Lambert and Giraud Earn Standing Ovations as “American Idol” Goes Eighties

American Idol’s annual “Songs from the year contestants were born” episode became a tribute to the music of the Eighties last night, since that’s the decade seven of the eight remaining finalists were spawned (the lone holdout was Allison Iraheta, who was born in the Nineties — that’s right, not a single singer from the 1970s, people). Sadly, the hopefuls stayed pretty middle-of-the-road with their selections and wardrobe, though Scott MacIntyre tackled Survivor. And once again, the show ran long (after eight seasons, they can’t figure out how to time this thing?), meaning the last few contestants got one-line speed-round judging commentary — let’s keep that format! — and anyone who TiVo or DVR’d the ep missed Adam Lambert, which was a shame since …

Ones to Watch:

• Of course Adam Lambert performed the version of Tears for Fears’ 1982 song “Mad World” as it appeared on the soundtrack to broody film Donnie Darko by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews. It’s a stunning cover, and Lambert’s rendition brought Simon Cowell to his feet. It’s just a shame nobody started a “slow clap.”

• The night’s other judge standing-O went to Matt Giraud for his Justin Timberlakian take on Stevie Wonder’s “Part-Time Lover.” He obeyed their instructions and went back to soul, riffing his little heart out.

• Allison Iraheta’s version of Bonnie Raitt’s 1992 “I Can’t Make You Love Me” made the judges compare her to Kelly Clarkson and beg her to talk more. Perhaps they’re forgetting the first episode of the finals, when she made an awkward remark about cutting. Best to keep quiet, young Allison.

Meh:

• We fail to see what was so awe-inspiring about Danny Gokey’s gospel spin on “Stand By Me.” Gokey = still baffling.

• Anoop Desai has the same birthday as David Cook and a weird compulsion to apologize for no reason (Kara accused you of being a frat stooge, bro — you were entitled to flick her off). His “True Colors” made the judges proud, but was still a bit dull.

• Kris Allen’s judging for “All She Wants to Do Is Dance” included Kara telling him it sounded like “jazz-funk homework” and a fan yelling “you’re hot!” during Simon’s criticism. Both of those moments were more exciting than his actual performance.

Ones to Remove From Your Memory With Bleach:

• Lil Rounds, you are killing us. Rounds’ take on Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It” lacked all the original’s grit and grace — she can still sing, but she’s likely running out of time.

Thanks for the Memories:

• Scott MacIntyre, we salute you and your guitar playing on “The Search Is Over.” If only you hadn’t said “It’s my punk side coming out.”

My 2 cents | 4/8/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Danny Gokey = a smug little dead wife exploiting douchebag, with a very mediocre voice (I liked it better 15 years ago, when he sang for Blues Traveller. His voice sounds just like John Popper. Which is not a compliment.)….

Adam Lambert = sometimes good, but mostly grating flamboyant acting guy. He gets praised by the judges for his originality, but each time he took the song arrangement from someone else, usually an obscure source, but he takes the credit as if he came up with it himself…..

Lil Rounds = Totally inferior to just about every other black female contestant in years’ past. She is surviving on this show, strictly because of the color of her skin…..

Scott MacIntyre = horrible singer. creepy faces. Seemingly nice guy though. Getting by strictly on the sympathy vote, since he’s blind. No other reason…..

Matt Giraud = a poor man’s Justin Timberlake, minus most of Justin’s talent…..

Anoop Desai = i liked him at first, but he annoys me now. i think he got through, strictly based on ‘Slumdog Millionaire Fever’ which was at its height when they chose the final contestants……

Allison Iraheta = good voice. Of this batch of contestants, she’s maybe the only one who could actually make it on the radio, post-Idol. She’s a little weird, but nothing wrong with that…..

Kris Allen = actually, he has promising post-Idol potential too, in a Jason Mraz/Dave Matthews sort of way.

Well, it’s obvious the producers want Adam Lambert to win this thing. His performance was only OK until the end when he totally croaked the last line of the song, but no matter, they were running late, Simon was on his feet, clapping away like the cheesy Brit he is. But, has anyone else noticed Mr. Lambert has been getting chubbier as the competition goes on? LOL, I mean, he really is.

