Dave Matthews Band are offering fans a little treat while they await the release of June 2nd’s Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King: first single “Funny The Way It Is” as a free download at DMB’s official Website starting today, April 14th. The new single comes as DMB embark on their spring tour that kicks off tonight at New York’s Madison Square Garden (come back tomorrow for a full report). “Funny The Way,” from the band’s first studio album since 2005’s Stand Up, will only be available for a week free before it hits digital retailers.

Rolling Stone called Big Whiskey “DMB’s heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally” in our recent story about the new album, and “Funny the Way It Is” proves the point, thanks to production by Rob Cavallo, who previously helmed albums including Green Day’s American Idiot and My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade. “This is a good record,” Dave Matthews told RS when we visited him in the studio. “Even people who don’t like Dave Matthews Band are going to like this record — and if they don’t, then they just don’t like music.”

GrooGrux King is a reference to late DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who passed away early in the album’s recording as a result of injuries sustained in an ATV accident near the band’s hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. “There is so much LeRoi on this record,” Matthews said. (Check out photos of Moore and the rest of the band in our DMB gallery.) The band will make its first-ever morning-TV appearance on the Today show on June 5th.

Joey – obviously you haven’t been to a DMB show before. Because he plays maybe two or three “mellow” songs and rocks the rest of them. Before you spout off again…you might actually try listening to the music first before posting your non-sense. One more thing before I leave…what do you think is good music?

Rich | 4/14/2009, 7:30 pm EST

if you dont think DMB can rock – listen to Halloween and read those lyrics. If that isnt rock i dont know what is. Being the single we can rest assured its not the best song on the album (singles never are), but its good nevertheless. Finally, Carter Beauford is back! And the acoustic fabric of dmb is back.

Joey-Not all music’s purpose is to provide for an entertaining night out; some is meant to be meaningful and actually impact the way people think. Dave Matthews has plenty of songs where he “rocks,” as you call it, but this is one of those meaningful ones. If you don’t like songs that are a little slower and have deeper meanings, then don’t start criticizing them like they have no artistic skill and or value.

Many people do not appreciate fantastic musicianship at its finest. DMB…..unbelievably talented. amazing. explore…

Tim | 4/14/2009, 11:43 pm EST

Joey- let me just say…you are an idiot. It’s not a matter of taste, if you had any appreciation for true musicianship you would NOT be ripping on DMB. Now I have no problem with other people’s “taste” in music, and I for one am not a huge fan of country music, but I more than RESPECT them as musicians. The Dave Matthews Band is by far one of the most talented groups in music today, so stop being so ignorant and appreciate fine music when you hear it.

Looking forward to Big Whiskey, They’re about due for a new album, Love DMB, Seen em in concert 3 times, Love the band. They truly are a treasure to see live and I’m hoping they don’t disband after this year. Also, people like Joey should not be allowed to comment on these pages, If you don’t like a band, Don’t ruin it for those of us who do….. Idiot.

it depresses me how dumb some people are.. dmb is amazing and have been around as long as they have and are as well known as they are for a reason. they dont fade out like a lot of the bands tools like yourself listen to. their rendition of all along the watchtower, crash, crush, bartender, dreamgirl, tripping billies, holy balls i can list every one of them no matter what the cd. enjoy listening to show tunes homos… dmb is phenomenal

dave matthew band is by far my favorite band. they have a way of being vulnerable without seeming like they are crying. i am so excited about this cd coming out, i dont expect them to come out with another #41, but i know that their music is going to be beautiful no matter what. leroi is missed deeply and i know the band will want to pay the respects in the best way possibly.

“Funny The Way It Is” has an infectious beat and more importantl; profound, thought provoking lyrics about life’s parodox’s. If it isn’t all over the airwaves this coming summer shame on music fans as a whole.

Scuba | 4/17/2009, 9:23 am EST

Hey JoeySucks, don’t stoop to Joey’s level and start bashing other music. I happen to like Slipknot. Anyways, I like the new song. Out of all the concerts I have been to DMB has been the best by far, cant wait to see them again this summer.

Matthew Parrish | 4/25/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Holy shit! Funny The Way It Is sounds like the proper follow-up to Before These Crowded Streets. Can we just forget everything they released in between 1998 and now? I’m stoked for a DMB album for the first time in a decade. Wooohooo!

joey's a douche | 4/26/2009, 7:37 pm EST

Well, I see that JOEY is still commenting about the dmb album..
Guys, don’t listen to him, he’s trying to get you all worked up so he has an excuse to add more comments. Joey, I believe that rock music has turned you deaf to GOOD music. Just go cry to your mommy because daddy’s just found his new diamond-incrusted belt.
