Depeche Mode Shut Down Hollywood Blvd for “Kimmel”

4/24/09, 8:29 am EST

Depeche Mode’s Thursday night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live drew more than 12,000 people to Los Angeles’ famed corner of Hollywood and Vine, the largest crowd gathered there since the show first launched in 2003 with a performance by Coldplay. The band played seven songs in just under 45 minutes, including “Wrong,” the first single off their latest album, Sounds Of The Universe, along with fan favorites “Personal Jesus,” “Enjoy The Silence” and the set’s closing number “Never Let Me Down Again,” during which singer Dave Gahan led a sea of Depeche devotees to reach for the sky before humbly bro-hugging his right-hand man of nearly 30 years, Martin Gore.

Although the band wasn’t scheduled to hit the stage until 7:30, by 2:00 p.m.hundreds had lined up in hopes of securing prime spots in one of four viewing areas (celebrities like Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Jared Leto and Christina Applegate along with five of this season’s American Idol rejects gawked from a side-stage position). But no matter where you stood within the four-block radius cordoned off for the show, every fan got a clear, hi-def look at the band courtesy of a 20-foot-tall video wall and five additional giant LCD screens. “It was the biggest outdoor concert we’ve ever done,” said Jimmy Kimmel Live music booker Scott Igoe. “There’s no doubt Depeche Mode has a strong and loyal following in Los Angeles. We gave away 10,000 wristbands in one day and estimate a good 2,000 more people just showed up. You could see and hear Dave Gahan from five blocks away!”

Dozens of LAPD officers were on hand to clear walkways and keep the peace, some of whom are old enough to recall the near-riot that broke out in 1990 when Depeche Mode appeared at a West Hollywood record store to promote the album Violator (15,000 fans showed up for the signing). But with the exception of a fence that nearly came down when one group of spectators was moved, and, according to a witness, a street fight involving former Nine Inch Nails bassist Danny Lohner, there were only three arrests in total, each for illegal vending said a public information officer for the LAPD.

Set list:

“Wrong”
“Personal Jesus”
“Walking in My Shoes”
“Come Back”
“Peace”
“Enjoy the Silence”
“Never Let me Down Again”

wish I could have gotten to go. I did watch Kimmel last night, though, and their new album is fantastic. highly reccomended.

Lily | 4/24/2009, 10:38 am EST

I saw the fence incident and it was all bull.
All those fans wanted to do was watch a FREE show and some a-hole decided they couldn’t watch for FREE and covered up the spot. That is why the fans got upset.
LAPD and those guys putting up the fence were jerks.

GuyOnTheAir | 4/24/2009, 11:06 am EST

Yes, the “fence incident” was a load of crap. People were just wanting to stand peacefully on the public sidewalk, until officers decided that wasn’t allowed, and moved people by trying to run them over with horses. Officers shouted and yelled at people, and lied to them, promising them entrance to the show if they went to a certain area. If you went, you were denied access. Officers appeared to be in a bad mood, and looking for trouble.

kenny heggem | 4/24/2009, 11:22 am EST

too bad they got a total of what, 5 minutes on Kimmel? They could have cut the interviews with actors from 24 and Fighting to showcase the biggest underground English act of over 30 years. Biggest show Kimmel has had, and the band has 5 minutes on the actual show….really?

JLC | 4/24/2009, 11:42 am EST

I watched last night and was totally jealous!!!! I don’t care for Kimmel but the performance at one point looked like he was a little lost!!! I love DM!!!

LadyT | 4/24/2009, 12:20 pm EST

I was lucky enough to win VIP tickets to this event & was lucky enough to be about 20′ from the stage! This event was electrifying & Gahan is even sexier then before

Terri renfro | 4/24/2009, 12:21 pm EST

We were there! It was great. For the record, the LAPD in our area handled themselves well and were very polite. But then so were most of the fans in our area. Thx for the free show.

