Alice In Chains have signed with Virgin/EMI and will release their first album with new singer William DuVall, the Los Angeles Times reports. The still-untitled record is due out in mid-September. The LP will be the great grunge band’s first of new material since 1995’s Alice In Chains, which featured singer Layne Staley, who died of a drug overdose in 2002. DuVall, who previously fronted the band Comes With the Fall, became Alice in Chains’ new lead singer in 2005.

(The ’90s are back! Look at who’s reuniting and returning here.)

“I can tell you that some amazing songs were written and recorded. From the heaviest riff-dripping gut puncher to the most sadly beautiful song I think this band has ever recorded, I honestly believe that this album will return Alice In Chains to the top of the hard rock heap,” a post on the band’s official Website reads. Earlier this month Alice in Chains revealed they had completed recording the new album. “Hopefully these new songs will strike a chord and make a similar impact on all of you out there that were moved by this band in the first place,” the post goes on to say.

According to the LA Times, the band received record contracts from pretty much all the major labels based on a five-song demo before eventually deciding on Virgin/EMI to release their new album. One of the new songs is a track called “Your Decision,” which features Cantrell singing about “surviving pain and choosing to live.” That’s followed by a seven-minute rocker that is “built on heavy slabs of guitar, drums and bass, something like Black Sabbath but far quicker,” the LAT writes. Additionally, the band’s official Website hints that “special guests” showed up during recording.

Can’t wait to hear it. Duvall isn’t a bad replacement for Staley, I saw AIC twice in ‘06 and he was pretty damn good.

Jerry’s been stockpiling songs for like 7 years, I think he’s got some great ones left in him.

Lookin forward to it!

artificialred | 4/27/2009, 12:44 pm EST

This will be the best album of 2009. That’s right I am saying that before I even hear it and five months before it comes out!! This is long overdue, the album and the story by Rolling Stones. Now, when the album comes out, I would love to see a feature article on the return of the mighty Alice In Chains!!!!!

Swingline | 4/27/2009, 12:47 pm EST

Rooting for them to pull it off, always loved they put as much into the heavy stuff as they did “SAP” and “Jar of Flies”.

Know it won’t be the same without Layne, but if they can generate that same type of “fingernails on the chalkboard” emotion AIC is known for, it should work.

Jeff | 4/27/2009, 1:49 pm EST

May AIC experience a comeback of AC/DC proportions. They deserve it.

I’ve been impressed with Will DuVall since he fronted Jerry’s solo band.

Art Ackerson | 4/27/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Love Jerry Cantrell and the boys, but you have to drop the name! It’s a disrespect to Layne Staley to call this band Alice in Chains. Some bands can replace a lead singer (I know the circumstances) but Jerry should have changed the name.

matt | 4/27/2009, 5:18 pm EST

jerry cantrell was alice in chains. he was the main songwriter and sang on a lot of classic songs. so they have every right to keep using the name.

14RAY55 | 4/27/2009, 5:32 pm EST

Looking forward to the new recording and a tour.I hope they play at a much better venue this time in south Florida.

Flush | 4/27/2009, 5:40 pm EST

I’m really excited for this album. I hope it gets mainstream attention. With or without it though, the album should be great.

jEFF | 4/27/2009, 5:49 pm EST

Art,

So by your logic, AC/DC should have changed their name as well when their singer OD’d? Gotcha.

flank | 4/27/2009, 6:04 pm EST

Why do we have to wait until September if the album is finished?

1.Nirvana
2.Pearl Jam
3.Alice In Chains
4.Stone Temple Pilots
5.Soundgarden

Mike | 4/27/2009, 7:30 pm EST

Jeff, Bon Scott didn’t OD, he drank, passed out and choked on his own vomit. Get your facts straight, it was an accident, unlike Layne “needle in my balls” Staley, and Kurt “i didn’t blow my own head off, really” Cobain, and whatever that douchebage from Sublime’s name is, his music sucked anyways, so his name is unimportant.

bennie new york | 4/27/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Alice In Chains sucked WITH Layne Staley. What is there to expect from them without him? Maybe at least the lyrics won’t be as depressing, but something tells me this will be an album full of tribute songs. I’m not wasting my time with this shit, and anyone who does has shit for brains.

