Jason Newsted on Metallica’s Rock Hall Induction: “The Black Album Band Will Be Back”

3/27/09, 3:24 pm EST

Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted is excited about his trip to Cleveland, Ohio, in two weeks. And why shouldn’t he be? The band he spent 15 years slapping his bass for, the mighty Metallica, will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4th, and for the first time in nine years, “the Black Album band will be back together and mow the shit down,” as he puts it.

That’s right. Newsted has confirmed for Rolling Stone that he’s going to be onstage with the band he left back in 2001, along with guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett, and the man who replaced him, bassist Robert Trujillo. Newsted says former bassist Ron McGovney will also be on hand for the honors, as will Ray Burton, the father of the man Newsted replaced, the late Cliff Burton.

“There’s three bass players getting inducted, and James, Lars and Kirk,” he says. Former guitarist Dave Mustaine, who now fronts Megadeth, will not be inducted, however. “Its not my decision. I have nothing to do with that. It was decided by the band, and I think it was just a hard-and-fast rule… anyone who has recorded on any Metallica recordings that have been released to the public as an official release were invited to the induction. So, that’s kind of that.”

According to Newsted, it was Ulrich who made the “very recent” call, inviting him to Cleveland for the induction. “I talked to Lars, and it’s all good,” Newsted said. “I was happy to hear from him. I hadn’t talked to him for a long time, so it was nice to hear his voice.” The last time the two had spoken was a few years ago, during a System of a Down show.

“It was basically as if no time had passed, as far as the conversation went,” Newsted recalls, adding that the two started referencing long-forgotten inside jokes almost immediately. “We picked up right where we left off. It was just absolutely positive. It was like, there we were, getting ready to get a beer some place. And Lars is ready to rock. He sounded like a kid again talking about the induction, and I felt pretty much like that, too. Getting fired up to rock after that many years… it’s pretty special.”

While Newsted’s split from the band was the very definition of acrimonious, he says the past is in the past, and he’s just looking forward to the reunion. “The main thing for everybody is, Metallica has a very large family, and this is a 25-year reunion of all of the people, from many languages and many countries, from the Kill ‘Em All road crew to the latest people who’ve helped us out all across the board, through all the years, who’ve made the monster what it is,” he says. “The honor is fantastic, of course, but they’ve made it possible for us to get all of our people together in one place after this good landmark, 25 years.”

Newsted did want to make sure Trujillo was kosher with him returning to his former post, because he didn’t want to make waves. But Robert voiced no objections, and now, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is going to get a brutal metal set; he said the band will not be meeting to practice beforehand, but will instead warm up with a single sound check.

“I wanted everything to be righteous, because I feel strongly that they have a powerful touring band that’s firing on all cylinders now,” he says. “There’s not a lot of bands that get inducted into the Hall that can still fucking knock it down. We’re all still clear-eyed and clear-minded and able-bodied, and all that, so its not something that always happens. We’re getting called out pretty early, so for us to be strong and capable to still mow everybody down, as it would be expected, is a fantastic thing.”

All “Cliff versus Jason versus Rob” arguments aside, Newsted is a class act. Closer followers of Metallica than I could speak to this point more specifically, but from what I know of Newsted, he values his personal integrity and has always been generous with the fans.

Andrew | 3/27/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Dosent shock me that they don’t want mustaine there

YO DAWG ! | 3/27/2009, 4:14 pm EST

I won’t miss that event ! I’d love to see newsted again with Metallica, even if it’s just for a gig. He was part of the metallica I remember.

dude | 3/27/2009, 4:37 pm EST

its cool that cliffs dad is gonna be there. i hope they do something really special in honor of cliff. but ive heard differnt rumors bout mustaine. some say he was invited but he couldnt make it cuz he was gonna be in europe when the event takes place. now i’m hearing that he wasnt welcome which is hard to beleive. i dont know but its cool seeing the band that inspired me to pick up a guitar when i was a kid finally get the respect they deserve.

Art Ackerson | 3/27/2009, 4:38 pm EST

Newsted rocks!!! This is going to be an awesome performance. Metallica got a little played at the end with Jason and all the cover songs, but for out and out jamming, you can’t beat these guys. Metallica will always be the live monster it has always been! The new album gave them a new lease on life!!

