Billy Bob Thornton Attempts To Outdo Joaquin Phoenix In CBC Interview

4/8/09, 5:24 pm EST

CBC’s Q Show host Jian Ghomeshi learned a valuable lesson when interviewing the Boxmasters, the band led by actor Billy Bob Thornton: Never refer to Thornton as an actor. Ghomeshi’s introduction, in which he refers to Thornton as an “Oscar-winning screenwriter, actor and director,” for some reason infuriates Thornton (watch his eyes roll) and makes the actor come down with a serious case of the Joaquin Phoenix, resulting in one painfully awkward but hilarious interview.

“Billy Bob, you guys formed only in the last couple of years, right?” Ghomeshi asks Thornton. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” responds Thornton. Ghomeshi later asks Thornton what Willie Nelson is like, since the Boxmasters are opening for the Nelson on tour. “I’ve never met him, I don’t really know him,” Thornton responds. At first we’re led to believe that Thornton is just spaced out, but following an incredible off-topic story involving Thornton’s subscription to a monster magazine — the question was what music did he like growing up, fast forward to the 5:10 mark — we learn that Thornton is just being a difficult interview because Ghomeshi had the audacity to introduce him to the radio audience as an actor, despite Thornton telling the show’s producers not to mention his other career.

From there, Ghomeshi and Thornton verbally spar on air, finally call a truce, continue with the interview and the Boxmasters go on to perform one of their songs… without Thornton’s drumming, as the actor stood cross-armed watching his bandmates play. (The performance wasn’t included due to rights issues but you can catch the CBC full audio stream here.) We have to give credit to Ghomeshi for keeping his composure throughout the tumultuous interview, which after a few more viewings might edge out Joaquin’s Letterman performance to win the Oscar for Best Actor Acting Awkwardly Promoting Their Music Career.

Billy Bob Thornton came accross as a complete Narcisiistic, egotistical ass. No one would even give a shit about this band if BBT wasn’t in it. The fact that I wasted 13 minutes listening to it makes me mad, but be rest assurred, I will never fork out a cent to hear this band or see a BBT production, Should he ever act again.,..it seems to anger him! What a complete jerk. I hope he gets bood off the stage the rest of his tour.

Dan in Toronto | 4/8/2009, 6:06 pm EST

What a fool and celebrity bully Thornton is. I came into the broadcast midstream and so didn’t know that the guy rude guy was a “big deal actor.” It’s one thing to not like the questions and another to attempt to deliberately sabotage the interview by giving long off-topic answers, which is what BBT attempted to do. Glad I’m not in THAT band.

WTF | 4/8/2009, 6:18 pm EST

He should have asked BBT about Brangelina just to see if his head exploded.

Jordan in Canada | 4/8/2009, 6:18 pm EST

What a jerk. The radio host is trying to promote his band and give them the opportunity to generate some publicity and BBT sits there like a giant dick. I feel for the rest of the band, I really do.

B | 4/8/2009, 6:28 pm EST

he keeps comparing himself to tom petty. i wonder if he realizes that he has accomplished nothing close to the success that tom and the heartbreakers have had. he is nowhere near the songwriter tom is. tom petty made music full time for years before he got any national exposure. thornton should be grateful.

Reggie | 4/8/2009, 6:48 pm EST

Wonder if the Boxmasters were happy before Billy Bob came along…
See’em hang their heads when he said he didn’t know how long they’d been together?

BBT-tokes | 4/8/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Honestly, Jian is a self-serving idiot in the best of times but I appreciate his calm during. I would have told Billy Bob to stick it up his arse, but then, I guess that’s why I am not a host of a radio show.

WL | 4/8/2009, 7:02 pm EST

Complete and utter ass. You are not even in the same stratosphere as Tom Petty, you arrogant SOB.

Anonymous | 4/8/2009, 7:12 pm EST

Billy Bob T proved himself to be an ASS. His band members, who were clearly not comfortable, should more on. They will do better without him.

Jeff Davidson | 4/8/2009, 7:50 pm EST

Thornton should be pleased that we don’t throw stuff at concerts after that crap.

Craig | 4/8/2009, 8:11 pm EST

BBT is an idiot!!!!

Darren in Canada | 4/8/2009, 8:36 pm EST

Billy Bob’s not man enough to address the issue and quickly move on. Instead he acts like a spoiled kid who didn’t get his way. Poor guy – he clearly has some serious issues and is not very happy with life. Is it a coincidence he has five failed marraiges?

dave | 4/8/2009, 8:39 pm EST

fuck you billy-bitch

Leslie in British Columbia | 4/8/2009, 8:43 pm EST

Thornton personifies the ‘celebrity as waste of space’ syndrome. By trying the patience of all Canadians who listened to this ‘interview’, he effortlessly exited that side door to oblivion, at least in my country. His bandmates tried to pick up the pieces, but obviously really need to move on, leave this goofy albatross far behind. Pretentious prick – Billy has always been one, no one can dispute that. But he’s outdone himself this time. So long Billy Bob – and good riddance buddy.

The Hater in British COlumbia | 4/8/2009, 9:00 pm EST

I liked his responses. I love it when an interviewer and guest have antagonism. It makes the interview a million times more interesting then the usual pre-conceived P.R. boring stuff.

Narduar the Human Serviette knows this.

Mage | 4/8/2009, 9:06 pm EST

Interesting when BBT goes off like an idiot the rest of the band have their heads down. I feel for the rest of the band.

Mage | 4/8/2009, 9:08 pm EST

oh and the interviewer handle the situation really well. Kudos!

