Jason Newsted On Leaving Metallica: “I Have Never Looked Back”

Jason Newsted’s 15-year stint playing bass for one of heavy metal’s biggest acts came to an end nine years ago, when he exited Metallica for “private and personal reasons and the physical damage I have done to myself over the years while playing the music that I love.” On April 4th, when Metallica are inducted into Cleveland, Ohio’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Newsted will be there to accept rock’s highest honor, and he’s even agreed to reunite with drummer Lars Ulrich, frontman James Hetfield and guitarist Kirk Hammett (along with current bassist Robert Trujillo) for an impromptu set he promises will include “at least one song about Satan.” (Revisit the band’s career in Metallica: Through the Years in Photos.)

Since splitting the band to form the short-lived Echobrain, Metallica fans have wondered whether Newsted has ever regretted leaving the band. With less than a week to go before the Rock Hall, Newsted tells Rolling Stone the answer is absolutely not.

“I tell you very honestly, 1 billion percent, I have never regretted leaving Metallica,” Newsted says. “It was the right thing for everyone. It was the right thing to do for the camp, that’s it. I’ve never told anyone that I wanted to go back or anything like that, not once. I made up my mind. It was not an easy thing to do, but it was something I had to do. I thought about it very much before I pulled the trigger, and because of that, I have never looked back. The past is where its supposed to be.”

Perhaps that’s why Newsted has yet to see a copy of Guitar Hero: Metallica, a video game that doesn’t even feature him in pixilated glory. According to Newsted, he wasn’t even aware of his absence from the game.

“I haven’t seen it, but it’s a wonderful thing that we were able to do, as long as it’s the music that we played and we recorded that everybody is playing along to or listening to,” he says. “And a new generation is getting turned on to Metallica… all of these are positive things. But I’ve never touched a Guitar Hero. I don’t play video games. I play the real instruments. I don’t waste my time with anything else.”

Newsted, who says he’s recently put the finishing touches on Voivod’s 15th studio offering (it will be the band’s last effort featuring late guitarist Denis “Piggy” D’Amour’s contributions, and is slated for release in June), says Metallica is worthy of the Rock Hall, and says he’s still a fan of his former band.

“I was one of the biggest fan of the band before I went in, and I’m a Metallica fan still,” he says. “I was always the one person in the world who had an inside look and an outside look at the band, at the same time, and now, I’ve been out for a while, and I’m able to be a fan again.”

Does that mean Newsted likes Death Magnetic? “It was better than St. Anger.”

Yeah, Chris Cornell’s new album is better than St. Anger. I miss Newsted being in the band.

5 members in metallica | 3/31/2009, 12:09 pm EST

why not? newstead can do keyboards and cello!

Audience | 3/31/2009, 12:24 pm EST

I miss James’ growl and James’ attitude.
I miss the 80’s……

MB | 3/31/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Newsted was awesome in Metallica but Trujillo is the real deal. I like them both for different reasons but I feel Metallica is beter off with Trujillo.

Anonymous | 3/31/2009, 1:00 pm EST

I agree with Audience, his back up vocals is something that is missing from the last 2 albums. But Rob does rock!

Craigrattlehead | 3/31/2009, 1:28 pm EST

Rob is the better man for the job now but jason in his prime was so powerful on stage headbanging like cliff and his vocals were strong.

NNNikolaj | 3/31/2009, 2:45 pm EST

Yes, Newstead was outstandingly cool. I also like Trujillo from back when in was in ST. But he doesn’t fit into Metallica 1 billion percent. Jason did!

Blackened Earth | 3/31/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Jason is a classy, down to earth guy. I had the honor of jamming with him at his parents house in Michigan and he didn’t have one ounce of ‘rock star’ in his attitude.
He deserves the RRHOF. Cheers J.

frisco | 3/31/2009, 3:30 pm EST

Notice how he doesn’t really answer the question about whether he likes Death Magnetic.
No use waiting for his book either.
He probably traded that away for a few extra million.

