The New Issue of Rolling Stone: Lil Wayne Goes Rock

How does arguably the greatest rapper on Earth follow up a blockbuster like 2008’s Tha Carter III, an album that moved more than 1 million copies its debut week and solidified Lil Wayne’s place in hip-hop history? By shifting gears and attempting to conquer rock & roll. Rap’s alien genius opens up to Mark Binelli about his upcoming rock album Rebirth in a series of revealing interviews for the cover of the new issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands this week. (Get a look at outtakes from our photo shoot.)

“The rock shit just comes from what my life is now,” Wayne, 26, says. “I’ve grown into this person.” He released his first album, 1999’s Tha Block Is Hot, when he was only 17, and built his name on being the busiest rapper in the game, dropping a relentless stream of mixtapes and cameos. (Revisit Weezy’s journey from kid MC to superstar, in photos.) But aside from plucking at electric guitars onstage and in videos, Weezy never let on that his rap career could take such a significant detour. Describing a wild night when he woke up in bed with three or four women he couldn’t name, Wayne reveals he had an epiphany. “I just got — I’m not going to say ’so good’ at what I was doing, but it became such a regularity for me that I got tired of it. And then I said, ‘You know what? I’m not going to rap on this one.’ “

Binelli follows Wayne from his posh Atlanta apartment to a club showcase where the MC checks out talent for his Young Money imprint to the studio — Wayne’s home away from home — where the superstar puffs his ever-present blunts and plays some Rebirth songs that recall vintage Beastie Boys and current emo, topped by Weezy’s Auto Tuned warbling. Wayne tells Binelli he knew he didn’t have raw vocal talent, but he dedicated himself to learning how to make his singing voice sound good on record. “I don’t want to be the best rapper in the world. Not now,” he says. “I want to be the best. Period. Now. My favorite rapper hasn’t done what I’m doing.”

Rap is Crap | 4/1/2009, 9:10 am EST

LOL, “Rap’s Genius”

Who is this guy and why’s he on the cover of Rolling Stone? My head is going to explode.

dude | 4/1/2009, 9:33 am EST

this dude if really full of himself.’i dont want to be the best rapper in the world….i want to be the best, period’. sorry lil wayne but being an actual musician involves more than just memorizing words and spittin them out on stage. this moron probably doesnt even like actual rock music hez just tryin to prove that he can master another genre that has nothing to do with rap. im gonna enjoy watchin this idiot make a bad attempt to be ‘the best’.

Comfort Inn | 4/1/2009, 9:40 am EST

Nice Cover…what a load of crap

KOL | 4/1/2009, 10:04 am EST

He is cancer to rock.

oh my | 4/1/2009, 10:06 am EST

This could be really awesome or be just terrible, I know his favorite group is nirvana but i dont know about this one. I am just hoping his version of rock does not sound anything like that awful kevin rudolph song “Let it Rock”. BTW Wayne’s latest mixtape was garbage tough to listen to any of it.

KOL | 4/1/2009, 10:07 am EST

Kings of Leon deserve a cover with what they have accomplished this year…along with the music they have made over the past six years. Get you shit together RS!

Maybe | 4/1/2009, 10:12 am EST

Haha

April…fools…?
He’s got to be kidding…

J | 4/1/2009, 10:18 am EST

Cautious optimism…
I’m anxious to hear what he can do, but I’m not expecting Nevermind or Californication or Back in Black.

StrummerJones | 4/1/2009, 10:20 am EST

If this is good, someone finally combined rock and rap (Yeah, right).

If it isn’t, it seems like a harmless side project. Chill out, folks.

Rock | 4/1/2009, 10:25 am EST

Ha. Has anyone heard his new stuff? It is insulting to real rock musicians to label this filth as such.

Auto Tune = Fakery | 4/1/2009, 10:28 am EST

Plant Plant Plant Plant.

Honestly, I dig the production on Lil Wayne’s new tracks…Feels a bit like T.V. On The Radio….I just wish there wasn’t so much AutoTune…It’s what made Kanye’s “808’s” album feel so fake. Cheap.

vinmang | 4/1/2009, 10:31 am EST

listen to im not human one of his rock singles off rebirth i guarentee youll change your mind his delivery in that song is out of this world real talk

Bunny | 4/1/2009, 10:46 am EST

Q: Can Lil Wayne Rock?
A: Probably Not

He looks like the crypt keeper in that photo

wow... | 4/1/2009, 10:50 am EST

THE GUY ISN’T A RAP GENIUS… YOU FOOL

are u kiddin me? | 4/1/2009, 10:51 am EST

what is this dude thinkn? his voice……is horrible…..and the guitar playin sounds like my 5 year old brother …..only my brother can jam!

ouch | 4/1/2009, 10:52 am EST

white man cant jump….black man cant rock!

OMG | 4/1/2009, 10:58 am EST

OMG this guy is soooooooooooooo ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

StrummerJones | 4/1/2009, 11:01 am EST

Prom Queen sucks, but apparently some other stuff is quite a bit better. Keep an open mind, folks. Just because he learned guitar from Kid Rock doesn’t mean that he’ll suck like Kid Rock.

me keeping an open mind | 4/1/2009, 11:16 am EST

Excellent guitar work….for a 3rd grader whos never touched a guitar before……i wont even comment on this dudes singing voice.

Dr. Patio | 4/1/2009, 11:26 am EST

Rolling Stone you really outdid yourself this time!

maybe next month u can put the jonas brothers on your cover!

MISTA-O | 4/1/2009, 11:34 am EST

LIL WAYNE IS DOING HIS THING AND TRYING SOMETHING NEW, HE BEEN THE BEST RAPPER FOR 4 TO 5 YEARS NOW, ITS GETTING OLD TO HIM…SO HE ROCK

Hazz-JB | 4/1/2009, 11:45 am EST

He really doesn’t deserve the amount of hype and popularity he gets. It’s always good to see cross genre stuff but I wish he’d put more effort into it rather than just standing there with a guitar stapped around his neck.

Carter III wasn’t bad but how can anyone call him the best?

StrummerJones | 4/1/2009, 11:46 am EST

“Excellent guitar work….for a 3rd grader whos never touched a guitar before……i wont even comment on this dudes singing voice.”

Dude’s singing voice is grating, but you could say the same thing about Bob Dylan. That’s right, I just compared Lil Wayne to Bob Dylan. Sonically, not lyrically, mind you.

Regarding the guitar, Johnny Ramone played his guitar even worse, and people didn’t seem to mind.

StrummerJones | 4/1/2009, 11:47 am EST

I’m not saying that this will be good. I’m not even saying that I think it will be good. I’m just saying that there’s a chance that it won’t be bad.

cathy p. | 4/1/2009, 11:52 am EST

black men can’t rock??? Ever hear of Jimi Hendrix?????

Jere | 4/1/2009, 11:52 am EST

ouch | 4/1/2009, 10:52 am EST

white man cant jump….black man cant rock!

…JIMI F#&^IN HENDRIX.

jere..... | 4/1/2009, 11:56 am EST

how did i know someone would pluck out jimi or even vernon reid….yes theyre are a few but you get the point….or maybe u dont..

This guy is sub-retarded | 4/1/2009, 11:57 am EST

I love the way he claims to embrace rock music, when I’m sure he’s never listened to more than 30 seconds of it. It’s telling that when he’s asked who his favorite rock band is, he says Nirvana. This is easily the most predictable answer from anyone who has never listened to much rock music. Not that Nirvana weren’t a good band. Critics put them on a pedestal–way too high for that matter–so this guy goes and runs with it cause it’s the first one that pops into his pea-sized brain. I’m all for artists trying new and different things, but this is asinine. He has no idea what goes into solid rock music, and people are going to spend their money on this–that’s the sad part.

pachahead | 4/1/2009, 11:57 am EST

Today in the music industry people or artists dont take risks,is important for somebody bet in a record out of what you been doing for the latest years.I hope the good for weezy in his rock album.

manouche | 4/1/2009, 12:09 pm EST

he is a rapper, so he can’t sing, and can’t rock! omg, he is so ugly…never put him on the cover again, please!