Not fooled | 4/8/2009, 9:20 pm EST

He’s just making more publicity for himself by being a jerk.

The interviewer is exactly right that they are getting exposure because he is already a celebrity. No 2 year old nobody band without a celebrity in it could walk into a radio interview making demands and giving an interviewer crap the whole time. What a self-absorbed piece of crap he made himself out to be.

Terri - Nova Scotia | 4/8/2009, 9:43 pm EST

I could not believe how rude and petulant Billy Bob was in the interview – he acted like a two year old – it was painful to listen to. I will NEVER purchase one of his CD’s.

christy | 4/8/2009, 10:00 pm EST

what a douchebag – the only reason they’re being interviewed is BECAUSE of his history as an actor. get a life.

Lisa | 4/8/2009, 10:12 pm EST

Wow. Amazingly huge asshole. I will never buy his music, go to one of his movies (oops, I mentioned his “acting”!), or watch him on a talk show ever again. Sounds like it’s rehab time for Billy Bob.

SFB-USA | 4/8/2009, 10:13 pm EST

Dearest BBT,
Thanks for making a hugh ASS of yourself on a show that clearly “gets it” when it comes to publicity for you and your bandmates. Just when I thought you had a redeeming value to society, I found myself to greatly mistaken. What credibility you had with me (I realize w/ your ego you don’t need fans) was washed away with your drug induced infancy. Thanks for making the South look good! No more cash for you from this fan.

Chad | 4/8/2009, 10:27 pm EST

I’m wondering how many of these type of interviews Billy has done… perhaps hundreds? Do you think he’s aware the audience would/might want some context? Billy is all too aware of this and still made the producers aware that he didnt want his acting career mentioned. He has that right. But Ghomeshi mentioned it ANYWAY. Ghomeshi knew better. The interview was about the band and Ghomeshi broke the rules going into the interview. Billy was right to be pissed.

Jane Cudmore | 4/8/2009, 10:36 pm EST

You should have continued to listen to hear the next Jian and next guest Albert Schultz process the interview.

The whole interview was one of those great moments in radio.

Paul | 4/8/2009, 10:44 pm EST

Just goes to show there is no such thing as bad publicity. The interview would have gone unoticed had not BBT had his tirade. I guess we need personalities like him to raise our emotions about art and its creators otherwise it would become just part of the giant humm.

Brangelina | 4/8/2009, 10:46 pm EST

WTF’s Brangelina comment almost made me fall off my chair. It would have been PERFECT. For sure BBT would have punched Jian in the face and Jian’s ratings would have gone through the ceiling.

Jian stroked him a bit too much, after all who are the boxcutters without BBTs money and status…and he doesn’t want it mentioned. Too bad bud. Live in the real world like the rest of us.

mako2009 | 4/8/2009, 10:52 pm EST

I don’t buy this for a second. Whatever is going on, that was without a doubt in my mind, an act.

tom petty | 4/8/2009, 10:53 pm EST

I asked him to refrain from mentioning my name during interviews. Oh Billy…

BulldoggMom | 4/9/2009, 12:42 am EST

I will never so much as RENT one of Billy Bob Thornton’s movies again as long as I live. What a complete MORON that man is. He had his little 2-year-old’s temper tantrum, showed his complete ignorance, and made himself look even more of an idiot than he did before; and who would have believed that even possible. How embarrassing for his band mates. I hope his music career completely tanks as well. I hope all of America and the globe, in fact, boycotts his music in any way, shape, or form. He deserves to be completely ignored as a musician. I feel bad for his band mates, as they don’t deserve it. I got halfway through watching the interview and had to stop to comment. I will echo the comment above … yes, what a complete jerk. May his “albums” sit in stores unsold and collecting dust. May he never make another movie. I hope all movie-goers completely refuse to send any cash his way at ALL. I never did like him much, but after this interview, I would never see one of his films, buy one of his albums, or even so much as buy a magazine subscription from him. I hope he chokes on his ignorant attitude. The creep.

Performer | 4/9/2009, 1:00 am EST

I listen and watch and pay attention to other people when they take the time to express themselves, because there is always something to learn, especially during a performance. I learned that this interview was the object of the billy bob persona and its attempt to consume all the attention that could be had. The character itself was so full of its performing, that it refused to allow the real musical artists to teach me anything about the bands music or even its members. The billy bob persona was so focused on trying to jack this interview that it ruined my chance to hear what the band had to say. After claiming that it was some sort of music historian, it stole the interview from the music. The billy bob character was so adamant and so focused on “billy bob” that the performer did not even realize it was thankfully and cleverly dismissed by the host just before the actual band began to play. This I would not have noticed if I did not have the luck to watch the clip…; the billy bob character, apparently lacking the skill to participate, actually moved to another seat when the band got up to play and sat down as if still welcome in the room….. The host had the grace to signal billy bobs most welcomed departure by expressing thanks and offering an expression of good fortune. What I did manage to learn is that the billy bob persona is so full of itself there is no room for music, no room for talent, no room for manners, and no room for an audience. I did learn that the three performers I listened to during the actual interview, this unfortunately missing from the clip, are worth listening to. I hope they produce an album without a drummer so that I can listen to them more because I will not be attending, purchasing, watching or facilitating any performance of any kind that may include the billy bob character…., that almost sounds as though I might miss out on something!. Thank you “Q”, as always, great! I listen every day, and will continue to do so. I look forward to an interview with a real multi talented musical guest…, Will Smith…, Bruce Willis…, you… :) Sincerely, Patricia Williams

Mook | 4/9/2009, 1:01 am EST

I feel sorry for the rest of the band, he got them squirming.