Tony | 4/27/2009, 10:26 pm EST

AIC without Layne is probably better than most of the “current” bands of today. Bennie, you sound like a real genius. I bet you have an ear for good music. Probably something upbeat and original like the Jonas Brothers.

Jack | 4/28/2009, 12:36 am EST

If it’s anywhere near as good as Degredation Trip, that’ll be awesome.

dude | 4/28/2009, 2:34 am EST

Haven’t heard of the new singer, but I’m rooting for him to do a good job. I trust the rest of the boys for good music and Jerry’s singing contributions as well.
I just heard that Creed reunited and became ill….but after reading this article I felt a lot better.
To Mike:
It was Brad Nowell…and Sublime was fantastic.

huntsta | 4/28/2009, 7:02 am EST

fuck kurt cobain and nirvana.aic are the go william duvall would make layne fucking proud bring on the new gear

Chris | 4/28/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Wow, I didn’t know they were still active. Still, I’d much rather have them than douchebags like Creed.

Travis | 4/28/2009, 12:34 pm EST

Layne was a great frontman for Alice In Chains. I have heard Duvall voice and it fits well with Alice In Chains music. It is sad about Layne because “The needle and the damage done”! It would be awesome if Alice In Chains did that cover song dedicated to Layne on their new album!

artificialred | 4/28/2009, 1:01 pm EST

Hey bennie in New York, sick it up your ass, motherfucker. AIC rules, bitch!!!

arch stanton | 4/28/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Long live cobain. His back catalog will sell more in one day than Alice will on the new oldbum all month. Long Live Cobain. He went out as he wanted to. He was sick of all you Pearl Jam idiots upcoming on his coat tails. Now that is sad……..

Elvis knows best... | 4/28/2009, 1:42 pm EST

William DuVall is great at the lead vocal spot for this legendary group! Alice In Chains was and is an amazing band. Their hits were huge, and their deep tracks are sweet! Layne is a member of the All Dead Rock Show up here… he is still rockin’ hard.

artificialred | 4/28/2009, 5:52 pm EST

I like Nirvana, but Kurt Cobain cannot even touch Layne Staley!! Layne was what Kurt wanted to be, but didn’t have the balls, so he offed himself.

Bruce | 4/28/2009, 7:16 pm EST

AIC should have continued with Cantrell on vocals.Rather then get an extra singer. His solo albums had that AIC sound to them.

But that era of grunge is dead.Cornell flopping as a Timberland produced crooner.Daddy Grohl as dangerous and punk as a flinstones vitamin pill. And pearl jam stuck in the same out-of-ideas and-new-things-to-say rut since 1995.I doubt there is an album-buying audience left for anyone of them.

Dude Man | 4/28/2009, 10:30 pm EST

Bands change and I think we as Alice in Chains’ fans, have to throw our support behind William. Yes, Layne Staley was one of the best rock singers of all time( why do some of rock’s greats have to take drugs and die at such a young age?), but I am putting 100 percent confidence behind William and hope the album will be great. Besides look at the list of great bands that have made good music with different singers: AC/DC, Journey, Van Halen, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Genesis, Anthrax, Rainbow, and the list goes on and on. P.S. I think the Creed bashing was uncalled for.

Gukha | 4/29/2009, 2:15 am EST

This will be good..I know jerry wouldn’t drop any bullshit like those soundgarden dicks..

Oh yeah
Aic>>>>>>>pearl jam

After Ten their shit got boring..

lake monster | 4/29/2009, 11:44 am EST

I wonder what mike does for a living! what a douche bag comment. sublime started a whole new genre. mike, you wouldn’t know good music if it jumped up and bit you. i bet you still live at your mom’s house.

