Slayer in the Studio: Loud, Fast and Ready to Thrash

4/16/09, 5:19 pm EST

Rolling Stone’s Steve Appleford recently stepped into a California studio with Slayer to watch the thrash-metal vets assemble their 10th studio album. The record — executive produced by Reign in Blood producer Rick Rubin, and produced by Greg Fidelman — is the band’s second with its reunited original lineup, and promises blinding speed and brutal rage. Check out our report straight from the studio, where the band tested out one of “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott’s old guitars and mused on how their fanbase has changed over their 30-year career:

Ah, Slayer…

There’s something amusing about a 45 year old Catholic living on a farm in Texas with his wife and kids who makes his living screaming about Satan, torture, and genocide.

And on another note…

Kerry King = tattooed pork dumpling!

I’m a metal fan, but I don’t like Slayer. It’s just that Tom’s vocals are so awful. I can’t stand it and the lyrics are always the same religion hating, gloom, and doom things. If they could just get cleaner vocals and write memorable songs they might have been a better band, but that will never happen.

dude man i agree with u when u mention them writing lyrics thats only based on anti-religion and doom. but how can u say toms voice sux?! its nice hearing a metal vocalist the isnt just growling like all the every vocalist out there right now. u can actually understand what the hell hez saying. how do you want him to sound? and when you say they need more memorable songs thats like saying they need more melody. clearly you dont listen to much of there music otherwise you wouldnt have said that cuz apparantly you dont get them.

Dude I have listened to most of Slayer’s best songs: “South of Heaven”, “Raining Blood”, “Angel of Death”, etc. and to me Tom’s vocal’s are just too far out there. I completely agree with you on that most of today’s metal bands sing much worse, but Tom to me kind of is the proto death metal singer. He growled almost as much as those bands today. I like metal singers with pleasant voices like Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, etc. Tom just screams on every album and it’s very unpleasant.

“Tattooed pork dumpling”….that is seriously funny.

As for the Tom’s singing and the lyrical content of Slayer’s music….

Tom is a very poor singer, I concede. However, his boorish barking could not be more appropriate for Slayer’s sound as a band. It’s not quite Cookie Monster, not quite ’singing’, and the results are sweeeeet.

I also think that to dismiss Slayer’s lyrics as ‘anti-religious doom and gloom’ is to miss their point entirely. Slayer is anti-TYRANNY more than anything else, and Kerry sees religion as the greatest engine of oppression ever conceived. When you get technical about it, Slayer is one of the most ‘American’ bands ever (extolling freedom for the people and death to the oppressors).

Besides, with a whole industry dedicated to Christian music, and an even bigger industry dedicated to non-threatening, non-agitating pop music, Slayer stands for balance as much as anything else.

Hail Satan.