Sam | 4/9/2009, 1:14 am EST

Hey BBT go fuck yourself you arrogant prick.

Kent | 4/9/2009, 1:25 am EST

Fucking Brilliant. Classic garbage from another actor/wannabe musician. It doesn’t get much better than this. “Joaquin, you should be taking notes.”

James Radio | 4/9/2009, 1:30 am EST

For all you southerners having the good fortune to hear Jian Ghomeshi for the first time, give Billy Bob some credit. I am sure Bill Bob will be back to explain himself once he gets wind of how highly Jian Ghomeshi is respected by his peers in the music, film, theater, …, well I guess every arts community, – in North America anyways.

He’s one of the best. Jian that is.

giveme abreak | 4/9/2009, 1:45 am EST

“…pretty much a music historian, so…”

Hahaha! Too funny…

BBT’s “talent” is kind of like an empty plate without any mashed potatoes or gravy on it…

Shirl in BC | 4/9/2009, 2:23 am EST

What a loser. If he was hoping not to get attention about being an actor, why did he bring on so much attention?
I would never buy his record. And I tend to not go to movies he’s in too. And he’s so darn ugly.

Lovin BBT | 4/9/2009, 2:43 am EST

Great example of idiocy in action.

Dave | 4/9/2009, 2:52 am EST

Area 51: Celebrity Experimentation: Brainwashing A302:

4 Targets. Phoenix, Thornton, two others yet to be named.

Old Fart Billy | 4/9/2009, 3:32 am EST

I’d like to see the Canadians throw stuff at him for the remaining gigs!
The self proclaimed music historian would then be part of music history … Just not the history which this self-absorbed, whiny, media whore would have written if he was carrying the tune.

Marlboro Man | 4/9/2009, 3:51 am EST

Billy Bob just needed one of my cool and relaxing cigarettes. He just needed a good smoking break.

living in T.O | 4/9/2009, 5:30 am EST

And we should care about this idiot because he is a music historian?? That was entertaining for the wrong reasons.
Just read a review for the Boxcutters for a concert in Alabama. BBT actually took questions from the audience about his acting career.
I guess he has to feed his ego sometimes.
good luck with the shitty music your no TOM PETTY!

Peter in Canada | 4/9/2009, 7:24 am EST

I wonder what it’s like being in that band. It must be a nightmare working with BBT!When he went into that speil about monsters, I wonder what was going through their heads. One of the impressions I get is that they were’nt too well received by Canadian audiences and he’s pissed.

Pat in Niagara Falls | 4/9/2009, 7:55 am EST

This is just another example of why society should walk away from these hollywood egomaniacs. They think they say whatever they want and we will all be little robots and listen to them.I will go to there movies and be entertained but when it come’s time to listen to them in the real world…I will sit back and read a good book.Get a life people. These hollywood idiots and so called actors are just here for entertainment. Not to be taken seriously. They just ACT.

willie g | 4/9/2009, 8:56 am EST

I always wondered what happened to the Hansen Brothers after SLAP SHOT! They joined up with Billy Bob and formed a crappy band!

Big fan in Chicago | 4/9/2009, 9:01 am EST

Jian Ghomeshi?? Bring back Moxy Fruvous!! What a great band that was. Does anyone here in the U.S. remember them?

fraz | 4/9/2009, 9:06 am EST

Billy Bob Thornton is a brilliant actor and I have loved almost all of his movies. After seeing this interview I now know he is also an immature, ignorant, self-absorbed, redneck asshole. Oh, and a very mediocre “musician”.
Kudos to Jian Ghomeshi for putting up with this sucky-baby. If I ever see BBT I’m going to punch him in the throat on behalf of all Canadians. And then tell him to grow the fuck up. Jackass.

Gravy | 4/9/2009, 9:15 am EST

BB “acting” like a baby. His band looked drained, he must be a joy to tour with.
Would Tom Petty or Willie Nelson act like that and have nothing intelligent to say?

When all else fails, maybe he’ll release a BBT version of Guitar Hero. You can wet yourself onstage, refuse to play, sing like Slingblade, drink like Bad Santa and collect Monster Mags for points.

Now that’s gravy!

Billie | 4/9/2009, 9:17 am EST

Billy Bob is a no talent back woods hick. I don’t think this fool should consume air time when a truly talented artist could be interviewed. Billy Bob is so stupid he doesn’t realize that the only reason he was on the air was due to his acting career.

jaxi | 4/9/2009, 9:47 am EST

As a former BBT fan and now total JG fan…Let me say…JG has real class. I felt for him during that interview but what I felt more was disgust in myself for ever spending a penny to go see a BBT movie.
I’m thinking BBT’s hair plugs might be too tight and affecting oxygen reaching his brain. What a tool!!!

DDT | 4/9/2009, 9:55 am EST

I second Kathryn in Canada. BBT won’t get another cent from me either. Jerk.

Peter | 4/9/2009, 9:55 am EST

BBT = wanker
Wanker = a pejorative term of English origin, common in Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and British-influenced territories like South Africa. It initially referred to “one who masturbates” but has since become a general insult. It is synonymous with tosser.

paulonious | 4/9/2009, 10:06 am EST

Chad, you are wrong. He was probably told not to mention it during the interview, but he mentioned it only in the context of the introductions. And I also have to laugh at all the people here that are boycotting his work. Gimme a break. Liking an artist/actor is a prerequisite to you enjoying their work? That’s laughable. I bet you wouldn’t like 80% of the people you support musically/artistically, yet they just have the good sense not to show the real selves to the media.

paulonious | 4/9/2009, 10:08 am EST

my below post notwithstanding, BBT is a child. No two ways about it. Most other artists would never have acted out that way if they didn’t like the intro. Immature hack.

chipper | 4/9/2009, 10:08 am EST

What a d-bag!! Radio guy who is probably making next to nothing trys to interview the big shot millionaire actor who is pretending to be a musician. Billy Bob couldn’t have been more of a jerk to the poor guy.

