Billy Bob Thornton’s Boxmasters Cancel Canadian Shows After Radio Incident, Boos

4/13/09, 12:33 pm EST

Billy Bob Thornton and the Boxmasters canceled their last two dates opening for Willie Nelson in Canada just days after Thornton’s awkward interview on CBC’s Q show made headlines and led to a Toronto audience booing the Boxmasters’ performance. “Special Note: April 10 and April 11 tour dates canceled. Boxmasters musician and crew down with the flu,” a note on Billy Bob’ official site read after the Boxmasters ducked out of shows in Montreal and London, Ontario.

BBT were booed in Toronto after making a comment on Jian Ghomeshi’s Q show that Canadian audiences were like “mashed potatoes without gravy.” “Canadian audiences seem to be very reserved,” Thornton said on air. “We tend to play places where people throw things at each other. Here, they just sort of sit there. And it doesn’t matter what you say to ‘em.” Thornton later apologized to the Toronto audience, but by then the damage was done, with one audience member yelling out mid-show “Here comes the gravy.”

Rather to subject themselves to any more abuse from the audiences up north, the Boxmasters called in sick, though it seems likely they were just sick of being booed. The Boxmasters are expected to open up for Nelson tomorrow night in the friendlier confines of Stamford, Connecticut, so any Canucks who still want to let BBT know what they think of him can drive across the border. Thornton scored the viral video sensation of last week after blowing up at its host when the DJ called the actor “an actor” when he introduced the Boxmasters. Thornton at first refused to answer questions, then sat out when the Boxmasters performed live on the air.

Good, serves him right. He’s a self-absorbed jerk. And, the Boxmasters suck anyway.

Feelin' Good | 4/13/2009, 12:54 pm EST

Seen the video – good on Jian

The “drummer” actor redneck failure was just miserable – talk about not being able to handle a situation.

13 awkward minutes – a good lesson to any artist on how NOT to handle a situation – imagine if the host was Howard Stern – the “drummer” would have probably killed himself in protest.

Bring on the Stern-Treatment!

Thank you Jian – you were too nice man!

surforia | 4/13/2009, 1:03 pm EST

This guy’s life peaked after he blew his last nut in Angelina.

Huey | 4/13/2009, 1:05 pm EST

What a Diva!

Bridget | 4/13/2009, 1:09 pm EST

Dear Americans,

You can keep Billy Bob. What a buffoon. The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) airs across the country from the Yukon Territories to Prince Edward Island. Everyone in the country heard Billy Bob insult Canadians; there is no small town in the entire Great White North that would recieve the Boxmasters without booing them!

PS. Come-on Willie Nelson, you can do better than Billy Bob!

lorod | 4/13/2009, 1:34 pm EST

Dear Canadians,

Please do not judge all Americans by this idiot, he does NOT represent all of us!!! The man is an idiot and I was glad to hear you all booed him off the stage. I will be telling all my friends that might think about going to one of his “shows” to do the same!

Anonymous | 4/13/2009, 1:36 pm EST

The fact this creep could even open for Willie is amazing, but he blew it by being a complete ass.

It fits considering he had Angelina and blew that too.

This backwoods hillbilly gets some great opportunities and knows how to self-destruct really well.

The Hater | 4/13/2009, 1:47 pm EST

Good for Billy Bob.

If we didn’t have the odd antagonistic interview the world would be much more boring.

More people should follow his lead.

Delvin | 4/13/2009, 1:57 pm EST

It’s a shame that this much attention was given to BBT, it sort of overshadowed Willie Nelson, the real musician.

Kevin the Robot | 4/13/2009, 2:01 pm EST

I was just reading Billy Bob’s Wikipedia page. Of the 9 paragraphs that sum up his career, this whole incident is one of them. I also noticed that his discography list 6 albums that were released on 6 different record labels. I got a feeling he won’t be able to find a 7th.

