The New Issue of Rolling Stone: Kings of Leon’s God-Fearing, Booze-Swilling Rise

4/15/09, 9:45 am EST

Six years ago, the Kings of Leon were four scraggly kids who could barely play their instruments (or stay sober).

Sixteen years ago, they were preacher’s sons living under a strict religious mandate that prohibited music other than church songs, movies and short pants. Today, they’re the hottest band in America, bringing their dirty brand of Southern rock & roll to sold-out arenas around the world while traveling in luxury planes and running up $10,000 bar tabs.

Rolling Stone’s Smoking Section columnist Austin Scaggs first saw the Kings play New York’s tiny Mercury Lounge in 2003 and knew he’d write their cover story one day. For his feature, he traveled to the Kings’ Tennessee homes and Australia, where he got the dirt on all the Followills’ brawls and Nathan and Caleb’s early days as a country-singing duo while partying with famous faces who were all drawn to the Kings (Chris Martin, Pete Townshend). Grab the full story in the new issue, on newsstands now, and get a playlist of the band’s 10 best tracks here.

Plus, check out our two Kings photo galleries (snaps from the family album and portraits taken in their Tennessee homes), and click above for exclusive footage from our cover shoot in beautiful rural upstate New York, where photographer Max Vadukul shot the Followills on a seemingly endless stretch of farmland. Frontman Caleb reflected on the day and his first-ever RS cover: “It’s one of those things I’m pretty sure will sink in down the road, like, holy shit.”

I’ve been waiting for this for a while now. Too bad it couldn’t have been during Youth and Young Manhood or Aha Shake Heartbreak….or even Because of the Times.
I hope the article is well written.

^^I agree.

Agreed! They’ve done better work than their most recent release but that doesn’t minimize the fact that the Kings deserve this. RS still stinks though….had to say that, because they rerally didn’t give KOL the time of day until they became radio friendly, over played, and over exposed. At least the world knows that the Kings are a force to be reckoned with….it just took RS and others some time to catch on to that fact.

The Kings of Leon today are basically The Band in 1968… And I dig it.

Is it just me or is King Of Leon the 38 Special of this generation? I don’t mean that as a diss. 38 Special is a solid southern rock band with poppy songs.

I had “Aha Shake” and listened to “Sex On Fire”. I just don’t get what is so great about King Of Leon. Like I said, they are not bad. Just not that great.

I would have loved to seen the photos be in the same vein as the album package. They should have used the guy who shot the package “Ray Lego” he made them look so amazing and dreamy.

I am so glad that people are starting to see that there is still good music in th world. It is very rare to come across aband as talented as the Kings of Leon; especialy now. The Followill lads are great in the studio but also great live. So thanx RS for finally putting them on the cover. Alot of bands could learn from them.

Better 5 years late than never I suppose!!
KOL are an amazing band who not only are flawless live but have the most impressive back catalogue of songs of any band around. I’ve seen them live 5 times now and each time they somehow improve on perfection!

No need to trash RS for just now putting KOL on the cover. RS was all over these guys five years ago…that’s why I bought their first album. RS has ALWAYS jocked KOL (especially the Smoking Section). Kudos for a great cover shoot!

Kings of Leon are the greatest rock band on the scene. Great live shows, great music. I’ll never get sick of em. Let’s hope they put out some more music soon…

Arielownsyourface | 4/17/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Kings of Leon are nothing less then spectacular. I do not agree with those 10 songs though

“Milk”
“True Love way”
“Ragoo”
“Fans”
“Arizona”
“Manhattan”
“Soft”

and last but not least

omg! im gonna have to start buying rolling stone again! best cover yet!!!
it’s great that KOL are filally getting the recognition they truley deserve. it’s not often that you come accross an awesome band that write their own stuff and play their own instruments. the new album is godly.

KOL at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, 2009. Wow! Report to follow…
