Billy Corgan Talks Future of Smashing Pumpkins in Long Message To Fans

When the Smashing Pumpkins revealed in a pair of brief press releases that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was leaving the group and the band would hold auditions to find his replacement, the band’s leader, Billy Corgan, remained silent. Today, Corgan finally took to the band’s official Website with a long State of the Smashing Pumpkins Address to discuss the future of his band, their planned reissues and the hunt for a new drummer. The post is sharp and coherent, but of its 2,400 words, not a single one is spent discussing or acknowledging Corgan’s former bandmate Chamberlin (or his new pal Tila Tequila: yes, we noticed).

So tell us, Billy, why did you keep the Smashing Pumpkins moniker, even though three-quarters are the band have been jettisoned: “The simple answer is that when I decided to write and record again under the name the Smashing Pumpkins in 2005, I committed myself 100 pct. 100pct of my mind-body-soul to come back and make the band really be great again, and I feel in tune to SP in a way I haven’t felt in tune probably since 1995 or 1996. As they say in No Limit Poker, I’m ‘all in’. I’m not going to back out of the challenge in front of me now.”

The ever-prolific Corgan is aiming to write and record 44(!) tracks during these current studio sessions. “Right now we are just focused on about 5 or 6 songs, using them to try out some new feels to try to find a consistent foundation upon which to build this large multimedia project I have in mind. 44 seems to be the magic #, so let’s say I’m shooting for 44 songs on this one.” Those 44 songs will then be distributed over the course of two to three years, first as a steady stream of individual songs, then capping off the whole thing with a complete box set/album. The band is operating without a record contract now, so Billy’s rules go.

As for the drummer situation, even though auditions are still ongoing, Corgan has a couple guys behind the skins during the current studio sessions, but he might end up running through drummers like Axl Rose and his revolving door of guitarists. “Lord forbid I would want 44 different drummers on 44 different tracks, but I suppose anything is possible,” Corgan writes.

Fans craving older unreleased stuff like that Gish reissue may be waiting a little while longer, however, as Corgan finds himself embroiled in three different legal matters: “The band is suing EMI, 2 of my former band mates are suing EMI, and EMI is suing me because of the ex-bandmember lawsuit.” However, the legal hurdles with the record company may be cleared soon. “My hope is to have access to all of the unreleased materials (with the contractual rights clearly worked out) so that I can set a plan in motion to get it all out over the next decade,” Corgan says. “I do have all the Gish unreleased rights, but I don’t want to kick start that and by the time we get to Siamese have a whole legal mess on our hands and then have to stop our momentum. It’s all or nothing with the archives.”

Corgan also slightly apologized for the way he was erratic and unhinged during the Smashing Pumpkins’ last tour, often lashing out at the same fans that have stuck through with him for the past 20 years. “When a fan comes to an SP show we owe it to you to put on the best show possible, rain or shine. I believe the days of standing on a stage somewhere in the world feeling torn about why I am up there are over,” Corgan writes. “SP will be about peace from this day forward as well. The music WILL also reflect this shift in devotion and humble gratitude. You shall see!”

I lost all faith in Corgan

What a loser.

George | 4/10/2009, 5:48 pm EST

I think you made a mistake, he said he’s going to release the songs individually first, and then as an album I think.

Daphne | 4/10/2009, 6:24 pm EST

I believe Corgan will be as popular and amazing as he was in the early nineties.

Daphne | 4/10/2009, 6:25 pm EST

Corgan will succeed. You’ll all see.

soma | 4/10/2009, 7:10 pm EST

i am a huge fan…but im losing faith in him and the music industry…things are getting sadder….lighten up

Lee | 4/10/2009, 8:37 pm EST

I like the music, but geez, was the solo album that traumatic an experience that he’ll never brand an album with his name again?

toby | 4/10/2009, 10:50 pm EST

After reading this, I feel just as idiotic as billy corgan. hmmmm Seek Therapy!!

Jack | 4/10/2009, 11:41 pm EST

Funny how you all rip on Corgan, but yet you spend your precious time reading about him. So in the end you still lose.

