and intimate theaters and the crew will be unleashing most of the 11 tracks from the new record. But for the die-hard fans, Wilco will add deep cuts from discs like “Summerteeth” and “A.M.” to their ever-changing set lists each night. “I prefer that we not repeat songs each night,” says Kotche. “We know enough songs to not repeat them. Mixing it up keeps us on our toes and keeps it fresh.”

They performed Wilco the Song on the Colbert Report like 6 months ago.

What’s with the inconsistent punctuation on “Wilco (The Album)” and “Wilco The Song”? I hate to be a stickler, but it’s kinda amateurish. And maybe I’m alone, but I always liked my Wilco a little less sophomorically jokey…

Zack | 4/28/2009, 6:35 pm EST

JD, that’s really douche-y. Who care’s what the album and songs are titled as long as it’s good music?

T-Cap | 4/28/2009, 6:38 pm EST

I think the title of the song will be “Wilco (The Song)”.

It’s probably Rolling Stone’s error.

JD | 4/28/2009, 7:19 pm EST

No shit the music’s the most important thing, Zack. Of course, you wouldn’t be reading (or commenting on) this post if the titles were totally irrelevant.

Could’ve sworn I read on this site that they worked on this album in New Zealand, not just their “loft space in Chicago”. Another brilliant stroke of journalistic excellence from RS.

Jeroen | 4/29/2009, 5:56 am EST

It’s defintely Wilco the Song. At least, that’s what is says on the official Wilco website (check under News).

I’m REALLY REALLY curious ’bout the new album and especially it’s production. Although I liked SBS, I hope this will be a BIG departure :)

Dwigt | 4/29/2009, 6:03 am EST

Actually the spelling for “Wilco The Song” is the same on the official website, so put the blame on them first even if it’s obvious that it will actually be “Wilco (The Song)”.

I love the way Wilco sounds like they’re not taking themselves as seriously with this record. That said, I was NOT a fan of “Wilco, The Song” when I heard it on Colbert.

dude | 4/29/2009, 4:22 pm EST

Can’t wait…I’ve seen them three times and each show blew my mind. I think it’s a sweet album name for their discography.

Tenskwatawa | 4/29/2009, 4:59 pm EST

I’m disappointed in myself for having read these stupid f*****g comments. I’m gonna go get a life. You all should too.

I’ve never been to a Wilco gig.
I’ve never listened to all of
Wilco’s music.
I couldn’t tell you the name of
everybody in Wilco.
Having said that?
Wilco, ROCK.

Wilco(the band)= Genius(the intelligence rating)!

mjay | 5/3/2009, 9:15 pm EST

JD they are both the same…Wilco (the song) and Wilco (the album)…check the official website. amateur!

jeh | 5/4/2009, 3:40 pm EST

WILCO will never be as exciting without crazy Jay Bennett rocking on lead guitar…..
yankee Hotel Foxtrot will be the last WILCO record I’ll ever own.
It’s the high point of their career.

TSTARK1 | 5/5/2009, 9:13 am EST

Do you think now Rolling Stone will finally release “Wilco (The Rolling Stone Cover)”?

bogsley | 5/6/2009, 1:21 am EST

Should have a song called Jay Bennet (the douchebag)

jeh | 5/6/2009, 11:48 am EST

Do you mean “Jay Bennett – The amazing genius of WILCO” douchebag?
talent that comes through WILCO, when he is challenged for control or upstaged.
P. McCartney never got rid of G. Harrison.
It’s just not WILCO without Bennett.

jeh | 5/6/2009, 11:53 am EST

Tweedy is just a one trick pony without Jay Bennett. He goes through side-men whenever his control and talent is threatened. It’s a shame. P. McCartney never fired G. Harrison, and he could’ve. It just wouldn’t have been the Beatles without him. WILCO is no Fab 4, maybe a better comparison is Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork.
Anyway,…Bennett is clear cut weirdo and maybe a douchebag, but man, is a music genius.
TWeedy’s loss.

Bennet fan | 5/8/2009, 1:54 pm EST

It’s true, Jay Bennet is amazing. Look at all the great records he’s released since he’s been kicked out of Wilco.

Oh wait….

jeh | 5/8/2009, 3:45 pm EST

oh…..good point,……I was never good in debate class.

Alright then,…Go WILCO!!!!

Sorry Jay…need some ammo…

Sam in Oz | 5/14/2009, 4:37 am EST

Wilco are my favourite band, and have been since I really got into then after watching the YHF doco at three in the morning on a Melbourne public TV station after smoking really long cigarettes all night. They sounded just as good late the next day when I bought YHF. Not many bands can do that.

Sam in Oz | 5/14/2009, 4:40 am EST

Really good cruisy album the new one. Lots of George Harrison and Bowie influences

fishstick-s | 7/15/2009, 12:02 am EST

New album is quite good but Wilco’s ‘momment in the sun’ (thanks to Jay) came on Summerteeth… Tweedy is GOD

braillesurfer | 7/20/2009, 11:22 pm EST

I’m a pretty huge wilco fan and I hate to say it but I haven’t been loving their last 3 albums. Foxtrot was brilliant and everything before it rocked.
