Bob Dylan Unveils “Together Through Life” Opener “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ “

3/30/09, 12:28 pm EST

With his new album Together Through Life due out in less than a month, Bob Dylan is giving fans a first listen with a free download of “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ ” on his official Website now. “Nothin’ ” is Together Through Life’s opener and sets the tone for an album full of tracks that Rolling Stone described in our album preview as having “a seductive border-café feel,” thanks to the contributions of Los Lobos’ accordion player, David Hidalgo. The album, which is available for pre-order now through Dylan’s Website, is out April 28th.

In an interview posted on his Website earlier in March, Dylan explained why “Nothin’ ” doesn’t have traditional guitar solos: “Soloing is not a big part of my records anyway. Nobody buys them to hear solos. What I try to do is to make sure that the instrumental sections are dynamic and are extensions of the overall feeling of the song.”

Together Through Life — stocked with Delta-blues riffs, country ballads and hard-swinging shuffles — was inspired by “Life Is Hard,” a song Dylan penned for the director Oliver Dahan’s My Own Love Song. “You would never expect the record after Modern Times to sound like this,” a source in the Dylan camp told Rolling Stone. “Bob takes all of those disparate elements you hear and puts them into a track. But you can’t put your finger on it — ‘It sounds exactly like that.’ That’s why he’s so original.”

Dylan is also rumored to be joining John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson on a co-headlining tour this summer. For much more on Together Through Life, plus previews on all of the big releases due to hit shelves in the coming months, check out Rolling Stone’s Spring Music Preview below:

New Tune! | 3/30/2009, 1:42 pm EST

Coming soon – peanuts extracted from Bob Dylans feces – only $50 a bag but they’ve been rated 5 stars by Rolling Stone for crunchiness, digestability and taste as the best peanuts ever excreted from a rock star!

Ben | 3/30/2009, 1:45 pm EST

So it’s basically Otish Rush’s “All My Love (I Miss Lovin’)” without the change in rhythm. Hmm…

mikeky | 3/30/2009, 2:01 pm EST

i love me some dylan, but the 12-bar blues tunes (and assorted blues formations) are becoming tiresome.

WhyCouldntYouPutTheBunnyBackIn | 3/30/2009, 2:32 pm EST

He’s too old.

boatman | 3/30/2009, 3:13 pm EST

I don’t blame Rolling Stone for giving all his albums 5 stars.
If Bob goes down we all go down.
We’ve got to keep him propped up even if it means taxpayer dollars.

Well... | 3/30/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Come on, his feces-covered peanuts are still better than anything any young kid is doing today…that means you, Jeff tweedy and Conor Oberst

Major Tom | 3/30/2009, 3:38 pm EST

What a great song! Can’t wait for the album.

Kevin | 3/30/2009, 3:50 pm EST

Guitar solo-free? This song has three of them.

Great tune though.

StrummerJones | 3/30/2009, 3:52 pm EST

To the people who say that he’s too old and that Rolling Stone is just eating up anything he shits out, you need to remember that Rolling Stone gave five stars to Working On A Dream and No Line On The Horizon. Look elsewhere for your ratings.

However, everyone ate up Dylan’s last three. They were the most critically acclaimed albums of their respective years

Cosmic American | 3/30/2009, 4:05 pm EST

Sounds more like Howlin’ Wolf’s “Who’s Been Talkin’” than “All My Love” to me, similar riffs though.

yayay | 3/30/2009, 4:44 pm EST

@ben
there are hundreds of songs that sound more or less like that.
word on the street is that it’s a fancy new kinda music called “blues”

cloth | 3/30/2009, 4:48 pm EST

Rolling Stone is only doing it’s duty awarding these behemoths 5-star ratings. Otherwise we might have to bail out the record companies.
I just feel bad for Bob that so much is resting on his shoulders.

Dane | 3/30/2009, 5:33 pm EST

Oh bobby…

Hoakey Smokes | 3/31/2009, 1:53 pm EST

His farts have more musical talent then both modern Hip hop and pop genres combined. And the beauty of the blues, for those of you who missed it, is not what you can do in the standard 12 bar but what you can do TO it. Typical Dylan, take it, re-shape it, re-invent it, make it yours forever.
Word to the Mothership.

punray | 3/31/2009, 2:00 pm EST

David Hildago is more than just Los Lobos’s accordian player. who the f-ck wrote this article?

