Exclusive: Pixies Albums Being Reissued for “Minotaur” Box Set

4/21/09, 9:45 am EST

All of the Pixies‘ studio records are being reissued in Limited Edition and Deluxe Edition box sets titled Minotaur that will be released on June 15, 2009. Rolling Stone has learned that the sets — which include the Come on Pilgrim EP (1987), Surfer Rosa (1988), Doolittle (1989), Bossanova (1990) and Trompe Le Monde (1991) — are being repackaged with the assistance of the two men responsible for art directing and shooting the photographs for the original albums, from Surfer Rosa’s iconic flamenco dancer to Trompe’s popping eyeballs: Vaughan Oliver and Simon Larbalestier.

Jeff Anderson, the founder of A+R (Artist in Residence), who is overseeing the project, says he didn’t want to touch the original master recordings of the Pixies’ albums, so the reissues will feature the music as it was originally released. The sets will not feature any live tracks, and decisions about bonus tracks haven’t been finalized. But the packages will definitely be stocked with bonus artwork — and they’re named after a mythic creature befitting the band’s powerful, warped rock & roll. Here’s how they break down:

For $175, the Deluxe Edition gives fans the five albums on a 24k layered CD and a Blu-ray for a total of five discs, plus a DVD of the band’s 1991 Brixton Academy gig (a year before their split) that also includes all their videos. The Deluxe Edition features additional artwork by Oliver and a 54-page book. The Limited Edition costs $450 and includes the entire Deluxe Edition plus all five albums on 180 gram vinyl, a Giclée print of Oliver’s artwork and a 72-page hardcover book. The Limited Edition comes with a slipcase, the Deluxe in a custom clamshell. Pre-order information is available at the A+R Website.

Oliver says he and Larbalestier came up with new artwork for the set by following the process they used back when the Pixies were originally recording: Simon shot photos, and Vaughan used them as a jumping off point — Vaughan also put his students at the University of the Creative Arts in Epsom to work, allowing them to design the track list titles. “My starting point would always be the music, reading the lyrics, talking with the band,” Oliver explains. “The images that Charles [Thompson, a.k.a. Black Francis] painted with his lyrics really struck a chord. His work is full of fantastic imagery that always appealed to me, and those were ideas I was trying to reflect with the packaging.”

Get a look at Oliver and Larbalestier’s work in action as Anderson and Vaughan talk about Minotaur to a soundtrack of “Where Is My Mind,” above.

$175 – $450 for no new music? Oh, right, there’s new artwork. Thanks. Filthy lucre indeed.

Vincent | 4/21/2009, 10:28 am EST

Yea its pricy, but im betting that if you dont get one of those sets now youll probably never see em again or at least for a really long time (Theres live performances & Liner Note/History Booklets Too if you had kept reading)I remember i didnt buy the Samhain boxset when it came out & now its out of print & if i want a copy Ill have to pay about $275 to $300.I for one will be getting getting at least a deluxe edition & will know where every penny went.

Steve | 4/21/2009, 10:30 am EST

All Pixies fans are shaking their heads in disgust today. We have been teased with a new album for years now. This box set is overpriced crap. Why NOT remaster the albums for CD release as every other major band has done? At least THAT would have been something.

Nick | 4/21/2009, 10:59 am EST

I am excited by this. I believe we will never see a new Pixies album, maybe a song here or there, but never a new album…I don’t expect them to live up to that. I have music from Black Francis, Grand Duchy. I for one will be purchasing this, with everything included + all albums on vinyl…yes.

Vincent | 4/21/2009, 11:12 am EST

I guess people don’t like really nice box sets anymore,What a fucking shame.

Anonymous | 4/21/2009, 11:24 am EST

They should make the individual records available on vinyl too, cus most of us aren’t gonna drop $450 for that deluxe set.

dragonmere | 4/21/2009, 11:26 am EST

Half a grand to get pixies on vinyl? That sounds like a good deal, and at that price, I am sure that I would not be paranoid about actually playing the records.
It’s great to spend that much money on something you already own, and cannnot really ever enjoy. Right???

