Jonas Brothers Unveil Stark and Sunny “Lines, Vines And Trying Times” Cover

4/21/09, 11:51 am EST

That’s no Abercrombie & Fitch advertisement — according to the Jonas Brothers’ official fan site and the band’s pre-order page, it’s the cover for the JoBros’ new album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, out June 15th. While the trio’s previous album, A Little Bit Longer, put the band in suits and a rain-soaked fluorescent-bulb-lit cityscape, Lines, Vines finds the casual Jonas crew leaning over what it is undoubtedly a pick-up truck. Essentially, they did a reverse Kings of Leon. These are “trying times,” as the title of the album and our wallets suggest, so the boys have scaled back on the gloss for something earthier.

“The title is a bit of poetry we came up with on the set for the TV show,” Nick Jonas told Rolling Stone for our Spring Music Preview. “Lines are something that someone feeds you, whether it’s good or bad. Vines are the things that get in the way of the path that you’re on, and trying times — well, obviously we’re younger guys, but we’re aware of what’s going on in the world and we’re trying to bring some light to it.”

In a recent conference call, the band made no secret as to who has influenced this record, with the name “Elvis Costello” mentioned six times and Prince called out four times. “This new album for us I wouldn’t say it’s a big jump but it definitely is a progression in our music and a growth for us. We’re very excited about this new album,” Joe Jonas said. “It feels like just a good growth in our music and it has a lot of more kind of horns in the record and a lot more strings. Also there’s more to the music rather than just a typical kind of relationship song.”

Wow! These guys are a lot deeper than I thought! I guess I had them pegged all wrong. Thanks for clearing this up Jonas Brothers!

guitar_davey | 4/21/2009, 12:28 pm EST

By the way, is it just me or does their emblem look an awful lot like the old Warner brothers logo?

Denton | 4/21/2009, 12:46 pm EST

RS, we would never have mistaken that for an A&F catalog cover. They’re not naked and making out.

Anonymous | 4/21/2009, 12:51 pm EST

If they are truly serious about breaking out of the teenybopper mould, into fully accepted ‘real artists’, this album cover is a HUGE step in the wrong direction.

This is not a cover a serious artist would put out. It’s still the type of pinup album cover than caters to 12 year old girls who like to flick their buttons, while daydreaming about Nick Jonas.

Swingline | 4/21/2009, 1:05 pm EST

It’s like one of those magic-eye pictures.

The longer you look at it, the more you’d like to see if you can fit your head into a garbage disposal while it’s still running.

Must we..... | 4/21/2009, 1:23 pm EST

Must we hear about the Jobros every move from RS? Really?

Who cares about their version of “trying times” when the Disney machine makes off like fat rats on the backs of the JoBros and the likes of their good friend Hannah Montana, aka Miley Cirus?

It doesn’t make me take them any more seriously, that’s for sure.

Kevin the Robot | 4/21/2009, 1:34 pm EST

They’re bending over so Mickey Mouse can take them from behind.

Yakof Smirnoff | 4/21/2009, 2:49 pm EST

Let me guess, Rolling Stone will have them on the cover the week of June 15th?

And why is the Jonas brother on the right squinting? Isn’t the sun behind them?

jblover | 4/21/2009, 3:38 pm EST

the jonas brothers are gods !!

guitar_davey | 4/21/2009, 4:37 pm EST

I don’t believe in god.

Kevin | 4/21/2009, 4:49 pm EST

I think they those asses look like that becuse Mikey Mouse is pointing at gun up their asses

Revolver | 4/21/2009, 4:55 pm EST

I think real progression for the Jonas Brothers would be getting laid for starters. Go f**k some girls…or guys…whatever is your style! :D

jebeal | 4/21/2009, 5:10 pm EST

The Jonas Brother on the far right is squinting because he’s realizing just how painful that album title is going to be when he doesn’t have the brain of a twelve year old anymore. He’s the Self-Aware Jonas.

LizzieLemonic | 4/21/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Looking forward to this! – they are great guys. Fine young musicians & really charismatic performers.

kirby merrill | 4/21/2009, 11:05 pm EST

Kristen | 4/21/2009, 11:10 pm EST

i’m really excited for this album. i think with each album they show more maturity and deeper lyrics. “Also there’s more to the music rather than just a typical kind of relationship song.” EXCITING.

nick_rox23 | 4/22/2009, 6:16 am EST

Anonymous | 4/22/2009, 9:30 am EST

the jonas brothers can suck the collective balls of humanity if their feeling tough times. tell them to stop using peoples real tough times to market products to them that they cant afford.

douche patrol | 4/22/2009, 10:11 am EST

wow, these guys just set off a 5 alarm douche fire.

if these guys are so great as RS makes them out to be, how come no one over the age of 14 (unless they also listen to N’Sync still) knows any of their songs?

