Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr Reunite Onstage at New York Benefit

Just after 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 4th, Paul McCartney finally uttered the phrase that the 6,000 people in New York’s Radio City Music Hall had been desperate to hear for more than three hours. “At this point,” McCartney said, “we’d would like to introduce to you — someone you know, ladies and gentlemen, Billy Shears!” When Ringo Starr bounded onstage — to sing “With a Little Help From My Friends” with McCartney and his band — the crowd finally witnessed the closest thing to a Beatles reunion in 2009.

(Check out photos of Paul and Ringo onstage together and more shots from the benefit.)

The much-anticipated coming together of McCartney and Starr was part of “Change Begins Within,” a benefit for the David Lynch Foundation’s drive to bring meditation to troubled public schools. With his modern-Eraserhead hairdo and helium voice, the idiosyncratic director was the evening’s master of ceremonies. As Yoko Ono, Bill O’Reilly, John McEnroe, Jennifer Aniston, Martin Scorsese and other famous types watched from the audience, celebrities you’d expect (Mike Love of the Beach Boys) and wouldn’t (Jerry Seinfeld, Howard Stern) gave testimonials to the power of meditating.

To make the point that remaining still for 10 to 15 minutes twice a day shouldn’t only be associated with the ’60s and flowing robes, the nearly four-hour show included performances by acts born around the time the Beatles made their famous visit to India in 1968. Playing solo, Eddie Vedder sang a lovely “Rise” from the Into the Wild soundtrack. Moby, joined by rediscovered soul legend Bettye LaVette, recreated “Natural Blues” from Play. Ben Harper and the Relentless7 pulled off a simmer-to-boil “Up to You Now,” from their new White Lies for Dark Times album. Vedder and Harper teamed up for the evening’s most unlikely cover, a note-for-note remake of the Bowie-Queen collaboration “Under Pressure” clearly chosen for its stress-related lyric.

Yet nostalgia for another era of pop, when rock & roll and spiritual enlightenment were a seemingly natural fit, permeated the concert. Backed by Harper and his band (and with Jim James of My Morning Jacket singing along), Donovan — still fond of Nehru shirts and beads — happily resurrected “Season of the Witch,” “Wear Your Love Like Heaven” and “Hurdy Gundy Man.” Sheryl Crow covered George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” with Harper sitting in to recreate Harrison’s slide guitar licks.

Still, it was co-headliners McCartney and Starr who everyone truly yearned to see. Ring’s own mini-set — “It Don’t Came Easy,” “Boys” and “Yellow Submarine,” in which he too was backed by Harper and the Relentless7 — came first. Then McCartney and his touring band knocked out nearly an hours’ worth of solo hits (”Band on the Run,” “Jet”) and Beatles classics (”Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Drive My Car,” “Got to Get You Into My Life,” “Let It Be,” “Lady Madonna”).

Although it would’ve been nice to see Starr bash along with the latter songs, all seemed to be forgiven with his and McCartney’s sweetly laconic “With a Little Help from My Friends.” Afterwards, Starr finally took a seat behind an extra drum kit to thump along on “Cosmically Conscious,” a chant-like ditty McCartney wrote during the Beatles’ Indian pilgrimage. (A portion of it was included on McCartney’s ‘93 solo album Off the Ground.) Vedder, Crow and nearly everyone else sang along, then stayed for the encore, “I Saw Her Standing There.” As McCartney aimed to hit the song’s famous whooping “whoooo!” and Starr bashed away while bobbing his head, the legend of the Fab Four finally took the stage.

Closest thing to Beatle’s reunion? What about the concert for George when McCartney, Starr, and Clapton all shared the stage and played George’s music?

Outie | 4/6/2009, 8:48 am EST

I met Mr. Lynch,in 1980 at a TM
Pooja in Rhode Island.
I wish they would have done
U.S.S.R. with Paul,Ringo and
the Lovester,all trading vocals.
PBS recorded the event.
They did it for the kids….

Jeff Gorham,

Didn’t McCartney and Starr perform separately at the ‘Concert For George’? I don’t think they actually played together at any point during that show.

Anonymous | 4/6/2009, 9:17 am EST

i take it back… looks like they DID perform 1 song at that show.

Anonymous | 4/6/2009, 9:21 am EST

But that Concert For George version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, didn’t feature either Paul or Ringo on lead vocals, and had a stage cluttered full of other guests.

At least Paul and Ringo doing ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’, was more of a ‘true’ almost-Beatles reunion.