Anonymous | 3/31/2009, 3:40 pm EST

I want Jason Back in Metalica

Luis | 3/31/2009, 3:59 pm EST

I met Jason in Mexico City on a authografh firm on mix up store in 1999 He is a really gentleman … Rob is the better man for the job now but jason in his prime was so powerful on stage headbanging like cliff and his vocals were strong

Bacteria13 | 3/31/2009, 4:01 pm EST

VOIVOD!!!

shallowlittlebitch | 3/31/2009, 4:45 pm EST

Guitar Hero, all that shit, is so fucking lame when advertised as introducing THE GODLY MUSIC to the “new” generation. wtf are you people smoking, the new generation has had your shit on replay for 20 fucking years. get a fucking clue

duffmanth | 3/31/2009, 4:52 pm EST

I’ve nothing against Trujillo, but I do wish Newsted was still in the band. I got into Metallica right around when the Black Album came out, and that’s the Metallica I grew up with and wish was still around.

Newstead | 3/31/2009, 4:53 pm EST

DM is better than anything newsteads done since he left

2-Daze | 3/31/2009, 5:04 pm EST

this interview is much much much better than the one from last week.
1 billion percent better, even.
but EchoBrain?
Newsted is STILL a nutless sack of wannabe “balls”.
and a millionaire to boot.

jim | 3/31/2009, 6:15 pm EST

brutal comment about Satan…these guys are total idiots

John | 3/31/2009, 9:10 pm EST

Why would anyone want Jason back in the band? Whats wrong with Rob?: “Death Magnetic” was better than 3 out of the 4 studio albums that they put out with Jason…no contest…They are both great, but Metallica is fine the way it is now..Robs been in the band longer than Cliff at this point..

Alabama Mayun | 3/31/2009, 9:54 pm EST

Dont start being whiny biches for Newstead. If anything, Cliff Burton is the most missed bass player. No one can touch him. Trujillo is good where he is. Newstead served his purpose. But people complaining about Newstead not being in the band anymore need to move on. Burton played on the best material, before they turned mullet rock, and if you can get over Cliff, you can sure as hell get over Newstead. Cliff em all!

DavidNYT | 3/31/2009, 10:06 pm EST

Good get

Ron | 3/31/2009, 10:37 pm EST

I think it’s great that they are honoring a former member. And Justice For All & the Black Album are two of their best albums so he certainly deserves to be there. Congratulations LARS!!

june | 3/31/2009, 11:01 pm EST

I miss Newsted being in the band…he is a GREAT DOWN TO EARTH GUY!

Francisco | 3/31/2009, 11:11 pm EST

Ehh…Jason didn´t add or substract to Metallica´s music. As a person he is great, but the real motors are Hetfield and Ulrich, not even Cliff Burton. Metallica is those two guys, both the good stuff and the bad stuff.

Metallicarules | 3/31/2009, 11:24 pm EST

Jason Newsted was awesome, like Cliff Burton, but Robert Trujillo is pretty fucking good too. Too bad Jason’s not in it anymore. This makes two bands he’s left, ’cause he left Flotsam & Jetsam for Metallica. I miss Jason, but Cliff is the most missed member of Metallica. R.I.P. Cliff, and welcome, Trujillo.

this is how it is | 4/1/2009, 12:39 am EST

better bass player: Trujillo
better backup vocalist: Newsted
onstage performer: Trujillo
past: Newsted
present and future: Trujillo
Newsted’s time has come and gone, Trujillo is the f’n man!!

JoodBloodyJood | 4/1/2009, 3:24 am EST

Jason is a great personality, but was barely visible in metallica music, regardless of the legacy of Cliff and his contribution to the earlier albums, cliff mythod still influenced JH & LU into writing some really good shit that 25 years later i still enjoy like the first time i played metallica anywhere. i am not seeing much of Rob’s influence in DM, the album is so thrashy it sounds like a 21st century Kill ‘em All, and i loved it… guess taht is where rob and jason legacies intersect, jason was part of metallica growing up and evolving towards main stream rock, rob’s legacy will see metallica return to its roots…

scruff | 4/1/2009, 4:25 am EST

Rob is a great bass player and great addition to the band. I saw them last week and it was a trully brilliant show by all 4 of them.