Hung-dog-daddy | 4/1/2009, 12:10 pm EST

It just saddens me that real rock music will not make it onto playlists of radio stations because Lil’ Wayne’s “rock” attempt will fill the rock quotas of top 40 stations. Worse, there’s a garage or bar somewhere with some really talented rockers who are waiting for a deal and starving, while Lil’ Wayne gets his rock “fix” before he moves on. Sad.

god ween satan | 4/1/2009, 12:15 pm EST

Like people have previously said, I’m all for people trying out new genres and stuff…but when Lil Wayne claims to be the best rap artist ever…it’s just pathetic. Even more pathetic is that RS advocates it. When talking about selling, Lil Wayne, like Britney or N’sync, has banked. But when we’re talking about true musical/lyrical talent, Lil Wayne is for the birds….just like Britney and N’sync.

Poopybutt | 4/1/2009, 12:31 pm EST

I just don’t see why people like him and call him such a great rapper it’s common at best to hear real rap listen to some thymesayers entertainment with Brother Ali, Atmosphere, P.O.S or any mpls based rap for that matter it blows Little Wayne out of the water

Nick. | 4/1/2009, 12:39 pm EST

God forbid he steps into the Rock business in my opinion…

kaprano | 4/1/2009, 12:42 pm EST

you cant reely take this guy s seriously rap and rock should mix for no reason whatsoever

hi haters | 4/1/2009, 12:43 pm EST

sell 1 million albums then well talk OK balck cant rock white cant jump => B.S. do wat u got to do

WOW | 4/1/2009, 12:54 pm EST

IS it me or all the hateful comments related to him being black and a rocker? white people, its 2009 goddamit..

exc1t3r | 4/1/2009, 12:55 pm EST

HE`S NOT THE GREATEST RAPPER. HIS “ROCK” MUSIC IS BORING. HE`S NOT A GEIOUS. HE`S NOT A ROCK STAR. HE`S NOT THE GREATEST RAPPER. AUTO-TUNE SELLS RECORDS? WHAT?!? SURE, KANYE DID IT, BUT THE SONGS WERE SO POP AND SELF-CONSCIOUS [LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT KANYE] THAT IT WOKED. LIL`WAYNE IS JUST ANNOYING.

re..hi haters | 4/1/2009, 12:57 pm EST

he could sell 10billion records for all i care. you obviously have no care for the “artistry” of music. its not about the money to us. just to the jackass making it!

JoJo | 4/1/2009, 1:00 pm EST

Garbage…..this is whats wrong with music today…freakin garbage….ugly too.

you've got to be kidding | 4/1/2009, 1:00 pm EST

Remember when Rolling Stone was relevant? I guess there’s more $ in the 12 – 15 year old market.

Harry | 4/1/2009, 1:02 pm EST

Everybody sounds the same. That is why he so popular because he is different than everybody else and that is why he will keep selling records. And that is why he is on the cover of Rolling Stone. He will hit “A Milli” records sold again. Don’t knock the man for trying something different, Rock, an art form created by African Americans.

wait for the 5 stars | 4/1/2009, 1:04 pm EST

they are doing the same thing that they did with the latest crapy u2 record. with stupid arguments they are trying to make us think that this shit is good

the 5 stars are coming for this crap

lame

TheGreatBoges | 4/1/2009, 1:08 pm EST

Why is no one excited for this? It’s either going to suck and we can laugh at him. Or, it will be unlike anything we’ve heard before and not that bad. The chance of having staying power is so slim regardless. I admire his will to try something that is real. No looping drum beats, etc.

jon gutner | 4/1/2009, 1:09 pm EST

There was a time when auto tune was something you didn’t make all that obvious on the record, and when people called you out on it was embarrasing.

LOL, auto tune.

creator of rock n roll??? | 4/1/2009, 1:09 pm EST

exc1t3r | 4/1/2009, 1:10 pm EST

Seriously! Lil Wayne on the front cover for his rock album!? WTF
Some of my respect for Rolling Stones just went down. Lil Wayne is garbage.

does the album come with a paper bag to throw up in?

for the sake of rock and roll, lets pray that he gets busted with a gun and a ton of drugs so he goes away for a loong time.

stick to rap you self absorbed auto tuning doucher.

Anonymous | 4/1/2009, 2:13 pm EST

Fuck lil wayne, the only thing you need to be a succesful rapper is baggy pants and a history of living in a fucked up neighborhood. fuck lil wayne he blows

We'll I'll B | 4/1/2009, 2:25 pm EST

I never liked little Wayne as rapper, I personally think he sucks as a rapper. However I heard his prom queen the other day and really like it. Evolution is a good thing. There seems to be alot of angry Caucasus natives about this. Why? It’s not like Caucasus natives own Rock music! Like with everything Afrikans create and Caucasus take credit.

LilWayneOverRatedBySoFar | 4/1/2009, 2:27 pm EST

It wont be rock, Just like he does not do rap..

M.A.M. | 4/1/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Its the 21st centuary, blk ppl stopped gittin hung a longgggggg time ago! Wow. Obviously yur not very optimistic about anything. ANYBODY WITH TRUE RESPECT FOR MUSIC WOULD ACTUALLY LISTEN TO SOMETHING B4 THEY TALKED ABOUT IT. The album hasnt even dropped and yur already making comments about this multi-million dollar making rapper soon to make yu stand corrected. Watch all the people who are in the rock buisness already git on Wayne’s tracks, yur gon be lookin real dumb then. R&B, Rap, Rock and other music genres already ask for him on their tracks. & he gets on em too. This will only make him bigger not bring him down. & i cant believe yu dont even kno who he is…YU AINT EVEN GOTTA LIKE RAP TO KNO WHO HE IS. Lien a** ppl. Nd he already is the best, no attempts needed sweetie. Anyone can see he works hard for what he wants, maybe ya’ll are mad cuz yu dont do the same. & MAYBE he can pay yu to shut up, cuzz i’m sure that’d make everyone happy. Uhm, and about him changin his vocals, he can do it if he wants, he pays for it, SO he gets it. He’s made many MANY songs where he didnt mess with his voice, & guess what? They were ALL GREAT.

& JUSS CUZZ SOMEONE ACCOMPLISHES SOMETHING WITHIN A YEAR *DOES* *NOT* *MEAN* THAT THEY SHOULD BE ON THE COVER OF ROLLING STONE. Wayne does good every year.

So big “LOL” if ya’ll think he shouldnt. But yeh, i could go on forever.

Dude Man | 4/1/2009, 2:41 pm EST

Great another talentess rapper who claims he can play rock music. News flash to the writers in this magizine and rest of the world, this isn’t rock nrock. This is still the same auto tune, bubblegum, rap, garbage that critics eat up and call it “historic”. Chuck Berry is not dead, but if he was he would be rolling in his grave. Lil(notice how he can not even spell little) Wayne, or as I call him a moronic pot head, stop claiming this is a rock album. And stop the sampling.

Anonymous | 4/1/2009, 2:49 pm EST

Rock. Is. Dead.

dude | 4/1/2009, 3:09 pm EST

money money money….thats always the excuse. i dont know how many times ive heard you idiots say ‘yall just jealous cuz he makes all that money’ or something based on those terms. thats what i cant stand about rap. all you guys talk about is money and you make it very clear on ur cheesy repetitive music videos. if bands like radiohead or nine inch nails wernt getting paid the money they do they would still be out makin records and goin on tour. do u think if lil wayne or kanye west or any other rapper wasnt gettin paid the money they do they would still be makin records and tourin?! FUCK NO!! there #1 motive is $$$$$. you call that a true genuine artist who is actually passionate about music?! its not real. there all part of a big marketing plan. i’d like to see every artist of any genre get a 50% pay cut. the ones that stick around would be the real ones. and the ones that walk…well i think thats self explanatory.

