Green Day Bring “21st Century Breakdown” to Life at Stunning Oakland Gig

4/15/09, 1:02 pm EST

Green Day played the third and biggest show of their week-long tour of the Bay Area on April 14th, performing the whole of their imminent new album, 21st Century Breakdown, at the Fox Theater in the band’s hometown, Oakland, California. An opulent, newly restored 1920s movie palace, the Fox was the perfect — and perfectly ironic — setting for Green Day’s 18 new songs about flaming youth and social collapse. The band’s two club shows last week were, by all reports, raw, thrilling test runs of the material under combat conditions. The Fox gig — with theatrical lighting and arena-pow sound — brought out the 3D dynamics in the songs and gave singer-guitarist-songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong a stage big enough for him to indulge his inner Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey combined.

Photos: Inside Green Day’s Hometown Throwdown

After only eight full rehearsals of the opera and those two club dates, the six-piece Green Day — Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool with guitarist Jason White, keyboardist Jason Freese and guitarist Jeff Matika — had the Quadrophenia-like hang of 21st Century Breakdown’s classic rock melodies and lifetime-punk drive down solid. “I”m not fuckin’ around,” Armstrong crowed in “Horseshoes and Handgrenades,” and there was no insecurity in the way he acted out the burning rage in “Christian’s Inferno” (standing on a monitor speaker, arms outstretched like a human V-for-victory sign) and hissed the threatening vocal bridge in “East Jesus Nowhere” like hell in eyeliner.

Green Day handed out free deluxe programs with the album’s lyrics printed in full, in case anyone wanted to sing along. But the shock of the set was the instant wham and cumulative pull of the hooks and riffs in songs like “Know Your Enemy” and the Who-ish shotgun climax of “American Eulogy” and “See the Light.” The narrative was a lot to drink in at one time, on the first try, even with the words at hand. The music ensured you never felt left behind or at a loss. 21st Century Breakdown is a rock opera in which the rock always comes first.

After 70 minutes of the new, Green Day rushed offstage, then quickly returned for 70 minutes of the familiar. They went back to their Gilman Street days for “Going to Pasalacqua,” and touched on the underrated Dookie-hangover records Nimrod (”King for a Day”) and Warning (”Minority”). Green Day also played a big chunk of American Idiot, including both of its mini operas, “Jesus of Suburbia” and “Homecoming,” showing just how far they’ve come, in risk and achievement, with 21st Century Breakdown.

“Almost only really counts in horseshoes and handgrenades,” Armstrong declared at the start of the third act. Almost was nowhere in the room tonight. 21st Century Breakdown is Green Day’s best album. And at the Fox, they proved that the rock opera can be as punk as a Clash 45.

So, correct me if I’m wrong, but it kinda seems like you’re saying that the new Green Day is sorta like The Who. Hm.

sonj. | 4/15/2009, 2:07 pm EST

awesome , they really can entertain people . the right way.

StrummerJones | 4/15/2009, 2:37 pm EST

Sounds like it has the grandiosity of The Who, the vigor of The Clash, the melody of Bruce Springsteen, and the cheekiness of The Replacements.

My hopes are so high that I’m bound to be disappointed. If I’m not, this could rank up there with Quadrophenia, Born To Run, The Clash (I doubt it’ll be a London Calling), and Pleased To Meet Me (Better than Tim, not Let It Be).

Kevin the Robot | 4/15/2009, 2:59 pm EST

Aren’t those Green Day albums underrated because you guy gave them low ratings? Just like you did with American Idiot which you guys called ‘a mess’. You’re trying so hard this time around not to screw up on this album.

StrummerJones | 4/15/2009, 3:45 pm EST

It’s not like the people at Rock Daily are the ones who reviewed the album.

However, here’s how it goes.

Warning:>Insomniac>Amer ican Idiot>Dookie>Nimrod>Kerplunk!> 39/Smooth

I love green day!!!!!!

