The Top 10 Passive-Aggressive Moments in Rock

4/2/09, 7:43 pm EST

Trent Reznor’s April Fool’s prank yesterday was essentially just another swipe at Chris Cornell, whose new album Scream is clearly not a NIN favorite. The hoax was amusing, but a pretty indirect way of getting his message across (why not just call up Cornell and read him your album review, Trent?). It also made us think back to some of rock’s other moments of passive-aggressive behavior. Here’s a top 10:

Billy Corgan’s “Drummer Wanted” Ad: No personal statement about the departure of longtime collaborator Jimmy Chamberlin — just a note distributed by Smashing Pumpkins’ publicist announcing an open call for drummers.

Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River” Video: Rather than reveal how Britney broke his heart the traditional way, JT cast a Spears lookalike in the clip for his cheating song. “You don’t have to say what you did …” — now you don’t!

Trent Reznor’s First Scream Slam: The Nine Inch Nails leader let Chris Cornell — and the rest of the Internet-using world — know how much he despises the Timbaland-produced album by Twittering, “You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell’s record? Jesus.”

Van Halen Erase Michael Anthony From History: After announcing their reunion tour in August 2007, Van Halen appeared to have airbrushed original bassist Michael Anthony from the album covers posted on their Website, replacing him with Wolfgang Van Halen, who was born 13 years after their self-titled debut.

The Pixies Break-Up Fax: Frank Black dissolved his iconic band in the summer of 1992 the most impersonal way possible (pre-email, that is) — a written note. “I just wrote a fax and sent it and just skipped out without so much as an explanation, as I recall,” he has said. “I didn’t want to have a band meeting and discuss it.”

Destiny’s Child Drop Two Members Via Video: D-Child fans discovered Letoya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson were no longer members of Beyoncé’s group when they saw two new singers in the video for “Say My Name.” Interestingly enough, that’s how Luckett and Roberson got the news, too.

Guns n’ Roses Ask “Where’s Izzy?”: Stradlin didn’t make it to the band’s 1991 shoot for the “Don’t Cry” video, so keyboardist Dizzy Reed helpfully donned a T-shirt bearing the question, “Where’s Izzy?”

50 Cent Puts the Game in a Thong: At the height of their 2006 beef, the Game showed off photos of G-Unit dressed like the Village People. 50 retaliated by releasing a mixtape fronted by a Photoshopped image of Game in a g-string.

Courtney Love Blasts Billy Corgan on Myspace: Before Twitter, MySpace was Courtney Love’s favorite forum, and she took to it in July 2008 to send the Smashing Pumpkins leader a note about missing daughter Frances Bean’s birthday bash: “My child sobbing, due to you, is unacceptable.”

Prince Fends Off Fans … in Song: When Prince fans rabble-roused about the star’s clampdown on unauthorized use of his songs and images online, the Purple One responded by registering the domain Princefamsunited.com (he’s since pulled it down) and posting a seven-minute fan-dissing funk jam called “PFUnk.”

For grins, I went to the address you posted for the Prince bit (Princefamsunited.com[sic]) and it wasn’t working. Changed the M to N, and I don’t think that site means what you think it means. It looks like that site was created by Prince fans, not Prince.

Trent’s trying to get some free column inches for himself off the back of the “Scream” net controversy. Actually all he’s doing is advertising Cornell’s album for him while making himself look like a bitchy schoolgirl.

Garrett | 4/2/2009, 9:32 pm EST

@ Jen – Yeah, but it’s not like it makes a difference. Sure, Cornell gets attention, but everyone’s just going to steal it to see how terrible it really is, and then wipe it from their hard drives so no one can ever know it was there.

How about the Dinosaur Jr breakup where J & Murph told Lou the band was over and he only found out otherwise when be saw them on MTV’s 120 minutes asking for bass players to join them in support of a new album

Bill O'Reilly-NOT | 4/3/2009, 9:39 am EST

Trent’s a pinhead. Cornell’s a patriot. (He saved a little girl from the pit area at one of his Texas concerts. She was being crowded into the rail.)

jayc | 4/3/2009, 10:21 am EST

has anybody listened to the new Cornell? it sucks. Trent is just making a point at “overproduction” with ProTools.

ps..what is a little girl doing in a pit at a concert?

May favorite was when the Offspring announced about 2 years ago that their new album would be called “Chinese Democracy”

StrummerJones | 4/3/2009, 10:31 am EST

Man, you guys had trouble filling the list. I know about that Guns one, but that was just a bit lame.

You should make a straight up aggressive list.

Number one? Eminem performs Kim at a concert. Kim watches as he mutilates a doll of her, and she attempts suicide after seeing this.

Number two? Eminem takes his daughter into the studio to do a song about killing her mother.

My point is that Eminem is a god damned freak and that list would be as entertaining as hell.

aaronG | 4/3/2009, 10:46 am EST

i don’t really think trent’s dis can be considered “passive.”

Adam | 4/3/2009, 12:40 pm EST

Hopefully Prince will have a few less million fans after that crap. What a D bag. However, the D bag gold metal goes to Van Halen. But that’s no surprise since everyone knows what an ahole Eddie is.

The Hater | 4/3/2009, 1:49 pm EST

What about Oasis wishing AIDS upon Blur?

Velhinho | 4/3/2009, 5:08 pm EST

You guys forgot Page and Plant not including John Paul Jones in their reunion… And Plant disbanding Page in 1998 because Page wanted to play more Zeppelin songs in stadiums. And Plant, again, disbanding Page, Jones and Jason after their O2 show in 2007 to became a country lite with Alisson Krauss…what a shame.

Dude Man | 4/3/2009, 6:10 pm EST

I’m afraid this article is false advertising. 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake, and Destiny’s Child are not rock musicians. Rolling Stone writers please change this to the top 10 passive-aggressive moments in POP history. No wonder the hall of fame can’t get it right with you guys advertising that all music is rock.

leo3375 | 4/3/2009, 9:23 pm EST

Went to the VH site and M. Anthony is still on the covers. Unless there’s a diff site than van-halen.com.

Los Angeles | 4/3/2009, 11:22 pm EST

Leviathant–

The article says that he has since pulled down the site.

jplee | 4/4/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Where is all of the Keith Moon fun stuff?

Where is all of the Keith Moon fun stuff?

Neilzebub | 4/5/2009, 3:42 pm EST

Levianthant, that is inconceivable!

Someone | 4/5/2009, 4:47 pm EST

Trent Reznor is the man. I love Soundgarden and I even liked Audioslave, but Scream is a big piece of shit. Don’t hate the man for telling it like it is.

Jack Kelleher | 4/6/2009, 12:59 am EST

None of the people mentioned have any class -so…..

pumpkinhead | 4/6/2009, 11:32 pm EST

actually, the smashing pumpkins announced the departure of jimmy like 10 days before the advertisement seeking a new drummer.

jen-jen | 4/8/2009, 5:17 am EST

Trent is the man! but I gotta say, what about the dis to Manson with star f***ers? although I have to say Cornell suck now too

wheresizzy457 | 4/16/2009, 7:03 pm EST

after izzy left the only new material guns n roses released was the “oh my god” single in 1999 and the “chinese democracy” album in 2008. i think that says enough.

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 10:24 pm EST

What about Pavement’s Gary Young being replaced. He showed up to a band practice one day, and there was another drummer playing with the band.

Luis | 6/1/2009, 5:28 am EST

Rolling Stone MUST stop calling Pop Stars and rappers rock n roll. It’s insulting!