I never saw them when Jason was in the band and as that’s when I became a fan I would love to have seen them when he was a member.

nawaf | 4/1/2009, 7:45 am EST

jason the man, no one can fill jasons shoes

Anonymous | 4/1/2009, 12:19 pm EST

Anyone who thinks, omfg, I love Newsted and I wish he was still in the band, should just go suck his balls. Seriously, he was just a fill for when Cliff died and there is no way you can tell me he is any better than Robert Trujillo. Whoever said they can’t hear his bass sound in DM is a complete retard. It’s highlighted, not anything near Cliff, but it is good. Without even trying to compare, I noticed that Jason’s bass sound in For Whom The Bell Tolls is non existent, where as Trujillo’s sound is amazing, and I can actually here the bass.

Suman(pokhara,BagBazar) | 4/1/2009, 12:56 pm EST

I loved Jason in the Band.RTis good aswell. He need to stop spinning aoud like an idiot and his hair need to be shorten.Bang Your Fuckin Head……

Cliff Burton | 4/1/2009, 3:53 pm EST

I can’t believe I was replaced by this third-rate bass player. I am rolling around in my grave.

Metallica Sucks | 4/1/2009, 4:53 pm EST

Metallica are the biggest sell outs in music history. Next to Kiss and Aerosmith. Who cares about them getting inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. They shouldn’t even be inducted because they arent even rock and roll. They are teeny boppers.

iLly | 4/1/2009, 6:48 pm EST

Robert Trujillo is one of the best metal bassists ever. Period.

Gene Simmons | 4/1/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Kiss a sellout? LOL; HAhaha, I mean, they were BORN SELLOUTS! they were never a serious band. Metallica, on the other hand, are complete and utter sellouts. But DM is good.

lol | 4/1/2009, 8:10 pm EST

Haha, yeah.
They sell out.
They sell out every fucking seat in the house.
Metallica’s a great band, influenced most of the shitty bands today.
and, they aren’t rock and roll, they’re fuckin’ metal. :)

Dude Man | 4/1/2009, 8:12 pm EST

Excuse me , but how are Metallica sellouts. There is nothing wrong with musicians showing that they can do play more than one sound and puting out a ballad and proving that there is more than one emotion to an artist. Trust me, this is coming for a fan who enjoys thier older work as much as today’s. The only people that soldout are the other fans who were not happy for their success. Yes, that’s right you sold out, not Metallica. And not even rock n roll, as far as that’s concerned I was much doubt Madonna and Britney Spears fans love Metallica.

JoodBloodyJood | 4/2/2009, 4:37 am EST

haha… imagine, with all the negative view over metallica, their following are in the millions all around the globe, if i was metallica, i would buy a huge peice of land, invite the millions and millions of my people and join the UN… sell out my ass, imagine if they had the same media exposure as paris hilton or britney freaken spears… the metallica kingdom seal would be the M-star!

Anonymous | 4/2/2009, 11:36 am EST

so nobody here has a problem with the fact that Trujillo plays his bass at his knees and wears tracksuits? That shit is cool for Slipknot and Korn, but Metallica?? Cringe inducing.

F@#@ Metallica | 4/2/2009, 11:44 am EST

He left because one day he looked around and saw a bunch of d-bags playing horrible music. It was an awakening, and he ran, far far away!

notyou | 4/2/2009, 12:05 pm EST

Metallica has a bass player?

Can’t tell by listening to the records. No bass anywhere in the mix. Just a constant inaudible rumble. Reminds me of VH….