Anonymous | 4/15/2009, 6:57 pm EST

BA Barracho | 4/15/2009, 7:24 pm EST

I cant figure out if Green Day are geniuses or complete idiots. Punk rock sprung out as the back lash to overblown operatic self indulgent prog..yada yada music of the 70’s. So making a punk rock opera seems like an oxymoron and shouldnt make sense. It’s not punk if its a rock opera and a rock opera isnt really punk. I’m confused.

tt | 4/15/2009, 7:35 pm EST

The show and album rank in the top of my 20 plus years of concert going experiences. Never heard a lyric of the new album but cannot wait to purchase it. Haven’t seen Green Day live since the Dookie tour at the Kaiser in Oakland and damn have they matured, U2esque.

greendaymaniac | 4/15/2009, 7:43 pm EST

Green Day are my life!!!!!

greendaymaniac | 4/15/2009, 7:45 pm EST

the 21st century breakdown is amazing!!!

Gypsey | 4/15/2009, 7:46 pm EST

I was at The Fox show in Oakland last night, front of stage. We are Bay Area PROUD of our Homeboys! Just you wait….it was FANTASTIC! Green Day are PunkRock Gods! Long live Gilman St…..

Rock n Roll Hall of Fame,
HERE WE COME!!!!!!

iLly | 4/15/2009, 8:40 pm EST

Wow, after “Dookie”, “American Idiot” and success, along comes their “best album”. I can’t wait!

A.M. | 4/15/2009, 8:45 pm EST

One of the most entertaining bands I’ve seen in 35 years of concert-going. If they do not hit my city on the tour, I’ll make sure I’ll go somewhere else to see them.

barracho sucks | 4/15/2009, 8:57 pm EST

green day masters outside the box thinking. it prevents you from running in circles

Marianne | 4/15/2009, 9:55 pm EST

I went to the show. It was amazing. That’s all I have to say.

Cherie Lee | 4/15/2009, 10:55 pm EST

I think everyone has high expectations for this album; i know I do. The great thing about this band is that each album shows a level of growth. this sounds like its going to be American Idiot part two; but AI had a message true to our era; and i believe their music hits home with alot of people. I’m glad to see them back.

nice strategy | 4/16/2009, 1:20 am EST

I was also at the show last night and totally impressed with and psyched for the new material. Even if it doesn’t emerge as their clearly best record, it will join American Idiot and Dookie as all-time classic recordings.

The 2nd half of the show was structured a lot like a mini version of the American Idiot tour setlist and suffered in comparison to the stupendous night-before-Thanksgiving tour closer in SF in 2004, but after 70 minutes of absorbing the unfamiliar (and a late start to the show) the crowd was super high energy the whole show was a blast despite generally crummy sound in the back of the venue.

The debate over whether Green Day is or isn’t punk is totally irrelevant. Holy crap, they can play their instruments. That pretty much disqualifies them from them from being uber-poseurs. Punk purists are so boring in their conformity. The real irony is not in Green Day releasing a concept album but in punk purists thinking that their subculture is respectfully defended by their enforcement of often-arbitrary, closed, self-imposed, aesthetic boundaries.

Raymond Ahner | 4/16/2009, 1:37 am EST

Yet another amazing show. Green Day have totally transcended their “pop-punk” label, and I for one hope 21st Century Breakdown and forthcoming tour make them bigger than ever.

Kat | 4/16/2009, 2:52 am EST

Last nights show at the Fox Theater was definitely in my top 5 concerts of all time, and I’ve been attending concerts for over 30 years. The energy Green Day put out on that stage was intense, the show was spectacular!
I was thoroughly impressed with the performances of Mike & Tre, and Billie Joe was absolutely mesmerizing on stage. He is one of THE best frontmen in the business.
This upcoming tour is one not to be missed!

Anonymous | 4/16/2009, 3:01 am EST

god help us!

vivalagloria | 4/16/2009, 6:08 am EST

I’ve seen some of the world’s biggest acts, REM, U2, Coldplay etc, but Green Day’s gig at Milton Keynes on the AI tour was the best i have ever seen by a considerable distance.

BJA worked the crowd like nobody i have ever seen.

natch | 4/16/2009, 7:40 am EST

I understand that all song writers lean on certain phrases or words but how may songs is Billy Joe going to write with “Jesus” in the title ?

surfacig7682 | 4/16/2009, 8:00 am EST

Green day being compared to the who, bruce sprinsteen and the replacements. God help me. Nothing punk about Green day anymore. Glad I stopped listening to these assholes after Nimrod.

laurence | 4/16/2009, 8:53 am EST

Green day are better than the who, and as an english gentleman i know just as the who do that they want to be the kinks.

