Bob Dylan Rep Confirms Robert Hunter Co-Wrote “Together Through Life” Lyrics

4/15/09, 12:41 pm EST

A spokesperson for Bob Dylan has confirmed online reports that nine of the 10 tracks from his forthcoming album Together Through Life were co-written by Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. The liner notes will read “All music by Bob Dylan except ‘My Wife’s Home Town’ (music by Bob Dylan and Willie Dixon) – All lyrics by Bob Dylan with Robert Hunter except ‘This Dream Of You’ which is lyrics and music by Bob Dylan.” Check the new issue of Rolling Stone for David Fricke’s review of the album.

On 1988’s Down In The Groove, Hunter received co-writing credits on the songs “Silvio” and “The Ugliest Girl In The World.” On that record and 1986’s Knocked Out Loaded Dylan wrote with a number of collaborators, but the only other time he wrote the vast majority of an album with someone else was 1976’s Desire — where all but two of the songs were written with Jacques Levy.

Good! Dylan doesn’t have to write everything alone, I’m happy he’s co written them.

So what if he decides to collaborate with someone else. Just be happy he’s still as creative as he ever was.

Hunter has always been underappreciated as a songwriter IMO. He’s a great lyricist, both with the Grateful Dead and with others. Check out a song like Gov’t Mule’s “Lay of the Sunflower” or his work with Jim Lauderdale. Or just about anything he wrote with Garcia, of course.

Besides, anybody that bitches that Bob shouldn’t be cowriting lyrics with somebody need only look at Desire. He cowrote damn near all the lyrics with Jaque Levy(I think that’s his name).

Awesome! Robert Hunter is an excellent lyricist. We are so lucky to be living in the age of Bob Dylan. I hope he releases many more future albums after this one. :)

I wonder if “together thru life” is about Sara or suze.. most would think sara, but I just read great book called “a freewheelin time”… either way, i love bob and his romanticism.

I think it’s all over now kids. He should’ve have written with someone contemporary, like a M. Ward or Calexico.

The writer forgets “Knocked Out Loaded,” on which all of the Dylan originals were collaborations (with Sam Shepard, Tom Petty and others).

Hey…50 years worth of touring, albums, great, great songs and people are crying tears because Bob Dylan had a co-writer on some of the songs? Do a song yourself. Just one. See if anyone besides your family can listen to the whole thing and then look at you and marvel at your originality and genius working with words and music.

sandras | 4/18/2009, 10:57 am EST

Who cares if Dylan collaborates. There are SINGERS who have never written a note or a line of lyric who have been making tons of $ off of his stuff. Just be GoD-D*** thankful that’s he’s still able to do it.

JD | 4/21/2009, 12:22 pm EST

eh.. Bob is Bob.. I trust his judgment.. should be interesting

How could anyone possibly be critical of a collaboration between the two greatest lyricists of all time? Dylan is absolutely sublime, and Robert Hunter is a wordsmith par excellance! Look at the lyrics to a song like Terrapin Station, Hunter at his most hauntingly sublime! Let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme, suggesting rythym, that will not forsake me till my tale is told and done…

all is still good

I was pumped to see that Hunter was in on this album. Two Robert’s are better than one. And the album is really good. Give it a listen before you judge it.

We have loved both artists from the beginning of their careers. This record is wonderful. Their words weave well. We call the collaboration successful, and look forward to seeing Mr. Dylan perform these songs this summer. We would most like to see Mr. Hunter up there on stage as well, for at least a couple of songs together. Two Bobs at a time. It would be historic, like this record is to those of us familiar with these artists.

You know, I like Dylan a lot. His stuff is swell. but, really the stuff here is about Hunter: this cat and what he could do with words, and what Jerry did with his words and melodies–that Hunter often created both of for a song–were just like a relationship of destiny really. Like they were meant to meet, to write hundreds of songs together, to be performed thousands of times, in hundreds of cities, to millions of fans worldwide..I’m alluding to the Grateful Dead here of course. But, Hunter seriously is an under-recognized, under-utilized and often sung by other’s living legend. the other Bob, well, he gets his.
So, Hunter, if you happen across this, great job, thanks for the inspiration, on the so many roads of life. And to those who know and appreciate this heartfelt music of love, loss, and chance, share it with those you love and who love you. Its mysterious how the Presence finds its way into our lives, but the love and recognition I’ve often found in a great Dead show(s)-like dicks picks 12 or 9 or 19-speaks volumes about what humans can give when focused on good, in cooperation with others: Alone I Can Do Nothing, from Steps to Knowledge: The Book of Inner Knowing, says. I really feel many of these songs, by Hunter in particular, are divinely inspired, like the Terrapin Station suite mentioned above. They are channelings from beyond the veil, received by someone humble enough, open enough, and emotive enough to capture them. Thanks Hunter. Keep up the great collaborations and work!

this is good news indeed. Hunters writings are most tasty. Check out what he has been doing with David Nelson and the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Great work!

Who is the real Robert Hunter? Irving Goffman accompanied by Alan Watts and Carl Jung all wrapped up in poetic genius equals a man with a mission.
