Talk Show Flashback: Before Billy Bob and Joaquin, There Was Andy Kaufman

4/10/09, 4:13 pm EST

We could scour YouTube for weeks and not find a moment nearly as awkward as Billy Bob Thornton’s interview on a Canadian radio station earlier this week. But one can’t celebrate BBT’s viral sensation and Joaquin Phoenix’s headline-making appearances without first giving credit to the man who created the intentionally unintentionally awkward interview: Andy Kaufman. In the week’s Talk Show Flashback, the comedian visits The Johnny Cash Show, where after a few purposely bad imitations, Kaufman treats the Man in Black and his audience to the arguably the best Elvis Presley impression of all time.

In other Billy Bob Thornton news, the don’t-call-me-actor and his band the Boxmasters were loudly booed at Toronto’s Massey Hall while opening for Willie Nelson in the Canadian city. “Boo all you want, but I want to say something…. We’re really happy to be here, but I need to say something. I talked to this asshole yesterday,” Thornton told the crowd according to the Toronto Star. “I sat down and talked with this guy. He and his producers say, ‘We promise you we won’t say that.’ The very first thing they said was that.” Of course, Thornton did himself no favors by calling Canadian crowds “Mashed potatoes without gravy” during the interview.

In my opinion, Billy Bob Thornton is an extremely egotistical individual suffering from narcassism, with anger management issues. I can foresee him crashing and burning in the near future. God-speed BBT.
How he happened to be on the same ticket with a gentleman like Willie Nelson is contradiction. The “booes” that he had in Toronto was most likely not the only “booze” he had that evening.

JakeS | 4/10/2009, 5:26 pm EST

Billy Bob can’t have it both ways. We wants to use the clout he has as a celebrity actor to dictate to a high-profile Canadian radio host what he can and cannot ask. But at the same time, he wants no reference to his acting career. He has not earned the credibility yet to do that solely as a musician. And he went about making his case with rudeness and disrespect. By the way, who decided that celebrities in the US are “royalty”? That just doesn’t go down anyplace else..

Sarah | 4/10/2009, 7:13 pm EST

Since when does an interviewee get to dictate the questions anyways? The interviewer loses any credibility if he only ever asks the “safe” questions.

Neil | 4/10/2009, 7:36 pm EST

BBT is in a band? Who knew?

Bob | 4/10/2009, 7:36 pm EST

BBT is an actor? When did this happen?

I mean, I’ve seen his movies. Thank god I didn’t pay to do so.

Allan Sorensen | 4/10/2009, 7:51 pm EST

Jian Ghomeshi and the CBC are not honourable people to deal with, as Billy Bob Thornton found out.

Billy is the first guy to refuse to play along with the game.

He asked that his movie career not be brought up during the interview, out of respect for the rest of the band.

The CBC lied to him in order to get him on the air.

The CBC could have talked all they wanted about his movie career after he’d left the studio.

Eddie | 4/10/2009, 9:06 pm EST

“Jian Ghomeshi and the CBC are not honourable people to deal with, as Billy Bob Thornton found out.”

I dunno. The thing is Jian didn’t talk about his movie career. It was briefly mentioned in the beginning as context. Every single question was music related. Billy only drew attention to it with his shenanigans.

I hardly think it had to do with respect for the band- I think the band members are realistic. It has everything to do with Billy’s ego.

Whyte Knight | 4/10/2009, 9:35 pm EST

Dear Allen Sorensen,

Were you in the meeting with Billy Bob’s handlers and CBC producers? Did you see a signed agreement that said there would be no mention of Billy Bob’s music career? Because if you were not and it appears unlikely you were you are simply blowing smoke out your a** and behaving as boorishly as BBT. Have you seen the interview? I suspect not because anyone who has watched it would realize the it was BBT who was the A-hole and Jian who performed with class and dignity. Please get your facts straight and not post stupid speculation based on complete ignorance of the facts. It shows you up as being as boorish as Billy.

Heather | 4/10/2009, 9:49 pm EST

Thornton tells the crowd that Ghomeshi broke the ‘rules’ so he ‘didn’t get the interview’. What the enormous tool doesn’t comprehend is that it’s he and his band that ‘got the interview’. There is a huge talent pool out there that would be excited for the chance to promote themselves and connect with fans at a comparable stage of their music careers. Instead this guys plays passive agressive turd, and throws a few insults at an entire country while he’s at it. And really, how hypocritical is it to pull this crap while calling your YouTube Channel “Billy Bob Thornton and the Boxmasters”? As if he doesn’t know that his Hollywood success is paying a big part of the rent on his music projets right now.

Lanny | 4/10/2009, 11:58 pm EST

Young up-and-coming bands would kill for an opportunity to use an interview like that to promote their band. Billy Bob used the interview to insult all the fans he was about to play for in his upcoming Canadian tour. No surprise that he got booed at the next show, and that he has now cancelled all his remaining Canadian tour dates, which I am sure his band had really been looking forward to. He sure showed the CBC.