I for one am looking forward to some new prog-rock jams from him. He’s one of the greatest songwriters of the past 20 years, not to mention one kick-ass guitar player. Deal with it.

Bob | 4/10/2009, 11:52 pm EST

I, for one, am looking forward to hearing some new material. I think he’s still got a couple masterpieces in him, yet. He needs to just stay true to himself, instead of releasing what he thinks people want to hear.

Eric | 4/11/2009, 12:00 am EST

I was one of the people who defended billy tooth and nail all the way up to the initial breakup. It drove me crazy when people would bash him and/or the band. And all of a sudden, almost out of nowhere, I get it. I’m one of them. From the half hearted solo album (which was decent), the public dissing of Iha, the insulting NYC shows (both!), Hyundai commercials, defenses of Ticketmaster (incredible), to the departure of Jimmy (the guy I never thought would leave), I’m done. I’m free. What was I thinking defending this guy? 12 years of brilliant music and 2 years of shamefullness.

bryan | 4/11/2009, 12:10 am EST

A revolving roster of musicians saves money. He only has to pay them the bare minimum. That way Corgan can keep more profits for himself.
But that’s not how great bands operate.

dave | 4/11/2009, 2:43 am EST

i think billy lost touch awhile ago, both with his band, his fans, and his career.
to people who say ‘why do you read these articles if you just wanna rip on him,’ understand that most of us have been a fan of his and have watched the developments of his public character over the years (i say public because i hold out hope that his private self is less caustic). so obviously we are still interested in his happenings, regardless of how disappointing they may be. SP plays too big a role for a lot of people through albums like siamese and gish and mellon collie.

In the 1990’s The Pumpkins were one of the gretaest bands on the planet. Corgan carried the day – we know that. But instead of carrying on like a band he felt it important to make sure everyone knew he was the architect of all the music. And eventually his bandmates left him. The Pumpkins don’t exist anymore.

44 songs! At least he’ll be releasing them a few at a time over the next couple years, so we don’t have to wait 2-3 years to hear them. Seems he’s going back to his psychedelic roots, working with The Electric Prunes bassist, not to mention the tripped-out jams at the anniversary shows. I can’t wait.

I Can’t belive some of the unqualified lame sh.. excuse me, crap that finds it’s ways to the comment box spaces above. I guess people are offended by talent and afraid of a creative force in music that is so powerfull that popular culture fell asllep at the wheel of contemporary recording artists that still play a little thing us old timers call “rock and roll.” B.C. is prince, nirvana, old guns and roses, pearl jam, peter gabriel with phill collins in early genisus, the police, or and all stop the parade here with No Doubt, allthough I can’t reasnable list Pink Floyd, Stones, Dylan, Zepplin and the liked of those Who or Clapton fellows, too many to try Jeff beck and even the new Beck havn’t left my mind. From this point in time and forever furthur automatically account for them when archeitectual Elvis type effectual rock and roll history shape shifting cornerstones are brought to thetable or any one ears a discussion of qualifying rock n roll history or credits of fame. Corgan is like Van Gogh here before his death. The Smashing Pumpkins played at the Spike Scream Awards. [[ Marilyn Manson was also there, along with Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance :) ]] Though it was only Corgan one other member. “Bullet with butterfly wings” was\is a memorable song.

By the way, um…HOW MUCH DO YOU HAVE TO SAY, JEFF CHANDLER? WOW! You do know that nobody’s gonna read that all, right?
~~from, your love~~

Anonymous | 4/12/2009, 2:36 am EST

Jeff Chandler, u silly man youu…I feel dumber now that i sat there to read your rediculous comment. All that, and all u said was u like Billy Corgan. Do us all a favor and take it down a notch. If the pumpkins are so fantastic, how come everyone in the band leaves? There are plenty of bands together and happy making music that rocks. Omar Rodriguez Lopez now there is a modern day Van Gogh. Billy Corgan is just as lame as peter gabriel and phill collins. Skrew you and your MTV bullshit!!!

