Comment of the Week: Spector Found Guilty of Murder, Ruining “Let It Be”

4/17/09, 4:12 pm EST

After the Phil Spector murder retrial ended with a guilty verdict, the “Wall of Sound” producer looking at the prospect of life in prison and the culmination of a three-year-long chapter in Rock Daily’s life, our readers both celebrated and bemoaned the trial’s outcome. Still, reader Anonymous feels like Spector committed one crime back in 1970 that has still gone unpunished:

“Phil Spector should have been given the death penalty…. not for the murder of Lana Clarkson…

…but for what he did to the Beatles’ Let It Be album.

The record was good enough, as is. But then he went ahead, and took a great big shit all over the original sessions, by adding the most god awful syrupy strings and choirs, making the music practically unlistenable.”

Thankfully for Spector, the 2003 release of the stripped-down Let It Be… Naked ensured that he’d never be brought up on those charges. As for those still-angry Beatles fans that want justice, well, that’s what civil cases are for.

The death of that lady happened the day that McCartney announced that Let It Be was being remixed. Was he extra angry that day?????

What a douche. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Is that a pic of Howdy-Doody in real life?

Phil = INNOCENT | 4/19/2009, 3:03 pm EST

If Paul was so upset by Spector’s production of the Let It Be album, it certainly didn’t stop him from picking up the Grammy (’Best Original Score for a Motion Picture’)at the 1971 Grammy Awards. Listen to the original album again… Lennon himself subsequently remaked that Spector made a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

The “Get Back” sessions were a mess. Spector came in and made some sense of things, at least from what I heard. The Beatles, minus Paul, agreed to go ahead with letting him finish it up. George Martin walked out on it all. Plus, they knew Spector’s style. It was what it was. It’s a damn shame that Spector will be remembered for the shambles of “Let It Be,” Ike and Tina’s flop “River Deep, Mountain High” and being convicted of murder. He is still one of the greats of the rock era. He made the role of being a “producer” important. And for that, we can thank Phil Spector.

*** SPECTOR – NOT GUILTY ***
I don’t know how they got the jurors to put the gun in Spector’s hand. At the first trial 3 world recognized authorities on forensics and gun shot blood spatter said Spector couldn’t have shot her. Per Wikipedia a bullet leaves a gun at from 1,080-5,910 feet per second. There was no exit wound in Lana’s head. There had to be copius spatter; and they found it on her, not on Spector. As I recall, the only spatter they found on Spector was on part of a sleeve of his white jacket, and they had to look through a microscope to see it. His attorney said it was as if, from many feet away, he raised his forearm to protect his forehead. Clarkson had an addict’s amount of narcotics in her blood; and from other testimony it appears she was a narcotics addict. They found no illegal substances in Spector’s blood. Lana’s best friends testified that she was terribly depressed, was out of control crying, wailing that her life was a mess and she wanted to end it all. I’m sorry for her problems; but blaming Phil Spector for her suicide appears to me to be most incorrect and horrible. Has Spector’s I think excellent defense cost him over $15 million? I find this frightening. Spector is a great and accomplished musical talent, and I think NOT GUILTY.

This has been a long time in coming… this is the same man who kept his wife Ronnie under lock and key, who terrified the Ramones (inner city boys, don’t forget) by lecturing them with a loaded handgun during the recording of ‘End of the Century’. Spector was always a loose cannon. If someone had acted sooner Lana Clarkson would still be alive.

Kelley Lynch | 4/22/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Godfrey, Do your homework. Marky Ramone has clarified what happened with Phillip and the Ramones. Phillip did not have a gun and did not hold one on them. It was a good rock ´n roll story. Kelley Lynch

MICHAEL HILTZ | 4/22/2009, 3:35 pm EST

I BY FAR PREFER THE REMIXED COPY OF LET IT BE. SPECTOR’S PRODUCTION OF LET IT BE WAS NOT WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDED. IT IS ONLY A FEW SONGS THAT THE STRINGS, ETC. APPEARED.

David Norton | 4/23/2009, 4:23 pm EST

Little guy…. but what a big big talent. Fidler should never have allowed the ex gal pal flakes that did a number on Phil anywhere near the witness box. NOT GUILTY MAN… Stay strong Phil baby… you’ll be free again, have no doubt on that !!!!!

HE'S GUILTY | 4/24/2009, 7:38 am EST

KELLY LYNCH AND SPECTORFAN7, YOU TWO ARE FLOODING EVERY BOARD WITH PURE NONESENSE. IS THERE SOME REASON WHY YOU TWO LOSERS DON’T WORK? GET OFF THE BOARDS, GET EDUCATED ON THE REAL FACTS OF THE CASE AND GET A JOB ALREADY. YOU’RE EMBARASSING YOURSELVES. IT’S PATHETIC AND GUESS WHAT, YOU ENSURE PHIL GETS EVEN MORE TIME.

menotewe | 4/24/2009, 8:31 am EST

Adrian Zolkover – you are so full oF SHIT. Michael Bad

menotewe | 4/24/2009, 8:42 am EST

Adrian Zolkover – you are so full oF SHIT. Michael Baden could not even define conflict of interest on the stand in the 1st trial. These defense ‘experts’ in the second trial pretty much became prosecution witnesses by default (DiMaio and Spitz). Baden was so bad in the first trial that there was no testiPHONEY from him the second trial. Let’s not forget that one defense expert in the second trial was read his rights on the stand since he perjured himself. Another defense witness was blown out of the water by a recorded interview with Court TV’s Lisa Bloom who was called as a rebuttal witness.