DM Fan Who Attended Show | 4/24/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Yeah, I saw the fence incident, too. What control freaks! They should have just let the people outside the fence watch the show. Finally some cops riding horses showed up and completely cleared the area.

bbb | 4/24/2009, 12:53 pm EST

dave sounded horrible, i wasn’t impressed at all.

Rafa | 4/24/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Fence incident wasn’t anything. The cops are under order to keep the sidewalks clear so keep them clear. Just because you “peacefully” want to do something doesn’t mean you can go against the rules set by the city. What next? I peacefully want to fondle your sister so I should be able to HAHAHA. Stop trying to get one over on everyone and just follow the rules which are there to keep all safe.

The coverage on TV was a joke and maybe an insult to DM fans. I bet if they announced the whole concert on TV their ratings would have been way much higher.

Anonymous | 4/24/2009, 2:43 pm EST

I saw their 1993 Faith And Devotion tour… One of the best live shows I’ve ever attended.

Los Angelista | 4/24/2009, 2:53 pm EST

It was a fantastic show — Depeche Mode totally knows how to handle business! There should be a picture of them next to the phrase “Rock God”.

futant | 4/24/2009, 3:02 pm EST

They continue to be beyond any ordinary band. First time I ever saw them was at the Rose Bowl in ,88 and they are still going strong!

can’t wait Thank You my DM for the
free show !

The Hater | 4/24/2009, 3:21 pm EST

Why aren’t they in the Rock Hall?

Because the Baby Boomer establishment, including Rolling Stone, hate what they dismiss as ’synth-pop’. It has to be the same blues-oriented rawk’n'roll to be ‘real’ music… their loss.

Rickydz | 4/24/2009, 5:05 pm EST

I was there when they first began, before budwiser and jimmy kimmel. Back then it was magical listening to them while my mom gave me a reach around for bong hits. Times have changed.

Black Hole Sun | 4/24/2009, 6:02 pm EST

Wrong sucks. It sounds like a second-rate Personal Jesus. Haven’t listened to the album, but it better compensate for the awful lead single. Violator is a very hard album to top.

Lediable | 4/24/2009, 6:34 pm EST

I was there… Snuck in a big bottle of rum and crashed an interview on channel 7. It was great!!

David K. | 4/24/2009, 6:55 pm EST

Nothing like the free show at the Roxy for the Exciter album release. We got cheesy this time because it was straight publicity(tv show&hotel)…can’t blame the band though, it’s the money

Lothy | 4/24/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Go Danny GO!

Imp | 4/25/2009, 2:03 am EST

Dave sounds good, but could have used a little more reverb.I’m sure Beyonce could spare some. She had enough on Letterman to fill the Grand Canyon 10 times!!

Marcel Koury | 4/25/2009, 1:13 pm EST

DM lives!!!

Arka Gdynia | 4/25/2009, 6:46 pm EST

The show was great!

Svetoslava | 4/26/2009, 5:02 am EST

Great performance and Great new album!!! :)

Pam | 4/26/2009, 3:26 pm EST

This was a great performance and “Personal Jesus” is a powerful live track. I love the new album. DM goes back to some great synth sounds from earlier albums without losing the connection to something contemporary. My favourite song is “Come Back”, it´s one of the most passionate and darkest highlights. DM has left a footprint in the musical universe.

Lee Harvey | 4/26/2009, 6:29 pm EST

How many more must die for GOP lies?

Alexis | 4/26/2009, 7:06 pm EST

I want one of those “Girl Gahan Wild” shirts!!!

maria | 4/27/2009, 3:18 am EST

you can get girls gahan wild shirts if you look up “slickmode” on myspace. He is the person behind them.

amy | 4/27/2009, 10:56 am EST

I would have given anythign to be at that show, but I’m really looking forward to seeing them at red rocks from the 2nd row baby! If you haven’t gotten Sounds of the Universe yet I highly recommend it. just like every DM album its new, creative, and inventive and awesome! And if your a devotee get the box set, its amazing :)

christian | 4/29/2009, 6:41 pm EST