Jungleland2 | 4/29/2009, 4:27 pm EST

I think this will work. AIC’s music ages better than almost any grunge era band (tie with Nirvana, though I like Nirvana better)

Jerry had enough to do with the writing and the sound that they should be able to shift singers successfully and still sound like AIC

Healthy Skeptic | 4/29/2009, 6:06 pm EST

It’s hard to say whether or not the new AIC will be any good. But as fans of music, as we all are, I’m sure we’ll all give it a try and see what we think of it. Honestly, it’s silly to come down on each other for having differing opinions about music. It’s either for you or its not.

Love U. Layne | 4/29/2009, 9:39 pm EST

I have my fingers crossed so tight they’re ready to break. God I hope this new stuff is worthy of the Alice In Chains name…

Wilko | 5/1/2009, 1:28 am EST

AIC played one of the best sets Ive ever seen when i saw them two months ago.
Duvall is incredible.

bigGrabber | 5/2/2009, 10:00 pm EST

enough of you dick ticklers and how much you love nirvana. i dont think there is a more overrated band.

vambo | 5/3/2009, 11:25 am EST

live in Vancouver it was everything and more to with rocking your ass off. we are in for another ride with ine of the best

meg | 5/3/2009, 11:43 pm EST

I have no problem with them going on..but w/o Staley it is not Alice in Chains it’s NOT. And it was Staley who came up with the name. It’s just disrespectful to go on using that name for that band it is not the same lineup. Staley deserves more respect as a musician and a friend than these punk asses give. With music a band and its sound is a combination of elements and once you lose one it is not the same. You don’t see Led Zepplin touring as Led Zepp after Bonham died do you? Respect. They have none and it turns me off. When Page and Plant tour they don’t take the name Led Zepplin because w/o Bonham Led Zepplin no longer exists. The band died with him. Its not right.

Captain Spalding | 5/4/2009, 7:31 pm EST

There will be new music and and new tour. This is fucking GREAT! So for you little bitchy, GREEN-DAY loving pessimistic freaks, go suck on some “American Idol”! Now for the rest off you “Rockers” out there, I demand that you put down some cash, and buy the new CD as soon as it is available. Otherwise, some pissed off clown loving killers will be looking for you! Rock on Alice & Chains!!!

AIC | 5/5/2009, 12:08 pm EST

I loved Layne & his voice was like no other…
Recently when getting the new “Drowning Pool” CD- although much harder, when Ryan singa a melodic note-he has a haunting resemblence of Layne!

k1rocker | 5/9/2009, 2:47 am EST

Wow! I love the debate this comeback is inciting! But seriously, stop arguing about this name or that. It’s not your decision. Like Matt said, J.C. (Yes, I think of the reference often!), was the main songwriter. Nuff Said! By the way, Cobain was the most overrated dude I’ve ever heard! I hear Foo Fighters and think, Kurt who?

Mark-O | 5/11/2009, 6:30 pm EST

Does anyone of you realize Mike Starr (original bassist) left AIC to be replaced by Mike Inez waaaaay before Layne passed? Don’t judge a band by its changes; judge it by its musical contribution. While both bassists have some of the best riffs in modern rock neither will regard themselves better than the other. Every AIC fan loved Layne’s ability, there is no reason great music will not prevail in his absence. It’s an honor and a privilege to listen to AIC once again. ROCK ON!!

AIC Again? | 5/17/2009, 12:46 pm EST

When I first heard of Layne’s passing I got pissed,Where were these guys when Layne spent something like 6 years in his basement booting up?

Particularly Cantrell who was supposed to be one of his best friends and did nothing about it? maybe they were booting up in there homes too?