Jennifer | 4/21/2009, 11:31 am EST

WOO-HOO!

Anonymous | 4/21/2009, 11:36 am EST

That’s a lot of money for things that people already have. I would rather have a new album!

Vincent | 4/21/2009, 11:37 am EST

Just like there probably not gonna put out a new album,There probably not gonna put individual Vinyl albums,But it would be nice.

Kevin the Robot | 4/21/2009, 11:54 am EST

$175 for 5 discs and one blu-ray? That comes out to over 30 bucks a disc with taxes. This Monkey’s gone to Hell.

SS | 4/21/2009, 11:57 am EST

What a shame no new music….

Mandy | 4/21/2009, 12:00 pm EST

What the hell? No thanks! I mean yeah it’d be cool to have, but with the crap that’s going on these days…who can afford that? I absolutely ADORE the Pixies and have for a long, long time, but come on people…NEW ALBUM PLEASE!!

billtheeviltwin | 4/21/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Instead of “Minotaur”, “Cash Grab” would have been better.

iamthewalrus | 4/21/2009, 12:41 pm EST

love the pixies…I would rather send them money direct than filter that much money through the already over greedy record companies for a simply overpriced box set. Come on….producing CD’s made in China cost what..maybe a dollar including labor? Get real…the working people of this country can’t keep paying for corporate bonuses, parties, conventions and all else we get hosed for. Time to get real!! I don’t blame the Pixies….they just want to make a living like we all do.

honeycoke | 4/21/2009, 12:59 pm EST

trompe le fans

Bore | 4/21/2009, 4:03 pm EST

You guys are aware that all of the Pixies albums are currently available on 180g Vinyl right now for between $10 and $15 each, right? They aren’t hard to find.

Edouard | 4/21/2009, 4:14 pm EST

No thanks!
A 24 bits/96 Khz (on a usb key for example) edition of their album would have been great but here they really take people for bloody idiots… No work and want to earn money?

Daniel | 4/21/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Call me when you remaster – in the meantime, I’ll listen to vinyl you greedy asses.

dude | 4/21/2009, 7:41 pm EST

CD’s are okay, but i just want 180gram vinyl!

Euphio | 4/21/2009, 9:13 pm EST

I’ll tell you what…how about I pay $450 for a new album?

Keith | 4/21/2009, 9:46 pm EST

My thoughts on the prices can be summed up in three words: Oh My Golly!

River | 4/21/2009, 10:25 pm EST

For real? I got stoked thinking maybe this would be a new album, then realizing I was wrong, maybe a remastering, but NO. This is greedy BS. Blah blah blah and screw you guys.

bepokinbitches | 4/21/2009, 10:33 pm EST

lol who are they?

Chomsky | 4/21/2009, 10:36 pm EST

Anyone that pays for music these days is a sucker. As much as I love them, screw these bands for repackaging stuff we already have. If the minstrels wanna make a buck, tour. Technology has busted up the record racket.

Olympus Nons | 4/22/2009, 1:35 am EST

Such a shame. Woke up to radio news of new album, dug deeper and it’s just all the albums I have in my itunes anyway. I was scared about a new pixies album though I guess…. I mean Bam Thwok? Seriously??? Love Mountain Battles though.

Sally Lunn | 4/22/2009, 5:01 am EST

Wow I’m so excited about this! I love a good box set. I see the money as an investment anyway, have you seen how much Oliver’s limited edition shit goes for on eBay????!! I for one will be buying the limited edition and I will paw over all the new artwork he, Larbalestier and his students have made. This box set is like a celebration of amazing music and amazing graphic design. Woo!

