Death Cab for Cutie Dig Out Deep Cuts for Philly Tour Opener

Death Cab for Cutie kicked off their U.S. tour last night with a stop at Philadelphia’s Tower Theater, a converted movie house with acoustics ready-made for frontman Ben Gibbard’s supernaturally clean and earnest whisper. Gibbard, recently engaged to fellow indie icon Zooey Deschanel, took the stage after solid performances from opening acts Cold War Kids and Ra Ra Riot and delivered an intimate solo rendition of “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” to a quiet, seated crowd. The rest of the band emerged and hit their stride with “The New Year,” a cut off of 2003’s Transatlanticism that ended the coffeehouse vibe. Bassist Nick Harmer’s thick grooves and drummer Jason McGerr’s pulsing rhythms pushed the band through “Crooked Teeth” and “Company Calls,” with Gibbard a perpetual motion device, rapidly swaying along as he and the band built up speed.

The set list drew from the band’s entire catalog — at least one song was played from each of the band’s six studio albums. Death Cab dug deep for “President of What,” a track from the recently remastered Something about Airplanes, and introduced a few cuts from their latest Open Door EP, including the jaunty “Little Bribes” and the Plans-esque “My Mirror Speaks.”

As the set continued, the Seattle foursome stretched out, extending choruses and lengthening instrumental breaks. Narrow Stairs‘ lead single, “I Will Possess Your Heart,” featured a four-and-a-half-minute vocal-free introduction. Guitarist Chris Walla showed his chops on a solid solo during “Long Division,” which was followed by great versions of “Soul Meets Body,” “No Sunlight,” and “Marching Bands of Manhattan,” bringing the set to an energetic end.

After a long encore break, the band reemerged, slowing things down with the new ballad “A Diamond and a Tether” and a somber “Title and Registration.” Gibbard sat at a piano, delivering a hauntingly beautiful “Transatlanticism” that ended the show as intimately as it had begun.

The tour, which had planned to include a headlining spot at the recently canceled Langerado festival, runs through April and picks up again in July with dates throughout the States, including stops at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater with Andrew Bird and the Hollywood Bowl with Tegan and Sara and the New Pornographers.

great show last night. that 4 1/2 minute “introduction” to i will possess your heart is how the song goes. only the radio single has the beginning cut off.

On point the whole show. I was a little suprised, but diffinitely gracious of the tremendous energy they supplied. I’m a Death Cab fan forever now.

I took my girlfriend to the show last night. Transatlanticism put the cap on the show. Pure perfection.

My, how U.S. centric we are at the offices of rollingstone.com. Philly was actually not the tour opener for Death Cab but Toronto. Set list seemed identical (boo) and show itself was uneven. Ra Ra Riot and Cold War Kids were strong openers.

Why does everyone get off to Death Cab? Cause there Indie there cool? Why do I care what there setlist was?

Not Thomas | 4/9/2009, 2:55 pm EST

They’re* Their*

And where do you get off skipping grammar class?

Anonymous | 4/9/2009, 3:00 pm EST

Hey Thomas why don’t you learn to spell they’re/their (not there) before you bash anyone else.

Also Not Thomas | 4/9/2009, 3:07 pm EST

Seriously, dude, before you go whining all over the place, go back to sixth grade for a few weeks. And maybe- just maybe- people like them because, hmmm, I dunno, they play good music? Whoa, crazy thought.

Wasn’t at the show, but saw one last year with a similar setlist and it was fantastic. Hoping to catch them later on the tour.

nice article. awesome band. thanks for including the set list.

Ben | 4/9/2009, 4:38 pm EST

That was a really great show, I was there. “Transatlantism” was practically sacred in how intense it was performed, and made a great end to the show.

Kathleen | 4/9/2009, 6:26 pm EST

Dude i went to that show as a cold war kids fan and left as a death cab for cutie fanatic they were soooo good, ben gibbards voice just radiated through my soul it was amazing!

Murray | 4/9/2009, 6:38 pm EST

I was at the show and it was great. I just wish there was more time for opening bands, 30 – 40 minutes is not enough, maybe have a 7:00 start instead.

Anonymous | 4/9/2009, 6:58 pm EST

They started the tour in Toronto on Sunday night and the show was fabulous. Definitely worth my while. This band is so refreshing in their musicianship and the musicality of their songs.

“As the set continued, the Seattle foursome stretched out, extending choruses and lengthening instrumental breaks. Narrow Stairs’ lead single, “I Will Possess Your Heart,” featured a four-and-a-half-minute vocal-free introduction.”

It sounds like the reviewer is implying that the four and a half minute intro is “extended” or “lengthened”. The album version of this song has a 4 and a half minute intro, and every time they’ve played it live they play the full song. This is nothing exciting, and makes the author of this article lose his credibility.

Ken | 4/9/2009, 9:42 pm EST

I was there, too. Great freaking show. While the I Will Possess Your Heart thing is probably just a mistake, there were a ton of songs that were longer…that solo at the end of Long Division was sick.

Joe | 4/10/2009, 7:08 am EST

Just curious, did anyone in the band talk to the audience? I love Death Cab, but when I saw them in Toronto last summer and Osaka this past February, they barely acknowledged the crowd.
That said, minus the EP tracks, this set list was very much like the one from Osaka, so I’m sure it was a fantastic show.

kevin | 4/10/2009, 9:49 am EST

davidson, nc (charlotte) was a fantastic show (last night 4/9). ra ra riot was great but would have liked to see cold war kids off the tour and give more stage and time to rrr. ben talked all night to the crowd including the comment on the perfect place where north carolina is…”go north and the coffee gets bland and weak, go south and there is no vegetarian places…”.

J Chu | 4/10/2009, 10:24 am EST

Thanks for the article, I’m going to the show tonight in Louisville. It’s nice to know that they are jamming songs from all of their albums. Can’t wait to hear the track from “Something About Airplanes.”

Amanda | 4/11/2009, 4:10 am EST

Im from NY & saw the show that night. It was great! Although I missed Cold War Kids AND RRR…my friend and I got lost (UGH). I was counting on seeing CWK, but even though I missed them, I was happy to see Death Cab.

dinkydao | 4/11/2009, 1:06 pm EST