Ray | 4/6/2009, 10:36 am EST

Anonymous, the Concert For George featured a lot of songs sung by McCartney…For example, McCartney’s version “Something” stood out, and Ringo resurrected “Honey Don’t”

Ray | 4/6/2009, 10:38 am EST

Ringo DID play the drums behind Paul at the Concert For George

MB | 4/6/2009, 11:48 am EST

Concert for George was an amazing show in case you havent seen it. I certainly recommend buying it or donwloading it.

Playing together | 4/6/2009, 12:08 pm EST

If you’re looking for solo Beatles playing together, look at George and Ringo. They got together during a concert/tribute for Carl Perkins. The concert was released as a DVD. George and Ringo also played the Prince’s Trust together, all of which can be seen on YouTube.

RJ Araneta | 4/6/2009, 12:12 pm EST

The entire time McCartney was on stage at THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE, Starr was above playing the drums, along with the other drummers.

re: playing together | 4/6/2009, 12:39 pm EST

The Carl Perkins show with Ringo and George playing is excellent! I’m glad you’ve mentioned it. I watched the DVD a few months ago (it originally aired on cable in the mid-1980’s) and really enjoyed it. In addition to George and Ringo, Eric Clapton and “Slim” Jim Phantom from the Stray Cats play with Perkins. My favorite moment is where these music greats are literally sitting at Perkins’ feet, while he tells stories about the early days of rock n’ roll. If you haven’t seen this yet, definitely worth a watch!

Tim | 4/6/2009, 12:49 pm EST

This is beautiful.. I would love to see a tour or a venue like a stadium that would accomodate this show.. Why have it at a 6,000 seater for a benefit when if your intention was to really raise money, it could have been at Giants Stadium… reguardless, lets see a tour. eh?

RJ Araneta | 4/6/2009, 12:55 pm EST

The former members of The Beatles have played together in various of combinations of two’s and three’s since their break up.

Forgot to add George and Ringo jamming at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after The Beatles’ induction ceremony.

I’m astonished that so many people know exactly what John would say if he were alive, especially as he was known to change his mind from time to time. If both Paul and Ringo were willing to donate their time, and appear to actually practice TM, perhaps John would have let them get away with it? Just surmising.

Smitty | 4/6/2009, 3:48 pm EST

The Concert for Bangla Desh has to be mentioned. It was spectacular, with Harrison the main guy up front for a change and Ringo on the kit. — although Ritchie did do his hit of the time, “It Don’t Come Easy.”
This was reissued in 2005 with a new retrospective and has aired on PBS. I highly recommend it.

klaatu | 4/6/2009, 4:37 pm EST

johnminett, if you had any idea at at all of what you are talking about.. you sure would not make such a moronic statement.

Benny | 4/6/2009, 8:51 pm EST

George is my favorite beatle. Ringo is next though followed by Paul. Not a Lennon worshipper his death was tragic but doesn’t make his music more appealing to me

CR1ZZ | 4/6/2009, 9:07 pm EST

Not Beatles. Very nice concert, but not Beatles.

CR1ZZ | 4/6/2009, 9:11 pm EST

Johnminett what the fuck? Do you know John Lennon personally do you?

Dan Cogan | 4/6/2009, 9:13 pm EST

I was at the RCMH show in the sixth row. To see Paul and Ringo perform “A little Help From My Friends” Both singing and harmonizing into one single microphone!!! It was the best concert moment EVER!!!

RJ Araneta | 4/6/2009, 9:38 pm EST

This is a concert featuring Paul and Ringo. Not The Beatles getting together. Without John and George, its not The Beatles!

I dislike sensationalism perpetrated by media. An example of this is the description, sub-title of this article on this sites homepage, “Beatles come together”.

If they sensationalize things like this, imagine whatever else is going on that they put a spin on.

Obviously, the media has no respect for its readers or watchers intelligence.

I don’t care what they sang together, or how they played it, I just love to see them TOGETHER!!

amazing, a beautiful event like this and we are arguing over whether or not this was a Beatles reunion or not? folks, appreciate the beauty and majesty of this incredible moment, I wish I could have been there, who knows if or when these two men who have given us so much over the years will “come together” (bad pun intended) again?

They were so great it brought tears to my eyes.I know every word to their songs. Cannot still believe how great paul and ringo sound. Was really disappointed at the party afterwards. I was told paul would show. I was so close to having one of my dreams come true, meeting him in person. I waited till the end. Maybe next time

dinnyc | 4/7/2009, 9:38 pm EST

To some degree, I agree with johnminett. John would have enjoyed doing it for children, but not in memory of TM or the Maharishi. But, on the other hand, it was wonderful to see Paul & Ringo on stage together. I do think they should have done songs from The White Album, since it was inspired by TM.