Lil Wayne | 4/1/2009, 3:17 pm EST

Its Sad To Know That Half The People Who Negatively Responded Are White And Your Simple Mad To See And Unfamilar Black Face Upon Your White A’ss Cover. People Who’s Face Are Choosen To Appear On The Cover Of Magizens Are Based Upon The Fact That There At The Top Of There Game Or Getting There. See What You Fail To Realize Is Wayne Has Conqured The The Rap Game And He Is Ready To Conqore The Rock Game. You Cant Be Mad Because Im Sure He Had Half Your Girl Friends Bobbing There Heads In Your Lap To “Lollipop”. And Now Hes Going To Have Your Daughters Getting Fck’ed A Prom To Prom Queen.
Basicly Theres Noting You Computer Geeks Can Do About The Fact That Yet There Is Another Succsessful Black Artist That Somkes Weed,And Drinks And Is Filthy Rich Has 100′S Of Tattoes,Has Pircings And Grill And Is Fresh As Hell,And Is Now About To Still The Face Of Rock. Man Dont You Just Love Him. ROCK ON!

anka | 4/1/2009, 3:38 pm EST

there is something very sexy about lil’ wayne! he’s so hot!! wow

Settle Down | 4/1/2009, 3:42 pm EST

i love how you people attack the man by calling him ugly. All you old people out there think different is ugly. All the old white republicans will never change. Accept it. Rolling Stone has always been known to cover what is popular and right now he is whether you like it or not. I know quite a few kids my age who really don’t give a shit about U2 or AC/DC. While I am not taking anything away from either group, because obviously they are both ridiculously gifted musical groups, some people do not really care about them anymore but they do not attack bono’s looks. You can say what you want about the man’s music, but it is definitely unfair to question his character, when none of you even have any clue what he is really like and the fact he is one of the smartest men in the music industry. He sold millions of copies of Tha Carter III and what now, he has people all in a frenzy creating free publicity for him. He knows people will tune in to see what he is doing. He is a genius. Greatest rapper alive? That may be pushing it, but he sure knows how to get people out and buying his stuff. Before you go too hard, think about what you are really saying.

disbot 3000 | 4/1/2009, 4:13 pm EST

Give the guy some credit: It may completely suck (the autotuning alone is pretty bad in the one track I heard), but at least the guy is willing to put his reputation on the line to try something completely different from what he’s known for. It takes guts to do that in such a public way. Nice try, if nothing else.

BJay | 4/1/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Lil’ Wayne just needs to retire…NOW! It would definitely be a relief for society.

lil' who???? | 4/1/2009, 4:33 pm EST

If you want to listen to awesome “rock” music played by people of color who were true pioneers and never got the respect or fame they deserved, don’t bother with this shit, listen to Bad Brains.Stuff like this is a slap in the face to them.emulation is the highest form of praise but lil’ whatever his name is apparently mistakes fame and wealth with talent.this is just further proof of the dumbing down of music and society in general. It isn’t a race thing..it is a talent thing..

i don't know | 4/1/2009, 4:40 pm EST

I hated his rap….couldn’t fuckin stand him at all. Then I heard his song Prom Queen and I liked that so maybe me might be ok at this rock music…..we see…not making any promises.

Think about it.A rapper trying to make a rock album cant be OK or alright. This has to be either a Hit or a Miss.

But anyway, you have to give him credit because since when did you have the opportunity to see a rapper become a rock star? So just give him a shot

Seth | 4/1/2009, 5:27 pm EST

rock? | 4/1/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Well considering the rock scene has been pretty much dead lately (no new and GOOD artists since Gallows really…just look at the Reading & Warped Tour line up..all old artists) it could be interesting to see how its received.
Apart from Jay-Z rappin over Linkin park, rock and rap hasn’t really mixed..
maybe it’ll increase tolerance of each genre of music by the people that dont listen to them much.
Maybe one day goths wont get killed cos of the music they listen to…

rock? | 4/1/2009, 5:45 pm EST

Just like the person below..
-_-

Why do we all HAVE to listen to ONE sort of music?
Its just limiting yourself.
Which is dumb if you are genuinely interested in music.

WWB FAN | 4/1/2009, 5:46 pm EST

Not to knock lil’ Wayne because I believe he’ll do a fine job, BUT it’s not like this is the first time for someone to go from Rap to Rock or Rock to Rap. If you don’t believe me check out Whole Wheat Bread who have been busting out Punk Rawk Rap for a while and were even on lil’ Jon’s last CD. I know a lot of people don’t believe black people can play “rock” music but there have been plenty!

thedetoxg | 4/1/2009, 5:46 pm EST

yea lil wayne was goin to release the album on may 19, but moved it ahead because of EMINEM relapse sooo lil wayne bugged out cuz he know he aint shit compared to em. nuff said

WeeMan | 4/1/2009, 5:51 pm EST

I hate lil Wayne he has no talent as a rapper and as a lyricist come on… but what i’m worried about is not a race issue but if he can pull it off… will he be the greatest alive ? no because just because a rapper quits doesn’t mean he is dead. Big L, Big Pun, Pac, and Biggie. they’re dead not Rakim, Kane, KRS, or Hov.

I hope Rebirth sucks because then people will stop dick riding

thedetoxg | 4/1/2009, 5:53 pm EST

lil wayne was goin to releas the album on may 19 but moved it ahead becuase of EMINEM relapse album… so lil wayne is scared of the king cuz the best rapper alive is eminem. aint no race issue just the truth.

Come on RS Lil wayne is putting on such a big act and his album will flop and ROCK SHOULD BE LEFT TO THOSE WHO REALLY KNOW HOW TO DO IT not those(wayne) who chooses to do it because its the only way he can make a profit! I hope some way this issue dosnt come in the mail!

Greg | 4/1/2009, 7:50 pm EST

Wow, lots of anger here. Must be the economy. Don’t know a lot about this lil’ wayne, but he doesn’t elicit any white racist rage in me. There was a comment above about black guitarists. Very astute. I’ve seen some of those guitarists perform live. Great stuff. I also think “Blinded By The Light” was a great early prototype of rap. Who did that song? Oh yeah, a white guy named Bruce Springsteen. I think Stevie Ray could play blues, and I think Little Richard rocked. Music, like life, is pretty fucking simple. If you don’t like it, go elsewhere and find something you do like. No need for the hate machine though, pretty or otherwise (Cheesy NIN reference).

Enjoy the music you enjoy.

Cheers

Thhhhh | 4/1/2009, 7:59 pm EST

From what I’ve seen of his guitar playing, i could cut him even by only using my thumb. He’s horrible, and if he really is putting on Avril Levine and Pete Wentz on that shit…..ohh dear…the Apocolypse must be coming three years early.

lil wayne needs a profit? wtf what about all the money they have?

Doctor | 4/1/2009, 8:25 pm EST

lil waynes CD was not push back because of Eminem. It was push back because the record company is scared to have his cd being a flop and actually ruin his career.

Eminem and wayne don’t have the same fans. The average person doesn’t buy more than 5cd’s a year. Thanx to the power of the internet and their scheme ways to catch a buss and reaction. they now know if it’s worth releasing it or not.

Eather way that cd will be release and morons of course will check it out since they are so damn curious.

For everyone else stop being racist.

thhhhhhhhh | 4/1/2009, 8:30 pm EST

Thhhhhhhhhhhh What the hell are you talking about? Rock is black music. We created and white people pushed blacks out of the industry and took over. But at the end of the day. No matter how many talentless whites make their “rock” music. It will AlWAYS be black.

white people are furious!!!…I can tell most of you just started listeni to Wayne. Wayne is not garbage. Far from it. There is a reason he is getting all this attention. He is the harder worker in music and has constantly put out great music. Some of you say he suck, just because you think its cool. Its not. You just sound ignorant. Wayne is doing this album to have fun and reach out to different fans. His whole 15 year career has revolved around hip-hop, why not try something else. Yall are so simple minded. Wayne is musically evolving, and is not stopping his evolution. Also, it should be noted that this isnt a full blown rock album. Its an alternate album. Just alot of different music.

Lill Wayne lovers F U | 4/1/2009, 11:07 pm EST

It always amazes me how this guy has made it to such a high point in such an illustrious industry. Hip-Hip/Rap taste has diminished obiosuly deminished…

There is nothing original in his music. His lyrics arent creative, his beats are generic. and overkills Pop Culture. For him to be even concidered for a grammy is a joke in its self, but to win best Rap is an absolute joke. Lupe Fiasco, Nas and even snoop dogg would be, and should be kicking them selves.

Lill wayne is a step back for hip-hop. He has nothing new to offer. I Cant wait till he becomes yesterdays trash WOOO

Anonymous | 4/1/2009, 11:43 pm EST

yeah fuck whites is right, rock came from blues and the best individual rocker, Jimi Hendrix was black, so really almost all music is from black people

Anonymous | 4/1/2009, 11:45 pm EST

ill listen to a couple of the songs lil wayne will write to see if they are any good, i dont know how u go from rap to rock in just one album

sloppy | 4/2/2009, 12:01 am EST

Lil Wayne is a complete joke to both the rap and rock industry. He has no skill what so ever. He mumbled meaningless lyrics in the carter 3 and he used ghost writers for his other albums. And the stuff he’s releasing now is complete garbage. I cant believe people listen to this s**t. For rap ill stick with Tupac, biggie, eminem, immortal technique, nas, atmosphere, jedi mind tricks, etc. Every rock band is pretty much more creative than lil wayne thats a fact.

