Bob Dylan Reveals “Together Through Life” Track “Feel A Change Comin’ On”

4/6/09, 3:47 pm EST

Last week Bob Dylan gave fans a free download of “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ “ from his upcoming Together Through Life. Now “Feel A Change Comin’ On,” the second-to-last track off the disc, is streaming over at Newsweek.com. Like “Beyond Here,” “Feel A Change” has that border café feel, thanks in part to accordion from Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo. “I’ve been listening to Billy Joe Shaver and I’m reading James Joyce, some people, they tell me I’ve got the blood of the land in my voice,” Dylan sings in a gravely voice.

As Rolling Stone noted in our Spring Music Preview, “Feel A Change” features “Dylan’s black sense of humor and pessimistic worldview” and fits in among the album’s “Delta-blues riffs, hard-swinging shuffles and country ballads.” Together Through Life is due out April 28th. “You would never expect the record after Modern Times to sound like this,” a source in the Dylan camp told Rolling Stone. “Bob takes all of those disparate elements you hear and puts them into a track. But you can’t put your finger on it — ‘It sounds exactly like that.’ That’s why he’s so original.”

In addition, the third part of Dylan’s ongoing pre-album interview with author Bill Flanagan has been posted on Newsweek’s Pop Vox, with Dylan touching upon topics like Barack Obama, the Civil War and presidential autobiographies. Talking about the literary skills Obama showcased in Dreams From My Father, Dylan says, “His writing style hits you on more than one level. It makes you feel and think at the same time, and that is hard to do. He says profoundly outrageous things. He’s looking at a shrunken head inside of a glass case in some museum with a bunch of other people, and he’s wondering if any of these people realize that they could be looking at one of their ancestors.”

Pop stars are too old when they hit twenty-five. That’s why I listen to Mahler

josh | 4/6/2009, 11:01 pm EST

Yeah, maybe, and you’re young as shit! What’s your point?

I’d rather get classy Bob Dylan news than lame bullshit about Chris Brown, Fallout Boy, or whatever flavor of the week is out there. This guy has survived every one of your sorry-ass trends, for over forty years, so either show some respect or leave it alone!

Please, do not respond to Internet Trolls like this “maybe” guy.
Sad guys whose only purpose is to disrupt formus and change the subject of the discussion.

Instead of talking about Mr.Dylan´s exciting new music, we are wasting our time with this person.
If everyone ignore him, he´ll get bored and leave.

Kids just don’t understand the concept of music vs entertainment. Most of the junk out today is entertainment. There is some good stuff out there, but it is not most of the junk on the Billboard charts. Kids like whats fed to them, not what they seek out on their own.

No one has to defend Zimmy. We all know that. Let them say what they want. Close to 50 years later & he’s still relevant & people still listen when he speaks. I’m happy he’s still doin’ it.

Luke | 4/8/2009, 4:40 am EST

Bob’s about as profound as you get, will be an enormous pity when he’s not here anymore. Hope he’s got more new music in him after this one. Can’t wait to see him next week in Rome and Florence!

One thing: just wish he’d play the guitar more!
rock and roll

paulmac | 4/8/2009, 10:02 am EST

I`m sure Dylan would smile reading all of this, then without wasting any of his genius mind, would rise above it and quickly forget it. This album will become a part of musical history, like it or not.

New kids on the block can only aspire to his success and longevity, 99.999% of them will never make it to these heights.

Goldfire | 4/8/2009, 11:28 am EST

What does being old have to with anything. His music is brilliant and wonderful as always. If you can’t appreciate great music because it’s “old” then I feel sorry for you.

You could put all these new pop/rock/(c)rap stars together and you still wouldn’t amass all the talent contained in Sir Dylans left pinky finger.

Audrey | 4/8/2009, 11:56 am EST

Bobby’s music is filled with space and substance, mystery and poetry, feeling and longing, heart and soul. Wicked humour too. Feed your mind. Feed your soul. Thank you.

youngnotstupid | 4/8/2009, 12:04 pm EST

I’m young but I appreciate Bob Dylan to the fullest. I love The Who, and I love new stuff that dfoesn’t suck. Don’t overgeneralize and assume all young people these days are idiots who all love marketing schemes like Taylor Swift or crap posing rock music like Fall Out Boy. Some of us still have soul and a lot of us still appreciate Dylan and all the wisdom he has shared.

Joe | 4/9/2009, 2:59 pm EST

Dylan’s words and music will be around long after we’re gone, and they’ll still be trying to figure him out. His songwriting goes way deep and continues to break new ground. No one else comes close. And by the way Taylor Swift, for an 18 year old, writes some good songs.

Verna | 4/16/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Would you believe that Dylan broke up my marriage. He didn’t know me, nor I him. It was the 60’s and I was tired of the expensive theater tickets and entertaining my husbands clients. I was playing the guitar and folk music at that time and heard “Masters of War” That was it! I went to all his concerts in N.Y. and one in Forest Hills. I remember the first time he came out after the intermission with his electric guitar. He was booed by the audience and Bob said “Ah come on, give me a break” I continue to love him, his songs, his stories and the change he made for me. I took off to walk a different path in my life. Thanks Bob, Love, Verna`

:) maybe, I thought that too a long time ago when my Father listened to Hank Williams.

Love, love love Bobby’s music, its all good!!

susi | 4/21/2009, 2:18 am EST

I’m an old “gal” and I care. Listen to Bob ALL the time. Bring on more new songs, I say!

Daryl | 4/23/2009, 8:55 pm EST

I love classic Dylan but sometimes wonder why that blinkered, genuflecting admiration club never mentions his voice today is about as tangible as the emperors new clothes. I also wonder whether he occasionally chuckles to himself after dashing off some cryptic, meaningless lyric about how it will be interpreted, dissected, and analyzed a thousand times over by reverent devotees searching for hidden clues to the meaning of existence…

cjs | 4/28/2009, 3:15 pm EST

This is a great record. Its a vison of Dylan just kicking back, writing a collection of songs and enjoying his time recording them.
A quintessential Dylan record.

pd | 4/28/2009, 5:24 pm EST

The Bobster just keeps cranking them out Truly one of America’s greatest artists ever. Who else took rock in a serious direction, then in every direction? Nobody but Bob. He is the unchallenged king.

shndlr | 4/28/2009, 7:39 pm EST

I’m lookin’ forward to this one. Sounds like Bob is real loose, comfortable, and having fun. I like the Robert Hunter input also.

My only complaint with Bob these days? Simple. I wish he would address, head on, the absurd laws against marijuana. Alcohol is a legal, deadly, and addictive hard drug that causes more death and social wreckage than illicit drugs combined. And he who wrote so eloquently about other social injustices is the perfect messenger for this long overdue legal correction. He did say “everybody must get stoned”, which I agree with, or everybody should be able to. So please, Bob, help clear the path. In fact, I will donate a catchy, infectious title, for the song you need to write – no charge baby – “Move Those Bars!”

what a ripoff together through life is!
