Dave Matthews Band Grab Gregg Allman, New Tunes for Tour Launch

Three separate times during his band’s sold-out show in New York last night, Dave Matthews posed a simple question to the audience: “Who starts a tour at Madison Square Garden?” It was as if it was the first time the Dave Matthews Band had ever played the legendary venue. And from the sound of the first few songs of the show, DMB seemed as if they were genuinely nervous playing in front of 20,000 fans, despite rocking the room numerous times in their career. The group kicked things off with some relatively mellow versions of “Don’t Drink the Water,” the dirgey “Raven” and their new single “Funny The Way It Is” (off the upcoming Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King), a funked-up, time-shifting number that sounds like it’s in need of some more road-testing.

But mid-way through the gig, Dave Matthews and his band — violinist Boyd Tinsley, guitarist Tim Reynolds, drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard and brass players Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross, who have joined the lineup since LeRoi Moore died last year — cranked up the heat. After a breezy run through the lovely “Pig,” Matthews brought on special guest Gregg Allman, who, Matthews said, “happened to be in town tonight.” With Allman on acoustic, the crew ran through a stellar version of “Melissa,” with Reynolds delivering some nimble slide-guitar work. Perhaps inspired by Allman’s guest appearance, DMB finally caught fire.

Matthews strapped on an electric guitar for another new track, “Why I Am,” a pummeling, near-power-pop number that’s destined to become a showstopper. But old fan favorites proved to be the predictable highlights of the night: “Recently” featured blazing interplay between Reynolds, Tinsley, Beauford and Coffin while the one-two punch of the set closer veered from the mellow jam “#41″ into a fiery rendition of “Two Step.”

Even though he wasn’t present, Moore still loomed large in the room. After “Why I Am” — which featured Matthews singing “Here I am, still dancing with the Groogrux King,” referring to Moore’s nickname — fans erupted into a chant of “LeRoi! LeRoi!.” Matthews seemed particularly touched by the sentiment: he turned his back away from the audience and, for a moment, the frontman allowed Moore’s spirit take center stage.

Set List:

“Don’t Drink the Water”
“Cornbread”
“Funny The Way It Is”
“Raven”
“You Might Die Trying”
“Spaceman”
“Dancing Nancies”
“Pig”
“Melissa”
“Recently”
“So Damn Lucky”
“#27″
“Why I Am”
“Ants Marching”
“#41″
“Two Step”

Encore:
“Sister”
“Tripping Billies”

Still dancing with the Groogrux King.
Bless ‘em for it. LeRoi will always be around in the chords.

Brandon | 4/16/2009, 12:46 am EST

Good time of year to see the guys again. Looking very forward to it, but i’ll always miss LeRoi. Rest in Peace, we love you brother.

Taylor Covman | 4/16/2009, 12:55 am EST

good new song, good album artwork. good to have DMB back.

I can’t wait to hear what ‘Lying In the Hands of God’ will be. Hope that’s where LeRoi is anyway.

Malachi Porterfield | 4/16/2009, 1:03 am EST

can’t believe summer’s nearly here. definitely looking forward to the album and the tour. RIP LeRoi, always miss you man. The tribute video made me cry like a grown man does.

Michelle | 4/16/2009, 9:10 am EST

saw them at iZod last night. They were amazing.. Just wanted to correct you, Rashawn Ross has been touring with DMB for quite a few years now. Coffin is the one who stepped in when LeRoi passed.
And the title of the new song is “Funny the way it is” and it was phenomenal at Izod.. maybe they were just nervous at MSG.. who knows?

Intrepid Albatross | 4/16/2009, 9:22 am EST

Nice Pic of DAVE!

That Photog knows whats up!!!!

g_funk010 | 4/16/2009, 9:29 am EST

Dave is Awsome I can’t wait to hear some ore tunes. dude is a genius

DMB4evr | 4/16/2009, 10:41 am EST

uhmm i think that T is a chubby douchbag and he/she needs to get a life and realize what good music is!!!!! and i would love to hear him/her stand up on stage and sing in front of 50,000 people! so when you do that then come on here and critize Dave who is and always will be better then you!!!!o B.T.W when your making millions of dollars then you can talk the talk and walk the walk!