Gish #1 | 4/12/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Gish is still Corgan’s apogee. The Gish era Pumpkins’ was greater than the sum of it’s parts. Iha is genuis. Therefore, my money is on Tinted Windows.

The reason no one can work with Billy is because of this quote from the EPIC OPtion magazine around 1990.

“It’s hard to work with someone who has a vison.” – BC

JINX

Annabeth Gish | 4/12/2009, 2:51 pm EST

amen gish#1. i was lucky enough to have caught the gish tours, and saw a decline with each tour with billy’s whining and bitchiness. The Mellon Collie show was one of the worst I had ever seen. I cant imagine how bad they were after the original lineup brokeup. Glad I never saw them after jimmy’s first exit, or darcy’s exit, or the last one which might as well have been zwan if not for greed. Its time to pack it in. Corgan is not Robert Fripp. Corgan does not = Smashing Pumpkins the way that Fripp = King Crimson. Its time to admit that the band is over.

mikemlbi | 4/12/2009, 9:05 pm EST

let’s face it, it’s over. it’s BEEN over, almost from the beginning. each album has only a few good tunes, even gish- let’s face it, no one ‘cept rince has this much ego to uber-release every single utterance and act like it’s the second coming. too much time wasted on someone who peaked 14 yrs ago.

billy = axl

I wish they would have mentioned Billy is dating Tila Tequila. I mean really, that would have put his mental state in question

Jason | 4/13/2009, 11:17 am EST

Corgan’s new direction seems awesome to me, back to his psychedelic roots, and kick-ass jams. But yeah, the whole Tila Tequila think is just…well…messed up.

C | 4/13/2009, 12:05 pm EST

Its interesting to see that 15 yrs since Kurt Cobains passing that he still comands headline features on rollingstone.com and across the world and Billy Corgan is still delusional about SP’s and his own importance. Whether its endless double album’s, 5 minute long epic’s or his new 44 songs he never understood economy in music or good old fashioned talent. Remember Kurt and forget this guy

Anonymous | 4/13/2009, 12:42 pm EST

ALL YOU HATERS—-SHUT UP!

SP FOREVER!

Andres | 4/13/2009, 12:51 pm EST

In the last tour, SP played in Guadalajara, México a great show and he was very kind with the audience, i didn’t even expect it. I don’t care if he’s a dick if he keeps making music. From Beethoven to Picasso some of the greatest artists in history were a**holes and no one complained.

Anonymous | 4/13/2009, 1:09 pm EST

I am a big fan of The Smashing Pumpkins, but I think Billy should have never tried to reunite the band.

I believe that after Zwan failed, he went back to the Pumpkins because it was easier than starting another band.

He has had his chance at music and has been very successful. I think retirement would be a good idea at this point. He does not need the money. I do not know why he is ruining the legacy of this band. Perhaps he just likes working and keeping busy.

If he wants to continue in music, maybe he should become a producer.

I do not agree with the comparisons to Waxl Rose. There is no comparing these two people. Billy never took 15 years to release an album. The only fair comparison is the use of The Smashing Pumpkins name, but that is still not an apples to apples comparison.

Billy was always the songwriter, musician, and leader. Waxl never wrote all the songs, played many guitar parts on the albums, and led the direction of the band. He does not have the same talent level as Billy.

People who make the Billy and Waxl comparison are pretty ignorant.

I will restate that I think it was a mistake to reunite the Pumpkins and to keep them going now. At this point, I still enjoy their old albums, but I would never buy their new material or go to their shows (especially given the way Billy behaved on the last tour).

All good things come to an end, and I want to remember The Smashing Pumpkins when they were a great band.

Pajo | 4/13/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Hey C, Corgan has more talent in his left pinkie than Kurt did in his whole body. 5 minute epics? 5 minutes is not an epic. Go listen to your 2-minute pop bullsh*t.

