After 45 million votes were cast Tuesday evening, Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai became the victims of American Idol’s double elimination last night, leaving Allison Iraheta as the sole woman remaining in the competition. Adam Lambert, Iraheta, Kris Allen, Danny Gokey and Matt Giraud will battle it out next week as we inch closer to the end of Season Eight. (Check out photos of Season Eight’s Top Eight to the End of the Line.)
A reminder from Season Seven hit the stage during the elimination show: second-place finisher and outstretched-hand-singer David Archuleta, who performed “Touch My Hand” (seriously, he has a song with this hilariously ironic title) off his self-titled debut album. When asked to give bottom-two singers Desai and Iraheta advice, Archuleta turned into a ray of sunshine, assuring all the hopefuls that there is indeed life after Idol. He’ll be touring with Demi Lovato soon, so maybe he doesn’t mind that his onetime adversary David Cook collected a platinum plaque when he appeared on the show this season.
But first, the Top Seven covered onetime RS Artist to Watch Lykke Li’s “I’m Good, I’m Gone” for their Ford commercial (thanks to Idolator for reminding us). They also danced a Paula Abdul-choreographed routine (and didn’t even bother to pretend they were singing live) and the behind the scenes footage provided an opportunity for the show to play Paula’s “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow,” a song from her album that never seemed to materialize. Lil Rounds got to dance, but was swiftly axed immediately afterward, and then came the disco medley, performed by two divas in heinous dresses — Freda Payne and Thelma Houston — and one guy who probably shouldn’t be singing live anymore (KC of KC and the Sunshine Band).
When it came time to finalize the bottom three there was a scary moment when everyone realized Iraheta was at risk of going home — Matt Giraud is a strong competitor, but had the judges wasted their “Save” on him and let Allison get cut, it would have been quite a scene. Rock Daily predicts (read: hopes) for a Kris Allen, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta final three. And we’re glad to see Lil Rounds put out of her misery: after a promising start, she had one of the most unpleasant Idol runs in the show’s history.