Have you actually listened to his farts?
How do you know they have musical value?
Sounds to me you have completely lost perspective.

New Tune! | 4/1/2009, 1:23 pm EST

Have you heard about the new album!
“Beyond here lies (an album pretty much the same as the last four I released that drones on and on and that my brainless fans gobble up like PEZ out of a Bob Dylan dispenser)”

Ramshorn | 4/1/2009, 3:49 pm EST

Big Bob fan, but wasn’t crazy about Love/Theft liked most of Time/Mind…Modern Times was very good…always takes a few listens for a new release of his to kick in..when it does..you’re definitely in Bob country..and taking up residence for a spell

I think people who dismiss Dylan’s recent work simply haven’t been listening properly. Dylan is an artist who has built his entire career on changing his persona; it’s simply not going to sound the same as his classic ’60s or ’70s output. So when his voice went in the ’90s he naturally rebuilt his sound to fit his new voice – and this new voice was that of a Delta bluesman, full of grit and emotion and humor. His current music reflects that, and I personally think his last few albums are among the best he’s ever done. You don’t have to like it, but don’t dismiss it so quickly. And I like the new single. It has an edge to it that MODERN TIMES lacked (which is more of a stylistic difference than a bad thing), and I’m looking forward to the full album.

Wow-Tex-Mex Blues! Mr. Dylan’s male fans are always mouthing off–this is an album of love songs, so, RS why not do something different…like contact every FEMALE song writer you can think of to “review and comment” on their favorite–and explain it to the dudes who just don’t get the FACT that Mr. Dylan changed the love song forever, by aiming every line straight at a series of FEMALE characters from soft to mystical to wicked to down right dangerous. For decades I have been wondering “how does he know so much about ME…(even the dangerous ME)”. Editor dude: let the women explain Dylan FOR A CHANGE! If they are honest–you will be amazed. There is a whole other Dylan in his songs you dudes have been missing!! He understands women are complex and difficult-and he doesn’t insult our intelligence either. Hell: RS should do a book!

Rockkitten | 4/2/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Women into Dylan want to tell him they love him, strip him, and fuck his brains out.

Dylanesque | 4/4/2009, 5:57 pm EST

I thank Rolling Stone for keeping Bob Dylan right before us. There are tons of “songs” out there not only does this man look deep inside himself he understands LOVE He writes the music and performs the music and we can interpret it any way we choose. You don’t have to like Bob Dylan but I myself love Bob Dylan and every utterance he has ever chosen to do. There will never be anyone that even comes close to the accomplishments of this one man. Yes he is older and so am I look how he works, The man is virtually unstoppable. I hope the rumoured tour with Willie and John is on the up and up. I will be there for sure. Bob Dylan you are masterful in my eyes!

Anonymous | 4/5/2009, 5:39 pm EST

Love you baby. x

Daddeyo | 4/6/2009, 9:38 am EST

I have seen Dylan only 9 times but I can sure tell you his last show was the best of the bunch. His one line strikes me…”You’ll never be as big as yourself”…what a legacy…only one other musician can possibly say that and that’s McCartney…but I give Mr. Zimmerman the edge here…This last period of Dylan is my favorite. He has become so at ease with his craft…My two teenage musician sons are finally getting him too…I stood next to 4 screaming teenaged girls (hotties at that)when he played St. Andrews in Detroit…his music is non-generational…it touches most of us like no other artist before or since…Can’t wait to see him with Willie and Mellancamp…Americana personified!!!

michelle | 4/7/2009, 5:22 pm EST

his voice really sounds a lot better. i love i feel a change comin’ on. the lyrics and band are just great. i haven’t bought a real album in years, but i plan on paying for this one in late april. its worth it!

thank you, bob!

FEETPULLER | 4/18/2009, 2:38 am EST

What I have always said about Dylan: If he didn’t make any money at all ever, he would be doing what he loves to do. He has no choice. Compulsive :-)

Tammys no longer in love with | 5/19/2009, 11:10 pm EST

At last…at long last…after years of abuse by BD towards his fans I can stop loving him. This latest piece of crap from him Together Through Life is the final piercing of the heart…and this heart will not forget or forgive this time.