MegachuY--Tijuana | 4/2/2009, 5:34 pm EST

Jason is the best choice for MetallicA. Cliff is dead!!..RIP!
Jason plays in the Garage days,…And justice for all; & the Black Album.
Albums like Load to DM;..are more about surviving th industry (YES!SELL OUT..SORRY!).
Rob have a great “finger picking”, but his best moments past away & remains in the “Suicidal” days.
OH!!..YEAH!! GUITAR HERO doesn’t deserves respect.
Like Jason says: “Play real instruments “…or deal with it
(This was me..jajaja!). GUITAR HERO is for the possers!.

Cool | 4/2/2009, 8:25 pm EST

Glad Jason isn’t a poser with Metallica and thier piece of shit Guitar Hero

metallicafan | 4/3/2009, 5:58 am EST

HE IS THE BEST!

6Metallicashows | 4/3/2009, 11:05 am EST

I’ve seen all 3 bassist over the years. They all have had an impact on Metallica. Cliff is the OG, and he is sorely missed. Jason was around at the peak of Metallica’s success, probably at their prime. Rob is the present and future of Metallica. They all rock. Enough said.

unforgiven-part 69 | 4/3/2009, 2:00 pm EST

If anyone does not think Metallica didn’t sell out they are smoking crack. In the days of the original Metallica it was all about hard core music. No videos, No video games None of that MTV 4pm shows. They stated they didnt want to be in the Mainstream. Then they made 1 video in black and white and it was all over. They sold out right then and there. Great video dont get me wrong, but went against everything they said they didnt want to do!! Sold out!!! but for the right reasons. They became a power house band making millions of dollars through the mainstream industry, so sell out who cares, the only ppl who care about them being sellouts are the ones who wish they were making that money for being the sellout. METALLICA rock on for being sellouts for the right reasons to advance your career with the generations to come, just please STOP with the endless UNFORGIVEN songs
Good Luck in Cleveland, RIP clif the real Bassist for this band!! Trujillo- time for some new clothes the metallica shirt everyday is played out, we know you love the band, but geez enough is enough.

Dude Man | 4/3/2009, 5:18 pm EST

So, making videos is selling out? Black Sabbath made videos, Anthrax made videos , Megadeath made videos, Pantera made videos. Want me to go on with the list of metal bands that made videos? And you say they are part of the “mainstream”. Don’t get me wrong here because there is nothing wrong about more commercial sounds. Some of my favorite bands are commercial, but Metallica don’t sound like today’s mainstream of terrible emo bands. Finally, “The Unforgiven” is a great song that shows a different side of this amazing band. In no way are Metallica sellouts.

Bill's ReWard | 4/3/2009, 8:07 pm EST

Why would he look back? So he could see a bunch of prima-donna douchebags?

L. | 4/3/2009, 9:40 pm EST

Metallica should publicly apoligize to Newsted at the ceremony for mixing the bass out of ..And Justice For All. If any Metallica record needs to be remixed and remastered, it should be that one.. not Death Magnetic.

Tom | 4/3/2009, 9:43 pm EST

Loved Suicidal Tendencies with Rob and love him in Metallica now.. I saw both bands together on the Black tour way back when…
Rip Cliff. Cheers Jason.

Mike Wallace | 4/3/2009, 9:46 pm EST

yeah… re record “justice” with Trujillio… that would be cool..
its going to be a great awards ceremony.. Metallica forever

kaptain carter | 4/4/2009, 1:43 am EST

Yeah.., back to the top, re-record ‘Justice’ to take Trujillo out of the mix?? The fact is that Newsted was the best thing for Metallica after Cliff Burton died. He wasn’t an original or the most creative member yet maybe the fact that he was a fan first is what makes him the most Metallica member in the band; everyone else just became too detached. I hope we don’t have to replace Lars and James too! We at least need an authentic James!

