Run-DMC Says They Won’t Perform At Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

Contrary to earlier reports, Run-DMC will not perform at this Saturday’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, DMC told MTV News this week. Instead, the Rock Hall will present a video tribute to the rap trio. Run-DMC lost their DJ, Jason “Jam-Master Jay” Mizell, in a still-unsolved shooting in 2002. After the murder, both Joseph “Run” Simmons and Daryl “DMC” McDaniels swore never to perform without JMJ again, a pledge the pair will keep at this weekend’s ceremony when they join Metallica, Jeff Beck, Wanda Jackson, Bobby Womack and Little Anthony & the Imperials at the induction.

According to MTV, following the announcement that Run-DMC would be the second hip-hop act inducted into the Rock Hall (following Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five), Run said he’d leave the decision regarding whether or not to perform at the ceremony to McDaniels, who declined. “For me, I tell people, ‘Do you want to see me and Run running around without Jay?’ ” DMC told MTV News. “They tell me I could get Grandmaster Flash [to fill in]. But I can get any DJ in the world if I want. It wouldn’t be right. I can’t replace my drummer.”

While any hope of a all-star performance of “Walk This Way” and “Rock Box” seem dashed, the rappers will still be on hand in Cleveland to accept the honor. As Rock Daily previously revealed, Eminem will help induct the rap group into the Hall.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony will air this Saturday, April 4th, on Fuse and Rolling Stone will be on the ground in Cleveland with a behind-the-scenes report, interviews and photos from the induction. Stick with our Rock Hall hub for all the latest coverage.

Is Alice Cooper Performing ? | 4/3/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Is Alice Cooper or Deep Purple
going to perform ?
They have to be getting inducted
why on earth would RUN-DMC be
inducted before Alice Cooper
or Deep Purple

KISS, ALICE COOPER????? | 4/3/2009, 5:36 pm EST

IM a very proud fan of metallica and congragulate them into the hall, but what is the deal with Run DMC! This system is flawed!!!

Anonymous | 4/3/2009, 6:19 pm EST

they should get the beastie boys to perform instead…

K | 4/3/2009, 7:03 pm EST

No Rush or Cheap Trick????……bollocks!

kcv | 4/3/2009, 8:06 pm EST

next year this is who i wanna see get in:

CHEAP TRICK
KISS
RUSH
THIN LIZZY
BLUE OYSTER CULT

Dude Man | 4/3/2009, 10:38 pm EST

Why is Run DMC even being inducted into a rock and roll hall of fame? This hall is a complete joke. They had to make an annex because no one was going to it. Deep Purple is my favorite band and they will never get inducted. The people that run this museum have inducted pop and rap acts instead of rock musicians.

bobgeorge | 4/3/2009, 10:40 pm EST

To KISS, ALICE COOPER????,
Why don’t you have a problem with Metallica getting in before Alice C. and Kiss? You’ve obviously never listened to RUN DMC’s first two albums, which featured a lot of rock guitar, despite being a hip-hop group. Plus, as everyone knows by now, RUN DMC’s cover of “Walk This Way” revived Aerosmith’s career. However, I do agree that both Kiss and Alice Cooper should’ve been in the Hall before both Metallica and RUN DMC. Maybe it’s because both Kiss (’Destroyer’) and Alice C. (Billion Dollar Babies) made only one good studio album during their long careers, or their impact on the musical landscape wasn’t as far reaching on other groups despite being popular. I think it has more to do with Metallica and RUN DMC both being pioneers of their respective sub-genre within the history of rock.

The Coop | 4/4/2009, 9:32 am EST

The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is just a joke now. Alice Cooper should’ve been in it a long time ago.

MAZE | 4/4/2009, 10:14 am EST

Nice move Run DMC. The mark of a great artist is knowing when to stop. Whoever doesn’t think these guys deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame must not know anything about them.

MCD | 4/4/2009, 11:23 am EST

Alice Cooper and just about all heavy metal acts play straight garbage that’s why Run-Dmc got in before him. Led Zepellin is the only exception to this.

