George Harrison’s first-ever career-spanning greatest hits collection will be released on June 16th. The announcement of Let It Roll: The Music of George Harrison comes just hours after the Beatles guitarist posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles today, April 14th. The compilation will feature songs from throughout Harrison’s career, from live takes of his biggest Beatles hits to his storied solo career. Harrison was twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both as a Beatle and a solo artist.

All the tracks on Let It Roll will be digitally remastered and assembled in deluxe packaging with rare and unseen photographs. The album will also be released digitally. According to the press release, Harrison’s solo hits “My Sweet Lord,” “Isn’t It A Pity,” “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” and “Got My Mind Set On You” will all be included on the set, and you can assume the collection’s namesake track, All Things Must Pass‘ “Let It Roll,” will also make the cut. Three of Harrison’s most popular songs that he penned for the Beatles are also on the track list: “Something,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Here Comes The Sun” from Harrison’s 1971 Concert For Bangladesh from New York’s Madison Square Garden. The full track list is expected to be announced soon.

The news of the remastered Harrison solo tracks comes only a week after word broke that the Beatles’ long-awaited remastered catalog will be released on September 9th, 2009, the same day the Fab Four’s The Beatles: Rock Band hits stores.

Meh. As a huge Harrison fan, this is disappointing…how about a collection of demos, unreleased tracks, live rarities, etc…

Corduroy | 4/14/2009, 5:37 pm EST

Sounds great but was hoping it was going to include original studio recordings from the Beatle years. Could they have made this a double disk? Dream tracklisting would be:
1-My Sweet Lord
2-Something
3-I Need You
4-Handle with Care
5-I Got My Mind Set on You
6-While My Guitar Gently Weeps
7-Stuck Inside a Cloud
8-When We Was Fab
9-Isn’t A Pity
10-Give Me Love (Peace on Earth)
11-What Is Life
12-Here Comes the Sun
13-All Those Years Ago
14-Taxman
15-You
16-If I Needed Someone
17-Love Comes to Everyone
18-Old Brown Shoe

Already this set doesn’t do George justice. Can’t we for once spotlight his underrated solo career? There’s no need for live versions of his popular Beatles songs. One can easily fill an 80 minute CD with highlights from each of his solo albums. A double disc would have allowed a chance for overlooked tracks to be dscovered (ie: Your Love Is Forever, Be Here Now, Mystical One, Beautiful Girl, etc). I thought this new compilation was supposed to address the problems with his two previous hits compilations but here we go again…

kujive | 4/14/2009, 8:43 pm EST

how about no-thing- I have all of his albums

heathen2002 | 4/14/2009, 8:51 pm EST

George is my fave…This really isn’t newsworthy, unfortunately..We’ve got all of these songs included on albums, compilations, in various configurations…What a shame..

Jungleland2 | 4/14/2009, 10:13 pm EST

Don’t see why this needs Beatles stuff, there are enough great songs for a 25 song cd of real solo stuff

bicuspit | 4/14/2009, 10:31 pm EST

To me this is long overdue.
They should omit Beatles tracks.
And don’t forget This Song.

Gregory | 4/14/2009, 10:41 pm EST

George has six tracks off of ” All Things Must Pass ” alone that are good enough to place on a 2-CD Greatest Hits Disc !!!!! I can easily think off the topp of my head of 38 tracks that would fit nicely on a Full Hits package of his entire career.

Dr. Blinky | 4/14/2009, 11:41 pm EST

George Harrison already has a greatest hits, it’s called All Things Must Pass.

Dick Vogel | 4/15/2009, 5:06 am EST

Am i the only person who really want: That is all on this record?

Frosted Moses | 4/15/2009, 11:04 am EST

I remember George was pretty ticked off when Capitol but some of his Beatles-performed tunes on their ’70s Best Of George Harrison album. Still, the new album is subtitled The Music of George Harrison, so I guess that leaves the door open a bit wider. I do hope they include some of his finer if unheralded solo tunes like Don’t Let Me Wait Too Long and The Answer’s At the End.

JD | 4/15/2009, 11:25 am EST

I hope it will be a 2 CD set. But if it’s only one disc, I have a feeling it will draw mainly from his Apple years, with only a handful of Dark Horse tracks(Got My Mind Set On You/ Blow Away/ Crackerbox Palace/ All Those Years Ago)and maybe Love Comes to Everyone.