Clarity | 4/2/2009, 12:09 am EST

I find it hilarious when white people claim rock music, clueless to the fact that it derived from the blues and was create by blacks. This is fact, common knowledge. Those are the same people that over Elvis’ originality and creativity, not knowing that he stole everything he did. I guess history does repeat itself. And that isn’t a racist statement, it’s a fact.

johnny | 4/2/2009, 12:12 am EST

HAHA, rap genius. it’s hilarious how this douche bag can’t rhyme at all. he rhymes 2 words that most the time are completely unrelated, then moves to the next 2 rhyming words that are also unrelated, creating a complete incoherent mess. not to mention his bullshit beats that sounds like an 8 year old put together loops in garagaband without taking any music theory, much less any common sense into account. his songs are not songs, just self indulgent fragments from the “great genius mind” of an untalented narcissist.’

why the fuck can’t rolling stone cover rappers who actually work hard on perfecting the art? rappers who truly know and respect hip hop. I can guarantee that no matter how well received this album is going to be, Limp Bizkit’s worse will be better. And I would never say that about anyone. ever. period.

Hannah | 4/2/2009, 12:53 am EST

If you think only white people can rock, you obviously do not know very music about rock history.
I guess you also think only white people can be on the cover of Rolling Stone?

And if you’re canceling your subscription because RS has sold out, why do you even have a subscription? The girls from the Hills were on the cover last year, Zac Efron was on the cover 2 years ago and Backstreet Boys/NSync have had multiple covers.

I don’t like Lil Wayne though, I’ll skip the cover story.

dumbasses | 4/2/2009, 12:57 am EST

why is there a need to be talking about black this and white that? music is music. rock and roll was an evolution that occurred over many types of genres fused together.
If i had to pick, i’d say blacks were the pioneers of rock n roll. And rap? Bob Dylan’s “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” are the first machine-gun-fire lyrics I ever heard. And the Beastie Boys definitely helped put rap into the mainstream. Run DMC and Aerosmith… We’re all in on this music thing together people! Wasn’t Jimi inspired by Dylan? Wasn’t Led Zeppelin inspired by traditional folk songs? Shit…Nirvana’s favorite performer was Leadbelly!

LET’S ALL BE AMERICANS TOGETHER!

I don’t like Lil Wayne…but shit, RS hasn’t been putting on deserving bands/artists for a while now….who cares!

Jada Pinket Smith Rocks Harder | 4/2/2009, 2:12 am EST

…than Lil Wayne. Yeah, that is completely true. Wicked Wisdom. Check it…Although its not that “groundbreaking”, IT’S ACTUAL ROCK. NOT THIS THROWAWAY CLUB MUSIC…

If you constantly tell fans of your music that you are the best, they will jump on the bandwagon. Case in point: Lil Wayne. Just because he says it in every song DOES NOT make it true. Wake up people…Unless I missed the story, KRS ONE is still alive and kickin’. Just to name one hip hop artist that improved the game and was far better than Lil Wayne….man, even the ENTIRE Wu-Tang Clan is more talented, entertaining and intelligent than “Weezy”. So for him to claim to be the best at RAP…his own medium…is false and just absurd. Call it Confidence, but that is just ignorant and a slap in the face to any artist before him. Yeah, yeah , yeah he had this many mixtapes in one year…the point is….in one sentence – QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. Why do you think he put out mixtapes and not studio albums…No label in their right mind would put there name on an album that is ¾ filled with bull shit and repetitive nonsense.

Now, Lil Wayne says he wants to be the best. PERIOD?!? Please, all you care about it is money and you still havent caught up to Jay, Puff or 50. Curtis Jackson probably made more off that one VITAMIN Water deal than weezy did all of last year…

If white men cant jump, then black men cant rock?! That’s a terrible conditional statement that I read below…and for this whole argument to ever go to race is ridiculous. Who cares who started the genre…BLACK PEOPLE – White people aren’t trying to steal something from you….and for anyone to pop off about that in incoherent sentences on a website, are not helping your argument. In fact, most of those comments are a step back for your race…and WHITE PEOPLE, wake up and pull your head out of your sisters tits, There are plenty of black ROCKERS out there – LaJohn from Sevendust, Vext from Snot, Benji Webbe from Skindred, lead singer from Oceano …oh and the dude from God Forbid, BAD ASS vocals. What about Lenny Kravitz, the lead singer from Killswitch Engage…the list could go on of CURRENT black rockers….but, I digress. Imo, THIS HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE.

The people who get angry over this issue are real rock fans and are actually TRUE. Yes, I know its shocking. They don’t follow fads, they will tell you when something is dumb, ugly, and/or bad, EVEN IF YOU DON’T AGREE. THAT IS ROCK.

…and to all the blind followers that are chanting “best rapper alive”…how do you even prove such an asinine statement? Record Sales? Hardly. Magazine Covers? Hardly. Money? Hardly. Please for everyones sake, including your own, open your eyes and form your own opinion. Or just keep following…and if you do, I hope for MY SAKE you will soon jump on the bandwagon/fad that suicide is the cool thing to do.

If you would like to see a real guitarist at work Go to Youtube and search Zakk Wylde, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Dimebag Darrell, George Thorogood, or Ted Nugent…that’s how you rock, dude! No autotune, no synthesizter. Straight up bad ass riffs. Watch and Learn. Then watch Lil Wayne standing in his video with a guitar. Notice the difference. That’s the little thing spelled T A L E N T. It gets highly over looked these days.

C’mon Rolling Stone, REALLY?!?

FUCK ROLLING STONE | 4/2/2009, 3:49 am EST

I’m so fucking sick of Rolling Stone…from Britney to Fall Out Boy to The Hills to Gossip Girl to LIL WAYNE TRYING TO ACT LIKE HE IS ROCK AND ROLL…I canceled my subscription of nearly 5 years because I’m sick of this shit. Put REAL BANDS on the cover instead of bullshit artists and lame-ass television shows.

Have any of you seen Lil Wayne play the guitar? I have…it’s TERRIBLE. He’s a fucking clown and so are any of you that buy into this garbage.

God I hate this magazine so much.

FUCK ROLLING STONE | 4/2/2009, 3:52 am EST

music just died this morning.. | 4/2/2009, 10:39 am EST

Why? In my opinion, Lil’ Wayne not only produces the worst “Hip-Hop” music I’ve ever heard in my life, but he also produces the worst rock music I’ve ever heard in my life. Sorry “Weezy” I’m not a fan.

comehomenow | 4/2/2009, 10:59 am EST

Yes, don’t talk about Bush because anything he did wrong is going to be forgotten and forgiven. God Bless America.

breall | 4/2/2009, 11:02 am EST

I don’t care that he’s black, I’m black but I’m surely much deeper into rock than any genre.

I don’t care that he’s a rapper, because music is cyclical and it may be time for rap ‘n rock to return (u know, the music you all loved at the turn of the millennium that no one confesses to liking anymore.

What I really don’t dig is how disingenuous this whole thing seems: I can’t remember lil wayne confessing his love for rock before this moment. And the perception is that this is all a money grab, which makes it reality until he proves his devotion to this project.

The other thing I ain’t diggin is all the Wayne heads proclaiming the greatness of lil wayne as the greatest rapper in it. Dude is not the best, he sells the best, he’s the most profitable. There are tons of better rappers (I’d take lil brother even without dj 9th wonder over lil wayne.)

The final thing is that there are much more deserving artists doing much more comendable things right now. Kings of Leon may have released an album that will signal their rise to true icon status; All That Remains’ “Overcome” is the best metal album I’ve heard since Shadow Fall’s “The War Within.” And Enter Shikari is leading the digital revolution reaching untold success through mainly promoting through myspace.

But I do sense an amount of racial heat here that is unnecessary. Pick whatever band made of white musicians you want to that you think started rock, and they will tell you they emulated and improvised from black blues bands.