Anonymous | 4/16/2009, 9:06 am EST

Punk was in part a reaction to prog, but you have to remember that the particular scene in which Green Day was born was actually full of hippies *and* punks and punks sort of took on some of the hippie values and they sort of inter-mingled. It’s not like it’s completely out of left field here.

Paw | 4/16/2009, 9:08 am EST

natch! Do you mean “Billie”?

GoTerps | 4/16/2009, 9:09 am EST

Glad to see someone is keeping the spirit of The Who alive with powerful songs in the rock concept format, and great live performances.

seriously | 4/16/2009, 9:55 am EST

Do people seriously like Green Day? This is easily one of the most ignorant and pathetic bands of the last 50 years. Some of the worst garbage out there in the vein of Nickleback. Their pseudo-political BS is way above their actual shitty talents and the fact that people enjoy them is ridiculous. you all need to get a grip and get some taste. I am so glad I have never and will never see a Green Day concert and I pity those that do enjoy Green Day.

Billy Joel Armstrong Don't | 4/16/2009, 11:08 am EST

I never know why people like Green Day, they suck musically and they always complain about the government like they know anything , they are high school dropout and drug addicts, green day sucks and that’s all I know.

Anonymous | 4/16/2009, 11:35 am EST

“I understand that all song writers lean on certain phrases or words but how may songs is Billy Joe going to write with “Jesus” in the title ?”

-I guess if you count this new one…I can think of two. It gets to a point when you’re just trying to find something to trash.

Green day is gewoon AWESOME
KLAAR.
:]

Walkerboy | 4/16/2009, 12:03 pm EST

“Vivagloria” – have to completely agree with your comment. I’ve long been a fan of Bon Jovi’s live shows, up until we say Green Day at the MK Bowl – they’re now the benchmark!!!

Oaktown | 4/16/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Show at Uptown in Oakland last night was crazy. Right across the street from Fox. Totally a locals show. This was Gilman type show with one of the biggest bands in the world. You don’t get that just anywhere and with anyone. BAY AREA PROUD is right!

mlm21591 | 4/16/2009, 12:04 pm EST

I seriously envy the people that have seen green day performing recently, i can’t wait until they tour in the uk =]

stoophneontiger | 4/16/2009, 12:20 pm EST

Totally on the same boat as mlm21591, Im in the UK and waiting for them to tour here is killing me D: Its my absolute dream to see live the band that changed my and so many other peoples lives. Especially since theyre so amazing live :)

PigDog | 4/16/2009, 12:29 pm EST

Wow, this is some serious praise for Green Day’s new album. I absolutely loved American Idiot; it is without a doubt the best album of the past decade. I still doubt that the new album will top it, but here’s hoping tah I am wrong!

Mikel K Poet | 4/16/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Go Green Day…!!!

Mrs. Armstrong | 4/16/2009, 1:42 pm EST

Billy (sic)Joe Armstrong Don’t, Seriously, et.al: BILLIE Joe has already answered to assholes like you…

NY Rocker Mag:”A lot of people claim you’re not “punk” anymore…

Billie Joe: “Punk is not just the sound, the music. Punk is a life-style. There are a lot of bands around who claim to be punk and they only play the music, they have no clue what it’s all about. It’s a life-style I chose for myself. It’s not about popularity and all that crap. When we started out as a band, we played punk rock, the music. [Then] we changed our sound, but we didn’t change. We’re just as much punk as we used to be. We got a lot of shit, and we’re still getting it, for being signed with a major label. So what? We didn’t start the band to cash in a lot of money. When we started out, punk was probably the most unpopular music around.

What annoys the hell out of me is the arrogance of some people. They don’t even listen to our music, they decided in advance that they don’t like it. You know even before we finished the album, before anybody ever heard just one track, some people had decided that it will suck. I don’t give a shit about them. If they can’t appreciate good music, it’s their own fault. ”

You need to go eat a dick.

