As Rock Daily previously speculated, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson are teaming up for the 2009 Ballpark Tour. The jaunt kicks off July 2nd in Sauget, Illinois, with the trio playing minor league baseball stadiums across the country until August 15th. Tickets for the tour, which are all general admission and $67.50, begin to go on sale May 2nd. In addition to peanuts and Cracker Jacks, the tour will also allow free admission for children 14 and younger.

Dylan has long had an obsession with the National Pastime, dedicating a week of his Theme Time Radio Hour to the sport and touring baseball stadiums in 2004 with Nelson. News of the trek first spread when Joan Baez let the word slip after playing “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right” during a concert in Bloomington, Indiana. With John Mellencamp in the crowd, Baez said “Mellencamp? Are you really going to go on tour with that guy [Dylan]? Seriously, come talk to me after the show.” Mellencamp’s Website later promised a tour of minor league baseball stadiums with two major artists in tow. Check below for the current run of 2009 Ballpark Tour dates.

The grampa tour!!! HA!! That’s funny. Listening to Dylan last night, Am looking forward to Together Through Life. Still the best.

Anonymous | 4/25/2009, 1:16 pm EST

Okay, guys… take a step forward if you are a living legend and a true American icon… not so fast John Mellencamp!

Okay, guys… take a step forward if you are a living legend and a true American icon… not so fast John Mellencamp!

Reliable Source | 4/25/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Hopefully John Mellencamp gets trampled at a horse track in Kentucky before the Fresno date.

ric | 4/25/2009, 6:52 pm EST

what is with the ‘take a step forward’ comment? Why is it important to separate legend/icon from whatever else?

shank | 4/25/2009, 9:00 pm EST

Anyone who heard Mellencamp’s latest album wouldn’t doubt his status as one of america’s greats.
It’s far better than Dylan’s last couple albums.
I’m hoping Together Through Life is half as good.

dude | 4/25/2009, 9:59 pm EST

skank you need a hearing check bob dylans last any album is better than any mellencamp album but at the same time you cant compare them they are very different and everything they are aobut is on different sides of the spectrum – love em for what they are not for what yo want them to be

eric t | 4/25/2009, 10:00 pm EST

Mellencamp will blow Dylan out of the dugout in a live setting. Dylan might be an icon, but he’s been very disappointing lately in the live setting. Mellencamp can still bring it. His latest album has been his best in years.

Joel | 4/25/2009, 11:55 pm EST

Mellencamp live, and on record, is a wonderful thing. The guy is a legend in every sense of the word, and anyone who doesn’t think so knows nothing about music. Get an effing clue.

troutisdead | 4/26/2009, 3:04 am EST

John mellencamp sucks a fat ass dick. He has no place in a show featuring two legends and he should probably kill himself. Fun story. John Mellencamp gives money to the IU soccer team. John Mellencamps son plays soccer. John Mellencamp puts the administrators and the soccer coaches in a ethical dillemma regarding whether or not his son can play on the team. The story ends with John Mellencamps son playing on the team. John Mellencamp is a piece of shit and his music is the main influence for shitty country music that plagues the radio every day. Shame on Bob Dylan and shame on Willie Nelson for condoning the act of an “musician” whose band sucks dick and whose lyrics are all about shit that has already been sung about.

Ross Grainger | 4/26/2009, 8:18 am EST

The trouble with Bob touring with Nelson and Mellencamp is that it will tend to highlight his country music side when Bob plays and sings in a variety of styles and genres. Nelson and Mellencamp are rooted and limited to country while Bob Dylan is the sum total of the many masks and guises he has worn throughout his life.

Matt | 4/26/2009, 9:59 am EST

Their not coming to Detroit! What the Hell!

Joe Puma | 4/26/2009, 12:09 pm EST

I am a big fan of Bob ,Willie, and John, but I’m also disappointed that they have set the ticket prices so high.If you could afford to pay the $67.50 and get up close that’s great, but way back in a general admission show for that price is ridiculous.Of all the performers setting up tour stops,I thought these performers would take their fans’ financial considerations into account in this rotten economy,’guess not. They may be in for a big surprise when they see the under-performing gate receipts, and that’s on them, because a fine idea would have worked if the prices were more fan-friendly.

Dave | 4/26/2009, 1:30 pm EST

The last Dylan tour in minor league stadiums was pretty bad. His band is ok, but he has absolutely no voice anymore. His singing is inaudible.

Sorry Bob, love ya man, but not again.

Chase | 4/26/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Mellencamp’s son does not play soccer, that’s total BS. His son’s are not even college age yet. Quite spreading lies.

And $67.50, considering they have to pay three separate bands and travel three separate bands across the country for two months, isn’t that bad. That’s about $22.50 per band, and since it’s general admission, if you get there early, you’ll get a good seating location.

Ryan | 4/26/2009, 1:42 pm EST

Mellencamp said on his Web site that he’ll be playing for 75 minutes during this tour, and he will highlight his old hits, songs of his latest album “Life, Death, Love and Freedom” and some brand new songs that haven’t been recorded yet from his upcoming 2010 album, “No Better Than This,” which will again be produced by T Bone Burnett and be recorded during this tour.