Dude Man | 4/4/2009, 11:34 am EST

Hey MCD all Run DMC did was sample from rock artists, whick means they don’t belong in this hall. Heavy metal is one of the longest lasting rock subgenres and these artists belong in the hall. Live with it.

ummm | 4/4/2009, 11:52 am EST

if run dmc is in the rock and roll hall of fame, we need to put limp bizkit in the rap hall of fame. they had more top 40 hits than run dmc anyway.

if the rnrhof is going for diversity, how about living colour? vernon reid is amazing. and they are a rock band, they have that going for them.

haha | 4/4/2009, 11:57 am EST

even if they did perform, what would they do, play “walk this way” three times in a row? I guess “it’s tricky” has a three note riff. They could combine a performance of “it’s tricky” with a first guitar lesson for 20 third graders.

Stark Industries | 4/4/2009, 2:05 pm EST

None of you, and I mean NONE of you will EVER get to see your wishes come true in regards to the Bush/Cheney-like scam that is the RRHOF, especially in reagrds to those who choose who goes in and who doesn’t. The irony…?, the irony is that some of the people that are in charge of the RRHOF wrote, (or at least published) some fairly eloquent pieces that dealt with themes of misuse of power and pulling the wool over a demographic that once prided itself in being in the “know”, and questioning authority. I am FULLY AWARE that there are much more important issues in the world, and believe I pay those issues from war and economy to the price of diapers. However, when something that I hold very dear, very close to my heart for so many reasons made into a mockery by the types of people who rock once fought against; it breaks my heart and frustrates the hell out of me. I hope tonight the ghost of Ron Asheton takes a paranormal piss from the grave right into your champagne glass Jann. HAIL HAIL ROCK AND ROLL!!!!

belardo | 4/4/2009, 2:25 pm EST

i think its a disgrace that Alice Cooper has not been inducted,KISS also. Two groups that paved the way for Metallica and many others.

wheezybabie | 4/4/2009, 3:14 pm EST

i luv u lil wheezy

Dude Man | 4/4/2009, 3:16 pm EST

Living Colour is sadly not eligible until the year 2013. It takes 25 years after your first album, Vivid was released in 1988. I hope they get in when the time comes, but black rock n roll artists that are eligible are Bad Brains and Chubby Checker just to name a few. And for the last time rap is not a rock subgenre. Rap being called a rock subgenre, that’s like saying basketball is a baseball subgenre. With the idea that rap and rock are the same then Metallica could be inducted into a hip-hop hall of fame and that would make no sense.

hey | 4/4/2009, 3:24 pm EST

i heard run dmc won’t perform cuz they’re offended that rush hasn’t been inducted yet..

just kidding.. run dmc doesn’t care about rock music!!!

T-Rev | 4/4/2009, 4:03 pm EST

I sure wish these retards could have pulled their heads out of their ass and gotten The Stooges in there before Ron died.

Dude Man | 4/4/2009, 4:28 pm EST

One final comment. I think its funny how DMC says,”I can’t replace my drummer.” considering spining a record is not playing drums.

weegie | 4/4/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Ok mooks, let Weegie explain it to you for the 123rd time – The Hall is for “Popular Music”, ie – Non-Classical or Jazz music made aprrox. after 1925 when the first blues records were recorded. Rock and Roll is a hybrid of all sorts of music, blues and country mostly, and it continues to give birth to new hybrids. Ok ? Got it Mookies ? That means Hank Williams is in, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, and yes, Run DMC.
You’re really amazed KISS (smirks), Deep Purple (laughs), RUSH (huge laugh and grimace) aren’t in the hall ? They are TERRIBLE bands. It could be why they aren’t in the hall ;)

OU2Kast | 4/4/2009, 5:29 pm EST

I think it’s hilarious that all the closeminded rockers here are aghast at Run-DMC’s inclusion…ok, so Rush should be in, but that means we should be anrgy at DMC? Get a life. They’re great and most certainly deserve inclusion…and KISS? DMC doesn’t deserve it, but the garbage that KISS made earns them a spot? What a joke

Jungleland2 | 4/4/2009, 5:56 pm EST

“But I can get any DJ in the world if I want. It wouldn’t be right. I can’t replace my drummer.”