Poverty Artist | 4/22/2009, 5:23 am EST

I’m happy for all the Pixies fans of yore who have become so successful that they can afford to pay this much for music. It’s cold comfort to think that my poverty is the proof I’m the only one who didn’t “sell out”, though.

dr.03 | 4/22/2009, 5:48 am EST

ok so i was reading this and my dog was in my lap and noticed i was staring at the screen, so he did too, and then he started barking and yellping and crying, and jumped off and ran away, and in the process dropped my new 2000 laptop on the floor, blew up, and a peice of the computer stabbed my retna, my wife does not wanna have sex with me anymore cause my balance is off and my eye is totally swollen shut….you bastards!!!

Jere | 4/22/2009, 10:22 am EST

To get their albums (and Come on Pilgrim) on vinyl and CD is, what, $150? (estimating @ 15/album, vinyl or CD)

Oh wait, but I guess we’d be missing the art work.

j | 4/22/2009, 10:38 am EST

If you like the Pixies brand of music, take the 450.00, buy a guitar and make your own. Trust me, that would be money better spent.

Jungleland2 | 4/22/2009, 12:00 pm EST

the Pixies’ output would fit on a three CD set and could have at least been remasterd..for $25

Music Fan | 4/23/2009, 3:34 am EST

Why not remaster the orginal albums? I would buy a remastered pixie album…..I don’t get it…..so people are just paying $175 for new artwork?

Skonk | 4/23/2009, 10:44 am EST

Greedy asses.

PigDog | 4/23/2009, 12:17 pm EST

I agree with the comments here questioning the need for this set, especially given that none of the albums are going to be remastered. What is the point?

Dusty Rhodes | 4/24/2009, 12:27 am EST

AINR should sell the hardcover book separately. I already have all the original vinyl. Vaughan Oliver’s Pixies record packaging was pure genius.

JustKyles | 4/24/2009, 1:40 pm EST

I picked up the 3 remastered, high-res SACD hybrid CDs that Mobile Fidelity put out last year for far less than the boxset will cost.
What a pointless reissue…

Tom | 4/27/2009, 11:28 pm EST

No…of course not.

It’s NEVER a new album.

Phill DeGraves | 5/15/2009, 11:24 pm EST

Get back in the studio the four of ya and do what you do best.I’m not buying any pixies merchandise till there’s new music.

poo turd | 5/19/2009, 10:16 pm EST

Housed in a custom clamshell cover? I’ll take 7 of the limited edition sets!

Chas | 5/25/2009, 10:13 am EST

Complete waste of money. How long is 4AD going to keep flogging this horse? The sad thing is that Francis is involved this time which makes it even worse.

aleceyeful | 5/26/2009, 6:28 pm EST

I have EVERYTHING they have ever done (Breeders, Amps, F.B & the Catholics, Joeys band etc.) I am disgusted by this!

K-town | 6/6/2009, 7:51 pm EST

Releasing this booolshit when there is neither a remaster nor a future prospect for a new album and considering the state of record retail this plays out like a fucking CEO getting more money from the stimulus package. Now way. I won’t pay.

Martin | 6/30/2009, 4:36 pm EST

For those who want their records re-released with the original art… 4AD did that a few years ago. They’re all readily available for around $12 each, which makes $450 for this crap even more ridiculous.

Why oh why is it only the truly negative shortsighted people who mainly respond on these types of pages.
Only three positive responses.
Some folk here would not buy this box set, I feel, even if I gave them the money to do so.
That is not and will never be, the action of a true fan. Of anything, not just the Pixies.
$495 is not too much money for most people. Please don’t try and tell me otherwise. If you do, I will point out the price of alcohol, cigarettes and a myriad of other distractions that cost you all a small fortune, if you actually stopped to think for a moment.
Some of you want remastering. So let’s get this straight, some of you would buy this box set if the music sounded different to the original. Mmmm. I don’t want the Pixies music messed around with, and neither should you. If you want something different, then try listening to something else.
When these are gone, they will be gone forever, and I know for sure that some folk here will rue the day that they responded with the knee jerk reaction of the masses, and didn’t stop to think about the sheer joy that is possible from a more positive outlook.
There is still time. Order your copy today, and own something classy and totally exciting.
Bottom line…Are you a fan?
YES or NO ?