Fogliar | 4/16/2009, 3:04 pm EST

Saw them in September of 2005 at the Giants stadium in San Francisco and at the Fox theatre. I have to say that I did not think they could ever top American Idiot but man was I wrong. When this is released, I highly recommend you buy this immediately

Scoring Chix | 4/16/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Fine wine takes time – 21st Century Breakdown – is 100 points! Green Day boys have laid down the gauntlet to all bands!

Bravo, boys, bravo!

Rock on GREEN DAY

@ Green Day Haters | 4/16/2009, 4:16 pm EST

So inform me, please, what is good music? You talk about how bad Green Day sucks, but you never say what all of us “posers” should be listening to. And don’t take the easy route out by saying The Who, The Ramones The Clash… ect…

Onlooker | 4/16/2009, 4:53 pm EST

“Almost only really counts in horseshoes and handgrenades,”

EH?

Just what the world needs, more warmed-over English 60s pop licks from Messiah Billie Joe and the boys.

Great.

DARIOOOOO | 4/16/2009, 4:55 pm EST

It’s funny that someone says ‘I don’t know how you guys listen to greenday’. I mean open up your eyes… millions of people listen to green day and you say that they are a stupid band haha … They made their way through and now their totally successful.

And to those who judge the ‘punk’ genre, which I’m totally proud of being in, as Billie said, punk is not only about the music but it’s about the lifestyle. And there is nothing wrong with a band changing its music style as long
as they’re still GREAT !!!

Onlooker | 4/16/2009, 4:56 pm EST

Punk is NOT a lifestyle. It’s a retarded adolescent phase that some never quite grow out of because they make money from it. Can’t imagine how depressing it would be to be in your mid-to-late 30s and still have to answer teenage stupid accusations about how ‘punk’ you are.

Fucksake.

jesusofsuburbia | 4/16/2009, 5:05 pm EST

i wish i hadn’t moved away from northern california….
UGH i’m so pissed i missed all of those shows.

Sbryna22 | 4/16/2009, 5:11 pm EST

Green Day, wow. I’m never ceased to be amazed at how unbelievably fantastic you are. Your clip I heard of Last Night on Earth moved me to tears not fifteen seconds into it. Congratulations, guys. We’re all growing up together, and I’m loving every second of your ever-evolving works of rock art.

greendayislove | 4/16/2009, 5:31 pm EST

okay yeah “onlooker”
your a fucking joke.
punk is totally a lifestyle and
Green Day is the best fucking band in the world and there like as famous as the Rolling Stones for gods sake. So shut the fuck up.
Like no matter who your talking to and you mention Green Day like everyone knows a song by them.
and there’s adults who are “alternative” that aren’t famous,
and just because Green Day is famous doesn’t mean that they didn’t out grow their alternative side for fame.
like shit I’m totally going to be alternative till I’m 90 fucking years old.
I love this lifestyle, I mean I see why Green Day stayed that way.

NoCalHotMama | 4/16/2009, 6:15 pm EST

I have seen Green Day several times before but this show was truly the best. Small venue, very personal. Green Day rocked and has recorded another CD that will be huge success. Truly the best band around!!

Lori J. | 4/16/2009, 6:54 pm EST

I missed the Independent show and couldn’t do the Uptown one, but I was lucky enough to be at the Fox (as well as at the DNA Lounge in SF). Green Day just blew my mind, both times. The DNA show was sorta like public band practice, and had a wonderfully intimate feeling (Billie Joe crowd-surfed while playing and the audience was, in general, more physically involved with the band, things that couldn’t happen at the Fox due to the venue and all). Anyway, at the Fox, after the whole of 21st Century Breakdown (holy god, it’s incredible), the second setlist was nothing short of thrilling. Some songs were the same as at the DNA (and no complaints there!), but the addition of home-themed songs like Welcome to Paradise and Homecoming just really put the awe in awesome for me. I am in awe. I’m an East Bay girl, born and bred, and while I’ve moved around a bit, I’ve lived my entire life in the East Bay. I’ve loved Green Day for 15 years, since I discovered them at age 14; and to be a part of this magic, this hometown Oakland show, was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing. All my years of loving them, and both nights, I felt them loving us right back. I honestly worried that they wouldn’t be able to top American Idiot, and then a backlash would start. But they did. I don’t know how, but they did. I highly suggest everyone not only buy 21st Century Breakdown but SEE THEM once they launch their world tour. Nothing compares to Green Day live – especially with material like this!