RANDY | 5/26/2009, 11:35 pm EST

JERRY IS A PUNK! HE DECIDES TO KEEP THE NAME ALICE IN CHAINS EVEN THOUGH LAYNE IS DEAD AND WAS 80% OF THE BAND ON HIS OWN. GIVEN HIM RESPECT,CANTRELL CAN JAM IT OUT. BUT–AND THIS IS A BIG ASS “BUT”, WHEN THE NEW SINGER CAME IN, JERRY SHOULD HAVE PUT THE CRACK PIPE DOWN AND SAID TO HIMSELF”HEY, THIS ISNT ALICE IN CHAINS ANYMORE”. MAYBE ALICE WITH WILLIAM, BUT NOT CHAINS. JERRY WILL DEFEND IT TO THE END, BUT HE SHOULD HAVE NAMED IT, “WE ONCE HAD THE GREATEST SINGER EVER KNOWN TO MAN”….EVEN INEZ AS GRERAT AS HE IS, HE DIDNT CONTRIBUTE TO THE FIRST THREE ALBUMS WHICH THAT CAT MIKE STAR DID, ITS NOT ALICE IN CHAINS ANYMORE..THEY SHOULD HAVE CALLED THEMSELF SPERM LOAD WITH MEBERS OF THE NOW DEFUNCT BAND AIC.

LAYNE DA MAN | 5/27/2009, 5:30 pm EST

AIC is the best band ever assembled. Layne is by far the best front man to ever take the stage!!! If your a true fan, you will give the new AIC a chance…but long live Layne Staley…RIP my friend!

Rooster | 5/27/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Yes that is my nickname and the name should definitly be changed. My top 2 bands are Black Sabbath and AIC, and it was NOT Sabbath without Ozzy. nuff said!!!

Sandoval | 5/28/2009, 5:54 pm EST

I think this album is going to be great, I love AIC and I´m a really big Jerry Cantrell fan (loved his solo albums). Jerry Cantrell has always been the main songwriter/composer of AIC, even though Layne was the best vocalist rock has seen in a long time, so it´s ok, in my opinion, for them to keep the name and do whatever they want with THEIR band (hopefully more great music).

Mark-O | 5/29/2009, 6:15 pm EST

Randys still going to purchase the CD,even if it has the name Alice in Chains on it! Jerry can jam it out (your words) and if AIC was the best “Band” ever then Jerry cannot be a punk, with or without Layne. I’d bet the record company decided the new CD would be released under the name Alice in Chains, not Jerry. It’s likely a financial decision on the part of the record company. Name recognition pure and simple. My guess is the band members are more concerned with the quality of the tunes on the CD than the name on the cover.

AIC FAN | 5/29/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Hey…’Beannie New York’, why did you even waste your time reading the article if AIC ’sucked’ so bad? Get a life!!!

HASON | 6/1/2009, 2:05 am EST

WHO GIVES A FUCK BOTTOM LIBE IS IT IS NOT ALICE IN CHAINS NO MATTER WHAT CANTRELL WANTS TO THINK

Cantrell For President | 6/2/2009, 1:12 pm EST

For those who say they should drop the name, Jerry, Mike, and Sean asked Layne’s mom Nancy if they could still use the name Alice In Chains, and Nancy gave them support so shut the h*ll up and deal with it because Layne’s mom said YES. And as far as the album goes I know why so many record lables wanted to sign them because in Duff’s words “it’s the best album i’ve heard in ten years.” Move over trend bands real rock n roll is back because Cantrell is writing again.

Kevin | 6/2/2009, 6:00 pm EST

Why is Rolling Stone even showing this? They are the worst music critics in the world. I’ve been looking at RS top 500 list, and I’ve yet to see Alice In Chains on any of them. That’s a slap in the face and a joke! To those who make the list Alice In Chains are one of the most important bands in rock history, and you’ve failed to notice that. If you can’t recognize Alice In Chains albums such as Dirt or Jar of Flies on your “top 500 albums” list then don’t touch on their next masterpiece. In my rightful opinion, Dirt is the best album of the 90’s by a long shot and is the 15th greatest album of all time (#1 being Dark Side of The Moon). Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell are the greatest duets in Rock N Roll histroy the harmionies they made will never be reproduced ever again as well as their unique musical genius.

People need to stop posting comments about a band when they have no clue what they r talking about. Jerry Cantrell wrote all but 3 alice in chains songs. Jerry is, was and always will be the heart and sole of the band. I saw them 3 times in ‘06 with william and the shows were great. I can’t wait to hear the new album.

Hey Ryan, if Layne was 80% of the band, why wasn’t Mad Season one of the greatest rock bands of all time? The synergy all the members of AIC produced couldn’t be improved. Same shit happened with RATM and Soundgarden when they decided to make Audioslave. Its never the same. I’m just glad 75% of AIC will stick with their roots, which would still make their music 100% better than 95% of today’s “rock” bands.