YOU PEOPLE ARE MORONS | 4/2/2009, 11:36 am EST

NOW I CAN SEE HOW THEY SAY OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS FAILING AMERICA, DO ANY OF YOU IDIOTS KNOW HOW TO SPELL? WHEN YOU TRY AND MAKE A POINT, AT LEAST SPELL CORRECTLY. HOW IN THE HELL WILL ANYBODY TAKE YOUR ARGUMENT SERIOUSLY IF YOU CAN NOT EVEN FUCKING SPELL? IT IS QUITE SAD…
AND LIL WAYNE IS A JOKE, A PILE OF CRAP WAITING TO BE FLUSHED FROM MUSIC FOR GOOD

ITS NOT about race | 4/2/2009, 11:39 am EST

this is not about race, it is about the fact that lil wayne sells, music is a business, it does not revolve around talent.
lil wayne will hopefully go away soon, because the dude is a pole smoking poser

Anonymous | 4/2/2009, 11:50 am EST

I’ve been a lil wayne fan since I was 13. I’m almost 24 now. I’ve also been a rock fan since 13, when I embraced different cultures and people outside of the hood. Sounds like you all need to open your mind a lil or at least quit hating on an artist who actually loves what he does and never takes it for granted. Secondly, the fact so many are hating is proof of his popularity and stardom. and people have been baggin on RS since its inception. Get over yourselves.

you can't hate music. | 4/2/2009, 12:51 pm EST

if anyone really know what they are talking about in music you can’t really ever say its bad. You can say to don’t like it, but not that it is bad. I respect lil wayne. I don’t love his music, but i respect it. And music is a buisness, yes, but if someone is going to go into that buisness just to make buisness, his music is not going to be that great. It might be, but it is highly unlikely. So to you lil wayne I say good job and keep making music however you want to.

ya!!!!!!!!111111 | 4/2/2009, 12:54 pm EST

I feel that Wayne is the hottest rapper out…he’s also my favorite rapper although i know lyrically he’s not one of the greatest ,but I feel like everyone knows at least one lil wayne song even people who don’t like rap and every song that comes out from wayne gets alot of hype….i think this rock album will be hot!!! although he’s not that great at the guitar ,but it’s all about business ,so if he makes this rock album he knows he’ll at least sell platinum cuz after all he is lil wayne

SuthurnSunshine23 | 4/2/2009, 1:02 pm EST

First, and foremost I was not a ‘Weezy F. Baby’ fan when he first hit the sceen. Secondly, I think that is is SOOO SAD that people are actually playing the ‘RACE’ card in regards to Rock or Rolling Stone… Love for anything, whether it’s music or food, is blind… Regardless of what color a person is…. You mean to tell me that after A multi-racial figure becomes ‘President’ that some things still have a ‘RACE TAG’ on them? People can do WHATEVER their heart desires & accomplishes regardless of who the pioneers or the usuals are!
So, for all of you who are saying that Lil’Wayne sucks, is over-rated, or (what ‘ruffled my feathers’) is that rap is terrible or is ‘crap’; try keeping your mouths closed on things that you have no clue about rather than speaking negatively about it. No one has said that ‘Rock’ is the smelly ‘crotch’ of music… (Which I think not, but I want to make my point)& the comments that said something about Lil’Wayne being sub-retarded & the mag smelling like ‘homegrown’; take a look at the former or current lives of the world’s beloved rock stars, who I will not name, admittingly told the world of their cocaine, heroin, acid use? WHAT ABOUT THAT?! It may not be yoga but, DON’T chastice this man for trying to keep his sanity is some shape form or fashion, by taking advantage of what is was already on this earth before we got here; which doesn’t include cyanide like those beloved cig’s some of you smoke. Try looking in Webster & looking up DIVERSITY/CHANGE….
I’m a very rounded & eclectic person when it comes to music; whether it’s Christina A., Al Green, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Ozzy Ozbourne, or Jason Miraz, I like it all & know what they sound like & who they appeal to…
How dare someone disses Jimi Hendrix when he was a Rock pioneer? How would you feel is someone said The Beatles or Marilyn Manson sucks eggs? (Let me clear that I love both artists)
But, if it’s something that doesn’t appeal to me, I do NOT shoot out crazy remarks or piss people off by displaying my ‘ignorance’ & speaking on things that I can’t relate to…. Some of you immature people should do the same & embrase the FACT that someone who is in the ‘rap game’ isn’t just onesided & bias as some people would ‘judge’…

black or white, he blows... | 4/2/2009, 2:00 pm EST

The fact that he’s a no-talent, gold-digging hack has nothing to do with the color of his skin, so just stop playing the race card. If an artist is good, they’re good. If they suck, they suck. Lil Wayne sucks…2PAC was the last hip hop artist with integrity and something socially important to say.

what a joke | 4/2/2009, 2:03 pm EST

i love how all the afro americans on here are claiming blacks invented rock n roll. yes they had a hand in it but they didnt invent it.
LOOK AT HOW YOUR MUSIC HAS PROGRESSED SINCE THEN!!!! ITS GOING IN REVERSE!!!!!! FROM BRILLIANT MUSICIANS TO RAPPING AND MUSIC SAMPLING MORONS. GET SOME ORIGINALITY…

wellidoloveit | 4/2/2009, 2:34 pm EST

WHAT THE FUCK! RAP GENIUS!!!!!?????

Ohmygood, thats flipping ridonkulous, no way. And we’re not saying that because of his race, we’re saying it because his music is SHIT.

wellidoloveit | 4/2/2009, 2:36 pm EST

whoever thinks he’s good needs to losten to some serious music, and its not about race, he is just AWFUL

Bunny | 4/2/2009, 2:50 pm EST

I don’t see how this question of whether or not Lil Wayne can rock comes down to race. It’s about absurdity…this would be like saying “Dave Grohl wants to rap” most likely everyone would have something negative to say about that because it would be absurd! Do people really like genre crossovers?

really? | 4/2/2009, 3:01 pm EST

lil wayne has raw talent. as a rapper. the new music he makes isn’t rock, it’s pop. auto tuned grumbling isn’t rock wayne… it’s garbage. rest in peace weezy.

Jesus. People are so ignorant. Yes, Rock and Rolls sound did come has origins in blues, which was played by black people. It also came from country, or rockabilly, which was from predominately white people. But it freakin music. Just because Robert Johnson was black and had a huge hand in shaping rock and roll does not mean all black people have some sort of inherit right to rock music. Music is progression, and new music always comes from old. You dont have to be white to create new music from other white music, nor do you have to be black to take music from black people. Yes, Jimi Hendrix was a great musician, as was elvis presley, but just because jimi is black, does not mean he didn’t “steal” blues music and elvis did because his is white. Neither of them created that music, they took what was there and expanded it. That is what a great musician does, black or white. Also, Lil Wayne can make whatever music he wants. You may not like it, but credit him for constantly challenging himself to grow as a musician. He could make a hip hop album every few years and be rich as hell, but instead he is always in the studio, making mixtapes and now even trying to expand his music. He is no music theory major, he could not write a symphony. He does make art though, whether or not you like the art form, don’t say he sucks because the sound is not appealing to you. He is damn good at what he does, and now he is trying something else.

crusty | 4/2/2009, 3:14 pm EST

It’s sad that we are even discussing shit like this on rolling stone.

music is not an art anymore, it’s a scam.

Shakespeare | 4/2/2009, 4:38 pm EST

Rollingstone I used to look forward to reading your magazine when it hit shelfs, I even subscribed to it a year ago! But putting that no talented hip-hop hobit on the cover is a shame, it lowers your standards and cred as a magazine. Who says this dude is the best rapper alive, himself? Not everyone else that is for sure! The best rappers alive today are Jay-Z & Eminem! Why do you think Kanye West albums arent saling like they used to, because he went around saying he is the best, just like this hobit here! I hope that you place in your article that his flop of an album is coming out the same day Eminems Relapse does! Cause when he comes back it is over for this dude and everyone else in the game! Your magazine shits turds when Tha Carter 3 sales 3 million copies calling it a blockbuster LOL When eminem arrives in the next month and movies 1-2 million his first week, and sales 6 to 7 million your going to be on his cock next! Rollingstone I hope your next magazine to go out a bussiness do to the overwhelming economy!

dude has anyone else seen youtube vids of him “playing guitar”? hes not playing anything. hes picking the high E string on random frets out of key. this is not rock music. this is not rap music. it is just noise. seriously stick with what you know how to do (kind of) and rap

uhh... | 4/2/2009, 5:24 pm EST

rolling stone has always been about pop culture. just cause great music and the mainstream crossed paths at the magazine’s beginning, people think its about integrity or rock’n'roll or some shit. fuck that. its about pop culture. keith richards and kurt cobain built their legends on 3 chords. don’t fool yrself. 3 chords, 3 buttons on a sampler, lyrics about sex and drugs. nothing has changed except yr level of openmindedness.

