Lollapalooza Confirms Jane’s Addiction, Depeche Mode, The Killers and Tool for ‘09 Fest

Jane’s Addiction, Beastie Boys, the Killers, Depeche Mode, Tool and current Rolling Stone cover stars Kings of Leon will headline 2009’s Lollapalooza Festival, taking place at Chicago’s Grant Park on August 7-9th. Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, TV on the Radio, Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend and many more will also perform at the Windy City fest.

All six headliners had long been rumored to play this year’s Lollapalooza, but none seemed more fated than the reunited Jane’s Addiction, whose lead singer Perry Farrell helped found the festival in 1991, when the band performed at the inaugural roving Lolla festival. “The mighty Jane’s Addiction returns to Lolla after 18 years — meeting up with our pals the Beastie Boys and Depeche Mode, offering the best of the freshies the Killers and Kings of Leon, and paying honor to one of our greatest inspirations, Lou Reed,” Perry Farrell said in a statement. Farrell’s proclamation isn’t entirely accurate: Jane’s Addiction also played the 2003 Lollapalooza, but that was without bassist Eric Avery.

Some more “freshies” that will perform at Lolla include Band of Horses, Santigold, Bon Iver, Silversun Pickups, Arctic Monkeys, Bat For Lashes, Deerhunter, Lykke Li, Asher Roth, the Airborne Toxic Event and pretty much every band we’ve ever labeled as Breaking. Veterans like Ben Harper and Relentless7, Thievery Corporation, Neko Case, Ben Folds, STS9 and Gomez are also on the bill.

Unlike most recession-minded music festivals this summer, Lollapalooza is not offering any payment plans for ticket buyers. However, a number of advance three-day passes are available on the Lollapalooza site now for $190. When that allotment sells out, the Regular Passes will be priced at $205.

Boner | 4/21/2009, 4:09 pm EST

How much will they charge for just a pass to see Tool?

Robert | 4/21/2009, 4:53 pm EST

I’m glad to see The Killers are part of the line up

Lou!! | 4/21/2009, 5:49 pm EST

Stellar rooster.

Lou Reed’s appearance surely is a precursor to a Velvet Underground reunion. You know, the most radical otherworldly American band from the 60s.

Kims Deeler | 4/21/2009, 6:29 pm EST

Gasp

dude | 4/21/2009, 6:35 pm EST

i hope lou reed plays some velvet underground songs.

Jamie | 4/21/2009, 7:00 pm EST

That is a truely brilliant line up!! You are very lucky if you are going to this. Thise who have not seen Depeche Mode live will be in for a treat. Also check out White Lies, Glasvegas and Federico Aubele.

Johnny | 4/21/2009, 9:42 pm EST

oh yeah ben folds is playing
he is my idol

Arch Stanton | 4/22/2009, 12:22 am EST

Ive seen Tool four times. Maynard apprecietes what he has like nobody before. He could be bagging grocereies if it wasnt for Adam Jones. Its too bad Perry allows his type to represent such a great festival. Maynard……dont’t talk to the crowd, act better and so on. sad. Wish Cobain was around to put the passion back into Rock n roll. Long Live Cobain…..

carney | 4/22/2009, 12:56 am EST

This lineup quivers in the shadow of the mighty mountain that was Coachella ‘09.

T-Rev | 4/22/2009, 3:20 am EST

Hey Carney…You in a time warp? This IS the ‘09 lineup! Or are you just kinda…not really that smart?

former tool fan | 4/22/2009, 3:56 am EST

As “boner” was an indication, the iq level of lollapalooza attendees and performers just dropped 10 points thanks to Tool’s inclusion. How many bands will get heckled by idiotic tool fans, and lots of yelling of tool preceded by four letter words. Before Cobain, Perry was just as if not more passionate. Maynard isnt passionate because he knows how awful tool shows can be, mostly because of their fans being such morons.

