Yeah Yeah Yeahs Blaze Through “Zero,” “Maps” On “SNL”

4/13/09, 2:25 pm EST

Before last weekend, it was safe to assume that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs would go through their entire career without ever receiving an introduction from tween heartthrob Zac Efron. But the High School Musical star did indeed intro the band’s two performances on Saturday Night Live, as Karen O and Co. performed “Zero,” the shimmering first single off their new album It’s Blitz, followed up by their sentimental Fever to Tell hit “Maps.”

While Rock Daily usually criticizes SNL for their sound problems — which climaxed for YYYs’ Brooklyn buddies TV on the Radio — the YYYs had no problem with their set. Nick Zinner’s guitar made “Zero” explosive live and Karen O’s constant smiling signaled that the rockers were actually happy to be there. Plus, check out their new touring keyboardist/guitarist: that’s David Pajo, formerly of Slint, Tortoise and Billy Corgan’s Zwan.

the yyys totally sucked on snl

Once again, it’s not the sound on SNL that’s the problem, it’s the crappy, non-talented acts that are the problem.

YYY’s sounded good because they ARE good. Kings of Leon sounded good because THEY ARE GOOD.

Kanye, TVOTR and the Jonas Bros sounded bad because they are all TERRIBLE.

I don’t think it’s quality of music that has to do with sound quality. I don’t really like YYY, but i thought they sounded really good compared to TVOTR, one of my favorite bands.

I was totally impressed by the quality of the sound for YYY, vocals and instruments were balanced just right for a change. Crew must have liked them. Great performance did not hurt.

wow–I thought they sounded terrible.

The guitar sounds far off and muddy–and as they’re a 3 piece she really needs it because her voice is really out there without much else going on.

She’s interesting to watch but I thought it was another shit SNL performance personally.

They were okay, I guess – not my thing really.

I like them a lot but whomever thinks they are original needs to listen to Chrissie Hynde for a moment…

lordbean | 4/13/2009, 7:38 pm EST

I didn’t think she could quite pull it together on SNL personally.

Steve | 4/14/2009, 7:58 pm EST

Can’t wait to see them at the All Points West Festival!!!

Jacious | 4/15/2009, 3:31 am EST

I saw ZERO on snl. You can’t help think of Chrissy Hynde watching her. Good sound and performance. I saw the Jonas bros on SNL. They were exposed as the no talents they are.

YYY*s moves the soul to go out and buy and share the experience with friends worldwide. :)

I was completely impressed with the chicks stage presence and she sounded terrific. I never heard of the group before but I will purchase their CD and catch them if they are ever in NYC. Regarding the comment from SH, you are out of mind. Here, add this to letters to your name, IT,which also spells what your opinion of yyy is worth. JACK.