Bring back Jason | 3/27/2009, 4:41 pm EST

They should just bring Jason back.

PeninaD | 3/27/2009, 4:50 pm EST

I think what happened is that he cannot be inducted with them, but he was invited to be with them in the VIP area along with others who had been with the band through the years (roadies, techs, etc)

Andrew ^^^ | 3/27/2009, 5:04 pm EST

You’re wrong – Mustaine was asked to participate but gratefully declined, due to his conflicting touring schedule.

Anonymous | 3/27/2009, 5:14 pm EST

i think with hetfield saying that trujillo’s contribution to death magnetic has been more than newsted contribution in all his time with the band leaves jason with zero chance to be in metallica again,
to me newsted was always more image(scary faces and metalhead-bad boy attitude) than a real contribution to metallica ( in terms of good songwriting and good riffs), maybe hetfield never let him, but thats not gonna change now,
so stick with your side projects jason, i hope you can do better than rockstar supernova…

arch stanton | 3/27/2009, 5:17 pm EST

confirmed….Mustaine was still crying in his 1475 dollar apartment that he has whined from since 1981. Hope Dave doesnnt have cable tv so he doesnt see more.

artificialred | 3/27/2009, 5:26 pm EST

They should have made Dave Mustaine at least a part of it. I’m not saying they need to play with him, because that is never going to happen again. But at least let him come up and bury this old hatchet. Mustaine brought a lot to early Metallica, and I will bet that they never would of made that piece of crap black album had Dave and Cliff still been in the band.

Kashmir | 3/27/2009, 5:44 pm EST

awesome…this is gonna rock…i’m going :D

I Agree With Bring Back Jason | 3/27/2009, 6:13 pm EST

CANT WAIT THIS IS GONNA BE SICK
I AGREE I WANT JASON BACK IN METALLICA

BS RS | 3/27/2009, 6:35 pm EST

Jason sucks, he is a cool guy, but his playing isn’t nearly to parr with the rest of the guys in the band, its nice that he can play with them again, but he needs to stay out like he said he was going to in SKOM.

Mykl | 3/27/2009, 6:48 pm EST

“I think with Hetfield saying that Trujillo’s contribution to ‘Death Magnetic’ has been more than newsted contribution in all his time with the band leaves Jason with zero chance to be in metallica again”… that is only because under the old rules James and Lars never let Jason get a chance to have much input. That sucks that they gave Robert so much (credit and faith) when they gave Jason so little. I understand James and Lars learned from their past and such but it does still suck for James to say something that ignorant without acknowledging he had a direct part in why Jason never put a lot into the albums.

millarman | 3/27/2009, 7:29 pm EST

judas priest should be in the hall. not metallica yet? priest have been ignored so many times it makes me sick. when was the last good album metallica had .it sure isnt the last three. they dont deserve it yet. the hall is a farce. you dont think so. look what they did to BLACK SABBATH. I REST MY CASE!!!!!!

Francisco | 3/27/2009, 8:00 pm EST

Why Diss Mustaine? He didn´t play on any record, but so Ron Mc Govney, so it doesn´t make any sense.

casey | 3/27/2009, 11:50 pm EST

They should boot Rob out, rob should go back to ozzy or bls, get jason back in (lars james & kirk treat him right) so that it can be the black album load & reload band I once knew! Sence rob has been in they have been playing nothing but all the old school stuff before the black album! They have enored load & reload sence rob has joined except for fuel, memory remains & Devils dance!

PooH BeaR | 3/27/2009, 11:52 pm EST

Hetfield is a dick, he just cant admit that he made a mistake by not letting jason back in the band after his emotional breakdown. The vibe is better when I see jason in the old vids and stuff. Now Metallica is like The Rolling stones without Bill Wyman. My opinion is that James was afraid on how Jason would see him after he had his sissafied collapse…

Naldo | 3/28/2009, 12:34 am EST

Jason back, just for a few tunes. Good stuff.

A few years ago, after the disappointment of St. Anger and the whole shitstorm that went on around the band 2000-2004, I stopped listening to Metallica more or less. I’d had enough. I was a huge fan, I’d listened to everything, knew the story. They were among the first bands I started learning about and digging.