Dr. Thomas Kaminsky speaks . . | 4/16/2009, 11:44 am EST

Dave Matthews is just a bunch f old crap man, this guy cannot ROCK, do you all understand that!?
Let him bring Greg Allman (another old loser) or his big fat ass wherever he wants, who cares!
you people all wastin your $$$ on this shit.
Now, I don’t like Bono either, but do like his new album, so I am a fair minded man!
put that in your pipe & smoke it everyone.
I went to Med School for 8 years, and now have a thriving practice, with my rock music playing in the waiting room, what a life, you know what they say . . .work hard, play hard!!!
Dr.K

Ryan | 4/16/2009, 12:45 pm EST

I like Dave, but I hate how people try to make it seem like he changes his shit around like a jam band. Every show is fairly similar with the same 50 songs being played in different orders, with occasional rarities.

T. | 4/16/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Hey DMB4ever, get a life and some taste. If you think that worn-out, overplayed, vanilla garbage is good music, you need mental help. Go join the rest of those aging, middle of the road groupies and cheer fat Dave when he waddles onto the stage to “sing” the same tired tunes he’s offered for the past 10 years. Gosh, I’d hate to miss any of that.

Zach | 4/16/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Don’t care about the opinions and the off colored remarks. The proof is in the pudding…Take a look. From Billboard.com

Since the start of the Nielsen SoundScan in 1991, the Dave Matthews Band ranks ninth in album sales — and sales of the new album could improve the group’s standing.

Artist Album Sales
The Beatles 57.3 million
Metallica 51.5 million
Pink Floyd 35.4 million
U2 33.5 million
Pearl Jam 29.8 million
Eagles 29.6 million
AC/DC 29.5 million
Aerosmith 29.4 million
Dave Matthews
Band 29 million**
Dixie Chicks 26.6 million
Source: Nielsen SoundScan
**excluding Matthews’ solo sales

Dr. T. I didn’t get a college education like you…however I’m bright enough to use some resources to back up my opinion. So put that in your pipe Doc.

P Dog | 4/17/2009, 7:39 am EST

Damn Dr. T. A little harsh don’t you think…you play rock music..you might want to go back to school and take a music history class….Dave has jazz in his funk and blues..not just rock bro. He created a sound of his own and while I can’t say he’s the best singer out there what he did with non traditional instruments in a popular band is impressive. Everything was grunge till he burst on the scence. He’s not my fav but I appreciate what he does. Open that mind man…hate to have you as my doctor.

T. | 4/17/2009, 11:58 am EST

Don’t throw a bunch of numbers at me and claim that proves DM’s greatness. The vast majority of people are complete and total morons. Appealing to the great unwashed masses means nothing. Britney Spears and Lady Gaga are popular…enough said.

Zach | 4/17/2009, 12:39 pm EST

Dear T,

Point taken…but I don’t see them on the list T. hmmmmmm. :o ) But I do see Aerosmith, The Eagles and oh yeah….the beatles. I forgot…the Beatles were playing to the unwashed masses in 64′ too. Sorry about that. Let’s see…DMB sold out show of 40,000 fans at Alpine or Dr. T. at open mic night at the local biker bar. That’s a real toss up :o )

DMB! | 4/17/2009, 1:32 pm EST

MSG was a SICK SHOW!! The #41/Ants/Two Step run was some INTENSE Jamming!!! New songs sound fantastic! Big Whiskey is gonna be great! Can’t wait for Fenway boys!!

shank | 4/17/2009, 1:38 pm EST

Metallica at #2 indicates sales do not equal quality.
And where’s Led Zeppelin? I find it hard to believe Dave Matthews has outsold them.
DMB are good musicians but they have yet to come up with any classic songs.

Murban | 4/17/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Every song is a classic fool…

Rock on | 4/17/2009, 4:55 pm EST

You don’t like him or his band… don’t go to his shows or listen to his music. It’s easy… they get little to no airplay.

All the man has ever done is written soulful heartfelt lyrics, toured his ass off and overcome tragic family/life circumstances. All the while being a humble kind man.

Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we’ll die.