I loved the sp in the 90’s “the world is a vampire” he had such a comanding voice they were in a class all their own.I wish billy corgin the best lets see what he puts out who knows it could be genuis
love ya bonoxoxoxo:)

gr8kzoo | 4/13/2009, 5:34 pm EST

I’m a fan of the band, got to see them live once and I have to say that Chamberlin is going to be tough to replace. That guy is a phenomenal drummer and actually stood out during the live show. Almost as much as Corgan’s terrible voice. I was disappointed in the show overall (really bizarre set list and they played almost nothing of Siamese) and the Foo Fighters, who played immediately before them, blew them off the stage. And I was not a big FF fan until I saw that show.

weneedJimmy | 4/13/2009, 7:30 pm EST

I rally liked the last record, but mostly because it had that signature interplay between Billy and Jimmy. They were the core of the group and i just can’t imagine the band without him. “Adore” was the SP’s worst record, and that’s probably because Jimmy wasn’t with the band then.

Let’s understand something here . . .Corgan is a “has been”, & let’s stop with the Kobain comparisons, neither one of them is a gifted Artist, back then, or now. While I’m at it, add Dave Grohl to the list as well as Eddie Vedder. True geniuses are hard to come by, these guys are no Jim Morrisons or Freedie Mecuries, do you understand that, you thick headed morons. If you don’t know about Music, then stay the hell off the Blog

Dr. K, why are you then so interested in stories about “has beens”?
How about you take your pompous ass off the blog?!?!

Corgan is Sp as Reznor is NIN.

night train wreck | 4/14/2009, 1:59 pm EST

As long as he makes music, SP will always matter.
But, when I read he’s with Tila Tequila I thought “ok, thats it”. All respect was lost. But then I thought about it, she probably swallows. That would be worth the date.

somebody or nobody | 4/16/2009, 6:37 pm EST

seriously billy corgan is an awesome songwriter.Unlike kobain he didnt even have to shoot himself to make himself known. Know what I mean. So lets stop the comparisons bc there isn’t any. It’s like with anna nicole smith nobody really cared about her until she married the old guy or she died. As far as Im concerned kobain was a whiny hack who is SEVERELY overrated, but will be famous bc he “tragically” took his own life. As for billy, it is getting kinda sad. Enough is enough. It’s not the pumkins anymore its billy corgan. I wouldn’t have a problem, except just admit your a solo act now. The pumpkins were great for they’re time but that time has sadly passed. That is my humble opinion. One other thing Tila Tequila really.

Jeff | 4/17/2009, 1:25 pm EST

I love the guy damnt and realize how talented he is but the fact is that if he brought back iha, wretzky and chamberlin somehow it would elevate him back to where he was in the midst of Melon Collie. If he cared about his fans he would find a way to make it work and in turn would be one of the most anticipated albums in a while.

DM | 4/22/2009, 8:45 am EST

The Smashing Pumpkins cease to exist without Chamberlin. Case in point: Adore. Corgan’s songwriting ability just can’t make up for not having as versitile drummer as Jimmy. I’ve been a fan since Gish but even their last album just didn’t cut it, despite having Jimmy. It sounds like an album written for Guitar Hero.

RIP one of the best bands of the 90s.

jackitupjudy | 7/16/2009, 6:12 pm EST

the only reason why anyone compliments or rips billy corgan is for the simple fact that we love him and the smashing pumpkins like they were blood.those who rip him only do so because they feel that the perfectly woven visions and comfortabley warm blanket that they once had has been stolen from them and their lives and they aren’t man enough to admit that and the fact that this isn’t the 90’s anymore…so dont bash the corgan machine just because your still dwelling on the past…why dont you find a way to reconnect with a lost generation and create your own rift in time-none the less the pumpkins will never wake up from you…just go back to sleep

swandog | 9/24/2009, 6:14 am EST

at the end of the day anyone can play the parts the old band members played, there are thousands upon thousands of drummers, bass players and guitar players out the all just as talented if not better than the former band members, as long as billy still exists.. SP still exist

ex pumpkin fan | 11/7/2009, 7:27 am EST

“has been” sorry billy, you are like ziggy and got sucked into your mind.

i dont understand how people find a recipe for success and throw it away? ego?