JohnMinnet appears to have confused instant karma with groundhog day…McCartney has absolutely no contemporaries!! He sounds brilliant still, while any of his closest peers have more or less faded away, he just keeps on doing what he loves. I think that’s his secret – he really does radiate love and joy from within.

David Lynch Fdtn. & schools | 4/8/2009, 11:06 am EST

Please share this info. about T.M. ‘missionaries’ operating within San Francisco public school classrooms:

During this school year (2008-2009), the Transcendental Meditation program (with the front-name/slogan “Quiet Time”) has also been implemented at another inner-city public school in San Francisco — Everett Middle School. There are two required daily T.M. sessions of 15 minutes each in every classroom throughout the school toward the beginning & the end of the school day, and the students are graded for their robotic participation using a point system. The marketing emphasis is on ’stress relief’ and bringing up standardized test scores (please note: At Visitacion Valley Middle School in San Francisco, which began implementing the David Lynch Foundation T.M. program in February 2007, the school’s recent California state ‘API’ ranking based on standardized test scores from the next year — Spring, 2008, actually went down several points!).

Consequently, due to the required T.M. taking a total 1/2 hour of classroom time every school day, Everett Middle School’s schedule doesn’t provide a homeroom-advisory session for students. The school building has been hijacked by a crew of 20 bullying, clueless T.M. fanatics working for the David Lynch Foundation who are not school district staff (they are funded by a large grant of more than $200,000.). They have commandeered a large classroom for use as their T.M. office, and also a wing of the building which contains several small rooms. These T.M. ‘missionaries’ at times disrespectfully (or sometimes perhaps obliviously) interfere with school instruction & logistics. They also deceptively lie & obfuscate to the staff, students & parents about the induction process (’Puja’ religious chanting & worship ceremony), the source & selection of the mantras, and the organization’s checkered history & fascist framework. Of course, they never
mention their World Plan scenarios, Fairfield, Iowa & Global shenanigans, crowned-Rajas & pretend-Government, etc. or the observed fact that T.M. mega-huckster (frequently-divorced) David Lynch is a chain-smoking cigarette addict. Recently, the T.M. conglomerate has been targeting students from low-income neighborhoods and schools without an active PTA or strong parent involvement to provide oversight. The T.M. proselytizers have shown themselves to be anti-democracy, anti-educational inquiry, and anti- the U.S. Constitution (the separation of Church & State).

In perspective: I’m sensibly & reasonably in favor of meditation, visualization and stress-reduction strategies/techniques within schools as part of a non-sectarian health ed. (wellness) program — devised & guided or overseen by health care & education professionals. These skills can be taught within a knowledge-seeking educational environment which is open to students asking questions and encourages honest discussion — which fosters resilient focus & mindFULness (rather than mindLESSness or fascist no-questions-asked rote obedience).

Parents & educators should be holistically promoting Healthy Habits, in general — including exercise, nutrition, positive role models, study & reading time, creative arts & music, productive recreation & hobbies — and avoiding toxic influences (such as excessive exposure to violent entertainment).

Steve Cox | 4/8/2009, 3:47 pm EST

re The ‘missionaries’ of TM in San Francisco;
Sounds like many a Bible-study club in public schools, or regular classes in religious schools.
The difference is really, Hinduism mystical practice or Christian belief structures.
IF the TM religous extensions are downplayed, and participation is not forced on students, then it’s just another part of a globally-aware curriculum at work, and nervous Americans should trust their students not to be brainwashed.
If it’s a ‘required subject’, and there is no choice provided, then there is a problem.
TM should be taught for free; knowledge of this basic human ability shouldn’t be a secret to create an organization.
Oh, yeah, PAUL AND RINGO….the Beatles story is not over yet!!

Lauri | 4/8/2009, 8:19 pm EST

The Radio City concert was a dream. Loved seeing Paul & Ringo and all the other musicians–they were all wonderful. Donavan should dust himself off and come out more! (I got booted out of the aisle for dancing when Ringo sang Yellow Submarine.)

Being a TM meditator of 29 years I can say that it changed my life in noticeably positive ways; it’s definitely not a religion and can be practiced by people of any faith or no faith.

The fact that Paul McCartney, Jerry Seinfeld, Howard Stern, David Lynch and many others practice and endorse TM shows that anyone can do it from the full spectrum of humanity; and it must be having a positive effect in their lives or they wouldn’t have made such glowing endorsements.