TATE | 4/17/2009, 5:10 pm EST

DMB,some act as if he’s the second comming of Bob Dylan ;please!

Me? | 4/17/2009, 10:58 pm EST

ack, who pissed in everyone’s Cherio’s? whatever, it’s a public board.. Awsome setlist, I hope someone shot some video..

Awesome | 4/19/2009, 12:27 am EST

This album is going to be amazing. The first single is a return to old form and the rest of the album is going to honor Leroi’s spirit. As for “Dr.” T, o wait, who cares what you have to say, go listen to your old man music.

artworld | 4/19/2009, 6:25 am EST

T Really? Dave is fat ? And B.B. King,

TheSlovak | 4/19/2009, 4:42 pm EST

“Melissa” is a heckava song. Gregg Allman, YOU ROCK. . .

Anonymous | 4/20/2009, 12:15 pm EST

Yawn….I must have fallen asleep. Is DMB still playing?

ESCO | 4/20/2009, 2:56 pm EST

I was at the show, it was great… they been off 6 months, after a death, and adding new some new faces… they did not mess a beat… any live show can sound flat at times or you can point out a time during the 4 hour show where things are not perfect, but with dmb it seems as if they roll steady with alot of times of perfection… i was in the last row, it was great, made it down to side stage it was great…. the show was a perfect mix of new and old…. i would not credit dave allman for making the show, he was there one song, it was good but not even in the top 10 songs they played…. DMB likes to add guest, but dave can be on stage alone and hold his own… great show if they are within 5 hrs of you make it out to the show cause it worth it… they were completly sold out, even seats behind the stage, with terrible views- eveybody there was dancing and singing…. DMB 09 summmer tour

acousticjamminn | 4/20/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Whoever said all of their songs are classics, Amen. I just had and awesome weekend of dmb in charlottesville. People can say whatever crap they want. heck with ‘em. DMB doesn’t need defense, they do fine on their own as long as they keep on jammin. What a great two shows this weekend. My mind is blowwwnn.

acousticjamminn | 4/20/2009, 3:42 pm EST

oh yeah, forgot to mention…. rashawn has been playing with the band for quite awhile. his presence has nothing to do with LeRoi’s loss. I really like Rashawn, and am liking the additional vocals he is adding now too. Good stuff!

musicinherent | 4/20/2009, 7:24 pm EST

This is to Anonymous from musicinherent. Do you realize how irresponsible it was for you to find it necessary to correct that loon on his grammar? You addressing this repugnant person just invites him back for more. After reading my comment below yours; I cannot believe you would act so empty headed! You did exactly what I suggested not to do in order to discourage him instead of “encouraging” him. What’s up with that? I am still hopeful others will follow my technique; to rid ourselves from this unproductive form of dialogue. I also hope that you were really asleep and did not take time to read my comment. Anyone with half a brain, can see that he enjoys ranting cruel remarks to fire people up and start childish, name calling arguments. I am 53 and a psychologist who loves DMB!! That is why I wrote what I did. Anyone who does not see the common sense in my plan, is just not willing to learn or think. I find it unfortunate that people who call themselves DMB fans, just don’t get it!!! I hope you prove me wrong and start using your heads! A true DMB fan knows better. Peace, love, and the music are the common bond we share. As the words go: “Don’t burn the day away.” On that note I’ll say goodbye and leave it in your hands fans. I love helping people, but will not waste time convincing them to welcome my help. I was brousing the site to catch up on DMB news and comments from fans. I felt you all needed help and guidance to know that you were all enabling stupidity; and rewarding ignorance by replying to it. Stay focused on the kind and positive things. Ignore the negative!!!! You won’t get back the time you waste on it, and you won’t be as happy as you would like to be. Respond to the beauty, not to the beast! My love to DMB and all the fans!!!!!

anonymous | 4/20/2009, 7:37 pm EST

Can’t wait for Nashville this weekend!

Anonymous | 4/22/2009, 8:20 am EST

musicinherent… Please read this carefully. Before you try and start the revolution, remember this… This is a blog where ANYONE can comment and express their opinion no matter how crude or “empty headed” it may be.
Their opinion may differ from yours.
Their opinion may even bash your precious Dave Matthews.
Their opinion may even offend you.