Phantom Lord | 4/4/2009, 4:59 am EST

How come noone ever mentions Ron McGovney; Metallica’s original bassist who appeared on their very first demo with Dave Mustaine? Any way, Newsted and Trujillo both jam and both brought their own original style to the band. Extra respect must be given to them for having to perform the songs and live in the constant shadow of perhaps the greatest rock bassist of all time. R.I.P. Cliff!!
Also, congrats on the RRHF nom Metallica it’s well-deserved; and bravo for inviting Jason to jam with you. As for all you Metallica haters: no matter what you think of the band post-Cliff, the fact that they helped create an entirely new genre and culture of music cannot be denied. They broke barriers and paved the way for other Metal bands to achieve success once thought impossible. Albums like “Lightning”,”Puppets”, and “Justice” will remain timeless classics and help influence future generations. “Metal Up Your Ass”!!

rockmachine..... | 4/4/2009, 8:44 am EST

Having to live & work with 2 of the biggest A Holes in the industry.Rob is a great addition cause of his laidback ways, and lets face it, The payday is probably a little fatter than the ozzy osbourne band checks… Newstad is deadly. Onstage in his prime, no one could touch his energy and emotion, the guy was a maniac. Hetfield & Ulrich weak dudes, for thier control freak mentality, driving away a premier bassist with metal and music in his heart, but could not let him contribute his ideas, fuckin losers.

Rick 79 | 4/4/2009, 9:24 am EST

All this talk of selling out is always done by idiots who probably still live with their mothers. It would do you all well to listen to Hooker With A Penis by Tool. Every band you have ever hear or paid to see or bought an album from has sold out to one degree or another. If they were’nt they would still be playing in a garage. If they did’nt love money and only loved music they would do it for free. So as you wear you Nikes and drink your name brand drink and put on your favorite bands shirt think about the fact that your a walking billboard so your a sell out also huh? All you know about me’s what I sold ya… Tool

Hummer | 4/4/2009, 11:41 am EST

didnt someone say that Jason wanted back in during Some Kind of Monster? someone be lyin…

Metallica didnt sell out, they bought IN

K | 4/4/2009, 11:47 am EST

As soon as a band sells a record or charges a dime for a show…..they have sold out! So what’s the point?

nah mean | 4/4/2009, 8:03 pm EST

People get older and they change and that’s the deal w/ Metallica. It happens and they seemed to change their beliefs behind their music. They were one of the (if not THE) biggest metal bands of all time, but they watered down their sound. You can’t deny that. I don’t see Slayer compromising their music the same way. They still deserve their place in the RRHF. Respect.

ruffnek | 4/4/2009, 8:12 pm EST

Can’t disagree. If Master of Puppets Metallica could see the future and heard St. Anger Metallica they would probably have joined Megadeath. When you start wearing $200 jeans and using hair product then it’s time to stop making “metal”. Go produce or judge a realilty show or something. Before you become the Rolling Stones sit down and go out with some dignity. You had your time. Done.

michael killjoy | 4/4/2009, 8:19 pm EST

I think the napster drama is when they sold out. As far as their music goes they became an alternative band with the release of load and reload. And I must say the Unforgiven sequels are arguably the worst songs ever written. I couldn’t believe they thought Unforgiven three was a good idea.

Francisco | 4/5/2009, 2:39 am EST

…Ohhh just saw them on TV, they rocked!!! with jason!!! YEAAHHH!!!

As for the people that say their best days are behind them… As much as i absolutely love them that´s probably true, but Death Magnetic is one hell of an album, it´s a great fukkkin album really…wish they recorded it years ago..

Maybe is because we miss our overdue youth? Sad but true…

j man | 4/5/2009, 4:30 am EST

Rob looks like a fucking ape. His whole style is not metallica at all. Jason on the other fuckin kicked ass. I do really wish jason was still in the band. I dont think theyre music has been nearly as good since he left. Nothing against rob he is a good bass player but the braided hair and his jerseys have got to go. That shit isnt metallica at all