Last year | 4/22/2009, 8:47 am EST

This is one of the weaker lineups lolla has had. Especially when you compare it to the likes of last year (Radiohead, RATM, NIN, Wilco, Raconteurs, Kanye, Gnarles Barkley, Lupe Fiasco, Gogol Bordello, Black Keys, Devotchka, Saul Williams, Flogging Molly, Ting Tings, Brand New, Explosions in the sky) I could go on, but you get the point.

Pat Hundley | 4/22/2009, 9:02 am EST

You know Mike’s Pawn Shop will be there too….gonna be too awesome this year.

futant | 4/22/2009, 11:46 am EST

seriously???The notion that all TOOL fans are idiots and that MJK is a prick is hillarious.I have been to numerous shows all of which were very positive in all aspects. Also its funny that u believe that somehow the ghost of Cobain would save live music when he himself said as soon as they acheived any sort of success that their live shows were shit,he did not like the audiences and felt like he should be punching in & out on a time card like a fuckin 9 to 5 job.& those are quotes!

Tommy | 4/22/2009, 12:54 pm EST

I’m SO pumped for this line up. Top to bottom its got something for everyone. Also, quit complaining about TOOL they are about to bring Grant park to it’s knees!

nessagramarye | 4/22/2009, 2:46 pm EST

Why is there so much animosity…or whatever is the issue…toward TOOL? I could have speculated, but that would be rude. I wouldn’t even have bothered to check the list out if I hadn’t seen names like TOOL, Jane’s Addiction, and Lou Reed.

Mario | 4/23/2009, 3:49 am EST

needs more hip hop. At least TWISTA.

boris johnson | 4/23/2009, 5:05 am EST

i like music, in fact i really like musical chairs, maybe beastie boys will do some party games because they fight for the right to play pass the parcel!!! rock’n roll

Snaves | 4/23/2009, 9:02 am EST

CAGE THE ELEPHANT!!! Amazing band. Wish I didn’t live 6 states away.

rothbury is better | 4/23/2009, 10:36 am EST

this has to be one of the lamest line ups ever… if anyone is smart they will go to rothbury festival 09!

andy | 4/23/2009, 11:51 am EST

Animal Collective, Crystal Castles, Beastie Boys, Thievery Corporation, The Birdman, Snoop, TV on the Radio, Band of Horses, Of Montreal, Fleet Foxes, Santigold,Dan Auerbach, Cold War Kids PLUS MSTRKRFT, Hercules and Love Affair, and Animal Collective DJing!!!!!!!

How can anyone not be excited for this?? If you don’t like Tool then check out one of these bands.

richard hurtz | 4/23/2009, 12:30 pm EST

i like warhorse

rian | 4/23/2009, 3:44 pm EST

Lou Reed is the man sweet jane is a great cut. The only good thing Andy Warhol ever had a hand in.

Arch Stanton | 4/23/2009, 4:07 pm EST

for the idiot who said Cobain must puch a time clock before he performed…..Why Not. Maynard of Tool just turned his back that last time I saw them abd practically quit on us. Rather have a guy plying for little reason than some monkey Maynord thinking he is so coool so acknowledge how lucky he is. F….. him straight up. No Adam Jones…..No Maynard. Can you see Maynard baggging groceries not facing the old ladies buying the apple sauce!!!!!!!!

asdf | 4/23/2009, 6:48 pm EST

HA HA! Everyone look how dumb T-Rev is… Carney was talking about Coachella, not Lolla. Must be caught in an idiot-warp.

George | 4/25/2009, 3:27 pm EST

I’m familiar with Lollapalooza. Been to many of the traveling ones over the years and once two years ago in Chicago. This is the best Lollapalooza line up of all time. Animal C, all the djs are the best right now and the artist dj sets look top notch, KOL, Lou Reed, Decemberist, Of montreal, Jane’s, Depeche… wish i could be there

Dillon | 7/22/2009, 12:22 am EST

The Killers and Kings of Leon are my two favorite bands! I wish I could be there
