Like Billy Corgan? Want to be in Smashing Pumpkins? No, these aren’t trick questions. The band — essentially just Corgan at this point — will be holding an open call for drummers on April 10th in Los Angeles. Interested parties should send background info (presumably a brief bio), photographs (presumably of themselves) and performance links via e-mail to pumpkinsdrummer@gmail.com.

The Pumpkins announced the departure of longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin in a late-afternoon press release on Friday, March 20th while much of the music press was either in Austin at South By Southwest or hitting the bars for happy hour. On the 24th, Chamberlin blogged about the split, writing, “I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don’t fully possess. I won’t pretend I’m into something I’m not. I won’t do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can’t just, ‘Cash the check’ so to speak.’ ” Chamberlin was Corgan’s longest-running musical partner, playing on all Pumpkins albums except Adore; he even performed on Zwan’s Mary Star of the Sea.

Corgan has yet to make a personal statement about the state of the Pumpkins. His last public appearance came in Washington, DC in mid-March, when he testified before a Senate committee regarding artists receiving royalties when their songs are played on the radio. According to the press release announcing Chamberlin’s ousting, Corgan will hit the studio this Spring to start work on the next Pumpkins album.

Why call it SP? It’s just Billy and a bunch of guys. He could at least bring back Iha and D’arcy. What else are they doing these days?

The last time the Pumpkins were without Jimmy, during Adore, they needed 2 drummers plus another percussionist for their live shows. According to smashingpumpkins.com, it looks like they(Billy) will be doing something similar this time around. Jimmy will be missed, but 2 drummers might just equal the awesomeness that is Jimmy Chamberlin. Maybe.

Well let’s see, James Iha just started a new band. D’arcy’s quick exit, with no return to the public eye, makes it pretty clear that she has no intention of being in any band. Neither were interested back when he re-formed the group with Jimmy, I don’t see why they would be now. I think Billy is a little crazy, but still, you wouldn’t tell Trent Reznor not to call NIN, NIN, would you? Let the guy get a new drummer, we can judge the new music once he’s released it.

I don’t mind if Billy keeps the name…. but I do think he should alter it, to just ‘Smashing Pumpkin’.

Lose the ’s’.

Dr. Patio | 3/31/2009, 11:11 am EST

Time to move on Billy…

TVM | 3/31/2009, 2:24 pm EST

However much you love James, D’Arcy and/or Jimmy, don’t fool yourselves. Smashing Pumpkins is and always has been a one man show. For better or for worse, SP IS Nine Inch Nails in that regard, and like NIN, it has worked great for years and will continue to do so.

Jimmy is great, but so are 1,682,423 other drummers in the world. Love him or hate him, there is only ONE Billy Corgan.

CCDSY | 3/31/2009, 3:39 pm EST

These is a shame..I think that Jimmy’s drum, besides de talent of Billy, was something that characterize a lot of SP songs!

JOSE LUIS | 3/31/2009, 3:56 pm EST

i think it’s ok. but i really want to hear the next pumpking album with the oriental guy..

flank | 3/31/2009, 4:05 pm EST

Where is Chamberlin’s son? Can’t he drum at all?

dudebro | 3/31/2009, 5:02 pm EST

Bring Back Zwan!!!!

Sanchez | 4/1/2009, 8:24 am EST

Played on every album except Adore? Wow – what does that tell ya, yikes.

Just like another has stated, Smashing Pumpkins is like NIN. SP is Corgan, NIN is Reznor.
Jimmy is a phenominal drummer. But the music/lyrics of SP is of and by Corgan.
D’Arcy and Iha were more like session players anyway.

Axl Rose | 4/1/2009, 9:40 am EST

I heard Steven Adler is available…

iha is in a band with one of the hanson brothers

Stan | 4/2/2009, 4:43 am EST

They also should audition for a new band name. This is ridiculous…
Any way, it will be very hard to replace, he’s really of the world’s best drummers. Listen to his solo album, it’s great too.

Thomas | 4/2/2009, 8:57 am EST

Yes, Jimmy is incredible. But there are 1000’s more incredible drummers, who are unique in their own right, out there who haven’t found their vehicle to stardome.
SP will continue, the music will continue and the drumming will continue.

I don’t know why people want Corgan to change the band name. “The Smashing Pumpkins” should be in the top ten band names of all time. It’s up there with “The Grateful Dead” and “The Waiting” As for the drummer, I was never all that impressed with SP’s drummer…I’m available, but I can’t make it to L.A. Dang it!

Axel opened this door

It used to be that the singer went solo and the band kept the name and forged on (Van Halen, Deep Purple, 38 Special, Bad Company,Journey, Genesis, Judas Priest, Motley Crue,Skidd Row)

Now the singer KEEPS the name and replaces the band….I don’t like it

Hmm, let’s see:
*Guns N Roses: Axl Rose is the only original member left after FOURTEEN lineup changes within the past 20 years. Most of the former members (Slash included) cite Rose’s erratic, dictator-like way of running the band as their reason for leaving.
*Evanescence:Amy Lee is the original one after after FOUR of the original members left/were fired all within the space of 4 years after Evanescence released their first album. Most of the former members cite “creative differences” as their reason for leaving, but one former drummer claimed he was fired by Lee via phone. He was served a gag order by the label, and couldn’t elaborate more on the matter. However, a lot of people say Amy is a controlling bitch.
*Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor is the only real member of the band. The revolving band members are strictly for touring and recording, but not to be known as actual, intended-to-be-permanent members. So let’s not place Trent in the same category as the other crazies, OK?
*Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan. He has issues. See Amy Lee and Axl Rose. Enough said.

D'arcy | 4/5/2009, 1:46 am EST

I told you all.

matt | 4/5/2009, 10:08 am EST

“Just like another has stated, Smashing Pumpkins is like NIN. SP is Corgan, NIN is Reznor.”

Bullshit. Smashing Pumpkins was once a real band, whereas NIN’s has always been Reznor’s project.

It was suspect enough when Jimmy and Corgan were the only original members of the reunited band; however, this is just absurd. Going solo didn’t work for Corgan, so now he needs to rely on the SP brand. It’s pretty unfortunate.

Don’t forget that Jimmy is widely considered to be one of the greatest drummers of all time. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill.

RM.SP | 4/10/2009, 6:06 am EST

What ever drummer they find, he aint gonna be 1/2 as good as Chamberlain. there are/were very few drummers better than Jimmy and this will be a huge blow for the Pumpkins. this band will end up being corgan and a bunch of people 1/2 his age.

robert | 4/21/2009, 5:56 pm EST

open your minds and just listen :) )

Andy Malm | 5/5/2009, 12:22 am EST

Look, There are no standards when comes to a “band”…If members connect then anything can happen, as long as there is talent and a generous giving of ones talents…entertain the audience, not beat them over the head with pretentious songs…

WARLOCK | 6/10/2009, 2:28 pm EST

А я так посмотрю, Вы как всегда немногословны ;)

Syndirella Heart | 6/28/2009, 8:47 pm EST

I would make this band better than it ever was. I would gladly pull this band to the next level and make Corgan proud once again of his band. Besides being the ONLY tgirl drummer on the planet, I am skilled in every way a drumkit needs to be played…and more.