Since when is acting like an ass, the new cool?

RV | 4/9/2009, 10:22 am EST

I never paid attention to what this idiot did, have never seen the movies he was in, but I will certainly make sure to avoid anything that he participates in going forward. What a waste of air.

HermanZeeGerman | 4/9/2009, 10:41 am EST

Dear Bob,

Your music lacks any originality whatsoever.

Your acting is often brilliant.

Stick to acting. I don’t think you’re quite cut-out for the music biz if you can’t handle a simple interview.

There’s plenty of talented, gifted, dignified musicians making a “go” at it, please get the hell off stage…

Poutine with Gravy | 4/9/2009, 10:48 am EST

CNN,LATimes,Reuters,BBC,Perez Hilton and Howard Stern, who used up an entire half hour of his show on this joke, etc., have now picked up this story. Congratulations Billy Bob-you are the master media whore!
What I would have given to hear what his band mates had to say to him on the way back to the hotel!
Wonder if Tom Petty’s texting BB “Don’t DO ME like that!” as we speak!

Sheesh!

Truth in naming | 4/9/2009, 10:51 am EST

His name is Billy Bob, ’nuff said. If he weren’t an actor his band would get ZERO airtime/attention. It’s a shame how his ego is holding his band mates back. They will be forever known as the “Billy Bob Guys” now.

craig f | 4/9/2009, 10:52 am EST

Billy Bob, you embarrassed yourself and your band mates. i watched you at massey hall and your band would be better off without you. You think you should be treated like Tom Petty? dude, you’re a fine actor but Petty’s musical accomplishments are in the stratosphere and you’re barely off the ground. Ghomeshi, nice job dealing with this prick.

marcel in b.c. | 4/9/2009, 11:01 am EST

i hope willy nelson drops bbt on his tour and gets tom petty to open for him lol

Anthony | 4/9/2009, 11:14 am EST

I bet Jian has sold more records in his Moxy Fruvous days that BBT has done. I listened live to it and I thought was he on something, but alas, he is just a tool.

Chuck Currie | 4/9/2009, 11:27 am EST

It’s about time that a guest put Jian Ghomeshi in his place. Ghomeshi is an embarrassment to Canada, a relentless low-brow inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity. He can’t even read the opening billboards properly. He finds himself much more fascinating than his guests. Guests only exist for him to insert jejune commentary and interrupt with his “much more knowledgeable” and self-important opinions. I find myself wanting to smack him, and I wish Billy Bob had.
To have the irreplaceable Eleanor Wachtel, one of the greatest interviewers in the history of radio whose toe-nail clippings are more intelligent and wittier than Ghomeshi in his wildest egotistical dreams, lose her time slot to this pseudo-intellectual is a national disgrace.

Jymn | 4/9/2009, 11:38 am EST

Good to hear someone put wimpy Ghomeshi in his place. That guy is one pompous idiot. BBT was just giving a bullshot artist some of his own medicine.

Gabby in Toronto | 4/9/2009, 11:40 am EST

BBT–you give hillbilly morons a bad name.

PDC | 4/9/2009, 11:47 am EST

LOL… To even mention Tom Petty in the same breath as the Box Masters laughable at best. Petty is a musical genius. BBT is an actor with a hobby. Shove off Billy Bob, you’re a d-bag.

Billy Knob | 4/9/2009, 12:13 pm EST

Wow, what spoiled brat.
Someone call the whaaaambulance, Billy Bob had his feelings hurt being refered to as an actor. SHeesh

Canucklehead | 4/9/2009, 12:34 pm EST

I would like to thank BBT for taking the job of a real musician. Who needs real musicians on tour when we can have train wrecks like him? Maybe for his next act, he can vomit upon himself, and fall out of his chair, mewling like a small animal denied it’s bottle of Jolie Milk. he could have mentioned he didn’t want to talk about his other activites, but instead rose to the occasion and became a parody of an egotistical idiot. Truly classic. Too bad he’s torpedoes the carreers of the other three guys, but they are real musicians….who cares…right? Not BBT.

Chuck Currie | 4/9/2009, 12:38 pm EST

Sorry, my last comment was very Billy Bob of me.

Brian in Richmond | 4/9/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Thornton is way too cool for school baby! Maybe he thought pouting would get a clip played on Entertainment Tonight.

Personally I would have focused the interview on the real talent in the room – Unknown Hinson! The King of Country Troubadours and the voice of Early Cuyler on Squidbillies! That’s right, yeh, Unknown probably smacked Thornton into a fetal ball when they left and then ran him over with the dang truckboat truck. Wooo daddy, bring on the canadian fishcamp wormerns!

Tim in Toronto | 4/9/2009, 12:48 pm EST

Way to go Billy. A guy with as much talent as you have, does not need to be such an a hole. Say you are dissapointed with the introduction and move on. Don’t bring your band mates down with you. They looked real comfortable
after you threw your hissy fit, at least allow them to shine as musicians. They could get a drum machine and it would have more personality them you. Take your drum sticks and shove them up your ass!! An ex fan from Toronto where we don’t sit on are hands, when we are cheering for somebody with class.