DMC is so damn cool. He is as ROCK AND ROLL as anyone with a guitar. Run DMC is New York Punk Rock

Chon Chon Rodriguez | 4/4/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Ok….how does Leonard Cohen get in before Tom Waits?

Dude Man | 4/4/2009, 8:21 pm EST

That’s it screw the last satement thing. First off weegie 123 times you fail to realize that the name of the hall is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, not the Popular music hall of fame. 123 times you fail to realize that the only artists that are not of the rock and roll genre that should be inducted are the blues artists of the early part of the 20th century artists in the early influences category. 123 times you fail to realize we not closeminded, we have nothing against those hip-hip/pop fans, it’s just that their music is not the same as this music. 123 times you fail to realize that Deep Purple and Rush are rock bands that have sold millions and have huge fan bases. Even though I’m not a Kiss fan and I actually don’t like any of their music, I can’t deny they belong in for their huge influence and ability to fill stadiums in their prime. 123 times you fail to realize that mookie is not a real word and that smiley faces on your posts make you seem like a jerk. And for the others who believe we are closeminded fans have to look at the facts, wikipedia doesn’t even list rap as a rock subgenre, billboard charts don’t list rap as a rock subgenre, and we don’t list rap as a rock subgenre. It doesn’t matter if you think DMC is “cool” just let me say this, rock and roll is not defined by attitude. Rock and roll is defined by the people who play that music. It is defined by Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and the others who deicated themselves to this sound.

screw rock hall the whole thing is flawed!!! WHERES KISS THIS ISNT THE MINORITY HALL OF FAME!!!!!!

rigged | 4/4/2009, 10:12 pm EST

Neil Diamond isn’t in the Hall of Fame.
Neither is Jethro Tull.
Or Moody Blues.
Or Deep Purple.
But Blondie and Madonna and RunDMC are in!

mb | 4/5/2009, 12:02 am EST

Moody Blues, damnit!!!!!!!

Ray | 4/5/2009, 12:14 am EST

To Stark Industries:

There is a place reserved for you in Rock & Roll Heaven. Your comment was right on the money!

And when in hell does Chicago get in?

henry jones | 4/5/2009, 2:03 am EST

DJ Fontana was supposed to play drums on jailhouse rock. Was that song performed at the ceremony? I was hoping to see DJ get up on stage and play drums with metallica at the end of the show

Dan | 4/5/2009, 8:37 pm EST

Run-DMC are PURE rock n roll. If you don’t get it, fuck you.

iLly | 4/5/2009, 11:31 pm EST

By the way, congratulations Metallica, for being the greatest metal band to ever rock the god damn world.

Jack Kelleher | 4/6/2009, 12:49 am EST

It’s weird -20+ years ago their video for “King of Rock” had Run DMC touring the Rock Hall of Fame and being laughed out by Larry Bud Melmon for being rappers-”every time we play we break 2 needles -there’s 3 of us but we’re not the Beatles!”

Anonymous | 4/6/2009, 1:38 am EST

Many of you don’t understand that being a “rock band” is not not the only qualification for being inducted. What I’ve noticed is the two main threads that many of the inductees have is innovation, selling success or both. Nothing comes before the innovation. Rock n Roll means rebellion, people who made there own path. Run Dmc is a rock n roll as Led Kep minus the amps, and guitars. The attitude is the same.

Ignore that last comment. i didn’t know you had to wait 25 years from your first record to be inducted.

Dude Man | 4/6/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Rock n’ Roll is not defined by rebellion. If it was Charles Manson should be inducted. If there was a rap HoF would AC/DC, Aerosmith, and Led Zepplin be inducted. Their music was rebellious and sampled by rap artists.