ILovePitBulls | 4/2/2009, 7:36 pm EST

Lil Wayne has worked his ass off since he was a kid to get where he is today. He has the money, the women and the fame. I doubt any of you haters have accomplished anything that can beat that. I suppose it’s easier to sit around talking shit about somebody else than it is to work on yourselves. Jealousy is ugly! If he wants to do rock music so be it. I am a fan of his rap music, especially his older stuff. I am open minded enough to check out the rock album when it comes out. If I don’t like it I won’t listen to it.

Big Kudos to Weezy F F F Baby for making it so far!!!

what has happened to rap? | 4/2/2009, 7:45 pm EST

tim911 | 4/2/2009, 9:02 pm EST

look theres alot of ppl sittin there sayin that rollingstone is bs for writing a story about this guy but look at all the comments its received. This guy is gold he is interesting and controversial. Some may say hes not talented, but he makes good music that everyone listens to. He also lives one of the craziest lives ever up there with the old school rockers like hendrix, richards, and all the greatest rockers. I hope wayne is successful wit this album and even if he isnt who cares, hes already a legend wit what hes done and how he lives

Justin | 4/2/2009, 10:03 pm EST

I got a taste of Lil Wayne when he showed up 40 minutes late to the Virgin Fest (MD) last year and sucked it up on stage by hyping over his PRE-RECORDED music . . . it was garbage . . . Hip Hop is dead . . . today’s “music” is hardly that

notweezy | 4/2/2009, 10:06 pm EST

Its true he is not classically trained in music, But he is marketable. He got a break early and he,s workin it. I couldnt find the song where he says “cash money filled my cup and now….” but as far as being passed around like a joint. He doesnt go overboard in his lyrics but its clear that he has enough sense to manage in that type of situation.

Rap Genius | 4/2/2009, 10:07 pm EST

That Guy is talented!!

Keep doing your thing weezy, let haters hate, You are at the top of the game. “more money, more problems.” seems like a lot of people use biggie quotes.

Good looking out on the cover Rolling stone.

1st and last of all…all this is uneccessary…ur lookin at a guy who conquerored his primary game and says hey mayb i can try this to just a guy who generally is in love wit music and ur mad at that?cuz he doesnt set himself in one category…all this talkin i bet his rock album sells so many copies its retarded watch….wats wrong wiut rollingstone puttin him on..if it was jimmi everyones eyes wuld b all big and OMG jimmi is one of the best to ever do it but say way and OH JESUS wayne…rap genius ….omg no no not him…calm down give it a chance if he sucks then oh well let him know it and move on but i think this is pure originality and i wuld do the samething

D'KinG | 4/3/2009, 3:36 am EST

wats wrong wit rollingstone doin a interview on sumthin interesting do u know how many ppl actually like him….4get all that pac biggie and jay-z real rap crap wit time things get better and wayne says some over the top stuff man period and as a real musician tryna do wat u feel instead of jus makin a whole buncha dance music this is a prime example a i make music as well and i dnt want to b cofined to rap cuz im black i like a certain sound that incorparates guitars pianos drums and such that can really bring out the natural musician and emotions of sumone on stage and in the crowd…he is not a genius its jus he went somewhere and made up some powerful and tite puchlines now everyone expects him to him to b awesome wen he makes a song..so now that he has built that name in hip hop its time to start gettin down to how he really feels about music this is a natural side and more original side ….jus him coming out of confinement…who sed he is gonna make acid rock and all that at most probably alternative and i doubt he will not suprise some ppl bcuz clearly some of his music he has made with the rock feel has been wat i like the most so BOOM

Woah. Damn. | 4/3/2009, 6:12 am EST

hahahahah that thhhh guy is a rascist. Rock is definately a black thing. Rock spawned from blues, which is what eric clapton and stevie ray play/played….

Both of their favorite guitarists are black.

Eric Clapton: B.B. King
Stevie Ray:Jimi Hendrix.

Ugh... | 4/3/2009, 11:26 am EST

Lil Wayne’s sudden “love” for rock music is just like Jessica Simpson sudden “love” for country music. Until now, Lil Wayne has never talked about how he likes rock music… he’s doing it to make more money and to be “different.” Jessica Simpson sold records, but not like Britney did, so to keep herself on the radar she suddenly becomes a country singer. Same thing with Lil Wayne… He can’t just be satisfied being a popular rap artist, oh no! Now he wants to be a rock star. Lil Wayne, you can be a rock star without having to play rock music! “Rock star” state-of-mind is about being the best you can be at what you’re GOOD at. Stop embarrassing yourself please! Okay, I’m done ranting…

Mike | 4/3/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Why are people getting so mad at Rolling Stone for putting a multi-platinum artist on the cover, the same artist has also been recording for 10 years. Remember when your parents would complain about your music and how bad it is, well, you have now turned into your parents. I’m almost 30, I grew up with Hip-Hop, Grunge Rock, etc, but you better believe I respect all these artists out here right now. You don’t have to love their music, but at least try not to turn into that old fart that hates everything.

THa TRuth | 4/3/2009, 12:32 pm EST

actually he has talked about his love for rock music a lot.
he said his favorite song growing up was Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.

so mister Ugh…. dont talk unless you know what your talking ’bout

He loves rock music because he listened to a song every thirteen year old kid in America has heard at some point in their lives? Whatever.

lil wayne | 4/3/2009, 3:48 pm EST

chek this new flow i made up homies, ‘my names lil wayne, i gotta lil brain, i’ll do anything for fame, even if i have to look lame. i wanna rock, cuz i want you to be shocked, then again i can do that by showing you my little….’

sloppy | 4/3/2009, 4:38 pm EST

Lil Wayne is a complete joke to both the rap and rock industry. He has no skill what so ever. He mumbled meaningless lyrics in the carter 3 and he used ghost writers for his other albums. And the stuff he’s releasing now is complete garbage. I cant believe people listen to this s**t. For rap ill stick with Tupac, biggie, eminem, immortal technique, nas, atmosphere, jedi mind tricks, etc. Every rock band is pretty much more creative than lil wayne thats a fact.

= ) | 4/3/2009, 4:51 pm EST

You people are takeing this way to far. Yes Jimi Hendrix was black and alot of other great rockers. But what were saying is LIL WAYNE ISNT ROCK. Rock died along time ago…. And all he’ll do is make people keep shooting it to make sure its dead. Now were stuck with stupid music… I miss you Jimi,The beatles, The Who, Ac/Dc, Led Zep…. Music has faded since your days of rock

BJB Digital | 4/3/2009, 4:53 pm EST

Why Rolling Stone thought Lil’ Wang’s decision to make himself look like even more of a moron, and vandalize music even more devastatingly then he already has was worthy of their front cover perplexes me. However, considering they gave his garbage “hip-pop” albums glowing reviews it becomes even more obvious they are being run by mentally challenged individuals. So you have to be a little impressed that they allow handicapped people to write their material.

Whenever I hear someone try to argue that Wheezy the weezer is the best rapper around these days they completely lose all credibility to me. Just for an example, the song “phone home” is the absolute worst track I have heard in my life. Not only does he have the vocabulary of a first grader, but Lil’ Wang does not rap, he mumbles. So how is a mumbler going to be able to execute actual harmonious vocals? I already know he is going to be using “auto-tuning”, but that is just lame. Yea Kanye West got away with it, but Wang doesn’t have anything on him. Still, I am really all for him doing this, simply because this has the potential to be career suicide. When the majority of your fans are MTV fiends you are only as good as your last album.

Does anyone else think the photo of him smiling(The second photo down) like a fool is hilarious? His expression is ridiculous, and makes him look like he has down syndrome.

Seriously, He really can’t rhyme and he’s laughing all the way to the bank. I know he’s been on countless mix tapes but that doesn’t mean rollingstone has to endorse him.
Shame on you. “Arguably the Greatest rapper alive”…arguably being the key word.