Daniel Flanagan | 6/14/2009, 12:42 am EST

Well, where do I start here? Alice In Chains – Best Rock band of all time? Without a doubt. Are they still Alice In Chains without the Legendary Layne Staley? Fu** Yeah! Layne’s prescence still lingers amongst the band, and always will, and despite his untimely passing, he is still a huge part of the band spiritually, and Im sure that, wherever, or whenever he may be right now, looking down on this mad rat race which he no longer has a physical prescence in, he is excitingly rubbing his hands together in anticipation, for this album to find its way into the millions of homes worldwide as it shall!

Daniel Flanagan | 6/14/2009, 12:56 am EST

continued- As a band, Alice In Chains never really got to reach their true potential, largely due to Layne’s personal issues, which was sad, but no ones fault when it really comes down to it. I just wish Layne could have found the strength to open up to the right person in those dark times, I really miss him, as I’m sure the whole band, and millions of others do too. I have absolutely no doubt that Layne would have insisted, If he could be heard, that the Alice In Chains band name live on without him, and he wouldn’t want anything but major success and good fortune for his old friends, his ex band members, and for William to carry on from his good work.

Daniel Flanagan | 6/14/2009, 1:07 am EST

In regards to their new album, I think that all you fellow Alice In Chains fans, can look forward to something really special here. Whist thay have never really received their deserved commercial success, or critical acclaim, I believe this will be the album that fully thrusts them into the spotlight. They definately wont be losing any fans…….tbc

Daniel Flanagan | 6/14/2009, 1:14 am EST

This album is going to be one of the classics. ‘Dirt’, but more complete! The new generation is really going to warm to this one. Its really going to be one of the surprise packets of the last 10 years, and I think the sales will really reflect this. Bring it on!

Daniel Flanagan | 6/14/2009, 1:23 am EST

Once again Alice In Chains shall change the face of music, and man, its so much needed. Let the talent be unleashed! Alice In Chains, The Second Coming, Rock Gods of Originality,The Masters of our time, The Best of The Best, May all those Pissy Fu** bands weep!

Jordan | 6/16/2009, 10:44 am EST

I’m thirteen and Alice in Chains is my favorite band, I haven’t heard Duvall sing but it is my opinion that this album cannot be better than any other AIC albums cuz layne isn’t on it and AIC won’t ever make any songs better or anything like man in the box, them bones, grind, again, dam that river, sea of sorrow, get born again, god am,nutshell, bleed the freak,i stay away,no excuses,we die young, would?,got me wrong, sludge factory and angry chair. I’m never going to like alice in chains wit duvall better than alice in chains wit layne but I’m buying the album anyways

iGNACIO is NACHO | 6/19/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Ah yes Alice In Chains.. What a wonderful band.. I am glad and very happy that they are back making music.. It’s just sad that they are making this sort of music without Layne Staley for obviously he is.. dead.. Rest in peace Layne.. And I dont really give a shit bout the new guy whoreshit or if they should change their band name to william duvall and the cantrells honky tonk band..who gives a shit?!..fuck that!.. as an alice in chains fan for many many many years.. As soon as their new cd hit the stores.. i’d buy their shit anyways.. Becos they kick ass homie!viva la alice in chains!hahahahahahahahahahahah aha!

duff | 6/19/2009, 5:21 pm EST

nobody can replace layne. i hope people understand that aic was LTS. laynes sister said it best, jerry can play guitar in any band but, without layne aic doesn’t exist anymore. the boys could have done better. jerry’s ego wouldn’t allow a top notch singer. the band broke up because of ego not because of laynes drug problem.

