Lauryn Hill to Return to the Stage at Montreux Jazz Festival

Somehow Rock Daily missed this earlier today when we mentioned the headliners for Europe’s prestigious Montreux Jazz festival: Lauryn Hill is one of the 1,000 artists booked for the event, which is in its 43rd year. The Swiss fest runs from July 3-18th. Per Reuters, Hill will play the Stravinski Auditorium on July 11th after a tribute to Nina Simone, which features Dianne Reeves, Lizz Wright and Angelique Kidjo.

Hill’s most recent public appearance came in October 2008, when a photographer caught her hanging out with Martha Stewart at a book signing in her native New Jersey. Prior to that, she last took the stage in August 2007, when she performed a two-hour-plus set in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood. The free concert drew a giant crowd, and included a brief set of Bob Marley songs, a run through of Fugees hits and a cover of Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” That show came just weeks after Hill’s former Fugee bandmates, Wyclef Jean and Pras, had complained to the press that she was stopping the group from reuniting (they last took the stage together in February 2006). There’s been little concrete information about Hill’s musical plans. She has reportedly been working on a solo album since 2004.

Last August to mark the 10th anniversary of Hill’s blockbuster The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Rolling Stone spoke to many of those responsible for making the LP for an exclusive oral history.

“Miseducation” is a CLASSIC. I miss Lauryn so much, and really hope that she will eventually put out a 2nd studio album. The music industry is in need of a breath of fresh air — and Lauryn’s soulful voice and intelligent rhymes are what’s missing in an industry so full of filler and lackluster talent.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of the best albums in the past 20 years, and it’s really sad she allowed her neuroses to get the best of her. She was on top of the world, and she let everyone down. She even had a chance to redeem herself by reuniting with The Fugees, but once again, Lauryn’s crazy side broke loose, and everybody had no choice but to give up on her once more. She’s really starting to resemble Axl Rose, in terms of her behavior. And it’s been 10 years since she released an album, 7 more years, and she’ll be right on par with Mr. Brownstone. I won’t be surprised if her next record is called Cuban Democracy. :P

I don’t understand why people bash Lauren, she made great music then settled down to raise some babies, I say good for her.

I believe you need to watch what you say about people. Especially if your opinion is being fed by the press. I’m sure making an album is not at the top of your list when you are having children. Only a parent would understand…… In my book she is beautiful and I look forward to her next album.

I love Lauren Hill. There will never ever be another female artist as talented as her in my eyes. And as far as her being “crazy” are we all a little crazy sometimes. LOL

I too love lauryn hill. She’s became too wise to what was going on in our world and her amazing conscience wouldn’t allow her to lavish in all the glory of fame and the superficial high life when there was so much suffering corruption, deceit, hate and barbaric cruelty in the world. I believe she’s an angelic spirit sent with an important message to us all. Her mis-education cd is a masterpiece imho. She probably could have been our female bob Marley if she could have adjusted to fame better.

Love you Lauryn

Peace and love to everyone else as well :p)