How is anyone supposed to take them seriously with a lame pin-up cover like that? I can’t wait until these guys fall into the abyss of Ryan Cabrera/boy-band has-beenism.

TeddyB | 4/22/2009, 10:49 am EST

Holy sh*t I hope these guys’ 15 minutes is up before my daughter grows up and asks me to buy her their albums. The day I buy her a Jonas Brothers CD is the day the world stops turning. More embarrassing than buying a Michael Bolton album.

Rhonda | 4/22/2009, 11:09 am EST

This album is going to rock!!Joe is so cute and funny.Alot more music is kind of in a way what I’m looking forward to.And their cute voices.I can’t wait until June 15th.I’m going to get up on June 15th and make my grandparents take me to buy their CD.LOL!!I love these guys and their really making it big in music.Their also really good boys cuz their purity rings. But they did say I think it was on AMAs that just because they were purity rings doesn’t make them any better then anyone else and their not perfect.I love you Joe!!

dude | 4/22/2009, 12:51 pm EST

Leave “trying times” to geniuses like Bob Dylan. The Jonas Brothers are nothing but another Hanson…and even they haven’t had a bigger hit than “MmmBop”……(or whatever the hell it was called.)

Rachel | 4/22/2009, 12:56 pm EST

I think that altough the music that these guys make has been stereotyped into that for “tweens” however the songs that they write how such powerful lyrics, for instance Nicks song A Little Bit Longer. Whilst the rest provide a feel good factor that we all need at the moment.
They cant help but make you smile !

P.s. Joe, you really didnt need to change your hair to show us that you are infact a Jonas brother, or did you just do it for camilla?
(No bad thoughts intended)

I shall certainly be getting this album

orquidia | 4/22/2009, 3:12 pm EST

RamJam | 4/22/2009, 5:15 pm EST

Hey orquidia…you obviously don’t have a life either. Learn how to spell and use grammar, ya dumb bitch.

Gaston | 4/22/2009, 7:26 pm EST

i hope this album would be more mature, i´m a growed person and i really like their songs but well they cant still singing to teen people all time

tickets | 4/23/2009, 3:05 am EST

I bet everyone who likes the jobros will forget about them by the time they are eigteen

Anonymous | 4/24/2009, 5:38 pm EST

Wow… Some of these comment-ers have no lives. For one thing, Most of their fans are 14 OR OLDER. Yes, they have younger fans, but it’s good that there is music out there that’s appropriate for little kids to listen to. I’m pretty sure most of their fans are between the ages of 14 and 20. But they even have fans older than that. Also, who says that they aren’t having hard times? You don’t know them, so you don’t know whats going on in their lives. And no one ever said that the title is referring to them only. The whole world is going through tough times right now, and they see that and are incorporating it into their album title. And, um, any idiot with the brain of a ten-year-old would know that when you take professional photos, there are bright lights shining in your face. So that’s why Nick is squinting. Please, if you don’t like them, don’t ruin it for the people who do by saying rude and inappropriate things.

Personally, i can’t wait for this album. I’ve loved the Jonas Brothers since I was 12 and I can’t wait to see how they have matured. :D

Zarah | 4/25/2009, 1:59 pm EST

I love the Jonas Broters!
But you know what i don’t get?
Almost all guys hate them and don’t get why girls like them. But, if the guys would maybe act like gentlemen like the Jonas Brothers a lot of girls would probably like them too.But that’s just what i think.

p.s I don’t mean this in a bad way, i was just expressing my thoughts.

Aluccia | 4/25/2009, 2:05 pm EST

im italian girl …i love them my only reason of my life!!for ever the best

blech. | 4/26/2009, 3:44 pm EST

The band doesn’t make good music.
None of their lyrics are actually “deep.”

They sound slightly worse live.

The “purity ring” marketing-ploy is just a way to sell sex while keeping it, “Family-friendly.” (look at that album cover again; the poses are chosen to evoke the pose of someone leaning in for a kiss and the leaning over the hood of a truck is meant to evoke the masculinity of the vehicle. All of this is immediately contrasted with the purposeful glinting of the ring and its place towards the center of the image, reinforced by light on the truck. SEX! followed by PURITY! is quite a twisted little mixed message that preys on the transitioning feelings of the young girls this is blatantly aimed at.)

Also, the title is not poetic, just a series of recycled cliches.

i ♥ the jonas brothers | 4/30/2009, 7:26 pm EST

OMG that is sooooo amazing!!!! i can’t wait to listen to their new CD! i love the jonas brothers!!!

tori | 5/1/2009, 12:11 am EST

i hate u guys

tori | 5/1/2009, 12:11 am EST

i hate u guys

tbird122930 | 5/3/2009, 2:55 pm EST

For all of the people who just like to hate on them, you obviously don’t have kids. EVEN if you don’t agree with what they’re doing, doesn’t it matter to you that they ARE important to some people. So what if those people are teenage girls? They deserve as much respect as anyone. They are gentlemen. You don’t know them. The world would be a much better place if people like you kept your nasty comments to yourself.