Jesus Christ Supermarket | 4/16/2009, 8:05 pm EST

Just preordered deluxe on iTunes gonna be a five star record these shows were amazing Know Your Enemy is way more kick ass that the 90 second preview

nik | 4/16/2009, 8:32 pm EST

Hey “greendayislove” your correct on greendays life style, but first off greenday is not punk rock…they’ve just become what people think “punk” rock is, real punk rock is bands like The Ramones, and the Sex pisols… so before you go talking about how “punk rock” green day is go back to the roots of real punk you f-ing jerk

agina90 | 4/16/2009, 9:34 pm EST

honestly, ive never been into this band. but after listening to most of what they’ve got, yes. they are the new Who.

Lindizzle | 4/16/2009, 9:37 pm EST

you guys need to chill. the green day guys probably think youre fucking weirdos.. everyone else does.

and green day doesnt suck. they just arent your type of music.. stop complaining.

GDfanatic | 4/16/2009, 9:46 pm EST

Green Day is so f****** amazing. I heard AI and it changed my life. Then I started listening to Dookie(greatest album of the 90s) and insomniac and nimrod and I am amazed with each one. Every album of theirs has huge hits with dookie it was basket case, when I come around, Longview… Insomniac had Brain Stew/ Jaded, Geek Stink Breath… Nimrod had Time of Your Life, Nice Guys Finish Last… Warning had Minority and AI every song on it was a hit with Boulevard of Broken Dreams and AI being the biggest and I have no doubt 21st century breakdown will be at least as good as Insomniac, AI, and Dookie and have hits as big as Time of Your Life, Brain Stew Basket Case… Etc

want2givebjabj | 4/16/2009, 10:49 pm EST

nik, your argument is ridiculous. Thats like saying music that doesn’t sound like elvis, buddy holly, or little richard isn’t rock music. Why is it every other genre of music can progress but punk has to stay frozen in the time of the ramones, the clash, or the sex pistols. You should be crediting Green Day with bringing punk back to life if it weren’t for them we’d all be listening to white snake, bonjovi, and poison.

basser | 4/16/2009, 11:53 pm EST

Great. First Rolling Stone hails these posers as the new Clash. Now RS is comparing Green Day today to The Who (specifically Townshend and Daltrey). Ugh. That’s the third strike for me. This magazine has fallen so far … Green Day is only making waves (still) because they are political. Where where they before American Idiot came out? They had started to fade, people. Lesson to all bands: when record sales (and downloads) begin to trickle off, get political, and then mags like Rolling Stone will hail you as visionary and timelessly relevant. I sure wish Rolling Stone would pay attention, instead, to the news that Transatlantic is reforming for a new record – and possibly a new tour. There’s more talent in Neal Morse’s pinky than all of Green Day combined. :)

Dante | 4/17/2009, 12:34 am EST

i have only once been to Green Day concert in 2006 during American idiot World Tour in Melbounrne Australia. It was an incredible gig for me. After reading this gig review, i felt like Green Day are back where they belong again !!!! They surely will rock our ears with this awesome record plus old favouite hits for the upcoming tour,,, i can’t fucking wait to hear and see them again

Green Day for life !!!!!!

WHO FUCKING CARES IF THEY ARE PUNK, GOD I USED TO ADORE PUNK UNTIL EVERYONE KEPT FIGHTING ABOUT IT. THE POINT IS GREEN DAY WRITES GREAT ZUPLIFTING MUSIC, and honestly you dont have to like them I respect peoples opinions but the people who come on here and bash them always sound like the biggest douche bags, no musical talent please!!!! I am a great musician and believe me trying to get a band together that sounds half as tight as these guys is close to impossible, so please if you dont know shit about what they sing about, or how hard it actually is to make music this good, then shut your pathetic mouth and go jerk off, or on a non hateful note go listen to your music and let us like ours.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but don’t believe that you can coerce someone into seeing your point of view. Do you know who will like this article? Green day fans. Do you know who will hate this article? People who do not like Greenday. Jesus Christ. I read these “comments” for their humorous aspect, but Godsakes do you ALL think that your opinion matters?