Tom | 4/15/2009, 12:13 pm EST

God, FORGET THE BEATLES TRACKS!!!! Damn, the man’s got enough solo work for a two-disc set, which had better include “Bangla Desh” and “Horse to Water” from the Jools Holland album. It’s just stupid to put live versions of Beatles songs on this thing. Just start with “My Sweet Lord,” and end with “Stuck Inside a Cloud,” cos there’s enough great stuff inbetween for a 35-40 song collection.

Jarnett | 4/15/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Tracklist for this one should be:
1. My Sweet Lord
2. Isn’t it a pity
3. Give Me Love
4. All Those Years Ago
5. When We Was Fab
6. Poor Little Girl
7. That’s The Way It Goes
8. Blow Away
9. Love Comes To Everyone
10. Cheer Down
11. Horse To The Water
12. I Got My Mind Set On You
13. Stuck Inside A Cloud
14. What Is Life
15. Here Comes The Moon
16. Faster
17. All Things Must Pass
18. Any Road
19. Cloud 9
20. Cockamamie Business
21. Devil’s Radio

And there we go! Also wouldn’t mind seeing I Live For You or Brainwashed on there as well.

Jackson | 4/15/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Please…please include Crackerbox Palace. It is a great song that was a big hit, yet is so hard to find right now. Must be some copyright issue, yet I won’t buy the new album if it isn’t included.

MB | 4/15/2009, 3:51 pm EST

MB | 4/15/2009, 3:53 pm EST

OH i Forgot What Is Life add that to the solo list

Anonymous | 4/15/2009, 5:25 pm EST

I was hoping remastered versions of his “Dark Horse” and Extra Texture” CDs would finally be released as those are the only 2 albums of his that haven’t been reissued yet. They could also include his B-side, “I Don’t Care Anymore” from the “Dark Horse” single.

Peter X | 4/16/2009, 5:26 am EST

I suppose a “career-spanning” compilation is overdue however most of the stuff is available on the remastered Dark Horse CD’s, as Concert For Bangladesh, All Things Must Pass & Living In A Material World CD’s. The only things we are missing are remastered Dark Horse & Extra Texture. I guess because “The Best Of Dark Horse” has been long out of print this new set is appropriate. I agree that there’s enough material to cover George solo on 2 CD’s so the live Beatles songs will be superfluous. I would have liked an “Anthology” set ala the John Lennon box & Beatles sets. There’s sure to be plenty of unreleased material lurking in the vaults. In any case I hope EMI learn from their Dark Horse Years box experience..the CD’s I’m sure could have been expanded to include unreleased stuff & the DVD of that was disappointing due to what was missing from it. I hope this is a double..half Apple, half Dark Horse though there is talk of deluxe packaging.

get all the albums | 4/16/2009, 11:22 am EST

why just settle on these song? George’s b-sides are just off the hook too.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 4/16/2009, 11:44 am EST

I’ll pass. It’s missing too many REAL HIT SINGLES from George’s career. Very disappointing track list – most of these are “filler”. I still don’t have a Harrison “Hits” Cd in my collection…only that mini-box of “All Things Must Pass” & his huge 80’s comeback Cd album. Ringo’s the only Beatle who has come close to issuing an accurate “Greatest Hits” Comp. McCartney has also screwed his fans on his “Hits” various Cds – there are several MIA and include too much “filler”.

whalespoon | 4/16/2009, 12:18 pm EST

How come no one is listing “Crackerbox Palace” (featuring some of the most gorgeous, slinkiest slide guitar ever)or “This Song” (the funniest song George ever wrote)? Both were top 40 hits!

paradoxos | 4/16/2009, 12:37 pm EST

A set of rarities and previously unreleased tracks would have been a FAR better idea. I recall reading somewhere that the sessions for ‘Brainwashed’ yielded another ten or so songs. Will we ever get to hear any of those tracks? And, why not give us “Sat Singing,” “Lay His Head,” “Flying Hour,” and “I Don’t Want To Do It”?