Randy | 4/3/2009, 7:11 pm EST

I saw Lil Wayne on SNL trying to get something out of the guitar he had as prop, Man that was painful,If this young man wants to sound like his guitar hero’s, I can teach him all the tricks and licks in a month, give him some credibility.

sad girl :[ | 4/4/2009, 3:44 am EST

Lester Bangs was wrong, rock music didn’t die in the 70’s. It just died. it is officially dead. It’s not an issue of ethnicity or how he’s a rap artist. It’s the passion that that created rock has disapered. just listen to what he said “The rock shit just comes from what my life is now”…this rock SHIT? seriosuly? I bet he doesn’t even know how ‘rock’ was created, if you mentioned robert johnson to him, he’d be like “who?” …what about big mama thorton? Buddy holly? alan freed? really, this makes me really sad. I would seriously die to go back and witness the days when music ment something to people. Ben Fong Torres, please come back and de-thrown the editors at rolling stone, they are destroying rolling stone and everything it is about. MUSIC. now, music is just an industry of ‘cool’. where money, girls, and ‘being the best’ is the priority. it’s ok to totally demolish rock and all that is music, as long as its making you rich. thank you for making me realize that there is now no hope for music left, and that i will have to constantly live in the past.

seriously | 4/4/2009, 9:20 am EST

wow, everyone here seems to either hate lil wayne, hate rolling stone or both!
well me in the other hand never liked lil wayne, he’s just like any rapper, same old same old
-BUT-
i do think he is genuine about his love for rock, i also know he has guitar skills, not a hero but he has passion, he’s just like anyone else, i can understand i only used to love rnb and hiphop and soul, now i listen to mostly alternative and indie! not because im sick of hip hop, just cause we all have our moments and we like to broaden our minds (some of us) and see/hear music more like art and get the idea behind it, can’t judge a song or an artist by the first glance or the headline on a magazine.. know who you mess with, have evidence or keep your negative notes to yourself

504 Chris | 4/5/2009, 5:07 am EST

the lable for his rock album last time i heard was still thinking about dropping the album because they didnt think it was gonna sell anything. So knowing that if he was honest when he said he really is into rock music, why would he go on and finish the album?? I personally think wayne is the best rapper out right now. wayne is a poetic genius just thinks hes says are just crazy things no ones even come close too. and i mean so what if he wants to do rock? just because hes a rapper everyone is against him? what if he just talked out his songs like Cash? would it be different just because hes lil wayne? one more thing wayne has been playing guitar for a while now like before carter 2 so i mean even if he just started playing it when carter 2 came out hes still been playing for like what 4 or 5 years now? just don’t hate something because you dont understand it

504 Chris | 4/5/2009, 5:15 am EST

Why dosen’t everyone just wait to cast judgement until its out?? dont hate some thing because you dont understand it. and all the crap about waynes vocals, hes atleast trying to make himself sound better, and even if he took the J.Cash approach and just talked his songs he’d still catch crap because he’s a rapper.if its bad for a rapper to rock, does that means its bad for a rocker to rap? because i would deffinatley put rage against the machine in that category and rage is fucking awesome. so why can’t we just except wayne for the lyrical genius he is and be done with it. rap or rock it has words over some music in the background. and waynes lyrics deffinately are something we’ve never seen, heard, thought, hell even dreamed about

Anonymous | 4/5/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Look, as much as any idiots out there enjoy the stupid dance beats
and horrible lyrics to Lil Wayne’s supposed “music” (i call it crap)
you know he can’t succeed as a rock and roll musician. Don’t let his horrible mainstream influenced style carry on into a genre which he has absolutely no knowledge of. Just because you sold a couple million albums doesn’t mean you can go on and invade other genres with your crap.

liam | 4/5/2009, 10:57 pm EST

you obivously didn’t realise that lollipop was joke

Ungreatful dead | 4/5/2009, 11:32 pm EST

If rock isn’t dead yet, this will do it. I’m curious what ever happened to sheer talent of having to sing on stage or on record this auto tune shit is ridiculous it takes the human experience out of it. Also it creates a whole new level of mass production. He has so many mixtapes because doing what he does is easy he really has no talent with out auto tune he would be a nobody. Same reason why Kanye is falling off. This is the opposite of rock and roll there is no way he can do it because the beastie boys already did it the best and emo sucks so please don’t even try Lil’ Wayne by the way there is a reason why they call him lil’ 8=D

Lil Wayne is doing something many other artists do not do and that’s step out of their normal genre’s characteristics.

Many artists don’t even try to do so because they are scared of the failure…and Lil Wayne on the other hand isn’t.

But if I had to choose between “greatest rapper alive” Kanye West and “rap’s genius” Lil Wayne…I’m going to go with Lil Wayne.

I’m nearly fifty (50) years old & a few years ago I didn’t have any knowledge of rap. Oh how times have changed. I love good music, all music & so with an open mind I listened to my 21 (21) year old sons music & I’ll be damned if there were not some talented musicians/performers in the rap world. I was and continue to be a fan. Lil Wayne simply has it going on. Remember he is “The beast, feed him rappers or feed him beats. Now feed him guitar, bass, drum, he’ll rock the place. Just watch……

woooow | 4/7/2009, 5:08 pm EST

well it sounds like most of you have absolutely no clue what youre talking about or how to spell.
Here is the deal….wayne owns rap at the time being….yes there are other rappers that are legends(jay-z, atmosphere, kanye)….but this dude sells so many albums for a reason. And for the dumbass that said his last mixtape was hard to listen to….dedication 3 is the shiiiiznit so you must have been listening to something else.
As far as wayne’s passion for rock music…im pretty sure no one that commented on this thing is entitled to say whether or not he has loved rock his whole life.
Give the album a chance before you claim how horrible it is.

By the way….the best musicians of all time are almost all dead…..and this rap shit means nothing to me other than something to dance to. I plan on making a time machine and returning to the seventies to listen to real music with meaning, passion, and talent behind it.

lil wayne repersents the new face of hip-hop. hes evolving for a changing market and trying to flex his musical talents.people try to bash him for money making but making music is a JOB and that is pretty much the point of a JOB soo its not like your gonna bash a doctor or a lawyer for trying to make more money. also he is making this music as a service to the public, if you dont like it the amazing thing is no one is forcing you to listen or buy a magazine with him on a cover so dont complain.

lol i see alot of people had theyre daily dose of haterade…Look, Wayne is an artist, a true artist, and i say this because TRUE artists work on how to expand and perfect theyre craft. Wayne had been killin the rap game for some time, but even he knows that nowadays u need to do somethin more than just rap to be recognized as a great artist. Its not the old days anymore where u stay dominant in one genre and be remembered forever. So Wayne is gonna try another genre (pop/rock) which means new crowds, new ears, and of course..NEW MONEY!!. True fans will still follow, but the ones he loses by doing this will almost be undetected due to the vast amount of new fans he will gain. Pay attention and watch, and FYI, Prom Queen and Hot Revolver are actually pretty good tracks, id say a good start.

Brent | 4/9/2009, 10:04 am EST

I think he can do what he wants
all of you posting this shit about him trying to switch to rock dont phase him one bit. Just because he wants to try something new doesnt mean hes gonna forget about rapping. he is prolly the best out there right now in the rap game, so why would he up & leave that? no i see it as him just wanting to set up a new goa to reach cuz hes done acheieved his shit in rap, so he wants to take it to the next level, challenge himself as a musician. theres no rules to being a rockstar/rocker. so do what you do wayne, if it dont work out, you still got rap, & all these ppl need to stop hatin

Lil Truth | 4/9/2009, 5:14 pm EST

Lil Wayne on Rolling Stone? You can’t be serious.

There are real dedicated musicians out there working their asses off to make it, while this little phony is making magazine covers. If you saw his performance on SNL you’d see he has zero skills whatsoever.

Unfortunately some poor starving artists will play in his backing band and polish his shit for peanuts.

Get real Rolling Stone, you’re losing your cred.

anyways, i’m glad to see we have many faithful ppl who don’t want this to ruin what rock is today. but why not let him make an epic fail, wasting away his millions and millions of dollars in the process?

not to discriminate, but the only african rockers i respect r Marley and Living Colour. they understood the genre, and didn’t ruin it.

Lil Wayne is a great rapper. He has major talent! He’s is growing as an ARTIST! Rock & Roll Was started in the south. Muddy Waters, signed with Leonard Chess of Chess Records. Chuck Berry who started the Rock! sound! was also on Chess Records. Who was then blatantly ripped of by the Plagerizing BeachBoys & Elvis.

JerBear | 4/14/2009, 2:32 am EST

Lil Wayne could fart over a beat and people will eat that shit up.

And I totally agree with Lil Truth, Wayne’s probably gonna make millions, while the real musicians holding shit down in the backdrop and making the music sound somewhat tolerable won’t be making shit.

His lyrics are alright, he has some good lines and metaphors, but he CANNOT play guitar for shit and merely strums single notes on the high E string with his fucking THUMB. Dude, doesn’t even use a pick.

He’s basically trying to give off this “rockstar” persona by wearing stereotypical “rocker” gear such as studded guitar straps and chain wallets, and by wearing an electric guitar onstage for show. He doesn’t really play much or contribute anything to the music whatsoever. He also can’t sing for his life, hence the reason his vocals are drowned with autotune on the recordings.