The Hater | 4/9/2009, 1:10 pm EST

Americans, riddle me this:

You put gravy on mashed potatoes. Right?

So what is so insane about putting gravy on french fries?!?!

Spoo | 4/9/2009, 1:11 pm EST

One…if he was so upset he should man-up and say so right from the start rather than all that passive aggressive meandering shit he pulled

Two…comparing himself to Tom Petty is a joke, one is a rock legend and the other is an actor who happens to play music moderately well(just cause you played all your life, it doesn’t make you a musician- you have to earn that title Billy Bob)

Notary Sojac | 4/9/2009, 1:18 pm EST

What a fucking douche.

David | 4/9/2009, 1:50 pm EST

Surely Willie Nelson will kick the Boxmasters off the tour. Having a d-bag like Thornton sharing the same stage is beneath Willie’s dignity.

Commenter | 4/9/2009, 1:50 pm EST

Wow, what a jackass.

Jen | 4/9/2009, 2:16 pm EST

Why doesn’t he just say so at the beginning that all he wants to talk about is his crappy music. Billy, you suck. There was a song written about you though it is called “Jerk”.

M in Canada | 4/9/2009, 2:24 pm EST

Can anyone name BBT’s last movie? I didn’t think so. This might explain his attention getting performance.

Glen: Kirkland lake | 4/9/2009, 2:27 pm EST

We should kick that F****N dickhead out of Canada, At least boo him at the shows. Better yet, leave when the moron plays.

Bob | 4/9/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Well he sure got a lot of mileage out of it. I dare say every single person who listens to Q posted here. Who cares about BBT. And to the person who thinks Bruce Willis is a great musician…I have a caseful of his vinyl…I think it’s called The Return of Bruno. Sux as much as BBT. All yours for cost of postage. Maybe the two of them can form there own band called Duelling Assholes.

Nicole | 4/9/2009, 2:39 pm EST

What a Diva!!!!! Hey Billy Bob, all your musician cred flies out the window when you pull an immature and obnoxious stunt like this, and then on top of that you don’t have the brains to bring a small drum kit to perform with…. What an ass! No real musician would go to a music interview/performance and not bring at least a snare drum.. LAZY AND UN-PROFESSIONAL!!!!!

Jason in Vancouver | 4/9/2009, 2:51 pm EST

It was hard to tell if his bandmates were incensed at Thornton
’s charades or at the interviewer. They should replace Billy Bob with a real drummer who does’nt walk around with some sort of alien life form on his head

MG | 4/9/2009, 2:53 pm EST

I really don’t have any issues with BBT’s delusions of grandeur. We all have them sometimes, the only difference is that he has the dough to follow them (I know if I quit my job to be a musician, I’d certainly starve). Nor do I have issues with his being a grouch(you have to admit, it was kind of entertaining). The truly sad thing is how everybody’s blowing this way out of proportion. Does it really matter that some space cadet actor went off on his interviewer? Does anything that entertainers do really matter? Um, No.

beeblebrox | 4/9/2009, 2:56 pm EST

seems to me bb was trying very hard to NOT be the focus of attention for the interview, and allow his band mates a chance to speak. nuff said.

F from Toronto | 4/9/2009, 3:10 pm EST

It’s so hard to break out in show biz…same with the music biz. I don’t feel sorry for either Jian (now an established radio host with CBC and an ex-musician himself who should be able to hold his own against entertainment-types like Billy Bob Thorton) or BBT who wants to crossover into the music biz from the movie biz. I feel sorry for the Boxmaster guys who are doing their thing touring and trying to get to the next level in their music careers …and I suppose if/once they do, they’ll spit out BBT when they won’t need him anymore…that’s show biz….

Keith in Rockford, Illinois | 4/9/2009, 3:17 pm EST

Mission Accomplished–Billy Bob. Way to drum up publicity. Vintage “punk job” on that interviewer. Seriously though—I’d say BBT owes a loy of people an apology for his behavior–his bandmates, the audience, the interviewer and some of those he insulted with his jibberish in the interview. Stay classy San Diego.

Elvis knows best... | 4/9/2009, 3:23 pm EST

Billy Bob is a fucking tool. Wait until I get my hands on him in the after life. No all dead rock show for BBT! No uh uh!

BillyKnob | 4/9/2009, 3:24 pm EST

If Billy Bob wants people to throw things at his performances, than insulting all of his Canadian fans is a good way to get it.

Declan | 4/9/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Old Billy B is going to have to cutback estrogen/weed cocktails and get back on his meds. Low self esteem manifested in a stoned grade 1 kids temper tantrum is generally filed under the ‘who give a ratz’ file. But what was mercifully pathetic was the callous lack of respect for his band mates who are undoubtably skilled musicians. What a turd. Can’t believe that other emotional mine field Angie let this prize catch slip through her fingers… Let the mouth breather go boys, he’s not that talented he could be easily replaced.

Backstabbingliar | 4/9/2009, 3:30 pm EST

His bandmates were certainly embarrassed by Billy Bob’s performance. I’m surprised that the studio was large enough to accommodate BB’s swelled head.

derrick | 4/9/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Let’s have some fun and see if we can start an international boycott of all BBT products and encourage people to spend the saved money on something worthwhile. Go hear a local band in a local club (perhaps a band that has been together for two years and can’t get an interview with CBC because they have no famous actors in the band). We could call it the “Listen Locally Campaign”.

Anonymous | 4/9/2009, 3:39 pm EST

I use to like this guy….now I can’t even look at him the same way.