Smitty | 4/16/2009, 9:06 pm EST

Jackson, Crackerbox Palace is on the remastered 33 1/3 which was released in 2004 and is still available (Amazon.com)…
I think this well be done very well with all of the hits and other worthy album tracks that could have been hits if released as singles.
Anything that helps promote George is OK in my book.

That's Mr. Mike to you | 4/17/2009, 3:42 am EST

They can’t get the studio versions of the Beatles tunes, hence the need to use live versions. My prediction is the Beatles tracks on the compilation will be only the three mentioned from the Bangladesh concert and that’s all. I would expect everything else to be the hits from the EMI and Dark Horse years and not much below the surface — and all filling only one CD. This collection is not for hardcore fans. Don’t expect any pleasant surprises (Wilburys, b-sides, rarities, etc.).

I will be extremely disappointed if the superb album track ‘The Answer’s At the End’ is not included (how was this not a single?), but I know this collection is for casual fans, so whoever is compiling it (a secretary at EMI throwing darts at board filled with Post-Its with song titles scribbled on them?) will stick to the best known songs.

So, I’ll download this and add in my personal bonus tracks for my driving in the car version. It’s a win-win.

DG | 4/17/2009, 4:38 pm EST

Some worthy songs to be sure. As a boomer who grew up with The Beatles, I always enjoyed George’s unfortunately few contributions above many of their other songs. Maybe it’s just me, but with the exception of a few tracks I never really warmed up to any of the band’s solo careers. To me The Beatles may be the ultimate musical example of the whole being more important than its individual parts.

Paul | 5/3/2009, 4:10 am EST

I’ve got an overseas version of the Cloud Nine CD (probably made while this CD was OOP here) that includes an acoustic demo version of “Let It Down” (from “All Things Must Pass”) that is very stripped down and absolutely incredible. It’s an exceptional example of the raw emotion that is so evident in George’s songwriting and performing. I hope that all true fans of George get the chance to listen to this outstanding track.

Stella | 5/15/2009, 11:16 am EST

I think it is great that they have Let it roll comming out! John has Lennon Legion and now George has his own like that. I know when I became a beatle fan and started getting to know each beatle and there solo careeiers Lennon Legion was great for me to see if i liked his music( I love it by the way) So i think it is just wonderful!! I really want to get it!

O, my sweet lord! This is so FUCKING lame! What a commercial rip of an anthology. All hard-core George fans have the 19 songs included here. I’ve made mix-tapes for friends and burnt CDs of most of these. Where are the surprises? The songs that DIDN’T make “Brainwashed”, like the terrific “Valentine”? Or the four sublime cuts that the Brothers Warner purged from “Somewhere In England,” like “Flying Hour” + “Sat Singing”? B-sides like “I Don’t Care Anymore” or Harrison’s Cab Calloway pastiche “The Hottest Gong In Town”? Or Harrison’s amazing jam sessions, rock’n'roll ragas, with pals like Jerry Garcia + Jimmy Page? (I’ve heard them – they will blow you away. Or would, were they released.) This sucks the balls of a Brahma bull. Or what about George’s transcendent demo of Ringo’s “It Don’t Come Easy”, which he produced and (w/o credit) co-wrote?

harry krishna | 6/14/2009, 6:04 pm EST

i’m listening to it now and while it’s good, i’m underwhelmed by the selections. coverage of all his “phases” would have been nice.

JRW | 6/17/2009, 10:14 am EST

According to what I’ve read, the set list for George’s album was decided by his widow, Olivia. She thought this particular selection would be a nice way of representing George and reminding people about his music. Some may need a refresher course, although I’m not sure who THEY would be. It’s neither a complete greatest hits nor a comprehensive career-spanning overview of memorable album tracks. There are too many songs missing. Many have been mentioned by others who have commented. However, since it wasn’t intended to be a greatest hits or a complete overview…no matter how Capitol is trying to make believe it is…I’ll accept it on the basis Olivia had in mind. The songs included sound terrific. They fit together nicely and do remind us of what a terrific artist George was; how his song-writing skills developed nicely and just what an inventive melodic guitaist he was. Giles Martin did a spectacular job remastering the songs. I’m happy to know he is/was involved with the upcoming Beatles reissues and The Beatles video game: Rock Band as well. I totally trust the guy. He’s doing a great “fill in” for his dad whose hearing is all but gone.