Rick | 4/13/2009, 2:02 pm EST

Billy Bob probably thought he trashed that interview so badly that it would never go on the air. He was wrong. I’m looking forward to his next interview. If the interviewer isn’t allowed to talk about this interview, there may never be another one.

Oddjob | 4/13/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Saw the interview. I am so glad I watched it as it was incredibly entertaining and like nothing I have ever seen before. However, after watching it there’s only one conclusion you can come away with: Billy Bob Thornton is a GIGANTIC asshole. I’ve never seen anyone so delusional about how people perceive him. Too bad I love his movies, although now I see why he is so good at playing a dickhead.

fsdghdfh | 4/13/2009, 2:33 pm EST

Watching the interview i think that maybe Billy Bob was following Joaquin Phoenix’s lead. odd eccentric interviews make publicity guys.

Lynne | 4/13/2009, 2:52 pm EST

Something tells me that now his movies won’t do well in Canada either.

Xander | 4/13/2009, 3:25 pm EST

Would you ask Tom Petty that question?

kevin cramsey | 4/13/2009, 3:45 pm EST

The Boxmasters’ version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” is perhaps the worst cover version of a Beatles song ever — ever. The fact that Rolling Stone is mentioning the Boxmasters is further proof that Rolling Stone is no longer a music magazine.

RK | 4/13/2009, 4:02 pm EST

Interesting comments. An artist like any of you posting are human as well. Although I didn’t hear the interview, I can say that BBT is a very hard working dedicated man to both his film and music career. He’s doing it, actually making a living at what he loves while so many are ready to hang him ! He’s has a brilliant career and future, and if I could only make one or two mistakes in my life I would be thrilled. I’m guessing most of the above blog postings has ever had a bad day in their life !!! The funny thing is I saw how much BBT does care about his audience and I’m sure he didn’t mean it as a generic statement about “Canada”, just an observation about a particular show.

RandyRandy | 4/13/2009, 4:37 pm EST

I wrote an e-mail last night to Willie Nelsons fan club asking if he was going to continue allowing the Boxmasters to finish the tour. I got a reply this morning that the Boxmasters have dropped out of ALL remaining tour dates w/Willie. Yea!!!!!!!

Steve K, Toronto | 4/13/2009, 4:58 pm EST

RK, it would be better if you watched the interview for yourself first. You can catch it on YouTube (search Billy Bob Thorton ‘Blow Up’).

BBT was not only completely rude to the host for simply making a quick reference to BBT’s film career accomplishments in the intro of the band to the audience.

He then went on to shoot himself in the other foot by talking crap about audiences in Canada.

Heartless | 4/13/2009, 5:27 pm EST

“nobody has been playing that music in 30 years?” Hey Billy, check out The Sadies! They’re Canadian, and they smoke your band.

jennifer from toronto canada | 4/13/2009, 5:30 pm EST

What a ass billy bob is who the hell does he think he is? He is snap! a complete ass!I saw the interview he just like sat there and pulled a phoenix i think the interviewer did a outstanding job kept his cool.
It would have been funny to have howard stern interview him he would pull him apart.
I will not buy any of their albums
forget that jack.

Well, one good thing came out of all of this (besides the entertainment). It got me listening to Moxy Fruvous again. Forget the Boxmasters, Jian’s band is awesome.

vf from gf | 4/13/2009, 9:35 pm EST

i wonder what the rest of the band thinks about him losing their canadian audiences/sales for them.he’s so full of himself.i’m embarrassed that i’ve told people how great he was before.weren’t really thinkin’were ya,billy boob

pl@yer | 4/13/2009, 9:49 pm EST

LMAO, All that I can say, and I’m Canadian,”BAD DRUGS”

Croquet | 4/13/2009, 10:22 pm EST

Seems like he tried to pull a Dylan style interview, but did it poorly, and without need.
Mentioning his acting career was an innocent and perfectly appropriate thing to do.