Death Magnetic brought me back more or less back to the fold. The band has been revitalized.

It will be awesome to have Jason back in the fold for a few tunes, he certainly deserves it. Definition of class right there I think. Let everything be in the past. I was lucky enough to see Jasons last tour with the band back in 2000. Awesome show.

It will be again.

vertbutterfly | 3/28/2009, 2:35 am EST

Jason deserves it… He is a great guy! I still miss him !and Dave Mustaine wrote in an open letter I quote:
Friday, February 27, 2009
An open letter
Droogies!

Metallica as you know has been selected to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So, it is with much respect that I say “congratulations!”

I also had the nice surprise of hearing that they called to invite me to the pre-ceremony party the night before, and then to the actual ceremony. Unfortunately as you all know, I will be winding down our European tour with Judas Priest so I will be unable to attend.

However, I’d like to say to Lars and James, “I am so very proud of all you have accomplished. I will continue to pray for the very best for you and your families as I always have.”

Thank you for the invitation and thinking of me.

Respectfully yours,

Dave Mustaine

Hey Newsted, we’re OVER here!

???? | 3/28/2009, 9:53 am EST

Is Jason and Rob gonna play on stage at the same time, if so that would be so kickass

Brian | 3/28/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Jason Newsted deserves to be there. The defining years of Metallica were with Cliff Burton and then Jason Newsted on bass. Even if you can’t hear it on …..And Justice for All, the album is a classic and Newsted was part of that. And whoever puts Load and Reload in a post about Metallica should have their head examined. While ok I guess, Metallica’s greatest stuff is 1981-1991. And Death Magnetic isn’t half bad either.

metallicaman | 3/28/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Jason is a bad ass bassist and so is Trujillo so let it rest damn. All these arguments are from you kids who jumped on the metliwagon with Load and Re-load anyway. you do not know the true metallica. And it will be the chance of a lifetime to see them two on stage together so get over your peti selves.

stop bitchin | 3/28/2009, 5:55 pm EST

Jason was great for the band while he was there. Times have changed and now Trujillo is the bass player right for the band. Metallica wasnt enough for Jason now he can enjoy the well deserved induction and go back to Ozzy or Echobrain or whatever he is doing these days.

Mustaine is going to pray for Metallica?
Funny how many heavy-metalleers are devout believers.
Rebellion is all on the surface with the leather jackets.

Greg | 3/28/2009, 7:04 pm EST

They certainly deserve this induction, but not for anything they’ve done in the last decade or so. As for the present, Mastodon leaves better music in their shit than Metallica is producing.

Francisco | 3/28/2009, 7:49 pm EST

As much as I love Jason as a person, he was / is by far the weakest link in Metallica. People here think too much of him (musically). His input as well as his absence means nothing to Metallica. The main writers and main force, (even with Cliff) has always been Hetfield & Ulrich. Deal with it.
Sad But True XD

nik | 3/28/2009, 11:49 pm EST

awesome. metallica deserves it there so fucking awesome

Megadeth | 3/29/2009, 12:25 pm EST

Mustaine crying in his apartment? I really don’t think so, as much as it would kick ass to see him reunited with Metallica, I think he fronts a pretty successful band himself, I’ll put Rust in Peace right up there with Metallica’s albums from the 80s, its a classic

Anonymous | 3/29/2009, 4:46 pm EST

Why aren’t the Moody Blues in the R&R HOF? They’ve had about 5 lives in their career. HOF really sucks

Rich | 3/29/2009, 6:48 pm EST

Mustaine may not have played on any studio albums with Metallica, but he has writing credits on “Kill ‘Em All” and “Ride The Lightning.” His writing and participation was a large part of the band’s early success and the proper (and classy) thing to do would be to induct him.

Eduardo | 3/29/2009, 8:44 pm EST

Jason back for a show, that will be intresting, spetialy if he and Robert play together, they are diferent musitions, and it will be a historicle jam! Wat ever the past is, and the future will be.

Tex | 3/29/2009, 9:08 pm EST

Dave did more with Metallica than Jason ever did writing-wise. I think it’s a shame he won’t be there.

