Recent Rolling Stone cover girl and Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester is the latest cast member of the hit CW show to make the jump into music. The actress who plays queen bee Blair Waldorf signed with Universal Republic, and plans to release her debut album this fall. According to Billboard.com, Meester describes her sound as having an “electro-pop edge” and she’s already hit the studio with producers Polow Da Don, Harvey Mason Jr. and Spencer Nezey. “I’m thrilled to be welcomed into the Universal Republic fold,” Meester said in a statement. “Their reputation for nurturing artists combined with a willingness to break new ground makes it the ultimate environment for me to enjoy making music and explore my own creative boundaries.”

Meester isn’t the only Gossip Girl to try her hand at music. Taylor Momsen, who’s only 15, has a band called Pretty Reckless that was recruited to open for the Veronicas when the Aussie sisters tour this summer. Pretty Reckless has reportedly signed with Interscope Records. And the infamous Chuck Bass, a.k.a. actor Ed Westwick, is in a Brit-pop band called the Filthy Youth. They even have a MySpace page where they cite XTC and Paul Weller as influences.

Meester, actress Blake Lively and a strategically placed ice cream cone all recently appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, and we marked the occasion with exclusive video, photos, behind-the-scene stories from the set, a look at the show’s soundtrack and much more. Plus, Rolling Stone movie critic Peter Travers, the biggest Dorota fan in New York City, previewed the series finale of Season Two. Check out all the GG goodies at our Gossip Girl hub.

I do not hook up, I fall deep | 4/24/2009, 5:51 pm EST

ENOUGH WITH EVERY ACTOR TO BE A SINGER AND EVERY SINGER WANTING TO BE AN ACTOR! This no longer feels original. At this rate, they’re gonna have to merge the Grammys and the Oscars into one award show, because nobody does one thing exclusively anymore. And the majority of them DO NOT have the talent to be double threats (I’m talking to you Joaquin Phoenix and 50 Cent). Face it, most of you will ever be the next Frank Sinatra or Barbra Streisand. So stop dreaming about having that Oscar and Grammy sitting on your shelf.

i totally agree, im so sick of these egotistical people thinking they are the best at everything… they continue to find more ways to feed their ego

everyone is electro-pop these days. just another talentless stupid girl getting songs written for her so she can sell her sex and body and whatever. it’s funny how many people you come across in your entire life that can actually sing…but since they don’t have the connections, they can’t be famous…..shame.

if she’s good then she should be signed. and her previous affiliation with fame is irrelevant.

I agree with previous comments. I’m so sick of hearing about an actor trying to get into the music industry. It’s okay for a musician to do a small cameo in a movie, but why does everyone need to be a star of a movie/show AND a band. I’m assuming that her music will be worthless crap so she can join the okay actor, horrible musician club.

You guys do know that she wanted to be a singer before an actress, and likes singing more than acting, right? You are totally jumping to conclusions, there are such things as multi talented people, and Leighton is an amazing singer and actress. If anyone who has seen her portrayal of Blair, a spoiled 5th Avenue Princess, and thought it was average, you need to re evaluate your standards. I’ve heard some of her songs, and she is actually extremely talented. Give the girl a shot, she is a great singer and actress, and unlike people who can’t do either, cough, Heidi Montag, cough, she is serious about both.

Life is unfair. John Lennon gets shot and these people get to walk around.

Her song “Birthday” is kick-ass. It really grows on you the more you play it. I love it, and I’m not ashamed to admit it!

First off, she’s a TV actor so she’s not gonna be awarded an Oscar. I think she’s really good on the show and deserves more credibility. As far as her music goes electro-pop is not my thing so I can’t really comment. Tough I can’t believe you’re comparing her to John Lennon, Frank Sinatra, or 50 cent. Good for her I guess.

Lastly, she’s really had it tough and does not seem to have an ego or come across as a brat. Both parents in prison, grew up fairly poor in Florida, she’s earned her success, all the best. Moving on.

Honestly people, why cant she be both? There ARE many people able to do both quite excellently.
STOP JUDGEING THE POOR GIRL AND SAYING SHE WANTS ATTENTION FROM THE SEX MOVIE.SHE IS IN ENOUGH PAIN AS IT IS.IT WAS HER SELFISH BOYFRIEND WHO DIDNT CARE WHAT HE DOES TO RUIN HER LIFE,AS LONG AS HE GETS MONEY FROM THE TAPE OF A FAMOUS PERSON. LEAVE THE POOR GIRL ALONE!!JUST BECAUSE THAT IS PERHAPS WHAT SOME PEOPLE DO ,DOES NOT MEAN EVERYBODY WOULD DO THAT.TO MOST PEOPLE ITS VERY EMBARRESTING, AND RUINING!!!

You know what you guys just stop being so negative

She is such a talented actress and musician and is such a great role model. She is one of 21st centurys most amazing actresses and so what she released a sex tape she is so brave that she is still acting like it never happend and still is facing the press she deserves a lot more credit then people give her for. Just love her because you now you do.