There are tons of scientific studies proving the physiological and psychological benefits of TM. The fact that TM comes from an eastern tradition is fine; it’s gotta come from somewhere. India had thousands of years to perfect the technique of meditation. Be thankful they’re sharing it–it’s a gift!

TM must be better than homeroom. If kids don’t want to mediate they can sit quietly for fifteen minutes–how could that be bad?

Can’t help wondering what other music the Beatles would have created if they’d stayed together… the whole was greater than the sum of the parts.

The post about “TM missionaries in San Francisco public school classrooms” is filled with misinformation. The most important point of misinformation is that the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program is required of students in schools where it has been introduced. To the contrary, it is a completely voluntary program. Students only learn after they sign up to learn and after written permission is received from parents. Schools funded by the David Lynch Foundation do institute two required daily Quiet Time periods for all students, but TM is just one of several options for students during these periods.

The David Lynch Foundation is supporting the TM/Quiet Time program in schools for one and only one reason: It is beneficial for students and schools. Schools start the program and continue with it year after year because they appreciate its value. In the San Francisco schools where it has been implemented, there have been numerous positive results, including:
• Significant improvement in standardized test scores for students testing below proficient level
• Significant increase in overall school GPA and in the GPA of subgroups such as African Americans that have been particularly impervious to change over time
• Sharp decreases in fights and reductions in suspensions within the first semester of implementation of the program
• Significant decrease in anxiety and improvement in self-esteem as measured by psychological tests
• Significant reduction in stress in faculty, as measured by psychological tests
• Sharp reductions in illness-related absences for faculty after introduction of the program
• Students report positive results, such as improved ability to focus, better sleep at night, less anger, better self-esteem, and greater ability to complete work

For anyone who is “sensibly & reasonably in favor of meditation,” as the writer claims to be, Transcendental Meditation makes tremendous sense. It is non-religious (no belief is involved), is very easy to do, is extensively researched and shown to have broad-ranging positive effects, is highly standardized, and taught only by well-trained professionals. This program is making a very positive impact on children and schools. Thank you David Lynch and Paul, Ringo and friends for coming together to support this worthy program.

YellowPrickRoad | 4/9/2009, 3:07 am EST

Bill O’ Reilly was there? I hope nobody mentioned the term “and now to play us out…”

laughing crow | 4/9/2009, 7:42 am EST

does anybody still believe the anti-meditation misinformation being spewed out by fanatics, about TM being a religion? such hysterics and witch-hunt mentality are so archaic. TM is clearly not a religion because
1. there’s no worship involved
2. it’s not faith-based
3. there’s no dogma, just practice
4. it’s a technique, not a belief system
5. it’s about ‘transcending’ and direct experience, not contemplation or conceptualizing

it’s also totally false that TM is a money-making business: it’s strictly non-profit, and no one has ever made any money off of it, from the bottom to the top. here are 2 sites that actually examine the facts, for those who care about critical thinking: http://www.truthabouttm.org
http://www.Skept icsOnTM.org

people who think John would not have supported this, did you know him better than Paul and Ringo did? they both said he would have been there supporting the TM cause. even Yoko was there. so was Olivia Harrison and Barbara Bach, Ringo’s wife. Dhani Harrison wanted to come but had already booked a gig elsewhere.

Lennon later referred to his tirade against Maharishi as “an error in judgment.” he phoned Maharishi years after India to apologize for having written “Sexy Sadie” and asked Mahrishi how he could help the TM Movement.

for the facts about what really happened between Maharishi and the Beatles: http://www.beatlesinindia.com

the concert was a totally uplifting cosmic blow out!!!

laughing crow | 4/9/2009, 8:13 am EST

that was: http://www.SkepticsOnTM.org

by the way, this talk about “TM missionaries” in the schools is pure negative propaganda and a distortion of truth from the very small but vocal anti-TM crowd. i know many of the TM teachers working on the school project mentioned, and the school officials themselves came to THEM and requested the program. there are no “TM missionaries” and never have been. the phenomenal growth of TM has always been based on attraction, not proselytizing–that is, people are attracted to TM because they personally see the benefits in others or survey the scientific research and realize TM must really work.

nor is TM a form of ‘HINDUISM.’ contrary to Internet gossip, TM comes from the Vedic tradition, not Hinduism. any credible Indologist or Vedic scholar knows that the Vedic tradition is older than Hinduism by at least a millenium. Hinduism involves worship, faith in deities, moral imperatives, etc, which are in no way associated with TM. the TM mantras came from a time before Hindu deity worship even existed.