Dude, just stick to rap/hip-hop.

breall | 4/14/2009, 8:46 pm EST

Stop calling this dude the best rapper alive. Please.

He is just an orgasm of image development, constant publicity, solid (bordering on sub-par mic skills), and very slim competition

Makes me sick all these people proclaiming he’s the best because of how many records he sells. Please no more cock-riding; even 2pac had bad songs, but some people treat him like the golden boy.

He’ll get a real test this time around when his and eminem’s records drop on the same date. Eminem, even in his sub-prime state, is going to devour wayne

lil wayne does not deserve to be called a rocker

white girl from a small town | 4/15/2009, 1:08 pm EST

funny how people can judge someone on their career when obviously they have no idea how it is to live like wayne does. i dont see anyone else in this world who strives to be the best no matter what it takes other then this ARTIST,lil wayne.honestly,i dont remember wayne saying he wants to change the way rock sounds in general, maybe he just wants to try the sound out and give his own spin on rock.that is what an artist does, something new and unheard of.art isnt about pleasing everyone in the world, but if his music IS causing such an uproar because for 1, he did call himself out on being the best rapper in the world,2,he will have to live up to that image he protrayed himself as,3, hes not a child, hes not stupid like most people who cant spell four letter words anymore due to a lack of college education and the ability to analyze anything in terms of knowing how and why man do the things that man does, he has enough credit to support his convidence that he wont release a shity album because he knows what sounds good. wayne isnt out to please everyone,he is sticking to his heart, the heart that even now has made him the cocky guy he at least comes off of.but who wouldnt be cocky if they had someone cut their fucking new york steak. it was emerson who said,”to be great is to be misunderstood”.wayne, i think is misunderstood.but who woulnt be misunderstood if their work was unread or unbiased from shallow minded people who are only pissed they are not what wayne is, a new age artist compared to noone else.when will people realize that we cant compare artists of today to those of the past?we should be moving on.why can we not encourage a new artist that is changing the way the world lives and thinks, for wayne is not a modern day michaelangelo,he is lil wayne.an artist,a rapper with soul and passion.he is already changing history with not only his record statistics, but the negative comments he is getting around the globe.the attention in general is attention selected for change.i cant remember the last time i heard shit about lindsey lohan.its about time someone who is worth reading about is getting such great attention.honestly, reading blogs that hate someone for living their dream and pissing people off along the way is a hell of a way to go down in the history books.”he who angers you, controls you”.any opinion in the world cant change the way this inspiring man lives, because he is strong, unlike the majority of B-list artists.that is what makes a person into a badass.whether he is/was/becomes mainstream,he will still have changed people’s lives.if anyone has forgotten, that is why we as awhole world, listen and love music.to have impacts on our lives.

real talk | 4/16/2009, 6:42 pm EST

I liked the article that Mark Binelli did on Lil Wayne for Rolling Stone magazine. Throughout the article Mark talks about how Lil Wayne became such a famous artist in such a short period of time. One of things that I really liked about this article is he gives information about Lil Wayne that I didn’t even know. One of the facts was that Lil Wayne got signed to a record label when he was only 14 years old. Another interesting fact was that Lil Wayne has people to cut hit own steak. I mean who else has people to cut their own steak.
I agree with Mark Binelli when he said that Lil Wayne is a rap genius. Lil Wayne calls himself the best rapper alive and I agree with that. No one in the past 2 years has dominated rap music like Lil Wayne. I think that Lil Wayne going from rap to rock music is a risky move on his part, but if anyone can make that transition its Lil Wayne. I think overall this is a great article and if you haven’t read this article you’re missing out.

lil wayne is the best rapper alive

Hina | 5/12/2009, 10:24 pm EST

okay frankly i love music all types of music…pretty much anything that sound good though my ears… 2 me lil wayne even if he cant play really good and he doesnt have a voice of a god, he still has awesome music. He wants 2 try something new so let him and who knows if he trys really hard, he could probably do a whole 360 but nithing happens over night it takes time and effort and if he serious about it let him go. Dont knock him down just because YOU GUYS DONT HAVE A SINGLE ORIGINAL BONE IN UR BODY. Listen 2 wat he puts out there. He likes doing what he does and likes to think outside of the box
If u dont lyk it
DONT LISTEN 2 HIM!!!
SIMPLE
but dont judge just because u heard him ONLY sing rap, let him expan his artistic side GEEZ

Uhmm All I Gotta Say Is THis Guy Is A Musical Genius And Just Let The Haters Hate On You.. They Are Just Hatinq Because They Cant Make It That Far And Only Thinq That They Can Do Is Talk About What Other People Got And What They Want But Cannot Have .

Good Shit Wayne.

Hash | 5/13/2009, 4:21 pm EST

Little Wayne is a good rapper. But he is not the best not by a long shot. his concepts are not deep enough for me. and his rymes come off as ABCish. Nevertheless, im proud of sonny boy. Thats it, im not a fanatic fan for Wayne, he still has a lot of verbal growth left

rock is the shiz | 5/16/2009, 12:57 pm EST

ok i love emo, screamo, metal, death metal, rock, and all that head banging shit all u people that don’t like rap and r hatin on lil’wayne need to quit critizing him he’s pretty good at rapping and rock

Switchbladesandurethane. | 7/14/2009, 4:22 pm EST

this could work for him, im more into rock than rap tbh but rap with guitars has been proven to work (rage against the machine, beastie boys, limp bizkit). he just neds to lose the rnb side of his music a bit if hes gonna move into rock.

Hope he does well.

PIE | 8/16/2009, 1:00 am EST

guys don’t u realize he iz only doin this tranzition from rap 2 rock so he can do a few rock albums and alot of money from the rock fans and then he’ll go back 2 rapping and every 1 will buy the next rap album he makes and he’ll get even more money

i love weezey he’s 1 of my favorite rappers but this whole tranzition thing is just another scam 2 get even richa

PIE | 8/16/2009, 1:04 am EST

Weezy is the best rapper alive he always will be but i think it would be cool 2 do this rock album as long as he goes back to rap after it
i don’t like rock but if weezy does it it can not be bad

Mux | 8/22/2009, 7:24 pm EST

he just wanna grow… Hip-hop is so poor and small lol :p

DUSTINDUSTRIES | 10/5/2009, 4:42 am EST

Flyer than Beetle Juice Beetle Juice Be-the-Juice.

Wayne got Summer hatin` on him, cause he`s hotter than the Sun. He got Spring hatin` on him, cause he ain`t ever sprung. Winter hatin` on him cause he colder than ya`ll. Wayne won`t ever, Wayne won`t ever, wayne won`t ever fall.

He bein` hated by the seasons, so Fuck ya`ll for hatin` for no reason.

I am over 30, white, not from the U.S. and all my former CD`s ( dead format ) metal rap, rock are now drink coasters. I was in to Metal as a youngster and a bit of rap mix. Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, M.O.D., S.O.D. even Ice.T with BODY COUNT was quite a hard album. How about Rage AgainstTM in the 90`s. Cypress Hill was the turning point for me to get off the Death/Speed/Hard metal.

Lil Wayne is a storm in a D-cup, no denying his presence in the modern day arena. I played the Carter 2 to Death, I think the Carter 3 has it`s merits but at the mo I am playing the Drought 3 and other mix tapes I can find online.

It was cool to see Weezy on letterman top 10 then some other headliners, but The View left? Anyways, Ride the Lightning Wayne.

GIGI | 10/16/2009, 11:21 am EST

yung mny | 11/12/2009, 1:13 pm EST

lil wayne will prolly murder that rock album even tho hes the greatest rapper alive, once he showws that he can do rock to,he will go back to rap, continuing to be the greatest rapper alive, weezy F baby, he is thebest rapper alive.

rock on | 11/15/2009, 4:43 pm EST

ok im oretty sure this album isnt going to be good but Kings of Leon definetly do not deserve the cover more than Lil Wayne or anybody at that

Might be decent | 11/15/2009, 10:31 pm EST

I liked Rage Against the Machine which is rap-rock. Mainly I wish he got someone else to play the guitar parts. If this album is really bad just don’t listen to it.

Seriously | 11/19/2009, 9:01 pm EST

Lil Wayne can do whatever he wants with his music. If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it. He’s either going to be really good, or really bad. A lot of people do like his new music, and that’s all that matters. He is doing something not very many other rappers have done, so shut up and let him do his thing.