Allan Sorensen | 4/11/2009, 12:43 am EST

Whyte
I saw the interview.
I heard Ghomeshi acknowledge that the producers, and him, had been instructed to not bring up the movie aspect of BB’s career.
It’s right there on the video.
The CBC gave their word and then broke that promise immediately.
You can see Billy reacting to that right at the outset.
Billy, who does not have a reputation for being a liar, has said “He and his producers say, ‘We promise you we won’t say that.’ The very first thing they said was that.”
They tricked him with lies.
And you call that behaving with class and dignity.

Allan Sorensen | 4/11/2009, 12:59 am EST

On another issue.
I began interviewing celebs and rock stars more than 4o years ago, and many of them remarked how surprisingly passive the Canadian audiences are.
And I knew what they meant, and I never saw it as any kind of insult. Just a fair assessment of the way it is in our culture.
We’ve got our stoners and drunkards and head-bangers but we’re generally a pretty passive bunch, quite different from Americans.
I don’t think it’s anything to be ashamed of.

I really admire Billy for drawing the line here instead of playing along as most artists do in order to get a commercial in for their product.

Billy Bob who?

billie "bob for apples" | 4/11/2009, 1:48 am EST

bri | 4/11/2009, 2:06 am EST

What to do with gravy filled balloons now BBT cancelled

tyler in montreal | 4/11/2009, 9:16 am EST

Allen Sorenson,

Generalize much? All Canadians at all live music shows in the history of Canada have been passive? The entire CBC is dishonourable? What’s with the jilted scorn? Are you equating (e.g.) a Tragically Hip show in Calgary to an opening Billy Bob act in Toronto? Did Canadian musicians ever say to you that Canadian fans are passive? Maybe we Canadian music fans love Canadian music and let loose to OUR OWN music! My generalization: you’re a hack.

Update: At Willie Nelson’s show in Montreal last night, the crowd cheered roundly when it was announced that Billy Bob et al would not perform.

Can girl | 4/11/2009, 3:49 pm EST

I feel sorry for his band mates….they don’t have the same celebrity status as Billy Bob. I think Jian should have completely ignored this ego maniac and carried on with his band mates only. In my mind Jian handled the whole thing as a consummate professional.

Lily | 4/12/2009, 3:43 am EST

Yeah he’s not all trading on his celebrity status earned from his years of acting by putting his name first, it’s probably just a coincidence or something. The normal thing to do (if you can call it that) is to not answer questions you don’t find relevant, not refuse to answer any and all questions because your completely accurate mini-bio left you feeling pissy.
I also can’t help but feel that BBT’s reception with Canadian audiences was more his fault than some Canadian failing. The last concert I went to in Canada, with many other Canadians, left me with concert injuries and I counted myself lucky. Last time I was in a bored Canadian audience it was for a really horrendous opening act. That could just be me though.

Bobo | 4/12/2009, 9:06 am EST

Billy Bob is a pompous ass, hope he never enters Canada again.

dougie | 4/12/2009, 2:54 pm EST

The biggest joke is that Billy Bob tries to pass himself off as a music historian. The reality is that he is a washed up two-bit actor who is trying to buy himself a music career. Nice try Billy Bob.

canadianGirl | 4/12/2009, 7:17 pm EST

All Billy Knob did was throw his own bandmates under the bus. He did nothing to show the CBC for not playing by his rules?
After the introduction the first question was how long has the band together….and he can’t answer that question? Really I don’t care how he was introduced it was pretty disprectful to the rest of the band. I wonder if they got in shit for playing along with the CBC??

Usually I would say that any press is good press but in this case…Billy you lose.

But I would like to say thanks to BBT for bring my attention to that hottie Jian. yum.

LoReaNNa | 4/13/2009, 9:47 am EST

Who’s editing out all the comments in here???

If we’re going to be like deleted for opinions then say so up front!

All I said was BBT is like good news 4 my “Abnormal Psychology” classes.

Now so is this thing 4 my “Political Science” classes!

Ha ha on U Ppl.

Sheryl | 4/13/2009, 3:41 pm EST

I’d like to take the high road and say something meaningful and intelligent. Ah, what the heck, Billy Boob…you are a class A, talentless hack. Please don’t cross the border, heading north that is. Maybe the Mexicans will take you. Just don’t tell them they’re tacos without the salsa! Learn your lesson, insipid one.

David Schwartz | 4/15/2009, 5:48 am EST

“He asked that his movie career not be brought up during the interview, out of respect for the rest of the band.”

It wasn’t. Did you watch the interview? His movie career was only mentioned in the mini-bio to explain who he was, and the rest of the band wasn’t offended by anything but Billy Bob’s childish behavior.