Uknown Fan | 4/9/2009, 3:55 pm EST

Awkward interview, but great music. He wants the band to be the focus not him or his acting. Who can blame him if the host and production crew can’t follow simple directions.

Joe | 4/9/2009, 3:57 pm EST

Bizarre behavior but no doubt an attempt to get publicity because BBT and his band probably can’t legitimately sell records any other way.Ghomeshi, way to go, you kept your cool.

michelle in colorado | 4/9/2009, 4:06 pm EST

I don’t think for one second that this was a serious interview. This is a very smart man who doesn’t care about what people think. He was messing with the interviewer and he’s messing with all of us. I even caught a stifled smile from one of the band members. I think he got exactly what he was looking for!

Sanford | 4/9/2009, 4:10 pm EST

“Cosmic Country Music” my ass! His music is no more cosmic than Bruce Willis’ or Don Johnson’s music was (two other actors who play-acted as musicians). Pack it in, Bad Santa!

Jen in Edmonton | 4/9/2009, 4:32 pm EST

What a complete butthead. jerk.

Shawn | 4/9/2009, 4:35 pm EST

We had a saying in radio for arrogant on-air talent. You can be an asshole with ratings. But without ratings, you’re just an asshole. In this case, you can be an asshole with album sales, but without album sales you’re just an asshole. Nuff said…. A note about Jian Ghomeshi: he is a musician, radio and TV host, as well as a music manager…and has emerged as one of Canada’s finest. Americans should check him out on Sirius.

CrazyXMarine | 4/9/2009, 4:36 pm EST

I’ve never liked BBT’s acting, ever; like Tom Cruise he mucks up any film he’s in. But his halfwitted reference to Tom Petty is the last straw: Tom Petty is an icon, a musical legend, Billy Bob is a no-talent, 3 chords & a goober egomaniacal fucktard.

Dave | 4/9/2009, 4:47 pm EST

C’mon y’all…he’s obviously still suffering from withdrawal for no longer being able to drink Angelina’s blood.

darrel | 4/9/2009, 4:52 pm EST

that was the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard. I like Billy’s movies, Jian is an very talented interviewer. To hear Blly do that on Jians show was something I would never expect but I’m kinda glad it happened. Sure it wasn’t exactly pretty. Actually it was about as comfortable as watching someone boil kittens. but it was horrific in a harmless sort of way. Jian came out looking professional, talk about grace under preassure. Billy is still rich. And we all have an amazing thing to talk about. It could be worse.

Chuck Currie | 4/9/2009, 5:07 pm EST

It’s about time that a guest put Jian Ghomeshi in his place. Ghomeshi is an embarrassment to Canada, a relentless low-brow inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity. He can’t even read the opening billboards properly. He finds himself much more fascinating than his guests. Guests only exist for him to insert jejune commentary and interrupt with his “much more knowledgeable” and self-important opinions. I find myself wanting to smack him, and I wish Billy Bob had.

To have the irreplaceable Eleanor Wachtel, one of the greatest interviewers in the history of radio, whose toe-nail clippings are more intelligent and wittier than Ghomeshi in his wildest egotistical dreams, lose her time slot to this pseudo-intellectual is a national disgrace.

J from Toronto | 4/9/2009, 5:35 pm EST

Couldn’t disagree with Chuck Currie more (except he is right that Eleanor Wachtel is amazing). Jian Ghomeshi is currently one of Canada’s best interviewers with his extensive, and not intrusive, knowledge of music, literature, culture, history … you name it. Billy Bob embarrassed himself (Tom Petty – please!) looking like a narcissistic, over indulged, dare I say it “actor”.

MJJD | 4/9/2009, 5:37 pm EST

Hey Chuck Currie,

It sounds like Jian isn’t the only one, “inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity.”

I think you’ve let you’re bitterness over Eleanor Wachtel losing her time slot totally destroy any objectivity you may have.

Bottom line was BBT acted like an asshole and Jian Ghomeshi should be complmeted for his professionalism, grace and restraint.

Bobby | 4/9/2009, 5:37 pm EST

He’s the lead singer, not the drummer. That was him being arrogant.

GC | 4/9/2009, 5:59 pm EST

We know Tom Petty, and you sir are NO Tom Petty!

Miko | 4/9/2009, 6:05 pm EST

The interview was supposed to be about the music, but in the end it was all about BBT, with his bandmates navel-gazing in the background. To top it all off, Q has never had so much publicity and JG so much admiration.

It was a win-win situation if you ask me.

Denise from BC | 4/9/2009, 6:06 pm EST

I agree whole heartedly with Chuck’s description of Jian outside of the interview with BBT. After decades of loyal CBC listening I have switched to BBC or NPR when Jian takes to the air. I can’t bear to hear him interject himself into every discussion no matter what the subject, no matter what the context. On the other hand, BBT so out-performed Jian at his own game that I actually felt a tug of empathy for Jian – really admired his tenacity in politely grinding on – but, then I thought, “Naa! Apparently Jian needs this experience – let him suck it up.”

dan | 4/9/2009, 6:12 pm EST

billy go home and stay there.

dan | 4/9/2009, 6:15 pm EST

billy bob get out of canada we don t want you here?

Rosie | 4/9/2009, 6:21 pm EST

Billy-buffoon needs a ladder to hoist himself out of his angry narcissistic navel. Jian was trying to talk music; BB redirected the discussion to his acting. It was selfish for him to sabotage that opportunity for his band mates; you know, the actual musicians that played their instruments.