Daniel Flanagan | 6/20/2009, 8:44 pm EST

I do understand that AIC will never Quite be the same without Layne, but from what ive heard and read about their recent gigs in Australia, William Duvals voice is hauntingly similar to Laynes, and many people are saying it was the best concert they have ever been to

Daniel Flanagan | 6/20/2009, 8:49 pm EST

The music world is hanging for another sound, because lets face it, all the current sh** sucks so bad, and has for so long now, and I think AIC are going to fill that void, and really kick some ass on the worldwide touring circuit and prove they are the best!

mike | 6/24/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Can’t wait for this release.
named my kid after Layne

Brandon C | 6/27/2009, 12:09 pm EST

I’ve seen aic with william a few times, and i must say, Its not too bad. Do i like him better than layne? Of course not. No one is layne. and alice in chains is not the same alice with out layne. its a totally different alice, just like Vanhalen was a totally different van halen with hagar, and ac/dc was a totally different band with brian johnson. It can and may work, we just all hate to say good bye to what we’re used to. Change sux sometimes. I personally wasn’t a huge fan of AIC continuing with Duvall. But I am looking forward to and hoping that they prove to be just as good as they have always been

unchained | 6/27/2009, 12:22 pm EST

my only hope is that the new album isn’t full of 7 minute jam songs like degradation trip. Although i loved degradation trip, some of the songs were just a little to lengthy for me. i feel that it didnt get the attention it should have because of it. I had a hard time playing it to friends that didnt know jerry and them liking it because it took too long to get to the “good parts” if you will. they got bored and uninterested pretty fast unfortunately. I am hoping for “average alice in chains length songs” that sound a bit different from what once was but just as good or better. But i really hope i dont get board 5 mins in to a song, waiting on the “good part” and skip to the next song. But i’ll take what they dish out. I’m an AIC fan no matter what

noLayne-noChains | 7/8/2009, 2:33 pm EST

this album is destined to fail. AIC will never be original AIC. The only reason they kept the name is so Jerry can have a band with a 20 year track record.

wil duval is weakless low talent, shouldnt sing Laynes songs, and is a LOSER for not rejecting the AIC name and starting a new band.

Mike T | 7/10/2009, 2:54 am EST

I will always miss Layne, and no band is ever the same at the beginning after losing their front man…but Jerry is a genious and i have loved everything he has done!
Can’t wait to see the next chapter of this legendary band.

I seen the new AIC and thought they were great. william has a great voice. Not Layne but who is better.

rhonda | 7/18/2009, 9:47 am EST

When I first found out AIC was recording a new album with a new lead singer I was a bit skeptical and I pouted for a while because it made me miss Layne even more. Then I figured well if I gave Chris Cornells new material a listen (won’t go there) I can surely give these guys a chance. I’ve heard the new single and I really like it. I think it stays true to the old AIC style. I don’t know about everyone else but I am so desperate for something new AND good to hit the air waves. I am so sick of this garbage that is out now! 90% of the new rock they play on the radio is about being in bars watching women shake their asses and then taking them home to do whatever. If I wanted to hear that I’d listen to rap, which is why I don’t.

die young | 7/18/2009, 12:47 pm EST

Everyone needs to realize this is one of the greatest rock bands of all time .we all need them around to return us to real rock music like all the great seattle bands did.i also wish soungarden would reunite and pearl jam go back to the versus and vitalogy days their still a good band but we neef them back in the forefront.rock on aic and layne rest in peace.

sean | 7/30/2009, 4:55 pm EST

Loved AIC, loved mad season too, layne was great in both bands. i plan on owning a copy of this record, and try like hell to remain unbiased about the new vocalist. It doesnt matter what the guys call themselves – you know who they are, and thank god that they havent given up on us (the guitar hero playin, ICP lovin, karaoke/dj supportin’ gripers)(that means you) what ever happened to metal/hard rock, you may ask? if it was up your ass you’d know it. and it soon will be.

greenimage | 8/3/2009, 9:46 am EST

I am a little skeptical because Layne wrote most of their songs and has one of the best voices in rock history. It kinda sucks that the new singer tries to sing just like Layne, but I do like the other members of the band especially Cantrell. He is very talented and if this is what he wants to do I think it’s cool. Maybe they should have changed the name though, I am very unsure about this. Rest in piece Layne Staley Love you Always……