Louder Now | 3/29/2009, 10:12 pm EST

After putting Mustaine through the misery of appearing in their “Some Kind of Monster” documentary, Metallica at least owed him an invitation to the Rock Hall induction. His writing credits on songs from the first album also undermine their made-up cuttoff point (only band members on officially released albums). Was their psychiatrist invited?

DrZ | 3/29/2009, 11:43 pm EST

It would be classic if Mustaine were to be there with Metallica on stage and pull the same stunt Jeff Beck pulled on The Yardbirds. It would serve them right!

glenn | 3/30/2009, 4:12 am EST

i knew people would comment on ron not being on a album.he was.im not talking the no life till leather demos eiher.do your research.too many fans here that only know metallica from the black album days.

thedetoxg | 3/30/2009, 7:01 am EST

metallica playing with newsted is going to be a nice scen again aspecially since he was in the band for many years and kicked ass, but metallica byfar the biggest band of our generation

Keith | 3/30/2009, 9:13 am EST

Theirs some irony in what Drz said about Mustaine being there to pull a “stunt” like Jeff Beck did. Beck will be there for the first time since that happened! Maybe if Mustaine is not there, Beck can wear a red wig and join Metallica on stage and repeat the same speech in Mustaine’s honor! THAT would be classic.

Jungleland2 | 3/30/2009, 11:31 am EST

Metallica can do this right (unlike Van Halen, Blondie, etc)

Do one song with Rob and one with Jason, bring Cliff’s family up to say thanks and make the people who love Metallica happy.

Mustaine can’t make it anyway, he’ll be on tour in Europe

Uhh...... | 3/30/2009, 11:41 am EST

Dave Mustaine wrote a couple of riffs and cowrote a couple of demos that became real songs only after he left. Ron McGovney is not going up on stage either. Besides, Mustaine was invited to the ceremony but he declined. If Dave Mustaine was such an important part of Metallica’s success, then Megadeth dhould be inducted next year, right?

Tom | 3/30/2009, 12:13 pm EST

Jason and Rob should start with “Pulling Teeth” as a tribute to Cliff and then have the rest of the band join them for a jam.

Knucklehead | 3/30/2009, 12:35 pm EST

The RRHF not only decides what bands get inducted (Madonna? Come on, what about Kiss or Alice Cooper?) but also what band members get inducted. 2 words: Gary Cerone. They need to open the voting to the public, not a slect few insiders and critics who claim to speak for the masses.

Metallica is the best and always will be the best.I am so glad to hear jason will be plaing with the band again.I have seen metallica 17 times. They still rock.Anyone that saies their fan,but quit liking the music and then came back, aren’t fans

LookieHere | 3/30/2009, 3:24 pm EST

McGovney recorded several demos with Metallica including one from his own garage in 1982, the Power Metal Demo, No Life ‘Til Leather and the notable live demo Metal Up Your Ass. “Hit The Lights” was a song that eventually went on the Metal Massacre Vol. 1 album.

dude | 3/30/2009, 4:17 pm EST

i totally agree with tom. having rob and jason play pulling teeth would be killer!!!!! or maby the mellow mid section for orion. that would be amazing!!

reedre | 3/30/2009, 5:09 pm EST

This is a good chance for Newsted to reestablish himself as Metallica’s bassist. You can do it, Jason. Remember it’s all about the Black Album. No one can take your place.

Jeff Mustaine | 3/30/2009, 7:01 pm EST

“I have done other music after The Yardbirds/Metallica, anyway, somebody told me I should be proud to be here tonight but I’m not, cuz they kicked me out….fuck THEM!” Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!

sorry for my english

Jason needs Metallica.
Metallica doesn’t need Jason.
Trujillo kicks total ass.

ReloadfanSoWhat?! | 3/31/2009, 1:09 pm EST

Cliff vs. Jason vs. Rob? Definitely not, ’cause each of them has his virtues and all their different bass playing styles “work” with Met’s music. But what I really miss, are Jason’s fire-breathing backing vocals! So I’m looking forward to maybe -(minus)Human, Creeping Death or Blackened…

The Unnamed Feeling | 3/31/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Actually buddy you need to do your own research. Ron was NOT on any officially released album. The same as Dave was never on an album. Ron left Metallica before Dave ever did. There first album came a while after Cliff so the only release Ron would be on is old demos.