Chuck Currie | 4/9/2009, 6:35 pm EST

My “inebriated verbosity” was an excerpt in tribute to Disraeli’s famous statement regarding Gladstone, much of which could be used to characterize Ghomeshi: “A sophistical rhetorician, inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity, and gifted with an egotistical imagination that can at all times command an interminable and inconsistent series of arguments to malign an opponent and to glorify himself.”

My initial distaste for Ghomeshi did indeed come from the first week in which he was given the old Arts Tonight slot previously occupied by Ms Wachtel. He did a banal and unimaginative interview with an author, and I was appalled. Since then, he has not failed to disappoint. Normally, I tune out the moment I hear his voice, but I did want to hear an interview with the band Anvil a few weeks ago. He interrupted and flatly contradicted one of the band members a few minutes into the interview, on a subjective matter…the gentlemen did not even get a chance to finish one sentence. This is not uncommon behaviour for him, and even when not being rude, his interviews lack depth and style. I resent every penny of my tax dollars that trickle into his salary.

Forsyth | 4/9/2009, 7:18 pm EST

I will never listen to this album, ever. I feel sorry for the other dudes in the band.

Matty in Cincinnati | 4/9/2009, 7:19 pm EST

This was obviously drug- induced behavior. The comments regarding Billy Bob’s arrogance or tenacity – really, folks? I mean, I’ve seen this guys hundreds of times, and I know this is not typical.
To not know when your band started, and to suggest you do not know Willie Nelson, the man headlining the tour, is simply outrageous.
This man needs to sober up, and act appropriate next time.

ohbillybob | 4/9/2009, 7:42 pm EST

He grew up a music historian, eh? I thought he only liked baseball. What a mess. Either this is a cynical (though wildly successful) attempt to grab publicity or the tail end of a night of serious drug abuse. Isn’t he too old for this stuff? I heard his music is crap anyway…I hope the unlucky fans who end up at his show boo him offstage.

james f | 4/9/2009, 8:45 pm EST

What band is he in? Fucking douchebag

Leo | 4/9/2009, 8:46 pm EST

Great interview. Drug haze aside that is. As for Chuck Currie’s whining about Jian’s interviewing talent, it’s about time a younger generation get a voice on what was a tired old CBC. Hip, fresh, modern shows have given the CBC some much needed audience numbers.

gravytrain | 4/9/2009, 9:04 pm EST

Jade | 4/9/2009, 9:45 pm EST

Credit where it is due: Jian Ghomeshi did a brilliant job in that interview. Those dissing him in the above comments should try interviewing people for a living. It ain’t easy.

Chris in Canada | 4/9/2009, 9:57 pm EST

Billy Bob, Get some help buddy!! I felt sorry for his bandmates, I’m thinking they feel sorry for him as well. What was said is true, It’s a “Hobby” as his acting career was his primary objective at one time. Now that he’s back on the bad stuff, it’s since changed apparently.

O'Zebedee | 4/9/2009, 10:22 pm EST

It was great fun until Billy-Bob got all pouty.

He should’ve stuck with the Tom Waits non-sequitor style of answering – the Forrest J Ackerman stuff was gold!

Anonymous | 4/9/2009, 10:57 pm EST

Tom Petty????? The only thing “Petty” about Billy-Boob is his childish behaviour.

wi usa | 4/9/2009, 11:09 pm EST

bbt great actor. he was acting in this interview. actors are above us like drs, they don’t have to put up with disrepect.

I guess the hard drugs did take their toll. Either that or them french fried potaters. LOL.

Ty | 4/10/2009, 12:12 am EST

Self absorbed, narcissistic, arrogant tool whose marginal grasp of reality fails to register that the only reason he and the band are being interviewed is because of his acting success. Being interested in music history does not make you a musician, and being in a warm up band doesn’t legitimize a comparison to Tom Petty. Interesting though – now he is more famous for being a knob than an actor or a “musician”!

Jason in San Diego | 4/10/2009, 12:34 am EST

What a moron, I hope you folks boo him till he leaves Canada, I feel sorry for his bandmates.
They looked very uncomfortable, they have to suffer because of this prima donna.

Annie Reuter | 4/10/2009, 1:10 am EST

Wow. Have to agree that Ghomeshi composed himself well in the interview. It’s always interesting to see how the interviewer handles incredibly awkward situations like this. Apparently Billy Bob Thornton was playing at SXSW, hopefully his live performance was better than this interview. Thanks for posting the interview!

Matt in Canada | 4/10/2009, 2:26 am EST

alisdair | 4/10/2009, 5:24 am EST

While I would agree that Elanor Wachtel is the superior interviewer, I will say Gian (spelling) is probably more accessible. Youger listeners probably would like his more casual approach. I find him a reasonably good interviewer. I would imagine he is probably (good or bad) bringing in a wider and younger audience to the CBC.

Katie | 4/10/2009, 7:09 am EST

Bad publicity is still publicity for his band. Bottom line his effort failed, I can’t remember the name of the band but I now know who Jian Ghomeshi is – great interviewer!!!

I wouldnt listen to him after that – didnt have his drums.. more like WHAT AN ASSHOLE

Conrad in Van | 4/10/2009, 10:29 am EST

Billy Bob Thornton compared himself to Tom Petty 3 times in the interview. When Tom Petty was asked what he thought about Billy Bob Thornton comparing himself to him. Petty replied, “don’t do me like that”.

boo | 4/10/2009, 10:44 am EST

What everyone is missing here is that if it were not for all the “little people” Billy Bob wouldn’t have a career of any kind.
Treating anyone with disrespect is not the way to get or stay anywhere.

