Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys, Dave Matthews Band Headlining San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival

Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band and the Beastie Boys will headline this year’s Outside Lands Festival on August 28-30th at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. M.I.A., Modest Mouse, the Mars Volta, TV on the Radio, the Dead Weather, Mastodon, Ween, Thievery Corporation, Incubus and Jason Mraz round out the fest’s initial lineup. Pre-sale tickets start Wednesday, April 15th. Get the entire lineup after the jump.
Barring an unexpected tour announcement, the headlining set will mark Pearl Jam’s first U.S. concert since their July ‘08 show at New York’s Madison Square Garden, and their first major festival appearance since Bonnaroo ‘08. The opposite can be said for the Beastie Boys, who seem to be playing every major summer festival this year, including Bonnaroo, All Points West and, reportedly, Lollapallooza. Dave Matthews Band’s involvement at Outside Lands comes as no surprise, as the group’s August 29th show in San Francisco was listed as “TBA” when his summer tour was announced in mid-February.

The headliners were revealed in an advertisement on the San Francisco Gate page, with the rest of the initial lineup expected to be announced later today on the Outside Lands’ official site.  No word whether Outside Lands will join their fellow festivals in providing a incremented payment plan for ticket buyers. Last year’s Outside Lands featured headliners Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson with an under card of Wilco, Beck, Ben Harper and many more taking the stage at the enormous, wooded Golden Gate Park. So is the “Black Eyed Pears” an actual group? I love them already…

Wrong | 4/13/2009, 10:10 am EST

Pearl Jam played Mansfield, MA after the Madison Square shows (which were in June, not July). Do some research, please.

joshua | 4/13/2009, 10:24 am EST

i dont see where it says black eyed pears…but that name sounds better than their actual one

Alex | 4/13/2009, 10:25 am EST

Are people still paying $250+ ticket prices for festivals, these days?

Peg | 4/13/2009, 10:51 am EST

actually Wrong, their last show last year was a charity one at the Beacon Theatre, NY, on July 1st…though you’d be forgiven for not knowing since it was never announced or even acknowledged by the band’s fan club.

Einat | 4/13/2009, 10:53 am EST

Yup, Mansfield, I was there… Bonnaroo also – was huge! some 90K came just to see PJ. I sure hope some EARLIER August dates are due on the west Coast this time!

Los | 4/13/2009, 10:54 am EST

To answer Alex’s question, if there’s a payment increment plan, damn right I will. For Pearl Jam, Mars Volta AND the Beasties? Hell yes.

CB | 4/13/2009, 11:24 am EST

Wow, I need to be there.

amanda | 4/13/2009, 2:46 pm EST

i AM SO GOING!!!!…

Dude Man | 4/13/2009, 2:48 pm EST

Looks cool. Good to see the Mars Volta, one of the best progressive rock bands of this decade and Pearl Jam, one of the greatest alternative bands ever. Pearl Jam sadly are starting to loose their tightness as a band with all the politics and lack of memorable songs this decade, but as long as they play their old stuff it should be great.

JAY | 4/13/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Pearl jam is one of the tightest bands ever! How many bands have you ever seen live? There isn’t to many better….

Joe | 4/13/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Hope they can keep the power on during sets this year

I’d live to see Pearl Jam again, but I won’t sit through a ton of worthless bands to do it.

T. | 4/13/2009, 6:37 pm EST

Please no more Dave Matthews. Please take your beer gut, receding hairline and loose fit Gap khakis and get lost. We’ve had enough of your white bread sound.

Chris | 4/13/2009, 7:13 pm EST

I hope Pearl Jam and the Dead Weather play the same night. I’d kill to see a jam with Pearl Jam and Jack White. That’d make the festival unbeatable and that would be tough to follow.

Smart Lineup | 4/13/2009, 7:30 pm EST

No unjam bands.

Ween shred! Sonic Youth is missing though?

hey eddie | 4/13/2009, 8:32 pm EST

I Love You!!!

I agree with those who say enough with Dave Matthews.
I felt sick when I found out Stevie Nicks’ great new song was a cover of his.
OK so maybe he wrote a good song but he still can’t sing.

JamPilot | 4/14/2009, 1:10 am EST

who cares

T. | 4/14/2009, 4:32 pm EST

Dave Matthews is a complete douchebag.

bicuspitd | 4/14/2009, 4:57 pm EST

If Dave Matthews has to be onstage every single day of his life why doesn’t he go to another country and ‘perform’ there for a few years.

Mars-todon | 4/14/2009, 4:58 pm EST

^^Uh huh

ilovedmb! | 4/14/2009, 6:05 pm EST

To all the people talking &%^$ about DMB, I want to see your lifes accomplishments. What harm has he brought to this world?? Analyzing something critically is much less ignorant than saying “DM is a douche bag”…

frank simon | 4/14/2009, 11:34 pm EST

My advice to anyone bothered by Dave Matthews is remember Creed.
There are many many worse bands out there than Dave Matthews. DMB music is actually rather sophisicated. Even the Beatles never got near the complexity of Dave Matthews music.

bravo | 4/15/2009, 10:52 am EST

DMB sucks…period

Drinkthebeverages | 4/15/2009, 11:36 am EST

DM is a douche bag

Dude Man | 4/15/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Creed were not a bad band. They were very commercial, but their songs hold up and still get radio play. Yes, we all know Scott Stapp had all the Amy Winehouse problems, but he was a very good singer. And for the people who call them a Pearl Jam rip-off( yes I’m talking about you too Rolling Stone who by the way put them on the cover of their magazine once) are just looking for a reason to hate them. I’m a Pearl Jam fan and a Creed fan, but all bands have influences and if Creed are a rip-off then Stone Temple Piolets are a rip-off too. Clearly neither of the two are. I’m an STP fan also, especially Scott Weiland’s time in Velvet Revolver.

Chrisboy | 4/17/2009, 11:55 pm EST

I’m not sure why everyone’s hating on DMB. They’ve stood the test of time by sticking around for what? 18 years? And they’re STILL selling out shows? That’s saying something. DMB for life. I’ll be the one person on here to stick up for him.

diana | 4/20/2009, 2:18 am EST

i wish them lots of luck and taya make bret so fly penthouse is 1

As a resident of San Francisco living 1/2 block from G(olden) G(ate) P(ark), I have to point out to my fellow `rollin stones’ that Outside Lands Festival was a major pain in the a$$ last year for thousands of San Franciscans.

How so?

The Outside Lands Festival erected mile after mile of chain link fence in GGP and prohibited countless people from following their daily routines for at least 2 weeks. (Just imagine having someone fencing off the public property you frequent and hiring grossly under-paid security guards to bark at you to stay away for a couple of weeks from the area you have frequented without and impediment for years.)

The Outside Lands Festival displaced the fauna and destroyed a lot of the flora in GGP.

GGP was not designed for the Outside Lands Festival: It cannot handle it.

Please: Don’t go. See it as it really is : A money making scheme that pursues a profit and does NOT take into account the daily lives of thousands of people and the activity area which they frequent.

yes! | 5/27/2009, 7:22 pm EST

can’t wait for this year.