another point of misunderstanding: “TM should be taught for free.” Actually, it IS being taught for free to the school kids, thanks to the Lynch Foundation. However, learning TM requires a professional, certified teacher who knows what they’re doing: the technique was lost to society–East and West–for centuries (before Maharishi revived it), and it was lost due to improper teaching methods. teaching TM is time-intensive on the part of the TM teacher; it is these people’s full-time job to teach this meditation, and obviously they have to be supported.

although TM is easy and natural, this procedure of effortless transcending is also a delicate process and cannot be learned form a book, CD, or just from someone else who’s learned it. TM teacher training is rigorous. because the teachers are well trained, it makes it easy for anyone, even kids, to learn the technique. but you need a trained teacher and the non-profit educational organization to provide followup and guidance. the course fee sustains the organization to ensure that everyone can learn it properly, for now and in the future. otherwise the effectiveness would be lost again and no one would benefit. it’s all common sense.

Lauri | 4/9/2009, 9:35 am EST

The Radio City concert was dreamy. Paul and Ringo were wonderful as were all the other musicians. Donavan should dust himself off and come out more! (I got booted out of the isle for dancing while Ringo sang Yellow Submarine.

As a TM meditator of 29 years I can confirm that it has changed my life in significant and positive ways and it is definitely not a religion, can be practiced people of all faiths or no faith. If Paul McCartney, Ringo, Jerry Seinfeld, Howard Stern, David Lynch and many others glowingly endorsed TM at the Radio City concert it means TM must have a positive influence in their lives too.

It’s great that they are offering TM to at-risk youth in schools. TM must be better than homeroom, and if kids don’t want to meditate they can sit quietly for fifteen minutes. What’s bad about that? It is probably a much needed respite from the noise and stress of their day. TM provides deeper rest than contemplation or sitting quietly and it’s easy—anyone can do it.

The fact that TM comes from an eastern tradition is fine—it’s gotta come from somewhere. India has had thousands of years to perfect the technique of meditation! Be glad they are sharing it with us—it’s a gift.

I’d like to be, under Meditation Sea, in an octopus’s garden in the shade. Wise and warm, below the storm, in our octopus’s garden near a cave. He’d let us in, knows where we’ve been, to his octopus’s garden in the shade, … I’d ask my friends to come and see… meditations garden with me. We’d rest our heads, on transcendental beds, in our little hideaway beneath the waves. We would be so happy you and me, no one there to tell us what to do. Oh, what joy, for every girl and boy, knowing they’re happy and they’re safe. I’d like to be, in a meditation sea, in an octopus’s garden with you. Thanks Ringo and Paul!

I was there at Candlestick Park “all those years ago”. Other than the rooftop concert, that’s the last time the four was fab together in concert. Anytime any of them get together to perform is great.

I read that this happened and I cannot believe my eyes.It is surreal. Two Beatles, our beloved Beatles, alive and kickin’ and rockin’ us out in 2009…and still lookin’ like they truly enjoy doing so…The Beatles! In our times!!! They have come along way. Theirs is a story that fascinates me. To think that it started roughly half a century ago. WOW.

Sabbymae | 4/12/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Paul and Ringo haven’t played together since 2005 I believe. I’m very lucky to have seen them. It really was an unforgettable night.

I would love to see Paul & Ringo do a tour with Pete & Roger from The Who. They could do a bunch of Beatles/Who songs together along with whatever else they wanted to perform. And they could call themselves “What cockaroach”

BTW, If this tour EVER transpires I call dibs on the first row/deadcenter in Illinois and the hottest GILF at the show.

bloggabix | 4/14/2009, 4:48 pm EST

Thanks for this great article on the Paul McCartney concert. I was at the concert and it was beyond expectation – simply wonderful. And in support of the great cause to bring Transcendental Meditation to “at-risk” children in schools. I have been doing TM for many years and know first-hand of its great effect in reducing stress. Well done David Lynch, and thanks to all involved.

Don | 9/3/2009, 12:20 pm EST

I personally would love to see a Paul and Ringo reunion tour, and album. It would be great. Sure. we are never going to have a beatles reunion, two of them are dead, but from what I’ve seen when these two play together it is magical. They are way better together than they are apart. Think about it. They could name themselves Two of us after that old Beatles tune from Let it be, and go on a big world tour that would probably end up being the most succesful tour of all time. Any album by the pair would be a huge success and more important than anything think of how great the music would be.