Aaron | 4/17/2009, 11:04 am EST

What Green Day realizes is that if you want to have a long, prosperous career, you have to change your sound every once in a while. If U2 never made Achtung Baby, and just kept remaking The Joshua Tree over and over, they’d be on the county fair circuit right now. Bruce Springsteen never remade Born to Run, and The Beatles wouldn’t be nearly as legendary if they never made Rubber Soul and everything after it. Green Day could have just remade Dookie over and over again, but if they did, they’d be were a majority of the 90’s punk bands are: playing the nostalgia circuit.

Kaz Newton | 4/17/2009, 12:54 pm EST

But still awesome! :)

i took my son to see green day at the fox and it was an incredible show, just amazing. i am so lucky to live in berkeley, green day’s hometown, and to have been able to take my son to a show he will remember his whole life. it was the perfect venue in my opinion – small enough to feel really intimate and to be able to see everyone onstage right up close, but big enough to get the full effect of a big loud rock show. their new material was great and everyone got really excited when they played their old stuff! it was obvious they loved playing for their hometown. free posters afterwards! i walked in doing this for my son, who is their #1 fan! an old punk myself i had all those opinions these other jokers on here had about them. but after seeing this show i am a fan too. great show green day!

raisedlefteyebrow | 4/17/2009, 2:52 pm EST

ROLFL! Greenday islove, since when was “sexdrugsandrockandroll” part of the alternative lifestyle? Alternatve is about making great music regardless of what’s popular, something that Green Day doesn’t do very well.

Orb | 4/17/2009, 4:40 pm EST

We were there, and David Fricke is dead on the money on literally every point. We have been going to live concerts for over 35 years, and we both agreed it was the best show we have ever seen. Also interesting was Fricke’s comparison to the Who, which was the EXACT thing I turned to my husband and said as the show was going on. We knew we were seeing a historical moment in music unfolding in front of us. Very exciting.

Just don’t compare them to the Who.
That only sets them up for criticism.

Old X Fan | 4/18/2009, 12:50 am EST

Green Day’s energy and intelligence remind me of another great west coast punk band, X. It’s great to have a band with something to say get the chance to say it. AI was an epic album. Look forward to the new one. If you’ve never heard X do yourself a favor give them a listen.

I don’t get the ‘punk is a lifestyle’ concept.
Can anyone explain that to me?

Jack | 4/18/2009, 2:25 pm EST

I’m so excited for this album.

American Idiot was an epic album, and 21st Century Breakdown is chapter 2 of the album. It’s going to be amazing.

Green Day’s lyrics and songwriting are underrated. Armstrong is an amazing live performer.

Michi | 4/18/2009, 2:39 pm EST

I have enjoyed Green Day’s music since Kerplunk. They are getting better. They are becoming more complex. They are gowning.

Better than most music out there these days.

I almost enjoyed reading all the comments above as much as listening to their music… EXCEPT “Onlooker.” What a kill joy.

“I don’t get the ‘punk is a lifestyle’ concept.
Can anyone explain that to me?”

Punk has always been as much a lifestyle as a musical genre. In general it’s centered around fierce creative independence, a strong anti-commercial and anti-corporate mindset, do it yourself (DIY) ethics, and overall nonconformism. Contrary to popular belief, punk isn’t all about political rants, although that does constitute a large portion of the genre. It’s basically about being as unfiltered, raw, and unpolished as possible about anything that you care about. This includes going beyond just listening to music and taking action and making statements on issues of concern (vegetarianism, the media, anti-fashion statements, expressisng teen angst through various means, etc).

By this criteria, Green Day is not punk. They’re pop-punk (or what I like to call Hot Topic Punk), a watered down varient of punk that’s more commercially acceptable. While the criteria may seem strict, there are punk bands that sound radically different from each other. The lifestyle of the artists defines them as punk more than the actual music does.

‘Punk’ is one of those words like ‘rock n roll’ ‘hiphop’ or ‘god’ that has no precise meaning. Everyone sees it differently.
To me it means immature attitude which can be a good or bad thing depending on what kind of ‘mature’ attitude you compare it to.