Brittany Jonas | 5/3/2009, 5:17 pm EST

I cant wait till the New jonas cd comes out! The jonas brothers are my life and are absolutly amazing! I love the Jonas brothers with a burning passion :D

sammy | 5/5/2009, 3:18 pm EST

im gettin sick a tired of hearing bad thoughts about the jonas brothers so some people don’t like them who cares othe people do and u don’t have to poor all ur anger about the jonas brothers on to little kids that are between ages 8-12 it might hurt them. but for older fans like me who cares about the age or if they like the jonas brothers its not ur problem to care about there age if they like the jonas brother or even just there music then its the jonas brothers fans problems not people who hate them have to care about it

RachEvz | 6/12/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Alright, I’ve seriously had enough of the haters. Just because the Jonas Brothers are from Disney, does not mean they are only for little kids. Secondly, seriously you guys need to stop being so frickin paranoid (no pun intended) about the Disney corporation. Disney is a family friendly company. Sure they make a huge market of the JoBros and everything Disney, but there are not little Mickey Mouse conspirators thinking of ways to sell sex to little girls or any of the ridiculous things you guys are saying. Just because JB are famous does not mean they cannot have legitimate values, such as not having sex before marriage. They have made it clear that they are Christians, and real Christians keep that particular value close to heart. Also, just because they are famous does not mean they do not go through hard times. Rockstars don’t have to do drugs and have their lives fall apart to have real struggles. I do not do drugs or sleep around and I live a pretty good life, but I still struggle with things that really hurt me. What gives anyone the right to say that the problems they obviously go through (because no matter how famous you are, nobody’s lives are perfect) are not real or deep? They wrote this album for not only themselves, but also their fans. They truly care about their fans, because without us they would not be where they are today. And sure, some of the fans are younger, but the truth of the matter is, the majority of the fans are in an OLDER age group. I am 17, and I love them, and I’m not some weird hormone driven teen. I’m normal. Seriously, you guys are just being ignorant, because you are so stuck on the fact that they are backed by Disney, that you really don’t take the time to learn anything about them or even listen to their music. You guys are too quick to judge, and you’re really just missing out. You need to stop listening to whatever crap Russell Brand or anyone else is saying about them, and actually educate yourself, and form your own opinion. And if you listen to them and you don’t like them I can respect that, but this whole business with hating a song because of the name “Jonas Brothers”, and not actually ever listening to it, is ridiculous. And one more thing, no, the Jonas Brothers lyrics may not be the deepest in the world, but bear in mind they are still fairly young artists. They have a true talent for song-writing, especially Nick, at such young ages. And chances are they are twenty times better than half of you haters out there. But JB is improving, and maturing as they grow, and you have to respect them for that.

Seriously guys, just stop hating. Actually listen to there music and form an opinion, don’t just hate them because they are backed by Disney, or because Russell Brand told you to. And don’t get your information about them from SouthPark, because that is called a satire, not a documentary–it isn’t fact.

Sorry for writing so much, ignorance just really pisses me off.

Anyways, I am very excited to see how much the guys have grown in this new album! :-)

Wow hahaha I didn’t realize just how long that comment was until I posted it. Hahaha sorrryyy, I just couldn’t stop myself. c(-:

RAACHELD | 6/16/2009, 11:08 am EST

long story, short..

get passed the label they’re under and take a listen to the music.

all said and done.

inspire me | 6/19/2009, 1:42 pm EST

’sigh’ i am really about to blow up here! i wish that stupid people would just stop writing mean, rude and wrong comments. i mean if you really do dislike the jonas brothers than stop comming to sites like this. yes your opinion is yours but dont you people have a myspace or something. go bad mouth them on there, not here. besides, your only putting yourself through more by writing bad comments. your wasting your time. i love the jonas brothetrs soooo much! they are my inspiration in all aspects of my life. they inspired me to write my own music. and it is awsome too. writing music really helpes me express myself being a 14 year old girl who is going into 9th grade in september with a crush who knows i like him and who will probably never like me. but writing songs have really helped me. i have to thank the jonas brothers for inspiration and taylor swift also. and last but not least, high school, teenage drama for the storys behinde my songs. you never know, maybe one day i will be the one people talk about on the web. well love ya jobros!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lolzor | 6/19/2009, 5:41 pm EST

what a terrible excuse for music. I love how the little girls get on here and start off with “SSERRRIOUSLY i hate all these haterz” and then proceed to write a novel on how much they would love to give the johoes a HJ. It will be interesting to see when they start to age whether or not their label and disney will dump their asses like they dump every handpicked gimmick