BBT reminds me of Mr Fawlty in Fawlty Towers…where Polly tells Fawlty “not to mention THE WAR”..to a bunch of German guests…and can’t help but mention it all the time. If you don’t want attention drawn to the “acting” bit… then don’t be a pinhead [therby drawing attention to it]

As in immigrated American here in Canada, all I can say is: what an embarrassment BBT is to both Americans and to every artistic community on the planet. Egotistical, narcissistic, and shallow. I will never purchase a Boxmasters CD, go to any of their concerts, or see any movie written, directed or acted in by BBT. Way to ruin your career, fuckwad !

J. McVicar in Canada | 4/10/2009, 10:56 pm EST

Jian Ghomeshi is great. Billy Bob has had great moments in film and is attempting to achieve some great moments in music. Well, welcome to Canada, where we traditionally try to cut past the bullshit and get to the art of it all… stick to the screen BBT, where you can edit til your hearts content!!

Erik in Toronto | 4/10/2009, 11:52 pm EST

I would urge folks to read the Wikipedia page on BBT. Self described obsessive compulsive with a fear of (I kid you not!) flatware (cutlery) and antique furniture. Combine all of that with 5 marriages and you have one strange dude. And by the way Jian, when the rattlesnake is shakin’ that thang, it’s best to stop poking it with a stick.

If you are reading this, please interview Tom Petty, and address ONLY his Acting Career, just to see how he wishes to compare himself Thespian-wise with BBT.

THAT would be an excellent complement to the A$$HATTERY displayed by Sir William Robert Thornton

LoReaNNa | 4/11/2009, 2:06 pm EST

WoW! What a psycho interview he gave. He needs Psych 101 then he can go on to Medical Evaluation Tools 904 where he can evaluate himself for a fix-it course. Perhaps Popular Mechanics magazine can show him how to put his childhood kits together {agains]?! And to think of all the people in both our countries that die for idiots like him to be so distastful in public. I like USA Ppl, but every now and then there is this stuff the planet gets. He needs a butler from Buckingham Palace to improve his manners! I am so sorry for the Obama family, but I am sure they realize the worlkd needs a good laugh now and then too.

Scott | 4/11/2009, 3:26 pm EST

In 14 minutes, Billy Boob alienated an entire country. Instead of manning up and apologizing, he fled the country. I feel for his bandmates having to sit through that and then perform later. I well imagine they are sick, sick of Silly Bob.

being humiliated by their meal ticket.

Daniel from Toronto | 4/11/2009, 8:02 pm EST

Maybe Billy Bob took issue with Jian Ghomeshi because he (Jian) was a better musician that he was and obviously handles himself more professionally than “Bad Billy Bob Santa” does.

Yes, Jian used to be a drummer with a Canadian folk rock group called Moxy Früvous.

I mean honestly, had anyone ever heard of this group? I didn’t until now and it was only because BBT acted (which he isn’t very good at either) like a complete assclown. The guy was doing him a favor by trying to incorporate something that the listeners could attach to the music.

If BBT wants people to throw stuff during his concerts then he certainly might get his wish.

Kate | 4/11/2009, 8:49 pm EST

Unbelievable, totally. How could he be such an idiot??? Those guys playing with him looked so embarassed, he owes them an apology. I feel like every BBT movie I see from now on, I will only see his enormous ego instead of the character he’s portraying. What a goober.

theatticfan | 4/13/2009, 4:27 pm EST

wow, i think jians interview has now introduced Canadians to bbt and the band. i was thinking he had been had. Really it turns out, this interview has them both winning. All sorts of us know of both these guys now.Trouble is as usual they will be saying remember the interview in canada with bbt. i think people as usual will forget the interviewer and remember the interview. Regardless i now have listened to bbt and the band. I quite like the lyrics and music. Thanks Jian, I would not know this music with out ya. Good Days, Bad Days, we have all had our share. Good Music is what tis all about. I hope for a bright future for you both. Hey maybe they planned this together as bbt was tired and wanted a few nights off and then all the credit goes to our wonderful cbc host.Onward!

Sue Lynn | 4/16/2009, 2:57 am EST

I’m with Chuck Currie when it comes to Gian. He seems to enjoy tripping up his guests and tries to put himself above them. He also likes to patronize women.
That being said I thought he managed Billy Bob quite well. Gian didn’t cover up for him.
I do hope that this type of interview won’t be a common occurance. I prefer interviews with interesting, intelligent, and polite artists. Sensationalistic exposure of messed up people isn’t my cup of tea. Personal tragedy is not news and should not be entertainment.

Q Ball | 4/18/2009, 11:11 am EST

I’ll admit that Ghomeshi handled the situation as well as he could once it turned ugly, but it has to be said that Jian Ghomeshi is about the most self-absorbed person you could ever hope to meet.

jed bundy | 4/22/2009, 1:53 am EST

If Billy Bob is such a music historian, he would know about The Blue Shadows, a 90’s band fronted by another crazy American, Billy Cowsill.

Cowsill loved British music but he was also a huge country fan. It was his dream to create a fusion of those sounds.

The Blue Shadows’ albums “On the Floor of Heaven” and “Lucky to Me” prove Cowsill’s dream was realized years before BBT’s claim of “…not in the past 30 years”.

Take your own history lesson and search YouTube for evidence of this great Canadian Band.

RIP Billy Cowsill

I’m kind of disappointed you didn’t call out the gravy comment in the wrap up piece. Seems to me this has-been’s trashing of a whole nation as bland is as much of a deal as the rest of it.

And, Thornton, really? Bland jokes? You people have been calling us that for years. As such an *inspired* wordsmith, surely you could have come up with something better than your hackneyed gravy joke.