Normal Girl | 4/13/2009, 10:39 pm EST

I have never liked BBT. What is it about the guy that was ever applauded by anyone? And back when he was married to Jolie, she was not dreamy either…just totally hot and sexy, and would certainly fulfill all the male fantasy things. Goodd thing she outgrew that phase). Be honest with yourselves, they were a super…weird couple. BBT doesn’t get my vote for anything.

Sherra, Gabriola Island BC | 4/13/2009, 10:57 pm EST

You go, Billy Bob! With so many deadly serious issues consuming our brains, your petty (sorry, Tom), rude, bizarre behaviour has obviously provided welcome distraction. So, thanks!

JD | 4/13/2009, 11:27 pm EST

What a mug this guy has.

YARZREVENGE | 4/14/2009, 1:44 am EST

I don’t understand why everyone is trying to make sense of this “Blow UP” this guys was obviously messed up on drugs and out of his mind and had no idea what he was talking about at first, he tried to make sense of it all by turning to the whole not mentioning I’m and actor thing. None of what he said made much sense. He was obviously messed up bad or trying to pull an Andy Kaufman which I seriously doubt. Anyone who took any part of that interview to heart are just being stupid, it was mindless and at parts mindless ramblings that didn’t make sense. He shouldn’t have come into that interview like that though. 6AM… the guy had probably been up all night trippin ballz, he didn’t know what the hell he was saying

fuck billy bob thornten | 4/14/2009, 3:14 am EST

FUCK BILLY BOB THORNTON!!!!!!!

mnurkxd | 4/14/2009, 5:24 am EST

Okay…he had a bad morning…we Canucks are a reserved bunch…because unlike our U.S. cousins…we’re not allowed to bring our booze into those concerts…so we happed to be SOBER!!!…we also ooze politeness..we want our seatmates to be able to see and hear the concert…

That being said..I saw the concert at Massey Hall last Wednesday night..the band has legs..and Thornton has talent…I for one have already pre-ordered my modbilly c.d.

Let’s all take a deep breath..kiss and make-up eh? Judge not lest ye be judged.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 4/14/2009, 8:10 am EST

You gotta have alotta balls, spirit and enthusiasm to front a band and get up there to play your brand of music. Some audiences will like you, some not. If a show is a failure, or negativity is aimed or comes from the artist’s performance, you hold your head up high and continue forward, more determined. Running away and hiding – cancelling subsequent dates cos you are offended[or whatever]is plain cowardly and you become a loser.

anti-thornton | 4/14/2009, 10:47 am EST

what an egotistical shithead.i don’t care what he has ever done for music or movies,an asshole is an asshole.it’s arrogant attitudes like his that drive a wedge between canadians and americans.shut up billy bob.if you don’t like canadian audiences don’t come back, loser.

bobless | 4/14/2009, 10:54 am EST

“mashed potatoes without the gravy”????because we don’t throw stuff at concerts?maybe he’ll take a pop bottle or running shoe off the head at his next show(although a plate of mashed potatoes WITH gravy would be funnier!)i wonder if he’d still feel the same?later, billy bitch

Susan | 4/14/2009, 11:09 am EST

He was such a jerk and his rudeness completely flummoxed me. I am curious how his band perceived his little tirade. Jian handled the situation like a pro.

seenthelight | 4/14/2009, 11:41 am EST

billy bob is right.we should throw more stuff at concerts.i’m going to practice for my next concert by throwing all of his cd’s and dvd’s around at the city landfill, where they belong.thanks for the good advice b-bob

proudcanadian | 4/14/2009, 12:25 pm EST

i can understand if he had an issue with jian about interview context, but slagging canadians for being “too polite”???who let that rude prick across the border to talk shit about us?get a grip billy bob, you’re not that cool.really.go home.

me | 4/14/2009, 12:41 pm EST

please, billy bob,if i wanted to listen to an ass i’d fart.what the hell is a “billy bob” anyways?

wiseguy | 4/14/2009, 12:53 pm EST

are you sure canadian concert goers are polite because they’re not throwing things,or are you just boring them to sleep with that crap you’re trying to sell as music?i’ve heard your “music” and i’d put my money on the latter.just an observation.