Anonymous | 8/9/2009, 5:00 am EST

I believe this to be a huge insult to the memory of Layne. I would have had no problem with Cantrell continuing as Alice in Chains had he just done the vocals himself, but to find a replacement for Layne, that is just low! Think about it, all of you who are saying you are ok with it, how would you feel if Dave Grohl and gang reunited as NIRVANA with a new singer to replace Kurt and let the new guy sing all Kurt’s songs!? A band is never the same without the original singer and, in my opinion, should always change the name because it will never be the same band. But Layne died! He did not just quit the band! You are replacing a legend who died and tarnishing his memory and legacy! Cantrell knows he will make more money by using the Name Alice in Chains and performing their old songs than to have a new name and only perform new songs. He is profiting off of Layne. What a great way to treat a dearly departed friend! If Layne could only see this, I would hope he would curse this travesty of a band!

Beard | 8/12/2009, 7:49 pm EST

Greenimage and anonymous, you two are a pair of idiots. Layne didnt do anything but sing. Cantrell and company did the majority of writing and what not. And who says that just because a band member dies they have to change their name and that its an insult it they dont? Thats just retarded. Cantrell isnt trying to profit off of Layne and the name of AIC. If anything, its Cantrell’s.

Matt | 8/13/2009, 2:08 am EST

What do you call a band with 3/4 members of Alice in Chains, including one of two singers and the primary songwriter, that sounds EXACTLY like Alice in Chains?

I’d call it Alice in Chains.
Name change my achin’ ass.

Not to shit on Layne or anything. 90% of rock out there owes him. But Cantrell is a god.

Matt | 8/13/2009, 2:13 am EST

This is NOT the same thing as replacing Kurt Cobain. Layne wasn’t the only singer and he didn’t write the songs. This is more like what happened with AC/DC, (I’m not comparing the two, but a lot of people like their old singer better apparently)

TYLER | 8/19/2009, 9:44 pm EST

cantrell aint a god, he is good but not that good. I love aic but it just aint the same without layne.

falko | 8/20/2009, 6:08 pm EST

cantrell is nothing without layne

leylee | 8/20/2009, 8:16 pm EST

Good music is good music, no matter the name of the band. Most of the rock I hear these days is just pathetic and whiney and predictable. If this album approaches any of Alice’s previous albums, regardless of who is singing, then I will listen and enjoy it. I don’t see how it’s such a slap in the face to go on without Layne, it’s not like they immediately picked up and went on without him, unless they carry on the name and make absolute crap music. If they stay true to their style, I see it more as honoring who they were. I’ve seen Jerry Cantrell live and was impressed, whether he played his own music or Alice songs. He did do most of the writing, after all. I seriously doubt anyone here actually knew Staley, or any of the other band members. If Staley’s lookin down on us from the afterlife, I’m sure he’s happy to see people still enjoying the music he helped to create, and happy to see the band carry on to keep bringing the music to the people. Layne will always be associated with Alice in Chains, and this album will only bring in new fans who will listen to the old music too as well as the new. If anything, it’s keeping his name around. Would we all be talking about him right now otherwise?

leylee | 8/20/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Oh, I cannot resist replying to the whole Kurt thing too. I am from Seattle, and I cannot tell you how SICK I am of Nirvana! Kurt Cobain’s not a great singer, not a great guitarist, and not a great lyricist. The music is okay, but amateur. I liked Nirvana when I was 14. He’s been dead for 15 years! Get over it! Sure, the band had a lot of potential, but that’s it, and they’re gone. The only reason I’m glad they were ever around is because it launched Dave Grohl’s career and influenced a few bands I like now. So, if Nirvana came back and replaced Kurt with some other guy, I really wouldn’t care. Like I said, if the music is good, I’ll listen. Talent is talent no matter what name it goes by. I admire some people, but I don’t put them on a pedestal and build a shrine and worship them.

Layne had a magic voice, that gave Jerry`s exelent lyrics and music little extra. They were dinamic duo of AIC. I hope that new singer want try to copy Layne`s singing and that he will give Jerry`s song something new and original, so i can listen them.