WE HATE IDOL | 4/8/2009, 2:16 pm EST

Attention internet, idiotic bloggers, and moronic magazine editors:

Stop acting like Simon Cowell gave Adam Lambert a standing ovation last night because his performance was good. IT’S NOT LIKE THAT, AND THAT’S NOT WHY IT HAPPENED.

Bottom line: Simon gave Adam a standing ovation because he HAD TO. He had to do something to counteract the fact that so many people could have potentially missed Adam’s performance, and to shut up the people who would be screaming that Adam “lost votes” because of the mishap.

As always, Adam Lambert Sucks. With or without a faux-genuine standing ovation.

Love,
WE HATE IDOL

Gee, I thought Lambert was awesome. He was in a league of his own.

Adam – I didn’t really get all the praise… well a quick standing O from Simon, never seen that before!… that Adam got. It was okay I guess but not genious and he did get the arrangement from some random dude, can’t remember the name.
Lil – I keep waiting for that “amazing” moment from her and it never comes… Jordan, Fantasia, Lakisha, and Melinda were better than her… they had had their “moment” by this time in the competition.
Allison – OMG she is dam good… she really does remind me of Kelly and I want to buy her record yesterday… she’s that good. She’ll be very good on the radio. She’ll have hits. Okay, she’s a little strange sometimes, they’ve had to “shush” her a few times but that’s what I like about her… different with a kick ass voice. Love her and don’t know why she doesn’t get more votes… bottom 3; come on, she’s got about the best voice.
Matt – **drools** as I watch his video and the part where he throws back his shoulder about 3 times to the music… Dam he’s hot and sexy and has a darned great voice to boot. Love him too. He’s got the charisma and talent and charm to be the next Idol… but alas, it will go to Adam because of his ginormous fan base… Also, if you haven’t heard his “studio” recordings, then go listen, you are in for a treat… this boy is ready for the radio big time… has about the best studio voice I’ve heard…
Danny – Ummmm, loved him in the beginning in Hollywood, but then slowly started my downward spiral with him and now he just annoys the heck out of me. Great voice but just puts me off for some reason so I can’t get past that.
Anoop – Sometimes really nice and sometimes not. Last night I thought it was a very nice performance. He’s cute as heck and I just really like him. Hope he sticks around.
Kris – Again, love this guy too. Just a good looking guy that I can see have some success after Idol; very marketable and a nice radio-friendly voice.
Scott – Oh Scott, well he’s a nice guy and has really been standing up for himself lately but, I think it’s time for him to go. Not a good performance last night. It’s time.

Adam’s performance was breathtaking, he really knows how to use the stage and sing heartfully at the same time. His studio recordings are very good, but that depends if you like that kind of voice. Allison is also good, but the others have become meh, and karaoke-boring ^^

RolandSnowball | 4/8/2009, 9:42 pm EST

All I have to say is Tears For Fears rule and kudos to Adam for choosing that (sweet-ass) song.

For anyone who doesn’t think Adam is amazing, you must be tone def. He has the voice, charisma and look to get him far past American Idol. You are looking at the future of Comtemporary Rock.

Allison is the best. Of course, Adam is great, but he’s been in “Wicked” (the show as a professional) so I wonder if he should be in the competion. Anyway it’ll be Allsion & Adam = Final 2
No one else comes close to these two.

marcie - your Mom | 4/14/2009, 9:41 pm EST

Can we just PLEASE crown AL as AI8???? I lurve Allison as she is a true rocker chick. But Oh My Lord – I am a 53 Mom/Engineer and have not seen such like Adam since Elvis. Born to be Wild wasn’t his greatest song – Walk the Line was – but OMG! ADAM!

Rose | 4/21/2009, 11:17 pm EST

Are you all for real? Adam Lambert sucks so bad it’s not even funny, he just screams his song it’s awful. He is the worst Duran Duran wanna be, it’s over dude, but I guess Simon likes the 80’s, who knows…

Mandie | 10/18/2009, 6:23 pm EST
