Kal Penn Quits “House” for the White House: Will “Harold and Kumar” Suffer?

In a stunning bit of news, actor Kal Penn has accepted a full-time job at the White House where he will serve as a liaison between the government and arts groups. To pave way for the career transition his character on House committed suicide last night. This is good news for Penn and probably our country, but terrible news for fans of stoner comedy. What does this mean for Harold and Kumar 3? It supposedly had gotten the green light. What if Star Wars stopped after Empire Strikes Back because Mark Hamill went to work for Ronald Reagan?

I supported Obama in every way possible, but I never imagined it would be at the cost of Harold and Kumar 3. If he ran on a platform of “Vote for me and I’ll crush any future sequels to Harold and Kumar” I would have voted for John McCain or a third term for George W. Bush, or the mummified remains of James Buchanan. This cannot stand. President Obama, for the sake of your country, grant Kal Penn a furlough to film the next Harold and Kumar movie.

[Editors' note: once a TV show airs, spoiler alerts are a moot point.]

Spoiler much? I DVR House. :(

That said, it sounds like a really exciting opportunity for him.

Anonymous | 4/7/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Oh no, I think I have crabs.

StrummerJones | 4/7/2009, 4:22 pm EST

Laughing my ass off at the person who got this spoiled. That sucks, dude.

And who thinks that Kal Penn is suddenly even more badass?

Anonymous | 4/7/2009, 4:27 pm EST

Yeah, thanks for the spoiler warning….:(

Gaucho14 | 4/7/2009, 4:27 pm EST

Oh well, there will be other mindless stoner comedies to take its place. H&K 2 was poor follow-up to the first installment anyway.

Jenna | 4/7/2009, 4:27 pm EST

I am sick of seeing all the lazy House fans who haven’t watched the ep. yet online comlaing about “Spoilers.” Don’t come online to sites like this, if you don’t want to take the chance. Your fault.

That said, this was one of my first thoughts too…”What about Harold & Kumar 3?!”

Arthur Vandelay | 4/7/2009, 4:54 pm EST

“What if Star Wars stopped after Empire Strikes Back…”

Are you arguing for or against another Harold and Kumar sequel?

John | 4/7/2009, 5:08 pm EST

Kal was good on House, sorry to see him go. Comments on H&K2 right on the money, it was a weak and lame movie compared to H&K1.

Strax | 4/7/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Thanks for spoiling it Andy. Good job. See if I click a link to news on this site anymore.

Patch | 4/7/2009, 5:47 pm EST

I have serious issues with someone who was in a movie like Harold and Kumar working for our government…

This has to be a joke right?

From White Castle to White House??

Thomas | 4/7/2009, 5:50 pm EST

I have seen harlold and kumar, I have also seen Star Wars, they hardly compare. You must be brain-washed to imagine they ever could.

Mitch | 4/7/2009, 5:58 pm EST

How can anybody turn around and say spoiler, when you don’t want to know the outcome of something don’t tune in to anything.
This includes Radio, TV, Paper, Mags, etc. and if you do you deserve the SPOILS.

Carey | 4/7/2009, 6:32 pm EST

Thomas honey, the writer was not comparing the two movies, the writer was simply giving you a “what if” scenario. Why not go back and re-read the article, remove your head from your bum first so you can fully understand it, eh?

Lee | 4/7/2009, 6:55 pm EST

Some people need to look up sarcasm in the dictionary.

Lee | 4/7/2009, 6:57 pm EST

Irony? Anyone? Anyone?

Drew | 4/7/2009, 8:26 pm EST

Spoiled for me as well, but I don’t watch House for the long-term BS anyway. Seriously though, this is a MUSIC site, I’d avoid it if I thought it was a TV plot summary site… at least don’t put in the the RSS feed.

jerome | 4/7/2009, 9:38 pm EST

Its not that big of a spoiler for the episode anyway so yeah but sad to hear that harold and kumar 3 may be in jerparody

Skewirt | 4/7/2009, 10:09 pm EST

I’m a big fan of Kal Penn and love his work and wish him the best in the White House… but honestly I’m really down knowing that Harold & Kumar 3 probably won’t exist. BRING BACK HAROLD AND KUMAR!! THERE HAS TO BE A THIRD!! But good luck to KP and congrats to him.

Dan | 4/7/2009, 10:22 pm EST

As soon as Anoop gets voted off American Idol he can take Kal Penn’s place and they can film another straight to DVD H&K movie.

jimmy | 4/8/2009, 12:30 am EST

The Harold and Kumar saga is important to some us… if you dont like it fine man whatever but to insinuate its a worthless storyline then u miss the whole essence of what is Harold and Kumar… I really hope the creator get to finish telling their story I know they wanted to do at least one more movie. I will be sad if it never gets to happen. I was really curious as to where they wanted to two stoners to end up at.

Michael McEuin | 4/8/2009, 2:05 am EST

Why would Kal Penn want to quit a successful TV show to go to work for an idiot committed to destroying the constitution?

Very disappointing….

Anonymous | 4/8/2009, 2:31 am EST

Now that his acting career is coming to an end may be he can go back to his original name too, since he had renamed himself for more hollywood attention

YellowPrickRoad | 4/8/2009, 3:03 am EST

“What if Star Wars stopped after Empire Strikes Back because Mark Hamill went to work for Ronald Reagan?”

Apparently Mark Hamill did work as part of George McGovern’s team. It didn’t work out.

Cloudman | 4/8/2009, 12:21 pm EST

The 2nd H&K movie had a pretty satisfying ending so I can’t say I’m too broken up about not getting any more.

obamanation | 4/8/2009, 1:29 pm EST

f the o. hes ruining the country and now a harold and kumar 3

ccb | 4/9/2009, 9:19 pm EST

was cheech or chong unavailable for the white house job

Jared | 4/15/2009, 4:41 pm EST

H&K was a great movie and so was the second one. neither of them went straight to dvd, they were both quite successful and i think obama is making a great decision.
