On the Charts: Keith Urban Narrowly Beats Prince to Number One

The Big News: Both Keith Urban’s Defying Gravity and Prince’s three-disc Target exclusive surpassed industry projections in the battle for Number One, but in the end a mere 3,000 copies separated the two and Urban scored the first Number One album of his career. Defying Gravity sold 171,000 copies while Prince’s LOtUSFLOW3R/MPLSoUND/Elixer drew 168,000 Target customers. Considering Prince gave out copies of his new album to anyone who signed up for his LOtUSFLOW3R Website and the the fact that the records were only available at one retailer, he was at a bit of a sales disadvantage. Diana Krall’s Quiet Nights landed at Number Three, marking the best debut of her career, while last week’s champ NOW! 30 dropped to Four. The Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack rounded out the Top Five.

Debuts: In the battle of big rap releases, UGK’s UGK 4 Life beat out Flo Rida’s R.O.O.T.S., placing at Six and Eight respectively. Despite having the biggest single of the year by a landslide in “Right Round,” Flo Rida couldn’t match the opening-week sales of his debut album Mail On Sunday, selling 55,000 copies to his debut’s 86,000. Also, Bow Wow’s New Jack City II scored 16, Gavin DeGraw’s Free claimed 19 and Queensryche’s American Soldier grabbed 25. Yeah Yeah Yeahs jumped from 160 to 22 in their first week of physical release.

Last Week’s Heroes: Jim Jones’ Prey IV Reign had the biggest fall, dropping from Nine to 40. After a second consecutive week at Number One two weeks ago, Kelly Clarkson’s All I Ever Wanted finds itself out of the Top 10, falling from Five to 14. Neil Young, Jadakiss and Rascal Flatts will duke it out in stores this week, and expect also to see an influx of country in the Top 10 thanks to the Academy of Country Music awards from last weekend.

Good job Keith. A career milestone for one of the nicest, most talented artists around right now.

BobbyfromLA | 4/8/2009, 12:29 pm EST

I think that the comment of Prince being at a sales disadvantage is incorrect. Prince’s album was released on Sunday verses Urban’s album on Tuesday. Prince had two extra days to sell albums regardless of selling them on his website or Target. It was Prince’s choice to sell from Target stores only because he wanted the lucrative upfront money. The disadvantage was on Urban who sold through normal distribution channels.

Thanks BobbyfromLA, you saved me from having to say the exact same thing. What I’d like to see are the numbers for Prince for the same days that Keith’s album was on sale (I think the spread would be bigger). With the 2 extra days Prince still couldn’t beat Keith. Great job Keith!!

Lioness | 4/8/2009, 1:27 pm EST

CONGRATS Keith!! Very deserving!

purple pain | 4/8/2009, 2:01 pm EST

Prince number 2 almost as sad as jahova witness prince

Mindy | 4/8/2009, 2:16 pm EST

Congrats Keith—great CD… all of us long time fans knew it was only a matter of time before everyone else realized how talented you are!

Soundscam | 4/8/2009, 3:38 pm EST

You’re forgetting that Urban gets $1 per sale and Prince gets more like half. This is no victory for Keith Urban – the record industry is dead.

P.S. Keith Urban fans are stupid.

fxhbxfhnj | 4/8/2009, 4:04 pm EST

The only good news in this article is that the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album is in the top 40

Dsorenson | 4/8/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Great album from Urban. Can’t believe some of the reviews are negative. What boneheads…

the Ghost of Johnny Cash | 4/8/2009, 4:18 pm EST

There is nothing in the top 10 worth buying. A washed up bunch of Prince songs and an Austrailian country singer with a name that means city that doesnt actuall sound anything like country but actually sounds like Bon Jovi, yeah
the record industry is dead………..

Sarah | 4/8/2009, 4:31 pm EST

Great news for Keith, his fans & the music industry. Defying Gravity is a fantastic album!

Jay | 4/8/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Prince was robbed by SoundScan on this one! For those who say he was not at a disadvantage don’t know what your talking about. An independent artist with no backimg from the loser record labels selling at one retailer versus a guy who is signed to a major label, has payola with radio and who sold his CD at all music outlets…think again!

Prince should be #1 for what is an amazing CD! We demwnd a recount!!!Let’s see how many CDs Urban sells when he’s 50!

countryfan2 | 4/8/2009, 4:57 pm EST

Keith deserves every success! The new album is wonderful and so uplifting! Its my happy music these days….love Hit the Ground Runnin’ and My Heart is Open!
Try it you will like it!!

Magic Alex | 4/8/2009, 5:42 pm EST

Keith Urban has a number one album called Defying Gravity??? Does it have anything to do with the musical “Wicked”? His last name means city why is he considered country and why do white trash people love the guy, he is from Australia and was on a soap opera??? You cant relate to him at all which is what all the great country artist of the past had relatability.