Rick 79 | 4/5/2009, 9:14 am EST

What makes a band huge, rich and famous is album sales. The way you obtain huge album sales is by making music that lots of people love. There is nothing wrong with that, its what all bands hope to acheave, yes even the crappy little bad that you love that no one has ever heard of, not because the band wanted it that way, its just because they suck and nobody cares. So early on, like during Kill Em All, like myself lots of you became fans of Metallica and they were your band, but unlike me you got pissed when they got huge and now you were’nt the only cool person you knew who liked this underground innovative band.I agree ST.Anger was crap. The CD wasn’t good for anything accept maybe to be used as a beer coaster. But it was Metallica doing what they wanted. No one would make that record thinking its what america wanted to hear because it was crap. Stop hating on Metallica because they are bigger and better than the band you love. Metallica knows that if they had made Kill Em All 12 or 15 times and changed it a little bit and renamed it they would have faded into nothing just like the no name bands who have gone away and end up on where are they know shows over the years. The only band who can do that and survive is AC/DC.

Rick 79 | 4/5/2009, 9:17 am EST

My bad, where are they now. Guess I should proof read my stuff before I post it.

Mike | 4/5/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Good luck to Newsted.

Kirk | 4/6/2009, 10:18 am EST

Metallica: Class act.

Bob Rock | 4/6/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Hello??!?!?!???? Why isnt my likeness in Guitar Hero???

S.D.LEE | 4/6/2009, 9:56 pm EST

It has been quite a journey for Metallica. I’ll never forget the first time I heard Kill Them All. It truly was a great time to be a kid. I’ll truly never forget sitting in Science class and finding out as I called him the Clifftomic Bomb was killed in a freak accident and what made it worse..It happened in the ice. At that point Metallica was in the same situation as they found themselves in finding Rob. Jason was a cool dude hung with my freinds older brother. I was priveleged to see Jason when he was with DOGZ. They played at Papago Park. Talk about paying your dues. I remember the keg of beer caked with dirt from Jason hopping around playing pretty awesome. That moment I decided I wanted to play bass and have for the last 25 years. I found it shocking that he left Metallica….but you know what..Jason is hopefully happy…hopefully happy. He has made tons of money I would hope and wanted to create outside of the Metallica box. Ozzy I bet was fun! How many of you can say you jammed with Ozzy. Rob can. Good Luck to Jason and Good Luck to Rob. But most of all thanks to James, Lars and Kirk for sticking with it. Loved Death Magnetic!!!!

Alexvoz | 4/7/2009, 12:20 am EST

Shit. I am either going to post 5 times or not at all. Is there a character limit on posts?

Part 1 of my comment:

I cannot believe people are so concerned about RT’s style. The guy likes baggy clothes and braids in his hair. Deal with it. If you don’t like his stage antics, then simply listen to his nimble fingers dance all over the fretboard. He sounds great and is that not the primary concern?

Jason was a great guy, dedicated to the band, passionate, etc.. but if you tell me he was the best bass player that Metallica has ever had, you’ve got wax in your ears. I love their output with Jason, but purely talking about the bass sound – you can barely hear him! And when you do hear him, it’s um, kind of lack luster. I think Robert is musically closer to Cliff Burton (and of course no one mentions Ron. Why would they?)

One more random thing. Someone down below was complaining about Rob wearing Metallica shirts all the time? I think Jason owned 4 t-shirts from 1986-1996, all of them Metallica. I don’t think bands should wear their own t shirts, no matter how much their own bass players love them.

Alexvoz | 4/7/2009, 12:25 am EST

The comment posting technology on RollingStone.com blows. Ya’ll need to move into the 21st Century, ya heard Rolling Stone?

versedandvested | 4/7/2009, 10:05 am EST

say what you want about Metallica and “commercialism”.

It’s hard to argue with their song catalogue.

Becker | 4/10/2009, 3:44 am EST

I only got to see Metallica live once. The Capital Theater in Passaic, NJ in Nov of 1986. Apparently the 9th show ever with Jason. I’m glad that Jason was able to perform with Metallica at the RRHF. Too many times, former memembers are excluded. I just wish that Cliff could have been there instead. Personally, I like Rob’s style of playing more than Jason’s and it works better for the older material as, like Cliff he doesn’t use a pic. Jason was great for his time, but I think Rob is the better man for the current band.