Layne was a great singer and with jerry’s back-up vocals the pair were gods in they’re own right there is no doubt the music was ahead of its time and took the industry by surprize with off key lyrics and guitar hooks that souinded so natural.Ive head some demo from the album and it is vintage AIC I’m excited to hear more.I went to the first layne stailey tribute in seattle at the premier in south seattle and it was sad! Layne Stailey has a huge spot in my heart!!!!

All I hear is “it won’t be the same without Layne”. I have been wishing for something new to come out from AIC for years now and suddenly the chance to hear new music arrives and people talk crap without even hearing most of the new songs? What is wrong with some people? If you are justified in your view then good for you, but I would like to think that most are more open-minded and than that. If you dislike AIC simply because they have a different singer then you are not a fan, and what the hell are you doing here anyways? Go spout your crap elsewhere. It annoys me that people just type whatever they want and do not think about it. AIC will be a little different but that could be good or it could be bad. Wait and see before jumping strait to some stupid biased conclusion.

chase | 8/30/2009, 1:30 pm EST

i will always miss layne, but this new guy is pretty good! what day does this cd come out?

Grinzolot | 9/2/2009, 7:28 pm EST

Replacement? What? These are real musicians this is in their blood, you cannot replace somethings (like the drive to play and play well) and memorys good or bad are just that, we live on no shame! I cannot imagine that Layne would want his friends and band members to fade away wasting their talent. I am a fan of one of the best rock songwriters, guitarist, and bassist and yes Layne, ever to play. I say rock out guys we need the spirit that does not quit and lay down like sheep. Some of you critics should lighten up listen to some music and get off your thrones, lol really.
ps. rock on new guy you fit right in!

dragnutz | 9/14/2009, 10:01 pm EST

ALICE IN CHAINS IS ALICE IN CHAINS!PERIOD! I am probably one of the many who would love to see and hear them again even w/out Layne. Yeah its sad he’s gone but for the band NOT to carry on would be an insult to what he started! He would be proud of the guys have done with this album. I heard some of it and it is ALICE! F… the idiots who say otherwise. THEY are the insult to Layne. Will Duvall kicks ass with the band. Layne is smilin’.

thebathroomsinger | 9/22/2009, 7:44 am EST

i loved Chains to death! but i equally like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and STP.. they’re part of the one big happy grungy family.. they are pals and they dont wanna be compared!

as for the new singer – Duvall – i am happy their music lives on! and I’m happy they’re still called AIC – else I wouldnt know even if they played in my town – and I wouldnt wanna miss that one!

Layne knew pretty well where he was headed – he didnt respect the fact that the fate of his band-mates were entwined with his – thats part of the responsibility of being in a band – so why should Cantrell ‘respect’ dead Layne who cared for no-one but himself.. he kept going for that one last kick – the best one of them all!

..remember what Cantrell says to Layne during their unplugged performance – its (not the best one but) the only concert they had done in years! who do u think was responsible for their long absence even back then – any guesses??

Brando Bandido | 9/24/2009, 4:50 am EST

Well, this album just sounds like the previous albums made by Jerry Cantrell.

truth b told | 9/25/2009, 6:17 pm EST

saw new singer for AIC at Jones Beach fronting for Velvet Revolver about 07′.. kicked their azz.. he’s awesome. wished they played another hour. aic kicks azz!

the jing | 9/28/2009, 9:47 am EST

Layne wakes up in his everlong daydream to hear a sweet rumble and grind he knows too well. Only this time he eases back in peace and signals two thumbs up to his old friends and new black brother in the front seat.
…’I've heard the samples and I love it. Thank you for saving us from Linkin Park,’ he echoes from above.

Anonymous | 9/28/2009, 5:06 pm EST

TUESDAY at 0000 | 9/29/2009, 12:34 am EST

NY Dude | 9/29/2009, 3:27 pm EST

Psyched for the new AIC release. I loved Layne, but I love AIC and I can’t wait to hear the new CD. I hope this CD sticks it to the likes of Beyonce, Mariah Carey and all those other suck faces that think they can make music. AIC rules!

Eric | 10/24/2009, 9:47 pm EST