AntiCanadian | 4/14/2009, 2:26 pm EST

I applaud Billy B for bringing attention to a nation full of nothing but puck-slappin’, maple-suckin’ Shatner lovers. F’n a right. He did get it wrong when he said that Canadians are too polite. Anyone who’s had the misfortune of visiting their frozen country knows that their customs agents are rude s.o.b.’s

Don’t even get me started on the French fuxs in Montreal. Wurd!

anti-canadian is obviously talking out his ass.there’s no way that bbt lovin’,hockey hatin’,cousin humpin’ redneck has ever been outside his trailer park.can you even point to canada on a map?go back to beating your wife, bubba.

p.s. i hope you run into willy shatner and he beats your dumb ass

Hey | 4/14/2009, 3:32 pm EST

walter | 4/14/2009, 3:46 pm EST

billy bob should change his name to billy boob cause he is one special BOOB, what a loser his so called band needs to rethink whom they associate with, they would be better off with a hand puppet. poor billy boob………

Moe Bo | 4/14/2009, 3:50 pm EST

@Feelin’ Good – you comment about Howard Stern had me laughing. You nailed it for sure. If Stern had been doing the interview, he would have told bbt to fuck off and then ignored him entirely. But Jian was polite and the interview is a classic.

Voice of Reason | 4/14/2009, 4:01 pm EST

painting a broad stroke about any hole country of peopl is always a foolish thing to do but let’s look at the facts…
1. That Canadian interviewr DID NOT follow his instructions to not talk about Billy’s music career. Not cool.
2. Billy can’t expect fans to pretend that the Boxmasters are on TV and Radio without it having to do with him being in the band. Not cool.
3. My cousin, who is Persian, was held at the Canadian border for four hours after 9/11 simply because he’s Persian…and he lives in Canada. Not cool.
4. Mashed potatoes have the ability to be totally delicious WITHOUT gravy, if prepared correctly. It’s amazing what you can do with garlic and butter.

bstill | 4/14/2009, 4:04 pm EST

The actor did not wan’t to be perceived to be “acting like a musician”. The musician did not wan’t to be perceived to be “an actor”. Not sure Mr. Thornton knows one from the other, truth be told.

RA | 4/14/2009, 5:59 pm EST

Why do people act like that? What’s up? Great way to alienate fans and without us you are nothing Billy Bob!

Bo | 4/14/2009, 6:18 pm EST

What a joke! I love it when actors think they can “act” like musicians. I think Billy Bob and Steven Segal should unite and form a group called the “Assmasters.”
Did anyone catch BBT asking the DJ if he’d ask Tom Petty the same question???? Does BBT really think he could or should be compared to Tom Petty?? Give me a break. He’s a sissy actor that doesn’t have a musical bone in his body. Plain and Simple.

Bashiba | 4/14/2009, 6:41 pm EST

I hope Billy Bob is resigned the rest of career to making records no one buys, and more movie bombs. How about the Astronaut Farmer 2.

Beno | 4/14/2009, 7:52 pm EST

BB should attempt to look in a mirror and see that he is not superior in his acting career or his musical attributes. Now he has to live with his inexcusable behavior, we Canadians could care less. He is just not worth the press that this is getting.

Beno | 4/14/2009, 7:52 pm EST

music&lyrics | 4/14/2009, 8:06 pm EST

two things:

1. any musician who wants to be taken seriously brings their instrument to gigs. If you are an actor, who has had musical success on the basis of your acting clout, you throw tantrums and refuse to play with your band.

2. Toronto is in the eastern time zone and the show runs live at 10 am… not 6… lay off the drugs Billy

Aussie | 4/14/2009, 11:42 pm EST

Good on you BBT, dumb, disrespectful, ignorant and past whatever prime you thought you had. Although, this did entertain me for a minute and maybe you could stick your head up (in about five years) and give us all another minutes entertainment.