BobbyfromLA | 4/8/2009, 5:47 pm EST

We’re talking about sales not quality of the album. Prince is Prince, and he opted to not sign with a major label. He still has the advantage because he is in the maintainstream music and not classified in a music genre. Prince’s independent label negotiated with Target to have an exclusive distribution deal. Target and Wal-Mart are chains where the majority of “actual CD” sales occur. The major record labels sell through normal distribution channels. In fact an artist gets lose in the melee of all the other CDs that those major record labels sell as a cluster. The advantage is still with Prince – so the fact that Urban came out ahead is a feat. And, yes I do know what I’m talking about because I finance the entertainment industry.

brad | 4/8/2009, 6:05 pm EST

Keith’s til summer comes around should be played by every radio station…it will be song of the year

Yep! | 4/8/2009, 6:54 pm EST

Totally agree!
“Til The Summer Comes Around” is an amazing song from Keith!

mkcjrc | 4/8/2009, 7:47 pm EST

what?

Seth Brown | 4/8/2009, 8:16 pm EST

Urban is selling so-so records on his looks. Face it folks, if the women didn’t swoon at the sight of him or his videos, his CD wouldn’t even make the top 100.

5 years form now, Urbans CD will be in some bargain bin somewhere while Most of Prince’s will be spinning in players and cars all across America.

This is just another statement if how messed up the music business is! According to the real numbers Prince sold an additional 20K CDs that somehow were not counted. Keep trying to keep Prince down and he will continue to stick it to the man!

Agree with others…Prince should be #1!!!

80s | 4/8/2009, 8:39 pm EST

Prince should be #1, he’s a legend… like Madonna, Springsteen, Michael jackson, whitney. 80’s Rules.

hotrod | 4/8/2009, 8:45 pm EST

I have NEVER been a fan of Prince. He is a Michael Jackson wanna be. Keith Urban fans are POLITE people and do not dis Prince like you have been ripping Keith a new one. I think that Keith is one of the most talented guartists around- just because you’re little sissy purple wearing, short man syndrome can’t sell records don’t hate on Keith. He deserves this and will sell records for another 20+ years guaranteed.

Irene Olson | 4/8/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Prince’s album came out two days before Defying Gravity. Sounds like sour grapes from the pop people. I am not a country fan, but am a true Keith Urban fan.

nonamereporter | 4/8/2009, 11:27 pm EST

people people, Prince doesnt have a proper distibution deal….barley any marketing, NO radio airplay..and guess what? he’s #2 on the album charts…doubtfully Mr. Kidman..err..Urban will ever be able to do that.ever. if you could ask him, he’d probably agree with me. Prince is the real winner here folks. I challenge anyone here…who is musically open..not JUST a country fan, to listen to Prince’s new release and Urban’s new release..report back which one is more worthy of being #1.

Prince new album rocks! | 4/9/2009, 12:03 am EST

Classic case of POP vs Indie, Urban biggest distribution channels vs Prince’s F you industry distribution.

#2 is not bad for a guy without a record deal and no air play at all.

In the future every single artist will be distributed on alternative channels, record companys are going down.

Go Prince!!

Prince rules | 4/9/2009, 12:06 am EST

I agree, Prince is a head of it’s time, artists don’t need the industry anymore, unless you are as lame as Keith Urban.

Prince new album rocks! | 4/9/2009, 1:22 am EST

Prince sold more physical albums than Urban!

Without digital sales, Keith only sold 134,338 making Prince #1 in retail stores. To me, that is kind of press-release worthy to get out there.

Also…IF Prince added his digital sales from his own web site to the mix, he may win the “all in” numbers..depends what he sold digitally.

Urban is on Billboard #1 but Prince sold more albums. That’s a fact.

Your a winner | 4/9/2009, 2:56 am EST

Keiths’ a winner all the way! I know Nicole is sooooo proud of him and I’ll bet that really matters to him. His baby girl was rooting for him too along with all his fans!

Vinc3nt | 4/9/2009, 3:14 am EST

I’m a huge Prince fan and an Aussie so 1 and 2 will do me fine! Well done both of u guys. Anyway do charts make music sounds better?

pla | 4/10/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Numbers dont really matter to me talent does and Prince is the most talented of the two and I agree with the person that said who will be listening to Keith Urban 20 years from now Prince is timeless I still listen to his first album just as if it came out today.

Urbanette | 4/10/2009, 8:12 pm EST

Way to Go Keith!!!! I LOVE Keith and the amazing music he’s brought to his fans thus far. Unlike some of you, I do see Keith selling music 20 years from now. He’s been playing guitar since he was 6 years old. I don’t see him giving it up anytime soon. He has an album that was released in 1991, so that has been around almost 20yrs and people are still buying it, including me. As far as Keith Urban is concerned, you either get IT or you DON’T. And for those of you who DON’T there’s Prince, or somebody else.

Sue Ann | 4/12/2009, 12:19 pm EST

See, I didn’t really expect Rolling Stone readers to get Keith Urban. AND you know what Keith Urban fans don’t care! We love him and his music and this is one great CD, so if you don’t give it a chance you are missing out! Obviously by the sales and the fact that it was #1 on BB Top 200 and #1 on the country charts says a lot. No one mentioned the fact that Prince had 2 extra days of sales by the way! Anyway, I am a music lover and I love Prince too. I have been a fan of his for over 20 years, but Keith Urban is equally as talented and I will be listening to him for the rest of my life. AND I’ll bet my life on it, that his music will still be going strong for years to come!!

Mike that makes no sense to start with because thats implied that his album was priced at $1 each which it wasn’t so of course it made more money. Anyway charts don’t really matter, it all about the talent and the music which Keith has truck loads of.