All of this because the facts were clear… after murdering Lana Clarkson, Phil Spector exited the castle with a gun in his hand and told the chaffeur “I think I killed somebody.”

CASE CLOSED. Phil is a M U R D E R E R.

TampFatt | 5/3/2009, 1:18 pm EST

now I’ll stay tuned..

Treske | 5/6/2009, 2:24 am EST

Nobody wanted to do “Let it be” and gave it to Phil Spector. Ringo Starr was the only to come to the studio, the others didn’t care. I consider this album very good and I’m sure Phil Spector didn’t kill anyone. If only he left the woman where she was.

Tudo | 5/6/2009, 9:34 pm EST

Even IF Phil Spector killed Ms Clarkson, at worst it was manslaughter under an extremely extenuating circumstances. And the max punishment in any realistic court of law should amount to no more than 5 years in which case he should be out in about a year. That’s IF.
Some of what the “defence” team did almost makes one wonder whose side they were on. He should win the appeal and be exonerated as long as he has a real attorney.

Spectorfan8 | 5/14/2009, 1:04 pm EST

I do not need a job. My husband has a really good one!!!
I do support Phil Spector, and will continue to do so. To those that do not like it, too bad!!

Justice for Lana | 5/28/2009, 11:13 am EST

Phil is guilty and he will get more than 19 yrs. He’ll never come out alive.

spectorfan8, stop flooding every forum out there. You don’t have a husband, remember? He ran away from you years ago. You said you had no money and live on assistance. Get help before your son is taken away.

m | 5/30/2009, 9:24 am EST

I will quote Vikram Jayanti, who made a very interesting documentary with Spector, and said in the end:
‘After all, one of my cop friends had confided to me that this time they really had to nail their celebrity suspect: OJ Simpson had walked, Michael Jackson had walked, Robert Blake had walked. But Phil, they’d nail. And unlike the others, Spector didn’t have any friends. Except me, I thought.’

Treske | 6/4/2009, 6:19 am EST

Me too I consider being a friend of Phil Spector and he’s my dear and only friend. I’m certain he didn’t kill anyone and hope he gets another trial so that he can be innocented. Love to all the Phil Spector’s fans/friends.

Come on Kelley Lynch | 6/22/2009, 6:42 pm EST

Kelley Lynch is Leonard Cohen’s former manager. According to the May 16, 2006, judgment obtained by Cohen against her, she stole $4 million from him and also mismanaged Cohen’s affairs, resulting in a $7.8M judgment + 10% interest per year at the legal rate.

Cohen also obtained restraining orders against Kelley Lynch in California and Colorado (where she currently lives).

In response, Kelley Lynch has engaged in a relentless smear campaign against Cohen and anyone who dares question her tactics–including by sending 3 emails a day to the IRS and Justice Department demanding that all such persons be arrested or investigated.

In the meantime, most sites on which Lynch has posted her hate have either banned her or removed her posts, and Google deleted her two blogs (and related email accounts) for hateful spamming.

Kelley Lynch has also suffered two involuntary psychiatric hospital commitments, is stalking and harassing attorney Bruce Cutler (whom she has posted she wants to have sex with and has sent over 1,000 ranting voice messages to)–while at the same time stating that Cutler will sue her enemies.

Kelley Lynch has also called for the “arrest” of prosecutors, chief’s of police in two states, blog editors, blog post authors, and many others.

This woman is sick, she has an agenda, and nothing that this pathological sick liar says can be taken at face value.

I would repeat that Google has now deleted her won blog and has cancled her Gmail accounts for violations of the Google terms of use–not to mention that this woman has zero credibility, is malicious, and Play Misty for Me nuts.

I stand by my story. | 7/9/2009, 3:22 pm EST

K. Lynch denies the Ramones story because Marky denies it- Marky can say what he likes, I heard the tale straight from one of his (now deceased) band mates. I’d believe them over him any day – he had dinner with Spector the day before his sentencing, and may consider himself Spector’s last friend… Sad but true. Deal with it.

Kelley Lynch | 7/18/2009, 1:34 pm EST

I Stand By My Story is quoting “dead people” who cannot speak for themselves.

Kelley Lynch | 7/18/2009, 2:15 pm EST

My Mother still thinks Mr. Cutler is a very eligible bachelor. As for Cohen’s lame fraud lies – that’s precisely what they are and that’s precisely what they will always be. What Cohen will always be to me – a thief who has stolen my share of publishing as well as Marty Machat and Bob Johnston’s. I hope he enjoys his new pals – the Clarkson family, Sprocket, Blogonut, and Michelle Blaine. This is just the type of trashy crowd he really attracts: lunatics. Perhaps Cohen can blame his abandoned green card and earlier tax fraud on Marty Machat who is now deceased – since we’re quoting dead people. Very damning comment about the cops wanting to nail a celebrity. Reminds me of Bill Pavelic’s allegations that he, Dr. Henry Lee, and Dr. Michael Baden were set up by LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Unit. Anyway, back to the goofy gossip.

Kelley Lynch | 7/18/2009, 2:19 pm EST

I wonder if Bruce Cutler is dating anyone? Anyway, hopefully my future “judge” won’t delve too deeply into who my Mother wants me to marry or who I want to have sex with. But, in keeping, with Cohen (who my Mother and I agree is a pervert) my sex life is important in his tax fraud matter that I was told is criminal: that’s probably why he and Kory went into my young son’s father’s office to tell him I had sex with Oliver Stone. Oliver Stone will know for a fact that this is a lie and may wonder why he was dragged into this. Because I’m dealing with perverts – that’s why.