So you are going to hear brand new material from Mellencamp that he hasn’t even recorded yet at these shows.

And whoever said that Mellencamp is a country act — get a clue. This is a rock artist, not a country artist. Does “I Need a Lover” or “What If I Came Knocking” sound country to you? C’mon. Wake up.

Rabbitbunny | 4/26/2009, 3:50 pm EST

I LOVE BOBBY AND JOHNNY! Dylan and Mellencamp are two of America’s best rockers because they believe things can get better even though times are hard for honest men blowing in the wind. With Obama in D.C., WE CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT
ROCK & ROLL AND AMERICA AGAIN. PEACE!

Nathan | 4/26/2009, 4:46 pm EST

Hopefully they’ll add more dates.

Infidel | 4/26/2009, 6:05 pm EST

Outside Dylan’s latest record being his worst on record this tour is kick axe.

Billy | 4/26/2009, 7:09 pm EST

RE The person blasting on John and his supposed son:

John gave the lead donation to build IU Football a indoor practice facility in 1992. Maybe soccer uses it too, I don’t know. The John Mellencamp that plays soccer for IU is John’s nephew, not his son. The nephew didn’t grow up around Bloomington, I think he is from Cincy. He was a star soccer player in his high school and has been a good player for us here at IU. There have been a bunch of stories lately about John’s son, Hud, who just won the Indiana region Golden Gloves boxing tourney. John’s a visible supporter of the IU Football and Basketball teams, but I don’t think he has ever been much of a fan of soccer.

John is seen all the time in Bloomington, at the mall, riding his motorcycles, out with his wife and kids are restaurants. My older brother was in school around 2000 or 2001 when he played a free show outside on the lawn one afternoon when the kids came back, like 10,000 people showed up.

Gitch | 4/27/2009, 10:42 am EST

TROUTISDEAD……..U SUCK!!!

Travis | 4/27/2009, 3:48 pm EST

One minor problem with the story. The concert in question with Joan Baez could not have been in Bloomington, IN. Assuming you’re talking about a recent show…either there was a secret show that nobody told me about, ha, or you’ve got it wrong.

Travis | 4/27/2009, 4:03 pm EST

Whoops, nevermind, they’re referring to Joan’s solo show in March in Bloomington. Sadly I was unable to make that one. Sigh.

Aslan | 4/27/2009, 7:21 pm EST

YYYYYAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!! !!

E. Baker | 4/28/2009, 12:15 am EST

Mellencamp is exceptional.

jim | 4/28/2009, 9:09 am EST

Why don’t they play the Mudhens Stadium in Toledo?? Bob and Willie are true Giants, every American should see them.

Jon | 4/28/2009, 10:25 am EST

Jolene Mountain | 4/28/2009, 11:21 am EST

Dylan, Mellencamp, Nelson, How can you go wrong. From Highway 61 through My heroes have always been cowboys to the longest days, It can’t miss

john g hutchens | 4/28/2009, 7:23 pm EST

I’ve seen Mellencamp live with his band twice and they kick ass. Willie and Bob are both has beens to me. Bob, Pick up the acoustic for a couple of songs. Willie, go back to your old singing style if you can. And you need new blood in you band. I love all 3 artists, but live in 2009, my money’s on John.

Dak | 4/28/2009, 7:25 pm EST

Dylan is terrible live. I saw his last tour and his voice is unrecognizable, all he did was stand behind his keyboards and growl. A huge disappointment-even though his band is tight, he really needs to stop touring.

Anonymous | 4/29/2009, 6:38 am EST

Bob and Willie are the has beens!!!!!!!!!!!! Hahahah. Thats a good one John Mellencamp I didn’t think you knew how to use a computer. Bob’s about to have a #1 album, that makes 4 straight classics. Has been?

Hunter | 4/29/2009, 9:53 am EST

I will be seeing Bob in concert!!!!!

Jungleland2 | 4/29/2009, 11:06 am EST

Dylan and Nelson are legends, but both are past thier prime as live acts. Not to take anything away from their past (or even recent records) I saw Willie ten years ago and he was good for a 35 minute show – mostly a medley of his hits, but he looked tierd. Saw Dylan last year at an indoor show and he was so removed from the crowd that people started to ignore the band and many left. his voice is gone for doing songs other than his new ones, and he plays a synth keyboard the entire night (one song with guitar in a two hours show)

Melencamp has a new band of young Indiana bar band hot-shots. I think he will steal the show

michelle | 4/29/2009, 4:50 pm EST

no florida. :(

johnny engle | 4/29/2009, 8:14 pm EST

all the trash talking on these great american artist is shit! shame on those who have disrespected them! all three of these men hold a place of honor in the musical history of our country! we are culturally a better country because of all three of them! so please have a little bit of respect and don’t embarrass yourselves?

Dave Cheboygan | 4/29/2009, 8:23 pm EST

No Michigan dates???? BOB IS STILL THE BEST!!!!!!