Unforgivn | 3/31/2009, 10:07 pm EST

Jason you kick ass bro you put in all those years you deserve it just as much as anyone else

Metallicarules | 4/1/2009, 12:30 am EST

I loved Jason’s playing and I wish I could go but I’m trapped in hell with my xtra bitchy mother who absolutely hates Metallica just because I love them(they’re my fave group)and hates everything I do or say. I like Robert too and Cliff but I wish I could see Jason with Metallica again. I haven’t even been to one of their concerts which really fucking sucks cock. It’s cool how Cliff’s dad is gonna be there and I hope they do somethin’ special in honor of Cliff. Rock on, Metallica!!(with or without Jason.) \m/

Metallicarules | 4/1/2009, 12:38 am EST

I dont even have cable tv to watch them on tv on April 4th. I’m listening to Welcome Home (Sanitarium) as I type this. I totally heart Metallica and theres not a song I don’t like. Congrats to Metallica and all who are lucky enough to go or at least watch it on television.

Akash | 4/2/2009, 1:24 am EST

Well apart from what ever the Line up of Metallica is at present i personally looking forward for the Black Album Team to re-unite and rock ……..I just would love to see Jason playing with Metallica …..Jason u rok man …..

Bellzmet | 4/2/2009, 2:39 am EST

Well…I really hope that Jason will return to Metallica. Not that I have anything against Trujillo I just thing that Jason fits Metallica WAY better and just love watching Jason play! It gives more metal to Metallica.

metallica was..... | 4/3/2009, 1:22 am EST

one of my favorite bands, ride…, justice…, kill’em all, doesn’t get any better. After getting back from the gulf war a bunch of us in the 82nd went to a german festival where metallica headlined. Probably 10th time I’d seen them, first time I’d been invited backstage along with about 5 other vets. Newsted was totally cool, absolute class, Lars gave us handshake, hetfield was an ass, got ignorant when another guy asked for a signature, shoulda kicked his bitchy little ass, but it woulda been too easy. Love the band, love the music, hope hetfield has finally removed himself from up his own arse.

Tomruls | 4/3/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Ive been a metallica fan for years, and it would be good to see newsted back even if trujilo is an awesome bassist, take that from grade twelve bassist, trujilo should go back to ozzy and newsted should come back! theres plenty in common with him and the band, for starters there all metalheads like me and play not for the money but so people will buy there albums and say ‘awesome! metallica rule’

Tomruls | 4/3/2009, 12:15 pm EST

The black album band are coming back! excellent!

Metalhead! | 4/3/2009, 12:19 pm EST

Jason should back off he had his chance to rock the worlds socks of with death magnetic, but he chose to quit 8 years ago and said metallica were struggling to find anything new for st anger, well hes wrong, ur all wrong! st anger was good! it wasnt metallica but still good! face factsif u disagree ur all emos and may as well listen to paramore (who are TERRIBLE!)

Jim | 4/4/2009, 8:54 pm EST

Ron was gone before Dave, so how the hell does that make sense? If Dave chose not to go or had a schedule conflict thats one thing. But if they did not invite him at all, thats wrong!

azian shredder | 4/5/2009, 2:07 am EST

Im so stoked to see metallica achieved one of the greatest honor.i was there in 1986 seeing them for the first time with cliff at the aragon ball room in chicago, amazing concert! to me cliff was an amazing bass player! no doubt.and will always be! as for jason, i saw metallica played at the monster of rock tour 1n 1988. he’s a good bass player and will always be remembered for the contributions on the black album.trujillo on the other hand is just as good. he’s got vibe and a strong stage presence and it’s unique.im just glad to see metallica reach that point and being a part of their music through out the years.

Loker | 4/6/2009, 2:13 am EST

Mustaine had twice the songwriting credits Newsted did… and he was only in the band 2 years versus Newsted’s 15 years.

Newsted is a good guy, but seems wrong for him to be inducted and not Mustaine.

Jason Newsted is (or was) a better LIVE performer then R.I.P. Burton and that stupid Rob Turtollio. His connection with Lars,Kirk was better then with James.
