Chris Cornell on Soundgarden Reunion: “You Never Know”

Chris Cornell has finally said something of substance about the brief reunion of his Soundgarden bandmates in Seattle, telling the Washington Post, “If I was there, I probably would’ve gotten up onstage.” The Superunknown band’s Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron briefly reformed with fellow grunge icon Tad as frontman during the Washington stop of Tom Morello’s Justice Tour, performing “Spoonman” and other songs from the Soundgarden catalog.

“I thought it was cool that they’d actually get together and rehearse some songs. I was kind of surprised by it, to be honest. And I love Tad. We toured with Tad; I’ve always felt he was a really amazing person and a really talented guy,” Cornell told the Post. “So I just really thought it was a cool thing for them to do. They were just getting up there and doing it for fun, and I think that’s great. The only thing I didn’t like is that I wasn’t there to see it.” As for whether Cornell would ever reunite with his old bandmates, Cornell admitted, “You never know.”

Cornell also responded — in non-Twitter fashion — to Trent Reznor’s dissing of Cornell’s maligned Scream album. “That’s kind of childish. To be honest, if I wanted to go out to blast records that I hate, I would be sitting on Twitter 24 hours a day blasting 96 percent of what comes out — maybe 98 percent of what comes out,” Cornell said. “There’s a lot of music that I don’t like.” Still, all the criticism following the Timbaland-produced Scream isn’t getting Cornell down. “A lot of people hated it, even people who were fans of us and had liked what we’d done until then hated it,” Cornell told WP. “They didn’t get it. That was exciting, actually. I like that feeling.”

Cornell may finally be waking up!

Soundgarden were one of the godfathers of the grunge scene and early alternative music and I would love to see a reunion. I have not heard Scream yet, so I can’t judge.

Props for Cornell for seeing the almost reunion as it was and is-some guys having fun that he knows. He’s a cool guy.

Also as an artist, and as a person you evolve over the years. You should have the ability to try new things as you go, and it’s a pity a lot of people are critical of his latest work and saying it shouldn’t have even been put out. It isn’t everyone’s cup of tea(not really mine, but it is for some), but kudos to him for doing something new and experimental like he wanted. It’s a lot better than being like U2, and basically disowning POP since the sales were poor and it was lambasted by the critics. Stand up for your work. POP was better than their last two albums IMO, but art is open for interpretation.

Rock on.

i listened to the whole scream album and it was deppresing….. it sounded like every other timbaland hip hop record except with subdued cornell vocals. I hope that he makes the right decision and returns to what he excells at and doesnt “like the feeling” again

Badmotorfinger | 4/6/2009, 9:45 pm EST

I’ve loved Soundgarden and Chris Cornell since I first heard Badmotorfinger. Loved Temple of The Dog, Seasons, and Euphoria Morning (Chris’s first solo album.) Audioslave was fun while it lasted, though it was never Soundgarden.

Thought the follow up solo album was uninspired.

Was excited, in a “well if Cornell is doing an album with Timbaland, it’ll be unique and worth a listen. Might even blow other pop albums out of the water ” kind of way.

But alas, it is a pathetic album. Cornell’s voice is still pretty darn good. But it sounds like the 98% of crap music that I’d always assumed an artist like Chris didn’t like. I respect him, and respect his decision as an artist to try something unexpected and unique.

The good news is: there won’t be a second album like this from Cornell. And a Soundgarden reunion is more likely than ever.

I’m glad Reznor is speaking out to slam Scream. More Cornell fans should. Honestly, it IS embarrassing. When I heard Cornell was coming to my home town of Ann Arbor this month, I was planning to buy a plane ticket to fly back there to see him. Then I heard the new songs on his website, and decided I can’t support this direction.

It pains no one more than me to say this, but Scream is simply a disaster, and I fear what it will do to Cornell’s reputation.

Chris, you are at the top of my list when it comes to artists… you are a genius song writer and one of the best voices in rock history. And obviously you’re willing to take chances, i.e. Audioslave.

That was a risk, and I’m glad you did it. It wasn’t Soundgarden, but it worked. But Chris… please listen… this one just doesn’t work. Trust me.

Yes, it’s still your voice… still your great heartfelt lyrics. But what the hell were you thinking letting Timbaland fuck up your songs!!?

Those idiots at the label who pushed for this in the first place should be ashamed of themselves. And so should your manager for letting you do it.

Why not just do a single with Timbaland? Why did you have to do the entire CD that way? No one’s going to buy it. There’s something to be said for jumping in head first, but holy shit, you gotta make sure there’s at least some water in the pool first, don’t you?

This was an ill-fated project to begin with. You should scrap all the rap-induced background noise and re-release the disk without it. I’m begging you. This rock/rap/electronic thing works with some artists… Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, Cake, Beck and others. Even Maynard dabbles in this stuff with his new project Puscifer. But none of these artists are Chris Cornell. And this isn’t you, Chris.

Suprisingly | 4/7/2009, 9:09 am EST

The three bonus tracks at the online vendors (each has one) are the most lively and catchy “Rock” songs. They each could be a single and do really well, they don’t fit the subdued, I’m trying to get invited in instead of a peck on the cheek vibe of the album. And the material from Screams comes off more natural live, and deserves to be heard in that context before being dismissed entirely.

common sense | 4/7/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Strikes me that CC might have been a touch more likely to jump onstage for a spontaneous Soundgarden reunion if it hadn’t been held in a Seattle club co-owned and presided over by his ex-wife – the one who held onto his guitars for four years and sent a P.I. to harrass him in his home. Not very bright of the other guys, unless of course they meant to exclude him.