Chad | 4/29/2009, 9:12 pm EST

Dylan does NOT necessarily suck live. At his best he is GREAT live but that is maybe a 1 in 5 chance you’ll catch him on a good night. From what I understand I got lucky!I have seen Mellencamp too if he sticks to what got him here he is great too but he spends too much time trying to pretend he is young and relevant.

the stranger | 4/29/2009, 10:55 pm EST

I be at CASHMAN on the 12 AUG YEEEhaaaaaaaa!.

Zorin | 4/29/2009, 11:08 pm EST

Reit | 5/4/2009, 12:49 pm EST

You guys are soooo lucky. None in Canada! Saw Dylan live in Vancouver and last year in Edmonton. Greatest show! Great voice…great band…great man!

Dylanesque | 5/7/2009, 10:18 am EST

They are playing literally in my backyard in Jersey. The ticket price is dirt cheap and you can bring a child under 14 with you for free! Bob Dylan is the one for me and I have always wanted to see Willie Nelson and John is also a great entertainer. I have no complaints about this show that is for sure. To be able to see Bob Dylan again this year is just plain wonderful. I do not care if his voice is croaky or however people want to describe it to be there among this genius is all that matters to me. I love the new album, glad it is #1 and hopefully he will get a grammy for it.
July 23rd can’t get here soon enough for me!!!!!

Jeff | 5/21/2009, 7:41 am EST

How about a Florida date?

dylan fan | 7/6/2009, 8:47 pm EST

I saw the concert July 2 in Sauget, IL. The venue sucked, but all were great, Mellencamp especially. His band is always great! This is the 6th time I’ve seen Dylan and he has been great and terrible. I’d say he was a little of each this time. His song sellection was good as was JM’s. Nelson was entertaining, but I’m not much of a fan of his. It was a great night out in the cool air… I highly recommend it for the price. Nice evening.

John | 7/7/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Got my tix to New Britain, in my backyard. Love all three. And my three kids can come for free.
Of course, if Dylan tries to play an electric guitar we will all boo him off the stage just like at Newport.

Joe Gillis | 7/13/2009, 10:15 am EST

Bob Dylan and his band is fantastic, nowhere near an end of some prime live life, not even close. Willie was very good and so was Mellencamp. Bob had a new steel guitar player. if you plan on booing Bob, stay home, moron.

All this crap about how these artists suck live –
Does no one see the musically historical significance here?
History in the making people. enjoy it for what is is.

going to park the truck early and hitch a ride to the stadium (new britain) so we can do a little tail-gating! Can’t wait to see Bob and Willy and John- i wish they were all doing one show together!

Allentown Reviewer | 7/15/2009, 4:30 pm EST

The Wy-os were very good and entertaining and had a great sound.

Willie Nelson had a great and entertaining set.

Mellencamp had a very energetic set which sounded great and got the biggest applause with many people screaming for an encoure.

Now, let me preface this by saying I’m a huge Dylan fan: This was absolutely the worst and most uncomfortable performance I’ve ever sat through. First off, the music was very tight, however incredibly too loud. I’m 24, and definitely not too old. There were people next to me who had napkins and fingers in their ears and they were all relatively long.

Dylan, while I was told not to expect much was the worst I could’ve possibly Imagined. You couldn’t understand a WORD he said and for all of those Dylan Super Lovers who say “you cant understand dylan” bullshit. You ever hear those comedy tapes of deaf people singing? This was a hundred times worse than that. Just have your dog growl into the microphone loudly and thats what I and ten thousand people experienced last night. Even a song like Highway 61 You could make out “God said to abraham” then just a bunch more growls. And the worst part is, 75 percent of the crowd walked out on him because they couldn’t stand it either.

The best quote I heard of the show was from another angry fan: The reason they turned out the lights was so that Dylan couldn’t see everybody leaving.

andshewas | 7/16/2009, 1:25 pm EST

I just won tickets to the 7/21 show in RI – so EXCITED! :)

Tim | 7/19/2009, 2:11 pm EST

Anyone know if cameras are allowed for these shows?

DOCTOR JERRY | 7/21/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Okay, I’m a member of the hardcore Sixties generation. Born in 1948, went to college in 1967–I’ve been influenced by Bob Dylan for the past forty-plus years. He’s a unique genius with a unique place in our society. I’m happy to say that two nights ago while visiting my 39 year old daughter upstate I took her to the Dylan/Nelson/Mellencamp concert at a stadium in Syracuse. After all these years I was seeing Dylan live for the very first time. I’ll be 61 next month. Great show. Willie Nelson wins the voice contest hands-down. The man has a touch of magic in his voice like nobody else. Mellencamp at age 57 looks thirty years younger and gives an energized performance. And, yes, Bob Dylan’s voice has now turned to gravel and it’s true that you can barely decipher a word he says. [In the long tune titled "Senor" that was literally the only word I could clearly hear.] But then again, I can barely hear most lyrics at these outdoor concerts anyway. Dylan’s speaker system was way too loud but he performed well and the back-up musicians were great. It was a powerful sound from a living legend and something I’ll never forget. I’m glad I went.

jason | 8/15/2009, 9:44 am EST

no florida is right ugh…and dylan was the worst concert ive ever seen…if he has good nights i havent seen one live personally.