Billy Bob Fan | 4/15/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Wow. What a tool. I USED to be a huge fan. Now I hate his guts… along with the rest of Canada I’m guessing.

Sue Lynn | 4/15/2009, 7:17 pm EST

Billy Bob’s behaviour in this interview suggests to me that he has a mental illness. He’s acting like a 4 year old. It’s pretty clear he has some serious emotional problems. Get some help Billy Bob!

NoDouches | 4/15/2009, 7:49 pm EST

Hey Billy Bob:People aren’t very tolerant of asshole behavior these days, are they? You got what you deserved, asshole!

Chromeartie | 4/16/2009, 1:36 am EST

Hey Billie Bob, you suck and so does that crappy hillbilly band of yours. Why don’t you and Joaquin Phoenix get the hell out of the music business. Neither of you have the talent to make it further than a high school dance. If you weren’t already famous nobody would give a sh*t about you.

Yeah and by the way we know your an “actor”. Insisting that your interviewers not make reference to that fact isn’t going to make us forget it. We see you “acting” like your a musician and frankly, it’s just not working.

Loser.

Saint | 4/16/2009, 2:52 am EST

As an actor he’s a BAD musician. As a musician, he’s a BAD actor. As an interviewee, he’s an embarrassment to himself and those around him. As a husband, a miserable failure (5 time looser!). Guess we know who DUMPED who last time, eh Billy Boy. Just do what you do best…. DRINK! Stay the fuck OFF the stage, screen and PLEASE, “Step AWAY from the music!”

kathy Calgary | 4/16/2009, 12:50 pm EST

Too bad Jian was so kind to to Billy Boob. He should have poked more fun at him like Letterman did to Joaquin Phoenix. I wouldn’t have let the band play after that! In fact Jian should have said “you are not interested in talking so let’s cut this interview”. Glad the Boxmasters cancelled the Toronto tour. They are not welcome here.

willie fan | 4/17/2009, 10:02 pm EST

I think not only willie and ray should lose him, but the remaining boxmaster bandmembers should too.

Dan | 4/19/2009, 2:03 pm EST

Hey Bill Bob, you’re no Tom Petty. That’s why Jian didn’t ask you Tom Petty type questions. Wake up!

Jian, you should have just moved on and cut the interview. You handled it like a pro.

Jo | 4/22/2009, 1:54 pm EST

Billy Bob’s little temper tantrum is just typical of many actors/musicians who don’t appreciate the fans that make them who they are. They didn’t get to where they are without audiences. Besides, we wouldn’t know good actors/musicians if not for bad ones like Billy Bob Thornton.

Robert | 4/24/2009, 4:34 am EST

Why is Billy still going to appear on the Bonnie Hunt show? After all, her web page audio, advertising the Boxmasters appearance today says “Oscar Winner Bill Bob Thorton” and only mentions the Boxmasters in small text.

CH | 5/12/2009, 3:43 am EST

Billy Bob screwed up everything.
How can you seriously dis Canada?
Is it a Joquin publicity stunt or did he forget his pills?
I think Jian acted very professionally under the weird bill bob trance.
The American people want to hear what Tom Petty & Dylan have to say about all this. Billy Bob you just keep doing those great messed up movie characters.

Thomson | 5/30/2009, 4:08 pm EST

Really BBT, what another perfect example of cry baby movie star forgetting how he got to a movie star….. I wouldn’t bother with his music, in 5 years down the road he will have his agent instructing the next interviewer not to mention his failed music career. Dumb Dumb Dumb Billy Bob.

Sunny | 7/15/2009, 11:26 am EST

Well Billy-Bob, you got it right. Canadians are generally polite, civilized people who don’t typically pelt each other (or musicians) with garbage at concerts. Especially not at a venue like Massey Hall, you idiot!Best of all, we’re fiercely loyal to our country and proud to be Canadian. Here in Canada, the gravy train only flows to those with talent. I bet Willy Nelso couldn’t get BBT’s band of his tour fast enough!