Eric | 4/7/2009, 3:19 pm EST

I love all his material and while the new album is a departure it is enjoyable. Glad to hear someone has the balls to do something “outside the box”

Love the album Chris

“They didn’t get it. That was exciting, actually. I like that feeling.” Yea well say whatever Chris but u sure as hell wont be liking that feeling when u got barely any fans left to buy ur music.

Mykl | 4/8/2009, 9:23 am EST

Yeah Chris will reunite now that this album has beaten his credit and career down. Do a Soundgarden reunion cause there is STILL great songs to write and you guys can get along. Reznor called your ass out on the direction you went so I would start with him working in the studio and get back the rep you once had.

tony montana | 4/8/2009, 9:35 am EST

face it chris:
soundgarden was a supergroup who put out arguably the finest grunge album of the lot (superunknown).
togther you had a certain chemistry that neither of you have on your own.
do you think that that magical chemistry could mean that you were meant to play together?
with such masterful crrations like badmotorfinger and superunknown…i’d say so.
do what is your destiny.

I’ve been a Soundgarden fan since Screaming Life/FOPP and as much as I’ve wanting a reunion. I don’t think it will ever happen. PROVE ME WRONG!!!

KimThayilisGod | 4/8/2009, 9:46 pm EST

It’s amazing how releasing a career-destroying album makes you suddenly open to reuniting with one of the greatest hard rock bands ever.

Moasi Faleauto | 4/11/2009, 6:10 am EST

Cornell is an amazing artist, one of the kings of grunge, but hes old as fuck now and trying to blend in to this new kind of music, if he had adapted a few years earlier I imagine he would have sounded more like The Strokes or something bearable. It’s all just bad timing. Soundgarden should really reunite with a new album. imagine how fucking wicked that would be. All his fans would respect him again. I would. Fuck, Scream what was he thinking…

jojo | 4/13/2009, 12:10 pm EST

I think this whole Scream album was a bad dream or funk that he didnt realize he was in. The fact that the other guys from SG got together and played not just “single” song but deep cuts live…triggered something in CC’s head and realized a reunion in w/ those guys won’t be so bad…as long as the ex is not involved…totally understandable.

Hedgehog | 4/19/2009, 11:05 pm EST

I loved the songs from Scream when I heard them LIVE on youtube…but not the studio version with Timba yapping in the background. The songs are actually really good, just didn’t like Timba’s parts. And I love all the other stuff CC did.

Johnny Supplément | 4/23/2009, 11:10 am EST

I always did prefer soundgarden with Yamamoto/Everman. Mark Arm should give Jason Everman a phonecall for a new classic subpop album. It should be like a beefsteak with a whiff of Tad!!!

The Red Running Dog, Paris France.

Fish | 4/27/2009, 12:51 pm EST

Please don’t reunite! You will destroy the spirit of what Tadgarden was able to accomplish. Tad and the rest of those guys didn’t change. Cornhole did. He doesn’t get it anymore. He would make it a joke. Props to the soundgarden guys for enlisting Tad for the show. It was like watching an old SG show.

Zane | 4/27/2009, 2:01 pm EST

I hope there is a Soundgarden reunion. All of Chris Cornell’s music is amazing, all of it, even Scream. No one is looking at this open mindedly. But he has forever to make his own music, but right now would be great for a new Soundgarden album.

I’m sure your record company didn’t “like that feeling” Chris.

I wish you would do what you do best, ROCK music. Your an ICON of a generation and the reason i still play in a band.

There will be no permanent reunion as long as Matt is in a little band called Pearl Jam.

Where is Jason Everman? (the come-back kid)…

rob Lee | 6/15/2009, 9:44 pm EST

Soundgarden rules. I have been waiting for soundgarden to reunite since they broke up. CC needs to get the SG going again. He has a lot of SG fans just waiting for it. I personally think SG was where Chris Cornell was the best.

Avacado | 6/24/2009, 1:27 pm EST

I saw Chris live recently doing some of the songs from Scream. I liked them but, of course, Timbaland wasn’t there messing them up. He also did some Led Zep stuff that was amazing. I don’t think Chris ever intended in staying in the genre of music on Scream. It was something different to try for him. Not to worry. He’ll be back with Soundgarden or something comparable.

I like the comment about Jason Everman….Gets kicked out of Nirvana then they go huge, gets kicked out of soudgarden before their biggest record Superunknown….that dude has no luck

Good article!!!I seen Soundgarden (4)times,The best memories I have of the band was when,Voi Vod,headlined,Soundgarden,in the middle, and Faith No More opened!Let me tell ya it was at this small club in Trenton,N.J.it was called(City Gardens),Man after Faith,&before Soundgarden,I was getting loaded at the bar and next thing I know Jim Martin is sitting next to me,bought him a beer, told good show he was very cool&humble!!Soundgarden started the show with Flower, and did damn near the whole(Load Love)disc,it was brilliant!!!Voi Vod came out did some good stuff, didn`t hear of these Canucks before! But they did a cover of Pink Floyd`s(Astronomy domony)shees man that was Floyd on a industrial, speed metal acid trip, with a little methanphedamines on top!All in all if these get back together, count me in!This time I`m bringing my kids!P.S. Forgot to mention,as I walked out of that show,I had a S.G.shirt on I bought the week before in Philly,Pa trocadaro and as I walked out the front entrance and theres Kim Thyl, saying I seen you out there slamming and rocking,I said no man you rocked!I handed him my plastic beer cup and he signed it,and I remember saying to myself that’s one down to earth dude!Hail the new dawn of Soundgarden!!!

The Bleach & Loud love tours by Soundgarden / Nirvana in 1989/90 were amazing and Jason Everman should be very proud of those early grunge years!!!
