Semi Precious Weapons: On the Road and Out of Control at SXSW

3/31/09, 3:12 pm EST

When Rolling Stone hit Austin’s South By Southwest Music Festival a week ago, we handed Semi Precious Weapons‘ outrageous frontman Justin Tranter a Flipcam and a simple set of directions: film yourself doing what you do before, during and after gigs and hand over the footage. We wound up with two days’ worth of video — 250 different clips featuring the outrageous singer bathing, high-kicking, hanging with Perez Hilton, Juliette Lewis, Sylvain Sylvain and Rachael Ray, baring his nipples, hopping onstage at the Japanese punk showcase, breaking his heel, applying eyeliner, showing off his dance belt and greeting the glam-rock band’s fans. It took days to sift through the footage (and remove the bits that wouldn’t get past the censors), but we’ve finally done it: click above to watch 48 wild hours in the life of Semi Precious Weapons at the music industry’s biggest annual event.

When Rolling Stone first profiled the New York party band in December 2008, Tranter told us, “There’s 10 songs on our record and nine of them are about how fantastic I am.” Their debut album, We Love You, is packed with winkingly cocky lyrics (sample: “I can’t pay my rent but I’m fucking gorgeous”) and raw garage-rock riffs that have won over a diverse audience of admirers (Rachael Ray to Tranter onstage: “I still want those boots, bitch!”). Tranter tells RS that he was recognized on the streets of Austin from his stint on MTV’s Made and an appearance on E!’s Chelsea Lately. We have to assume next year he’ll be hearing about the jacuzzi footage we nabbed last week.

Don’t miss all of Rolling Stone’s SXSW reports — interviews, video and reviews tackling Metallica, Jane’s Addiction, Kanye West, the Decemberists and a boatload of up-and-coming bands. Plus, check the new issue of RS (out this week!) for David Fricke and Caryn Ganz’s wrap-up of the fest’s top five breakout acts.

i’ll vouch… NO BIG ROCK band is eager for SPW to open for them. Who wants to get blown off stage every night by the band supporting you on tour?

Its a tough position, but they’ll pull it off somehow. Best live band ever.

love ya SPW. Whaasssup Cole.

The reek of desperation is just sad. Aging trannies are not avant garde or rock n roll, and neither is vapid fame mongering. Pathetic.

My friend has his Made episode DVRed just to watch the part where he “cries.” I don’t know who this train wreck is, but he’s definitely misinterpreting people who appreciate the humor in his terrible acting as “fans.” Every word that comes out of this guy’s mouth is bullshit. He rants about how “fabulous” he is and you can just see how sad & desperate he is. It’s funny but kind of wrong, too. I almost feel bad for the guy, except he’s so annoying.

holy god that guy is awesome. So fun. So funny. So rockNroll.

Saw them in DC and was not expecting much to be honest. They put on a great show and have that special something that I’m sure will lead to great success.