YourMoralStandards | 4/19/2009, 7:05 pm EST

Green Days back!!

random515 | 4/20/2009, 5:07 am EST

green day don’t completely conform to the general punk image. they have some very punk sounding songs with punk messages, some pop punk stuff, some mroe modern rock stuff. the fact that they are so musically diverse, and that they don’t get stuck in one genre or image, makes them more punk. punk is supposed to be about non-conformity and saying what you feel. but then, johnny rotten recently did an ad for a british dairy company, so who the hell knows what punk is anymore!

anyway, i’m definitely looking forward to 21st century breakdown. i just listened to “know your enemy” today for the first time and it sounds awesome.

top 40 | 4/20/2009, 1:02 pm EST

Green Day is a good pop band.

Gabe | 4/20/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Look, the whole argument about “Is Green Day punk? Is punk dead? what is punk?” is really just kind of pointless. In the end, genres are mostly arbitrary, and there’s always gray areas between them.

As to Green Day, whether or not they are punk doesn’t really have much bearing on whether their music is good or not. They have grown into a more mature sound, but unfortunately the songs just aren’t there, and lyrically leave plenty to be desired.

That said, I’ll listen to the new album when it comes out. I don’t expect to like it, but Green Day is important enough in music history to warrant a listen.

Sumner | 4/20/2009, 1:50 pm EST

I prefer Joy Divison and New order over Green Day

Mrs. Armstrong | 4/20/2009, 5:00 pm EST

Thirteen Of Two | 4/21/2009, 3:22 am EST

Look. If you don’t like Green Day, stop wasting time flaming the people who do. Please.

Anyways, I have high hopes for the album (if only because the title track sounds so cool). Good luck to them!

J.S. Wildhack | 4/21/2009, 7:32 am EST

Yo, Fricke,
Remember the Vines?
Remember Chinese Democracy? (I do…vaguely…)
As much as I enjoy Fricke’s Picks (and I really do, man!), your bland major label hyping has long since ceased to inspire me to give a shit.

i was at that show and it was hands down the best show i’ve ever been to! for those of you who haven’t seen em live yet…go ASAP! the new album surpassed all expectation’s. it’s so green day and yet so not.

Dennis is Dead | 5/13/2009, 2:46 pm EST

check it. Green Day are musicians and they evolved respectfully as musicians. i dont think its all about being punk for them now. its bout making good ass music, having an ambition in your songs and being a big band. and if you havnt seen green day live, you havnt seen shit.

*Dusk* | 5/13/2009, 7:00 pm EST

I’m buying tickets for one of their shows as soon as they are available for my area. I love green day, I have 4 (soon to be 5) of their albums.

FAN SINCE THE AGE OF 8 | 5/13/2009, 10:17 pm EST

ever since i heard GD were doing a concept album (American Idiot) i immediately thought of them as a Who-like band. they were a working class band who made their style of music popular and went from being merely a band to musicians. they are the first band i really got into and they continue to be one of my favorite bands. i’m just glad i got to grow up with them and their music

noise | 5/18/2009, 11:44 am EST

i honestly cannot get enough of these comments, they honestly make my day, just seeing people bicker back and forth.

i usually try not to comment too much, only because nobody really gives a rat’s ass any more about what people have to say (which is kinda good i suppose).

but i really wont judge this album or the band in any way.
its good, the structure and actual sound of the music is insane. i didn’t think it would be possible to come CLOSE to a jump like “American Idiot” and at first I didn’t think “Breakdown” made it.

Then i realized its a different album. Green Day is different now than 5 years ago, than 15 years ago. They’re the same people, and music will grow, because it is not inanimate, it is living.

and to those people who only like one genre and rag on all other types of music, or maybe a band that “changed genres”, really need to open up, since when has music been about close mindedness?

gloria | 5/28/2009, 12:47 pm EST

reading these comments are pretty entertaining.. but “LISTEN UP” at 4/17/2009, 3:48 am EST is my fave.

fozzy | 6/11/2009, 7:38 pm EST

So do they think that they are Rage Against the Machine now?

Punk Dad | 8/21/2009, 12:09 am EST

Green Day is hotter than ever!!!!!
People just enjoy it. We are very lucky to have a band like Green Day!!