Deal with it.

If you don’t want to deal with it turn your computer off.

Now that you are out of the heat of the moment, I want you to do something for me: go back through that long winded, nonsense you call a “productive form of dialogue” and look at how hypocritical your response was. Please.

I’ll give you a minute…

you done reading?

Here we go.

“Anyone with half a brain, can see that he enjoys ranting cruel remarks to fire people up and start childish, name calling arguments.” I believe this is a good way to fire someone up and start a childish name calling arguement. Agree?

“I am 53 and a psychologist who loves DMB!!” Not hypocritical… just thought it was funny you would mention that. Anybody with me?

“Anyone who does not see the common sense in my plan, is just not willing to learn or think.” Anyone with half a brain can see that you starting a childish arguement.

“I love helping people, but will not waste time convincing them to welcome my help.” Please don’t ask him for help. Please.

“I felt you all needed help and guidance to know that you were all enabling stupidity; and rewarding ignorance by replying to it.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that exactly what you are doing?

“Ignore the negative!!!!” Really? Are you serious??

“Respond to the beauty, not to the beast!” You are literally responding to the beast known as anonymous.

I apologize for being so sarcastic. But really… who do you think you are?

Tim | 4/22/2009, 10:15 am EST

Well said anonymous. Thank you for pointing out musicinherent’s ignorance and hypocracy!!! Hopefully this is the last time we hear from him.

Anonymous | 4/22/2009, 11:19 am EST

musicinherent is in a tough spot. If you respond, you are proving beyond a resonable doubt that you are a hypocrite. If you don’t respond you are letting this guy make you look like a fool. Hmmmmm…

dmb41 | 4/23/2009, 11:34 pm EST

i was at the MSG show and i can say, I was impressed with the new songs. They are very different from the traditional DMB, but they are evolving. And, I thought Melissa was a low point in the show – too funny. All you haters keep it to yourselves, if you don’t like the Band, just chill -no one is forcing you to go to see them. RIP, Roi.

DMBFan | 4/28/2009, 7:54 am EST

For what it’s worth:

The “Who starts a tour at MSG?” statement was actually a question asked by The Roots (the opening act) to Dave right before he went on stage to introduce them. The way he told the story, it was as though it never crossed his mind that you wouldn’t start a tour at MSG. In other words, the band was not nervous. Don’t Drink The Water was not mellow in the least, Cornbread was one of the more energetic versions I’ve seen played (I’ve heard the song at eight different concerts), and Raven the version of Raven – the first time it’s been played since Summer 2006 – was perfectly mellow (as it always has been!).

Naturally, the second half of the set was stellar as well, filled with the “oldies”. It sounds to me like the writer of the article is stuck in the early albums of DMB and biased in that way. Unfortunately, that bias led him to claim that the early music at the concert was “mellow” and played “nervously” when really, I think the author just hasn’t moved along with the band over the years and plain didn’t like the newer music from the Band that he heard at the beginning of the concert. It was a fantastic show, one of the best I’ve been to (which amounts to over 30), and I continue to be amazed at how much energy and passion the band brings to the table during each show.

Enlightenment | 5/1/2009, 12:28 am EST

‘T’ is for Troll.

Adam | 5/2/2009, 6:20 pm EST

Hey, what time does the DMB band usually come on stage after the opening show? I don’t want to miss anything but will be a little late to the show in Dallas, TX tonight.

fadednblue | 5/24/2009, 10:43 am EST

dmb is o.k., hes not jesus,,,, I feel for the ”new” generation,,, pschedelic relcs, like me,,, got to see true talent with minimal if[none at all], special effects that could make a donkeys bray, sound like pavorotti!

Lauren | 8/29/2009, 3:20 pm EST

For a person to be as highly educated as a doctor, calling someone a fat loser is pretty embarrassing. I sure as shit wouldn’t trust a doctor who rather than spending time educating themselves, spends time shit talking dave matthews band not even by giving legit criticism to the music but by name calling. Who is really the loser here, Dr, Thomas Kaminsky? Grow up, and if you don’t like Dave don’t listen to it, and don’t read articles about him.