Willo | 4/30/2009, 12:08 pm EST

You guys are on crack. Jason was/is the best bassist that Metallica ever had. As far as musical chops, none of them are anywhere close to being ‘great’ bassists (technically). If you think Cliff was great then, well, you are smoking the wrong weed.

Jason, however, walked-the-walk, he was a fan and appeared to really respect what he did (and the fans). Lars – you have to be kidding me, what a joke. And yes, when he started whining about Napster you knew that he sold out (sure they should make money, but how many islands do they have to have before they remember that making music is about making music and if you are a short, semi-talented drummer with an ego that is 2x your height with tens of millions of dollars in your bank account, well, you should just shut-up and play the drums).

Anyway, Rob good, but not as into it as Jason (he seems to be the most ‘background’ member). I think his wife probably told him “just shut-up, don’t make any waves, and soon _we_ will be able to buy an island…”).

Jason has more stones than anyone on this list for walking-away from metallica at their peak.

jimbo | 5/13/2009, 10:14 pm EST

cliff is THE BEST bassists i have ever seen. its a shame he passed away. cliff is way better than jason, no disrespect, and i love rob trujillo and jason should of never left but we got an awesome bassist in rob trujillo!

metfreak101 | 5/17/2009, 8:09 pm EST

Jason was the fucking man. His vocals gave Metallica a depth that has yet to be matched by Rob or Kirk and his playing was enthusiastic and intelligent, making him a perfect match to be onstage with the gods that are Metallica. Rob is good as well, but doesn’t give the band what Jason did…or even come close to Cliff.

Anonymous | 5/26/2009, 6:02 am EST

Ok why is everyone going on about who the best bassist for Metallica is? :S It mentions nothing about Cliff in the interview.

nick | 7/17/2009, 2:21 am EST

jason was great but he used a pick which shows in bass playling a lack of style which is only meant to be fast and have no technicallity rob wins

Brad | 8/9/2009, 1:01 am EST

F&*K metallica! PANfuckinTERA is where its AT.

manedog | 8/9/2009, 4:29 am EST

I remember the days of reading interviews with Metallica when they would say things like… ‘We’re never gonna release videos and pander to MTV’.. then came ‘One’ – OK, a great vid and worth putting out – but just look at the tripe they put out now… what a classic video ‘Whiskey…’ is… errr, not! For fux sake, they are a great band but the biggest sellouts since KISS…. rant over…

HardandHeavy | 8/11/2009, 7:22 pm EST

I don’t see why so m,any people are always bullshiting on Metallica after The Black Album. More importantly, denying the existance of Metallica after 1988. I say those Metallica bashers are merely fair weather fans. Ironically, people give Slayer a miserable time after Seasons In The Abyss, for using the same themes and sound. Maybe Slayer should have changed their sound and released songs like Enter Sandman and Unforgiven and Metallica should have used the same sound and themes. Then would everyone would have been happy?

I think Jason was much better than Rob… His scene appearance and backing vocals were absolutely awesome… When I look at Metallica these days I think there’s something missing there – especially when I watch and listen to “Battery” from any live concert after his leaving (you know what I’m talking about) Besides since he left they haven’t released any album which is even half as good as albums released when he was in the band… JASON PLEASE COME BACK – YOU’RE THE BASS PLAYER FOR METALLICA NOT ROB!!!

jason left so we have to all deal with the fact that hes not going back. so lets just be happy they didnt breakup

All three of their bassists rocked… Cliff died, Jason left the band.

They’re simply moving forward.

For the haters… do you think they should have just all walked away?

Newstead was way better for Met, than Ozzy’s old bitch Rob. Jason was way more creative, and musically inclined. Rob was in the right place at the right time.. thats all!

Jason was “the” bassplayer for Metallica. Robert is fine but he can’t do backup vocals and i think he’s the missing link between Man and apes. Jason was dynamite on stage I’n still fan but miss Jason in the band. It ain’t the same anymore onstage.
